Ok so when I updated my tablet from 3.2.1 to 4.0.3 my touchscreen is no longer as accurate, ie when I tap somewhere its not always in the right place it might be like a cm out
I have tried calibrating touchscreen both ways but nada, I didn't have these problems on 3.2.1

same thing in my device (250gb 1.2ghz)
I am now back in 3.2.80, the only problem is that I return to only 512 MB of RAM instead of 1 GB.
Difficult to choose between a screen sensitivity issue and a RAM divided by 2.
I hope a soon update of ICS.
Hey guys I had the same issue with my 80 G9 classic and here is what I did to fix it I cleaned my screen completely and then I did the power and volume down button to get where I could force screen calibration OH MAKE SUPER SURE THAT YOUR TABLET IS ON A COMPLETELY FLAT SURFACE OR IT WANT WORK AND ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS REBOOT IT THEN GO INTO SETTINGS AND DO A SCREEN CALIBRATION AND A ACCELEROMETER CALIBRATION AS WELL MAKE SURE IT IS ON A FLAT SURFACE GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU GUYS

Well, in fact, it did. ICS kernel is mandatory to get the full 1G with new Archos G9 ICS models. Honeycomb kernel will only enable 512M on these.
Yes , thx letama, of course it did .

Hi, I have similar problem, sometimes the screen stop working, it's not a freeze of the tablet cause the buttons works (volume up/down ON/OFF) but not the screen, sometimes even in the middle of using (i.e. writing a post in a forum).
Any idea? Obviously I have tried every touchscreen callibration I have founded...

He means he has a 512 device and he thought that it increased the ram to 1gig. Software cannot do that. Anyway, I don't think the 1gb models can downgrade can they?

I'm not going to reset my whole tab because a firmware update isn't 100%, it was 100% fine on honeycomb, no issues what so ever, and the fact others have it means its not my tab, and yes I have recalibrated loads on perfectly flat surfaces, going to email archos soon
Sent from my ice cream powered Nexus S
What's to say he only had a 512 device?
I had a 1gb device, it shipped with honeycomb and only 512 was available due to the kernel limitation.
After upgrading to ICS the full 1gb became available thanks to the new kernel.
When I returned to honeycomb the RAM dropped back to 512.
I've got this issue as well.
To test it, I installed some keyboard software that shows dots on the screen 'where you touch' and I did some testing with a capacitive stylus and was shocked at whet it reports for where I am touching the screen. To be honest, I never really used the tablet with Android 3.x as I upgraded right after buying it.
I will try the thing of booting into recovery and doing the calibration there. Might also consider going back to Android 3.x to see how the tablet performs.
-UPDATE- Ok I did the reset and calibrate thing and it did not seem to make a difference. I then installed a program called Touch Test from Android Market and did some testing. It SEEMS that SOME of the inaccuracy is being caused by me using a Capacitive Stylus (Griffin one). If the use my finger (which is way fatter than the stylus), I seem to get more accurate results. I've ordered a different stylus and will see how that works.

I just received my 3rd tablet in the mail today under warranty. The first one became unresponsive to the touch screen and since it was in the Texas morning sun I thought it was my fault and bought another. The 2nd one did the same thing 4 months later even though I had taken extreme care with it, I sent this one back to the factory. I had rooted both tablets and was running versions of ICS from this site. Neither was overclocked although I do have the software to do that. I'm thinking I should stay with stock OS for a while and see if the 3rd time is the charm.
Anyone else have their tablet just mysteriously stop responding for no apparent reason? Other than the screen, everything else worked including mail and internet; I just could not unlock it to read anything.

Hi There
My touch screen stop working months ago!! I'm pretty sure it's a loose connection, If I build a fresh android from source and squeeze the top of the tab It sometimes comes back to life, I should have really sent it back but I've got a heavily modified version of adb that allows me to easily send input to it and I just plug a keyboard and mouse into a usb hub. I had another one that had "ghost touches".
I found the screen doesn't seem to like temperature changes and would get very cold to the touch If had it in my bag when travelling and really the build quality is terrible but It doesn't move off my desk as it is used only for development and I'm too lazy to send it back. meh!
With regard roms. if you were using stock rooted then the only difference between them and the stock is su, and extra busybox, everything else is as archos intended there shouldn't be anything detrimental in there. If you don't need root for anything then you might as well use stock.
--Thanks for the feedback. If someone gets Jellybean 4.1 operating for this tablet, I will root it again.
I'm on my second. Three first one had a problem worth the screen where it became greyscale soon after I started playing a youtube video. The first time it happened, I was somehow able to get it working again. The second time, I tried reloading the OS (honeycomb at the time) and resetting to factory settings and was unsuccessful.
I sent it back to QVC and got a replacement under warranty. I haven't had any problems with this one. I dropped it when getting into my car. The back came loose, but it easily snapped back into place with nothing but a few scratches on the side where it hit.

