ANDROID ROM TEST v1.0 Evo 3D
**************************************
The purpose of this is to create a cut and dry template to develope, test, and troubleshoot ROMs. This provides the users and developers the ability to test key functions of their phone to verify functionality and stability of functions (small and large) based on an organized series of tests. When I have some time, I will also go through it and add notes to help troubleshoot issues (based on my own experience and other's) so the user can (hopefully) solve a problem on their own and learn along the way. I'll also do the best I can do discuss why a given problem occurs (this is also where the rest of you can provide very useful information as well).
**NOTE********************************
There are more little odd-end tests that I run on the ROMs I install on my phone. But this is a basic breakdown. When a ROM passes all of these tests, I conclude to myself that it is extremely stable and I can rely completely on it to work 100% of the time. I will update this more tomorrow. It's late and I have to work in 4 hours lol. Feel free to distribute this or use it, modify it, add to it, however you feel. Dev's are more than welcome to use this and add to it. As I add more, and all of you add more, I want this to become a very in depth, micro-analysis/test
template for our ROMs. Eventually, and as we develope this more, we can use it as a very accurate check-list to determine complete and total stability of a ROM. I tried to organize it as best I could based on what functions should be tested and in what order (first to last) based on priority and logic. Please give your input.
**********************************************************************************************************
I have attached a .txt file to this post so you can download this write-up, change it, modify it to your liking, add things to it that you think are better... whatever you do with it, if you have something you have added that could benefit everybody else all I ask is to please share the useful information
Let's begin...
ANTENNAS AND PERMISSIONS (ROOT)
-verify 3G and 4G antennas are functional and transmitting data properly. Browse internet on both 3G and 4G. Sync your accounts, verify contacts, access market, and download an application on both 3G and 4G settings.Download app that requires root access. Download cache cleaner NG, and My backup root (if not included in your rom). You will need both of these later to test other functions.
*****note, sometimes general issues occur with apps, and accounts, and you are not able to sync them for unknown reasons. Double check passwords, and if that does not work, boot to recovery and do a factory reset or flash a .zip to format your data. This has worked for me several times when encountering these types of errors. This is sometimes applicable to applications in general but be cautious of what apps/programs you decide to wipe data from.
-verify root access. Open cache cleaner and my backup root. You should be prompted to allow super user permissions. Afterwards, open up super-user application and verify events are being logged, and that apps are indeed being saved as being "allowed" permissions.
*****note that sometimes problems can occur with your system permissions and how your system is mounted. If you are being denied access to root, try powering down the phone, booting to recovery and navigating to and selecting "FIX PERMISSIONS" then boot back up. This usually works for me and most others.
-verify phone can make calls, receive calls, and call voicemail with no issues. To do a basic check of system stability, turn screen off and on manually by hitting the power button while in a phone call.
-Browse around settings, apps, and perform basica multi-tasking functions to ensure phone stability during a call.
-Verify both callers can hear each other.
-Verify volume rocker adjusts in-call volume appropriately.
-Verify speaker phone is operating properly.
-Verify proximity sensors are working in phone call (screen shuts off with an object in front of the sensor [located at the top of the phone near ear speaker])
-Verify GPS and network location antennas are working by enabling them and opening google maps. Verify accurate location and compass direction.
-Verify wifi is working and stable by connecting to a home-based internet connection and browsing the web.
-Verify bluetooth is fucntional and stable by connecting to a bluetooth device.
-Verify "update profile" is functional under settings>system updates **do not update anything else***
-Verify wifi hot spot is functional
SMS, MMS
-verify phone can receive and send text messages and multimedia messages. Send both group and individual messages. Perform these tasks while in a phone call (note that MMS messages will only be allowed from 4G if you are in a phone call as 3G gets disabled).
-Verify MMS function has no issues sending various types of media such as sound clips, recordings, videos, and pictures. Verify camera works properly from the SMS/MMS application.
-Verify keyboard is working properly and accurately. If keyboard seems to be inaccurate, try navigating to settings>langauge and keyboard>touch input>text input and calibrate the keyboard. Also, try disabling vibrate while typing to have a little bit smoother operation if you have quick thumbs
