Hi all,
I am using GingerBread for Samsung Note 1. My music player no longer updated the playlist when I added new songs to the phone.
I guess there must be crash in the updating of the playlist database. Any method that I can use to determine how the crash happened and then I can try to fix it? (I rooted the phone )
Thanks.

First off...Gingerbread?! Really?! There are stable versions of Jelly Bean for your phone! Secondly, are you using the stock Samsung music player, or another app. But I would go into Settings / Application Manager and clear the data of your music app. Hopefully once you restart it, it will rebuild your playlists. That or your media scanner isn't working that well. Typically when you reboot, it should rescan the media on your phone and then it'd show up in the app.
Thirdly... Gingerbread?! lol Please, do yourself a favor and update! Not only will you have better performance (and likely battery life), but you will have access to more apps, lots of new features, as well as a more secure / safer system.
As far as telling what happened, you would have to get a logcat going when the issue happens (though I am not so sure there will be anything obvious for this sort of thing). Easiest way to do logcats are probably just on the phone with an app like alogcat.

Hi there,
Up until a few weeks ago, I was an iPhone user, but never really enjoyed it that much. I got myself a SGS2 with Telstra, so far network and phone have been alright. Downloads at around 8.6MB consistently.
My phone specs are as follows:
Model: GT-I8100T
Version: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100TDVKF2
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100TDVKF4-CL301812 [email protected] #2
Build number: Gingerbread.DVKF4
1)
I am new to all this and would like to understand more about what all the above actually means. Does anyone have a tutorial or link explaining it all?
2)
I have heard about "rooting" your phone. Can someone either tell me or direct me to somewhere that can outline what rooting is, why someone would do it and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
3)
There are things about this phone I cannot stand:
The browser always crashes (so I have replaced with with Dolphin HD).
You cant turn of Camera snapshot sound.
When ever i unplug earphones and plug them back in the media volume automatically decreases.
The stock media player does a terrible job at being good, moved to winamp (are there any better ones, perhaps a rip of the iphone music player?).
Battery Life is terrible (if I use GPS guidance, phone would be lucky to last a day).
I find that the phone takes a long time to "load media from sd card" is that normal? (I have a class 4 mini sd 32gb).
Last of all, Facebook for android runs terribly on this phone. Can't upload photos, or even view my own. I can't work out why. Tried reinstalling.
I thank you in advance for any help or links you can provide me with.
Cheers.

I can't say I ever noticed the stock Samsung browser crashing on my device.
If you are rooted, you can permanently disable the camera noise by renaming the shutter sound ogg file in /system/media/audio/ui. Rename it to .ogg.bak and it should stop the noise.
I liked the stock media player but there are other popular music players like PowerAmp. Or even the music player from the MIUI ROM.
Welcome to smart phones. Battery life sucks. Get the official extended battery, root the phone, remove some bloat, install a custom kernel like SpeedMod. Also check Kies to see if your carrier has released an update for your phone. Android 2.3.3 is old and not very battery friendly.
I have a class 10 SD card and it doesn't take long to load at all.
Facebook for Android has always sucked but I have never had any problem with photos.

Thanks for the replies, been reading up a lot the last couple of hours.
Just a few questions for you:
1)
What exactly constitutes "bloat"? My phone comes with a few Telstra (my provider) apps like news bulletins, navigon (with free maps in AUS), but are there processors behind the scenes that I can't see that really slow it down that much?
2)
When you say "install a custom Kernal" I am not sure I understand entirely. I read the thread posted above, but is installing a different kernel the same as installing a new ROM? Do some ROMS include different Kernels? Do I need a new/different rom (from the stock) in order to install new kernels? Please explain in basic terms. I am guessing I need to root the phone in order to install kernels. By installing kernels, am I losing anything on my phone?
Thanks.

Consider rooting as jailbreak. Normally you don't have root access privileges on OS. But some programs or you yourself need to have root access to change something on OS.