I've got several Archos tablets, and overall... and oddly... I've had very few problems with any of them other that some bad firmware upgrades or a few bad apps (including some of Google's own stuff) that eventually got fixed. I guess I've been just lucky somehow with all of my G9's being older ones with only 512M RAM (which is a bit sad because I know 1G RAM would increase performance).
The MAJOR problem I've had all started when Archos released the newer 4.0.2x firmware releases. Had to find out how to install rooted stock 4.0.7 to get a usable device again.
I will agree though, that if Archos wants to being totally idiotic with their firmware and REFUSES to provide a clean way back to a previous firmware (that actually works)... well, I too will NEVER be buying any new Archos device. Only way I would buy another Archos is *IF* it was a G9 model and I was absolutely certain that it did not come shipped with firmware higher than 4.0.7. Otherwise, forget Archos completely!

The really sad part is that if you have ever installed ANY of the 4.0.2x official firmware is that even when trying to go back to a 'rooted' 4.0.7 there are a bunch of leftovers that just don't clear out. I've done some seriously drastic things like AFTER installing rooted stock 4.0.7 of going back with ADB and deleting several syestem/app files and the dalvick-cache... and then doing some of that a second time again. Even then though there still does seem to be some odd things left that ARE NOT part of the official Archos 4.0.7 firmware.
If you are interested send me a PM, otherwise it's really too hard to explain what I'm talking about (and might not even make sense in any reply I send you).
Anyway, as far as "I" am concerned, Archos just tried to screw up as many of the G9 tablets they could with the 4.0.2x firmware simply to try to FORCE people to buy their newer G10 tablets (which DO NOT WORK RIGHT either). Kind of the same STUPID attitude several other companies had before.... "Oh, that don't work, buy this one then".... Only real difference is THAT IDIOTIC APPROACH to marketing failed for the other companies... yet, Archos seems to 'think' they can still keep doing it.
In short, SIMPLY DO *NOT* BUY ANYTHING FROM ARCHOS! Some people wonder why most of the world hates the French, but Archos keeps giving more reasons to NOT TRUST a company based in France. The Archos G9 tablets COULD have become a world leader, but for whatever reason Archos decided they would rather kill of as many of a 'good thing' as they could just to push other even worse devices on the market... something to do with EVERYONE (mostly morons) that absolutely wanted Jelly Bean (and I'm not going to buy any new Android device with that worthless crap). So I'm not only done with Archso, but also any newer Android device... never wanted, still don't want, and never will want the crap Google is trying to turn the Android OS into.
After all, *IF* I wanted a device with a dozen apps that are constantly sending info back... well, I might just as well go with a Windows 8 device (since I know my Windows computers are already sending all kinds of feedback to Microsoft as it is, Google is trying to go BEYOND what Microsoft has already been doing for years.).
In other words... all *I* want is a device that actually works, NOT ONE THAT SPENDS ALL OF ITS TIME REPORTING EVERYTHING I DO BACK TO SOMEBODY ELSE. And don't give me any of the bogus 'anonymous' nonsense because EVERY device has a certain device number, and EVERY internet connection has an IP address. As soon as you register a device or set up an e-mail address THEY KNOW. And, Google is going FAR BEYOND what anyone should ever allow them to know about (your location, what websites you view, what your interests are, etc.).
Fingers crossed but I haven't had _any_ HW quality issues with my G9 80 8GB 1GB. I've tried most of the ROMs available and have noticed that every now and then it makes things a lot easier if I just completely format the device and re-install stock using a .aos file.