CAMERA
-verify camera has no issues capturing various types of media such as pictures and video recordings.
-Verify the resolution selected for said recordings is the one recorded by navigating to SD card via a file explorer (Root Explorer, ES File Explorer, etc.) and checking properties of recorded media.
-Verify sound is working on selected media where sound is applicable.
-Verify indicated special features of camera (as indicated by your ROM dev) are functioning as they should.
-Verify the 3D function is working properly and that media is appearing in 3D when viewed.
MEDIA
-verify all downloaded/installed media is functioning properly and being utilized by the system properly by moving various apps back and forth from SD card with no errors.
-Verify drivers are being detected by computer (sometimes if errors are found here, you can fix it by simply disconnecting phone and reconnecting or by restarting the computer).
-Verify external storage (SD card) is being detected by the system in settings. Verify phone can properly mount to a computer as storage and charge only.
-Verify pictures can be viewed by gallery application and "x" file explorer with no errors.
-Verify native screenshot function is functional and that such media is viewable via SMS, gallery, and "x" file explorer.
-Verify youtube, FB, and all other media applications (where applicable to you) are allowing media uploads directly from your device.
SOUND
-verify sound is working throughout the device. Check notifications (Gmail, SMS, MMS), media sound, incoming phone calls, and most importantly your alarms. Set multiple alarms for various times throughout the day, with different types of ringones such as a music file, a stock ringtone, and downloaded ringtone.
-Verify volume rocker adjusts volume properly for phone volume and media volume.
-Verify different types of media are playing through speakers and through headphone output. Check MP3's, games, videos, and web-based media such as youtube with this criteria.
-Verify haptic feedback is functional and vibrate mode is also functional.
BASIC ANDROID SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY
-Verify the following functions are working:
*blinking LED's for notifications
*auto rotation
*auto brightness/manual brightness settings
*long press home button (this should bring up your recently used apps. This function can be performed at any time, on any screen, regardless of what app or task you are performing.)
*long press search button (this should bring up your voice recognition)
*from home screen, tap search button (this should bring up google search. You can search internet or installed applications from this function.)
*camera hard button
HEAVY MULTI-TASKING (these are just some I like to do)
-while in a phone call, open up my backup root and perform a full data backup, and a full applications backup. After initializing backup, connect to 4G and browse around the web. Periodically check status of backup by long pressing the soft home key on your phone and selecting my backup root. When it is
finished, open up root explorer, or another capable file manager, and extract (decomress) a .zip file. I like to use ROM.zips for this as they tax the system pretty hard for resources. After that finishes, send an email with a video attached to it. While all of these are happening, engage in a SMS conversation. Eat it iPhone.
SYSTEM LONGEVITY AND SELF MANAGEMENT
-Run phone for a week without shutting it off or powering it off and with no reboots.
That's it for now. Off to bed. Let's get as much information in here as possible. Tomorrow I will include various problems I have encountered when flashing ROMs, kernels, etc., and how to troubleshoot such issues.
Nighty folks.
well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. lolz
Cool, ill look into this more when i get off work.
good intentions bud but not the root of many probs on the rom front are from users NOT flashing properly and having other stuff mess up the base rom they installed.
I'd put a big note at the very top to tell people when they flash a new rom to do a FULL WIPE DATA and everything else, then flash the rom.
Once this is done restore NOTHING from TB or anything like that as it can sometimes cause problems. THEN just use the phone as normal and put it through the motions to see if everything is good to go.
Too many times people do not do a full wipe and have issues OR they restore something from TB or MyBackupPro, that causes issues.
Also along the lines of battery life i am an avid user of SystemPanelPro in the market. I strongly suggest installing that and turning monitoring on as that will give you the best detail about your battery life and also makes it 100000x easier to see when a rogue app is killing your battery as opposed to it being the rom/kernel itself.
You can add StabilityTest app as way to ensure the phone is stable if OC or UV.
Good ideas...
and yes, it was merely an idea. i have had something similar to this written up for a long time. i use it to test roms.
and i thought about that but figured putting a header at the top is useless because people don't freaking listen. lol
"oooohhh waaahhhh i dont want to wipe my data"... it's just laziness. then those same people come back crying about some rogue issue they have that nobody else has. hahaha

