[Q] Flashback Honeycomb vs ICS ?? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello,
i've seen that ics for g-tablet came out and i am thinking to try it.
but i already ahave installed Flashback Honeycomb witch looks the same like ICS.
Any ideas if there are any differences?

Honeycomb:
- No hardware acceleration
- No HD videos
- No Camera
- Flash works in some apps, but not all.
- Been around for a while and has a good dev team.
ICS:
- New kernel built from the ground up.
- Hardware acceleration works.
- HD video works.
- Flash works.
- Camera and mic not working (yet).
- HDMI output not working (yet).
- Still a work in progress with a good dev team.

A impressed as I was by the Honeycomb ROMs, I'm just too pleased with the DRH ROM.

[Q] Cyanogenmod Hardware Acceleration

I have looked all over but can't seem to find a specific answer to this question. Does the latest build of CM have hardware acceleration? I know full hardware acceleration is not possible because Nvidia is withholding drivers from us. I have read that the CM team put together "partial hardware acceleration." What exactly does this mean? Thanks for the answers.
As far as I know, no. In fact, its one of the reasons I'm considering a throwback to Froyo, as it is the only place to find 100% acceleration.

is there a CM6 ROM with full acceleration or you mean stock tnt?

From what I gather, from reading other posts, the CM team was able to "accelerate the hardware" without "hardware acceleration" In other words, they were able to overclock to the point where the system would accelerate the video hardware. Think of it in terms of Windows, you can allocate more of the system memory to "push" certain aspects, be it video, cpu, etc. The problem with this is that to gain the "hardware acceleration" they needed to lose performance somewhere else.

He means any froyo rom. CM is a gingerbread based rom. Calkulin/Clemsyn, Brilliant Corners/Vegan 5.1.1, TNT Lite/Mountain Laurel, Gadam/Century eyes...take your pick, there are lots of Froyo roms out there. The Froyo roms are the only ones that will have 100% video hardware acceleration, because it is the only OS that NVidea provides drivers for.
i use beastly's rom, its non tnt, but is closest to stock that i have seen. not cm6.

CM just means Cyanogen Mod, CM6.x is Froyo, CM7.x is Gingerbread.
I was asking if there is a CM6.x ROM with working hw acceleration and basically asking if the limitation was the OS version, or the ROM, meaning you had to use a TnT variant which had built in drivers.
Since you list Vegan as one of the ones that has it (which is not TnT) then I have to assume a CM6.x ROM would also have working hw acceleration, is this correct?
edit: The reason I want CM so bad is because it is the only ROM where netflix works, so I could not only have hw acceleration but also netflix streaming in the same ROM.

Many people (myself included) have been complaining about this very problem for weeks (if not longer). Netflix only works 100% with CM7.03, so far. Which is Gingerbread. Hardware acceleration has only been fully enabled on Froyo roms.
You can get netflix "half working" with other roms using various patches, which basically will enable it to work, but there will be video artifact problems (big green line through video, colors shifted position ie. red and greens don't line up, etc). Vegan Rom Gingerbread edition can be hacked to work with it as well, however after you basically replace a bunch of libraries with the ones used on Cm7.03, which all just goes back to the following: Netflix really only works on CM7.03.
I'm currently using that rom exclusively because of netflix support, however the jittery performance I'm experiencing elsewhere (like, even opening the app drawer) is driving me crazy. I know the Tegra 2 shouldn't stutter like that.
Having real, bonafide Gingerbread on this device would be a g0dsend, as far as I'm concerned- not only would netflix, etc, work perfectly fine with full hardware acceleration, but also the new Skype video chat.

I've been having problems with netflix on CM7.1, can you point me to the exact ROM you're using?
actually, is there even a CM6.x ROM for the gTab? If not, why not?

On 7.1, I think you need to edit your build prop to make the app think you're an htc device or something.
On 7.0.3, it just worked out of the box.
apologies, I hadn't realized that there was a froyo version of CM...I've only ever known the GB one for the G-Tablet. I've never used it, however, because frankly (and my opinion is known on this) Netflix itself, is not worth having a specific rom, JUST to run it.
WHat REALLY needs to be done is people putting pressure on Netflix to develop a Froyo version of their app. When the app first came out, I read that they were simply testing the waters with the version(s) that were released, and that future development would be based on those reactions. Perhaps there is a way to contact NEtflix, explain your situation, and try to convince them to develop an app tat does work with the tegra 2 hardware and froyo OS.
Rather than modifying your firmware to work with the app, has anyone attempted to modify the app to work with the firmware? I know, personally, I've had problems running most popcap game releases. I'm not going to start messing with my firmware ot play Chuzzle, though...I'll just wait until Popcap releases versions/updates that work better. (oh, and ofr me, the entertainment value of Chuzzle and Netflix are basically the same, lol)
Thanks for the reply's. Now all we need is viewsonic to push nvidia to release the 2.3+drivers...

[Q] 5.1 HDMI audio - Rom that works?

Anyone know if there is a ROM out there for our lovely tablet where HDMI audio for 5.1 or even multichannel works at all?
I've been using stock since ICS came about. It sucks as they have not resolved this matter. It worked fine with Honeycomb.
Anyway, I don't feel like flashing a bunch of ROM's at this point unless it appears promising. Input very much welcome and appreciated.
Thanks all.