Mine is crap. Battery blew up like a capri sun pouch just after the warranty expired, archos wants $77 to fix it. I had planned on keeping it as a spare, but have decided if it dies on me a DNR order is in effect.
They sent me a new device
I leave here the last reclaim on the archos support
Hello, I´ve received a new device to replace the first one that I Had, all the info in RET-XXXXXXXXXXX, but the new device came with several problems:
Ram memory 465 mb !!!!???
Processor- ARMv7 Processor rev 3 (v7l)!!??? 1.2 MHz!!!!!
And a build/Fabric defect on de screen, that when you shake the device a water bubble seems to appear and ruins the image that is showing.
I do have photos of proof of all the defects, including a video with the water bubble showing when shaking.
I also sense that it is working a lot slower then the first one I had, for that went to check the real system info....and bad news came along.
Request a immediate re-change of the product, for one that has the specific system info that I paid for. 1 GB Ram, 1.5 dual core processor, Mali 400 GPU , and a screen without any defect!
Tank you
Regards
PS: I can send you the photos and videos of the problems encountered, just send me a email.
Call Tech Support immediately and tell them what you are seeing. They will run you through several tests and then send you a new unit.

I've flashed pretty much every ROM that has been released, and I really don't believe it is caused from a certain ROM. I have found in messing with several NTs and NCs that the screen will randomly have dead areas. A few times I have seen it get worse over time. It seems to happen more on NCs and is a known problem with them. Maybe revert to stock ROM and see if it still happens. If so, try to get B&N to replace it.

if stock: there is maybe moisture or dust, take apart as much as possible and hoover round the edges,If the touch screen is still not working, the tab is broken as the majority if touch screen phones and tabs cannot be calibrated
The tablet is still under warranty, so I don't want to dissemble. It had rooted stock OS on it, ICS. I flashed the stock rom back, and still have the issue. Did a Factory reset, and still have the issue. I am in the process of draining the battery to see if that helps. But I was hoping someone may have had this happen before, and can shed some light on my problem.

Try using the touchscreen tune app (requires root).
This will allow you to modify screen sensitivity and test.
If you have the warranty..backup your data and claim a new one.

I don,'t think this app will work as this looks like a hardware issue after flashing another ROM, maybe you can check the all forum-searcher and check if anyone else has this issue too.
I'd suggest to send it back and claim a new tablet as well!
I just bought my Z today and am having a few issues with it. First, the automatic brightness doesn't work. That is if it is turned on/off from the menu bar it does not work at all. If it is changed within settings the brightness does change to a certain level and that's all it does. Second, the tablet is extremely slow installing some applications. I have owned many different android devices and never experienced the absolute slowness this tablet has when installing some apps. Not all apps install slow, but I had one take over a minute when it should have taken about 5 seconds. And finally when using the browser, the touchscreen becomes very unresponsive when downloading and installing applications. I try to scroll by swiping the screen and sometimes the tablet just completely misses seeing that input.
Edit - I tested the auto brightness some more and it does work, it's just not as sensitive as some other devices I am used to.
Edit2 - I think the slow install could be a bug with the custom skin Sony uses on top of the o/s. It's sometimes getting 'stuck' displaying the install message.
Rob
If you've just bought it today and you haven't too much stuff on it I'd try a factory reset and try again. I have had three different models of Asus tabs (all rubbish), still have my original galaxy I/O tab (great for its age) and I can honestly say this is the most fluid and rapid tab I have seen.... That includes installing apps which as soon as I started using it caused me to remark how quickly it downloaded and installed from the play store.
Auto brightness is also sensitive and rapid on my unit, to the point it annoyed me at the beginning cos i thought it was too sensitive...
If that doesn't work maybe your unit is faulty

I returned the 16gb model and bought a 32gb instead. I think the auto bright is just less abrupt than I am used to, but it does work. The only problem I am having on the 32gb which I did not have (or notice) on the 16gb are the 'phantom touches'. Twice today the tablet went into the settings all by itself. Hi Rob, there I would recommend latest software for the screen sensitivity and if that doesn't cure the problem I'm sorry to say that it could be a faulty digitizer, so back to shop again
I just bought a SGP311 (US Wifi 32G). When researching what tablet to buy, I did see some reference to phantom screen touches when flexing the screen, but I think the video said it was cleared up by firmware updates.
Mine is running .370, which I understand to be the newest available for the SGP311 (25 Aug 2013).
I find the phantom touches so sensitive and terrible that I can't believe there is not more stink about this on the internet. For example, if I'm holding the tablet with two hands and reach away with one hand, the resulting pressure from holding the tablet with the other hand causes touches all over the screen, wreaking havoc on whatever I'm doing. It even happens if I push "too hard" e.g. when playing a game excitedly.
Do I have a particularly bad unit for this? Is there a way to fix or mitigate this?
As it is, I don't think I can keep it - it's just too frustrating to use. If I hold it lightly and with two hands it's fine, but anything else - there's a high probability of touches all over the screen, especially in the Back button area
Mine doesn't do it. Or I'm not holding it "incorrectly"
Can you link to/upload a video showing this behaviour? You may want to turn on developer options->show touches to get an idea of what touches the device sees.
I have the same problem as the original poster...
Bought mine today and was messing around with it. Then I noticed the tablet 'doing stuff on its own'. After a quick test I realised I could reproduce the error by holding it in landscape and twisting it slightly. This resulted in either the back button being activated (lower left corner activated / pushed) or the settings notification area popping up (lower right corner activated).
So I guess they should have used a stiffer material as the back cover. But then again it seems almost inconceivable that the testers wouldn't have encountered this issue, if it was universal... so I'm guessing that our units are faulty - sonofabitch!
At the same time its my very unqualified guess that it isn't something which can be fixed by new firmware.
Edit: Just thought of something ... perhaps thats why the UI of the new firmware has changed? No more 'buttons' in the lower corners (as far as Im aware).