with that thinking then the thread you posted is pointless as well. lol

This thread has potential. I like what it could be developed into.
Yes that's kinda the idea I had in mind. I will work on it more tonight. If we can develope it into something extremely thorough we could sticky this and have a very solid platform for testing troubleshooting/roms
bastardized rom. it's fast. get some.
Not dissing your idea our intentions in any way, but I think that most of what you posted is just basic use of the phone that everyone already does anyway... maybe even on a daily basis . Well, except for doing a backup, browsing the internet, and sending a text while in a phone call. I also agree with starting the thread by saying that you should do a fill wipe (cache, dalvik, and factory reset) before flashing ANY rom even if it is a update/newer version of the current rom you are using. Also, all of these tests should be done before syncing or restoring ANY thing (except for the tests that are actually testing the sync and restore functions obviously). As stated before, most issues do come from the user either not wiping correctly or from restoring something they shouldn't be. Plus, thanks to our amazing devs, just about every rom in this section is pretty solid except for the AOSP betas...

working on this now, due to a few people i have seen post about their alarms not working in the morning.
stanglife, i understand your point, however, sometimes it is hard to remember to test EVERYthing vital as a user. my goal here is to prevent people from having the "oops this doesn't work, now i am late to work" scenario happen to them.
i strongly feel that once this is fine tuned and dialed in for every key function of the phone, it should be stickied in the development section so it is more accessible to people just passing through. dev's work hard, but sometimes one user will experience a glitch that NOBODY else has, just a fluke... and performing tests like this will help people get a solid idea of how reliable THEIR phone is before they decide to use it.
Hello, for the past few weeks i've been using cm 7.1 on my i9100 and I'd be glad to say that the rom is perfect, if some issues didn't come up. Firstly, since the first day of use, i've realized that the sound volume (both from speaker and headset) is fairly low compared to samsung's rom (to be frank going above 50-60% in volume options doesn't make a difference). Is there any solution to this? CM 9 apart from the "known issues" got that bug too?
The second problem came up a few days ago and it's related to the android market app. Everytime you scroll through an app's details, the phone freezes and the only way to restore it, is to turn it off and on again. Currently, i'm using app brain which doesn't seem to have that problem, but i really love google's app. So, any solution to that?
Try the app in my sig to give the headset/headphone volume a boost, works really well & only distorts the volume at very high levels (>75% which you shouldn't need). There are apps on the Market which can boost the speaker volume, not sure how well these work as I haven't tried any.
So far as the Market is concerned, I use a CM based rom and have had that problem as well. The only fix I've come across/read about is to restore a much earlier version of the market (hopefully someone else reads this thread and has a fix that can help both of us ). I haven't done this myself as I've trained myself to do all my scrolling thru app details on my PC first & simply do the install/update on my phone without scrolling thru the details , but I'm sure a search on here should dig up something/the apk you need.
Ask in the right place may get an answer quicker .