Flyer ICS / Jellybean with FF Camera

Hi,
XBMC is coming out for Android and it looks like it's requiring ICS or higher for proper support. This is driving me to upgrade my Flyer from HC. At the same time, I want to retain front facing camera support as I use my Flyer for Skype & SIP video calling.
The Dexter Jellybean ROM looks really good but it appears that there is no camera support (that's not knocking the work he's done - I appreciate there is a technical issue here)?
Does anyone know if Camera support is coming for this ROM? If not - can anyone recommend an ICS ROM.
Thanks

You're right - and it works on my HC Flyer as well. I've heard that development is going to be focussed on ICS and above only though - so I guess there 'may' be issues as the application develops. I currently have problems with my HD Homerun stream dropping out and was wondering if a newer Android build was a better foundation stone.
I'm starting to see one or two other apps that are not supported on HC as well. It would just be cool if I could upgrade without losing the front facing camera but I appreciate it's not everyones priority.
Xbmc for android does not support 1080 hd as it does not have hw acceleration enabled. There are sides builds out there that use external players like mx that can provide hw acceleration

[Q] Why is MHL interface so complicated?

I mean, I just cant get how its possible that this phone's stock ROM and kernel have a decent MHL support, and a super customized ROM, like Cm, AOSP, AOKP (wich all of them include awesome tweaking capabilities....) doesn't have it?
I mean, most of the stock parameters appear on files that are editable on Notepad. So, is there any one referred to MHL setup? And so, why don´t you just "paste" it into the root of a custom non-stock ROM to get that feature available?
Today I got an "advance" in my hopeless quest on getting a decent MHL look on my phone (for those who read my older threads...). I recorded my phone screen using Screencast app on a Dead Trigger playing session (wich looks horrible on my HDTV through MHL...). I was expecting that the recording has a decent quality, but due to the S2 hardware capability, I could get an awesome, sharp and smooth looking recording of my game.
The surprise came, when I plugged my computer on the TV. The default output resolution is 1080p, and in the TV, it looks "too" sharp, with a little colour and quality loss. But in windows 7 I can change it, so I did it to 760 (or something like 764) and voilá, suddenly the screen was showing my desktop flawlessly (not losses of any kind), so I decided to watch the recording of the game in my pc through Skydrive... and the results shocked me. The quality was perfect. Super smooth, fast, awesome looking 3d graphics.
Now, thats a progress. A video in 1080p output resolution looks bad through DNLA, and HDMI out (on pc); the same on 764 looked perfect (and both were faaaar too better than the same video on MHL...)
So, it seems that lowering the MHL output to 764 would be a kick up on quality. Will be possible?? Only masters can talk...
Thanks for your time and hope you can bring your light on my research.

Roms like aokp and cm10 can't use mhl because of samsungs proprietary crap, so you need to use a stock based rom if you want mhl.

No, a lack of documentation on how to implement it is what I believe is the reason, I'm not a dev though.

You are right. It is due to the parts being closed source and not part of the AOSP source code. Without this there is nothing the devs can do to make it work.
And exploring the phone's files? Maybe a trial or error test to find the MHL related parameter?

As this is very dependent on the kernel even if you could find the files without the proper kernel source code there is nothing they can do. Until it becomes part of the AOSP code there is little to no hope of it working properly
Now THIS is a progress:
http://mobility.forumsee.com/a/m/s/p12-9400-0110676--aokp-and-hdmi.html
It looks like a solution, just editing the build.prop
some ROM not supported HML as NFC
Actually, I added that line and now my phone is MHL compatible, although its ROM originally wasn't.
But only to play music and videos, nothing more shows on screen.

Best ROM for running XBMC only?

Hello!
I've stop using my Atrix since about 3 months ago, so I'm no longer in the game.
Any suggestions to what ROM should be used if one wanted to use XBMC only?
The phone will be constantly plugged in and will always have power. It would be great if the ROM supported video mirroring with hd playback and good decoding.
Any suggestions?
I've used it on both CM7 and CM10. Personally, I didn't notice a difference. I did not try playing anything as I've no media on my phone, but was able to load navi-x and stream stuff fine. It was slow, but I think that was due to it being in beta.
I'm not sure, but I don't remember seeing "Audio over HDMI" option in CM7... It's nice if you have a home theater and want sound coming from speaker system and not just the TV.
Edit: As a side note, it was a pain to work with the interface on such a small screen. Have you considered something like raspberry pi and selling/donating the Atrix?
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
well, I have considered selling it, but the digitizer has a dead stripe, so the phone doesn't really have any value. The raspberry pi is the next logical step if this doesn't work out!
When I retire my Atrix, I will most likely turn it into a pseudo laptop since I bought a lapdock. They're pretty cheap, have you considered that alternative?
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
I have a lapdock from the states, but I find it basically useless, since I haven't gotten swedish keyboard layout to work on it.

I have exactly the same scenario. I have an Atrix , unrooted, but the screen no longer works and its basically redundant. I have the smart dock and ideally would like too use it as a dedicated media player with xBMC and a remote, leaving it connected to my TV at all times.
Would appreciate it if you could share any success you have in setting this up.
Thanks!
any progress?
I'm thinking about doing the same thing with my atrix.
Have you had any success using yours as an xbmc machine or did you scrap it for a pi?
I would also like to make my atrix into a dedicated XBMC box. I have a HD dock and would like to use it with the remote. I attempted to install the newly released xbmc for android on a gingerbread rom (Neutrino). I got a message that xbmc is not compatible with my device. I assume that it can work with an ics or jb rom. It works on my galaxy nexus. Any suggestions on which one would have the best support for hdmi output and hd dock?
I have CM10 Epinter JB and xbmc works on my phone. I have to open my player first and then xbmc app.