Unlike iOS, android supports various hardwares, phones, tablets etc. iOS supports only the hardware used by apple. Therefore all unnecessary code has been pulled off from kernel and OS. That's why it feels faster and battery friendly.
In android there are some tricks to save your battery. Be patient and keep reading the forum, you'll learn in time

It depends on how many files you have on that storage, and yes it's annoying. However you can disable it with like this https://market.android.com/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot

Hello everybody. I'm a new one on this forum and have only basic knowledge about ROM's, so please be undestanding. I have installed the ICS with Cyanogen Mod, the newest update. I am happy with the new system, but there are a few problems which I would like to solve.
1. Volume mute - when I listen to music on Power Amp and an sms or call comes, the music mutes and doesn't come back to the volume after I answer the call/sms. I haven't found anything in settings to fix that, is there a solution?
2. Facebook sync - I can't synchronize the contacts from Facebook with the contacts on my phone. I click on "Facebook" in "Accounts" menu, turn the Fb on and nothing happens.
3. Multiple selection in contacts - I have to be completely blind or stupid, but I can't see the option of multiple selection in contacts anywhere. And it's disturbing, when I want to delete a few contacts at the same time, for example.
4. Battery life - the system sure runs smooth and nice, but requires a lot of power. I know that listening to music needs a lot of energy (and I listen to music on my phone very often), but when I had the previous Android version it was still consuming less energy. Now I have to charge the battery almost every day (previously every 3-2 days).
5. Music equalizers - they simply just don't work. Previously when I turned them on I heard a difference, now - none.
6. Youtube - previously I had a Youtube app and I could watch films in HQ. Is there a similar app for this system, some codecs, etc?
Yes, I know this doesn't look really professional, but I don't know how to solve those problems and I tried to explain everything in a simple way. So, is there a ROM that will fix those problems? I would really appreciate Your help.
Cheers, Kaja

Installed CM10-20121205 and the latest GApps. Did not restore any apps or data using Titanium. Flashed to s-off using DirtyRacun method.
Wiped System->Factory Wipe->Installed CM10 Rom->Installed GApps->Rebooted
Alright, so I did all of that and everything seems to be working fine. However I still feel as though the phone is behaving just as badly as it used to with regards to multi-tasking. I'll give two examples with my favorite browser (Dolphin) and music player (Poweramp).
The browser issue I don't think is anything the folks here won't be familiar with. Use browser, exit browser for a bit, return to browser only to have to reload all pages/tabs. Annoying...
My next example involves the Poweramp widget. I listen to a lot of MP3s that call for a functioning bookmarking feature. I like/need to be able to resume tracks where I left off when pausing, putting the device to sleep for later use. When resuming a track by going to the Poweramp app ->Now Playing->Unpause it resumes just fine. If I unpause from the widget on one of my home screens it almost ALWAYS restarts the track from the beginning. This happens with both long (4 hour) mp3s and short songs (2-3 minutes).
Perhaps someone could explain why that's happening? It doesn't appear after about a day of use that the phone is any "better" for multi-tasking. I've heard input from some folks describing this as unusual and others saying that Android is just sort of like that. I don't know. I just sort of got it in my head after hearing so many people complain about how this phone (Sense) handles multi-tasking that I thought flashing to a new rom would fix the problem.
If this is a case of lofty expectations it would be super to know. That way I don't go flashing to a hundred different roms to fix a problem that isn't technically considered a problem by anyone other than myself.

Second question! I've had no trouble using most every app that requires SU permissions (Titanium BU notably). However I've noticed that I am constantly having to grant SU permissions to apps even when I tell SU to remember my preference to allow. I've also not been able to get Wireless Tether OR WiFi Tether for Root Users to work correctly. I tried FoxFi and that seems to work just fine but doesn't require root (and costs money for the good version.
Any input would be vastly appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: I didn't see the "Is this post a question?" icon before posting this thread. I do apologize! Any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated. This forum and its community have been invaluable up to this point in my making my phone my own!
Just flashed over the MeanRom ICS and having the same problem.
I don't have that many widgets. Weather widget not on my home screen, power settings widget, power amp, and Google Search.
Wireless and WiFi Tether not working. Perhaps there's something wrong with how I rooted my phone? However, I ran a "root checker" app that came out okay, and my phone says s-off when in recovery mode.
It sounds like you have too many apps installed that run as services and are hogging memory. You can use an app like OS Monitor to see what's still active in memory and how much it's using up.
Just tried using the McTweaker Root app cynic method to fix multi-tasking and it unfortunately still seems broken. :/ I'm at a total loss.

Tested this theory but it doesn't really hold water. I'm not running that many apps all things considered, and I was having this problem when it was fairly app free...
Oi vey this is frustrating. I've spent the better part of a long ass time.
Is anyone getting endless force closes after installing the new Google Play Music? I've tried using two different Touchwiz Roms and even CM 10.1 and all of them seem to have issues running the app. Thoughts?
+1 on that issue. I just uninstalled play music for the time being. It was ridiculous the number of times it fc'd on me

Yea it does it on every device I own x.x

so it sounds like its an error with the app? I guess it makes sense because it's such a new service but it's also weird that some people are having no issues at all.
also having force closes
On my note running jedi rom, nexus 4 and my tablet. The radio feature works fine on PC but it won't start on the 4 or my tab. The music app itself closes constantly on my note though. I uninstalled the app and reloaded a previous version so I can atleast still listen to my purchased tunes.