Hi xda Community,
at first - BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU ACTIVE CUSTOM ROM GUYS!!
With all your FAQs, Videos and postings, you made it possible - and easy - for me, to get rid of the annoying Sony ROM by rooting and installing a custom rom.
Currently I am running CM10 FXP230 on my Xperia U. I know it is not a stable version, but still a great improvement in speed for me and also the first ROM i discovered during my internet research for an alternative to the slow stock sony stuff.
However, i am facing some problems during the daily usage of my phone, perhaps one of you can support me during finding a solution for some of them.
1. Updating ROM
Pretty basic question, just need a confirmaton that i understood it the right way. I download the new Version of the custom rom (e.g.fxp232), copy the zip onto the smartphone and reboot into recovery mode. There i use CMW to first wipe cache and delvik cache, then select and install new version from zip.
Correct way so far?
What about the Google Apps? Do i have to reinstall them too?
Do i have to backup the SD card data and my apps,?
2. The Camera Fix
At the beginning i thought that i could live with an inverted camera due to the fact, that i am not taking many of them with my phone. but during the last weeks i had to face the facts - its important from time to time :cyclops:
During my search in this forum i found a user linking to a file called "FXP231_CM10_CamReverse_Fix".
Does this work only with FXP231, or also earlier and later versions?
How do I install it, like gApps in CMW?
3. Alarm Clock
I am using my phone as an alarm clock almost every day. Its plugged in to recharge during the night. Sometimes the phone crashes during the night time and the alarm is not going off. The display turns dark, no reaction to any button i plress, only the little signal light at the top right is glowing constantly. I have to take out the battery every time and make the same changes in settings over and over again.
Is this the "deepsleep" problem everyone is talking about? Is it connected to the cpu settings - I did select "conservative" there. Whats causing the problem?
4. Dial Pad
Every time i am dialing an unknown number the touchpad is hardly responding. It can take up to 5 minutes to enter all numbers and dial. I already deactivated the T9 contact search, still no improvement. Anyone any similar expieriences?
5.General Custom ROM Question
During my journey through this Community I found out, that there are a lot of different roms available. Some - with only minor changes - based on other custom roms, some based on sony.....whatever. Right now i am totally confused that ROM to use (if the above mentioned problems cant be solved!!)
I just need a quiet fast and reliable ROM to use in daily life - well this is everyones wish i guess......
So what am I doing with my phone? Basically I am just using my phone to call people, use whatsapp, check mails, manage my appointments and take a spontaneus picture from time to time. No Video, Twitter, Facebook, Games and what else is out there...........and no big experiments and time to backup, upgrade and reset my phone stuff every week.
Should I go back to CM9?
Cant I install a "normal google android" rom? Might sound stupid, but isnt there some kind of "pure" rom for all phones, that gives you the same comfort as the sony stock rom (-> update and functionality) ?
Even if there is not THE correct answert to this question, maybe some of you can at least suggest some interesting ROMs, that might fit
uff.....long wall of text, hopefully I could point out my problems good enough to motivate you to spent your time to answer them.

First of all, this is a long question and you must donate me for answering. Haha. Just joking but you need to consider yourself and get experiences.
1. Reboot CWM and install the ROm amd Gapps needs to be reinstalled.
Wipe dalvik cache and cache then reboot. You're updated.
2. It is for FXP231 and so you must install 231 in order to have fixed
3. Go to deepsleep so much in CM10. Some said pretty awesome because it saves battery but it is in deep sleep so you can't really control your phone no more. Like you can't awake in the morning because you are in deep sleep.so hard to wake up. And yes your problem is deep sleep.
4. Use Go Dialer or Touchpal Dialer. Download from Play Store. It will make you better. Stock is still laggy and under development.
5. I run SlimCM which is CM9 and everything works except sound bug and FM Radio. Sound bug can be fix with Viper4Android. Run CM9 which is great, fast and stable.
And I really want to advice you is find out more yourself. It's more getting trouble but you will become more awesome I answer your question short so don't mind me about that but if you need anything, just quote and ask. Bye.

Sorry for asking again, but most times i just dont have the needed phrase to search for - combines with 50+ pages of results it really drives me crazy sometimes. After making a, lets say really stupid mistake, installing the rom in the beginning, it took me almost ages to find the threat to return to the beginning and reinstall it properly.