I had these same issues with mine when i got it but the update did actually fix mine so its possible that, if you are on the 370 update, that yours is extra sensitive. I have done quite a few flex tests to try to make it happen again and just can't get it to repeat after the update.
I would contact either the place you bought it from if it is within the return/exchange policy or Sony and exchange it.

Im using 10.1.C.0.370 - tablet came with that installed.
For once I actually bought electronics in a physical store (5mins walk away) so I'll go there and get them to replace it - and also test their demo model.
The demo model had the same issues. It also seems the issue is quite widespread judging by the Xperia tablet Z support forum.
The same happens un my LTE 16Gb .244 black versión...
It happens ramdomly, above allí while attached to Power stock charger, but not always...
If Sony doesn't want us to unlock bootloaders and install other ROMs tan stock, why they release such a crappy firmware?
It also happens in my c6603 sometimes un the same conditions as my Tablet, so i think is firmware related

So that's what's happening
I am having the exact same issue, in fact I didn't realize it was the flexing that was causing the issue until I read this thread. Now I can reproduce it consistently. I am so bummed, I LOVE this tablet, Sony has a lot of great stuff they put into this tablet and the form factor is amazing. I am pretty disappointed though because this makes it pretty hard to use. I checked and I am running the latest firmware. For what they charge for this thing you would think it would be a better piece of hardware. Back to Best Buy I go I supposed.

Mine is doing it right now! And I'm not even holding it, it's Sat in its dock. Mostly on the right hand side of the screen and bottom right corner (in landscape mode)..kk
That capital S of sat, and the ..kk above was done by these ghost touches.

Oh, by the way, mine is on the UK generic feature 244 which I flashed with flashtool, I would go back to the original t-mobile 're, but the ftf I made before I flashed th 244 doesn't work. I would be most grateful if anyone here has a tab with the original t-mobile fw, and could make an ftf of it!

Which version of the fw are you guys using?

Spanish unbranded FW... Seems that the problem concentrates on navigation bar, but not only... I have the visible touches enabled on developer section of settings, and can see the ghosts...
Seems that i have to unlock my bootloader and flash CM10.1 or 10.2, and see if they exists as well...
BTW: Sometimes happens on lockscreen

Has anyone tried the 4.2.2 ota for the sgp311? (10.31.C.0.136)

Its really noticeable on 4.1.2 and 4.2.2?
It seems to be main reason to not buy this. ;/
My brand new Tablet Z running 4.2.2 is acting out aswell. When in portrait mode, it seems obsessed with ghost tapping home or return...
Edit: Turned screen "logging" on. Dammit, the screen goes haywire at just the tiniest bit of flexing - even when NOT flexing... Sigh.
I've gone back to the correct fw for mine and it's settled down a bit, it still does it now and then, but nowhere near as much as it used to.

I got my XTZ and it works just great! No ghost /phantom touches at all using stock 4.1.2 even when i move harder the tablet. I think everyone who experienced this should replace tablet with new.
Confirmed.

I don't think you're supposed to flex your tablet during use... :good:

True
Actually got my Tablet Z replaced at the Sony dealer, no questions asked. (Kudos for service!) For some reason the new tablet seems to be doing much better than the "old" one.
I got 5 of these in for our staff - 2 of them have the same issue.
Phantom button pressing happens when not even touching them! Going to try and swap these over..
Running 4.2.2 on black LTE version in Australia.