I had the same force close problem on my GS3 only fix I found was to unroot. Once I unrooted it worked fine.

It's a very strange problem that alot of folks are having, I did take the update and I've had zero problems although they did change alot in this update. Im running clean rom 4.5 with perseus kernel, no overclock or undervolt, idk if it matters what your running it should be stable either way I use it all the time but still getting used to the new look. .

Looks like the update doesn't like too many songs. Deleted a few hundred and it works.

I have over 1000. It worked with 400-something.
I have just over 7000 songs. I am on an S3 on T-Mobile. I tried the new Google play music on several roms, included stock rooted and the app was unusable because of the force closes. I reverted back to the old version of Google play music, unrooted, let my music sync, then upgraded to the new version through the play store, and it has been working for 3-4 days without any problems. I rerooted the phone to test and sure enough the force closes came back. I repeated the process stated above and it works perfect again. I am convinced "root" was causing the force closes... At least in my case. Hope this helps.

I was having the same problem and I just found a way to make it work for me.
1. Turn off phone.
2. Eject SD card
3. Reboot
4. Open Play Music and go through the setup making sure that it doesn't crash
5. Turn phone back off and insert SD card
6. Reboot
For me after those steps it is still working.
Edit: Until I put my music back on my sd card.

I thought the SD Card was the issue too. I've got a little over 3000 songs and I thought it was the loading process causing the FC's so I had done what you post above on 3 separate roms and all have FC'd. It has even FC'd before even launching the application. I have decided to just wait it out and hope that Google solves this issue soon. I have faith in them to get things fixed pretty soon like they usually do. Thanks for the tips though!

I forgot that I had taken all my music off of my SD card before I did those steps. Once I added it back to my card it started happening again after I refreshed. But it didn't start until near the end of the refresh. It looks like there are certain tracks that it doesn't like, or after a certain amount of music on your sd card it stops working.
+1 on this issue, hope they fix it soon, having to use the touchwiz music player and it sucks.
non-rooted, galaxy s II with 4.1.2, about 3000 songs and 64 gb sd card.

This time I'm pretty sure I have the fix. It is definitely working for me. There's a problem with the album art in the mp3's ID3 tags. I'm pretty sure it's only the art from a few of them but good luck finding which ones. If you delete all the album art from all mp3's you should be able to run the app without problems. You'll have to delete all the music from your phone and re copy it. You might have to delete everything you've uploaded to Google then re upload that too, but I'm not sure about the last part. Hope this helps.

I was thinking the same problem being with album art but I can install Google Music without ANYTHING on my SD card and external SD card and it will still crash. It's very odd so I guess I'm just going to wait until Google pushes next update that will hopefully fix it. I've seen quite a good amount of people complaining so I'm sure Google will look into it.

I saw some people say yesterdays update fixed the problem but I'm not sure since I already wiped album art. If you have uploaded music to Google with album art it doesn't like that could still be causing the problem.

Wow. I have not even tried updating for the past few days. I just updated, streamed a few songs, and smoothly went through my library without a single FC. Looks like they have updated and it is working just fine now for me! Thank you very much! haha
I have not found this anywhere else, so I finally have to ask.
When I receive a phonecall, the phone rings. I answer the phone, put it to my ear, then suddenly the stock music player starts playing a song. I have to go into the app and pause it every time. When the phonecall is over, the app closes itself.
My first attempt was to try and see what options were on in each app, but there doesn't seem to be anything related to something like this in either music players or the phone app. I went ahead and just disabled / uninstalled ANY music-related apps (player, pandora, winamp...) and tested it, and it still happens! How can the app run when frozen?
I'm really at my wits end here, can anyone offer any insight?
Sounds like a bug with the model of your phone. If you are running on a rooted phone I would recommend freezing the default music player and trying another player. On my phone I ended up freezin the app and installing a player then moved the app just installed to my system apps folder that way it stays there on a reformat. Hope this gives you some ideas...sorry I cant offer a fix. Keep me updated.

Ah yea, forgot to mention this was total stock.
But that's the thing, it is disabled! I had disabled it through the applications manager. And it still happens. Just wild. Not gonna root+TiBu+Freeze yet, so we'll have to see.
Ill see if i can find a fix. If you have headphones in does in still autoplay?