Thanks a lot for reading and answering my questions anyway, you got yourself a honest "thanks button klick" as a reward
Okay, so now i know that "my deepsleep problem" is kind of a reversed version of almost everyone eleses deepsleep problem. Everyone wants his phone to enter deepsleep, i want to prevent that.
Will this app solve the problem? Deep Sleep Battery Saver
I mean, if I can set the phone to "wake up" short before my alarm time it might work, right?
I read something about Apps causing the problem, especially messenger apps. Can anyone verify that information, or is it some random guess?
Edit:
Also I found out, that the Phone should not enter deepsleep while being charged. Unfortunately this seems to happen to mine over and over again.

DS battery saver is the one for some phones that cannot go into deepsleep. It force the phone to Deep Sleep with some profiles to make your phone not deaf. Good app and I'm using it.
Blah blah blah, anyway, it's the ROM problem I think but you can simply reply FXP's CM10 about the fix No worries. I think you can fix nothing at this stage. And also I thought Alarm app crashing amd screen not waking up is not only the Deep Sleep issues but also the rom bug of excessive Deep Sleep or alarm app not fully functional. Please reply to the rom thread and wait for answer! High Five!!

first off, i apologize if this doesn't belong here, but i cannot post and ask in the main thread for CM11 in development, as i don't post much, working more on the less you talk the more you listen mentality. However i cannot find anything regarding the integrated (i call it integrated as i cannot find any app which obviously related to it which i could get rid of), which is the video player when playing videos from other websites than youtube, it opens the video with this plug-in like video player.
Now in cm10.1 i could choose to open it with any video player i had installed, after updating to CM11 it just opens it up with that plug-in like player, which is really awkward and slow to use... and i want to get rid of it, however i failed to find anything regarding it on forums or google, not exactly sure what to look for, but did search for everything i could think of, there seemed to be a mention of this without an answer in the development thread though.
I checked settings in both default browser and chrome, opera mini just downloads the video file, which i don't want either. tried disabling java, basically dug through all the settings too... reset my app defaults etc.
If anyone has solution, or suggestions to solving this, please let me know as i spent few hours digging on it with no success :silly:
I am on CM11 nightlies, galaxy s3 i9300. And well any suggestions are appreciated... just want the selection for what to open video link with back.

I've tried that, did reset them, no effect. Was one of the first things i tried... just to be completely clear i want the dialogue to select app when encountering video files online flash or mp4 or whatever to choose what to open them with instead of the attached screenie...
In the same boat... using CM11.. I am trying to set 'Avia' as my default player (to play videos through chromecast)..
however couldn't find a way to set this.. and AOSP/Chrome/Dolphin browser starts to play videos (and flash videos) using internal video player inside the browser itself.. and somehow I couldn't find the default internal video player in the Settings -> Apps section. I even disabled 'Gallery' app.. any idea would be appreciated.

Hi all,
I am using GingerBread for Samsung Note 1. My music player no longer updated the playlist when I added new songs to the phone.
I guess there must be crash in the updating of the playlist database. Any method that I can use to determine how the crash happened and then I can try to fix it? (I rooted the phone )
Thanks.

First off...Gingerbread?! Really?! There are stable versions of Jelly Bean for your phone! Secondly, are you using the stock Samsung music player, or another app. But I would go into Settings / Application Manager and clear the data of your music app. Hopefully once you restart it, it will rebuild your playlists. That or your media scanner isn't working that well. Typically when you reboot, it should rescan the media on your phone and then it'd show up in the app.
Thirdly... Gingerbread?! lol Please, do yourself a favor and update! Not only will you have better performance (and likely battery life), but you will have access to more apps, lots of new features, as well as a more secure / safer system.
As far as telling what happened, you would have to get a logcat going when the issue happens (though I am not so sure there will be anything obvious for this sort of thing). Easiest way to do logcats are probably just on the phone with an app like alogcat.

As far as telling what happened, you would have to get a logcat going when the issue happens (though I am not so sure there will be anything obvious for this sort of thing). Easiest way to do logcats are probably just on the phone with an app like alogcat.
