Brick?!?! - Motorola Droid RAZR

Okay, so I'm not a noob in rooting, but I am in the Razr. I just root my phone using motofail, and I installed safestrap 1.09 enabled safe mode did a backup hit reboot, now my phone screen is black and my phone isn't responding. Please help me.. I'm suppose to be getting a new razr today or tomorrow in the mail, and I was rooting it, so I could have a backup for the new one, but now it's looking like I'm out a $600 phone...

All kinds of info in the development section.

Alright, so please someone correct me if this is incorrect. Safestrap is our recovery, that or bootstrap. When you enable safe system it enables you, dual boot basically. So if you have safe system off it'll boot into your primary rom, which in my case is my stock rooted rom. So when I enable safe system and flash a rom into that, which will be AOKP ICS, it should boot into to that. So basically it's a dual boot. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't wanna mess up my phone because I'm making accusations, that maybe false. This information isn't very easy to find, at least not for me.

It isn't dual booting per say. It is having one side safe (the non rom side) incase you have issues you can go back to your safe side.

CWM recovery vs ROM Manager need Backup before GiingerBlur

Hello,
I'm new. I got my Atrix 5 days ago. I migrated from an iPhone 3g. I am on AT&T. I have done TONS of research before doing anything with my phone. I really dont want to brick it and I want to make sure im doing it right the first time and everytime. since its new it has 1.83 on android ver 2.2. I rooted using gingerbreak, obtained sideloading and tether using Gladiatrix. I am contemplating installing Gingerblur but I am hesitant. its not the installation that worries me. its the uninstalling should something go wrong. I understand creating a nandroid back is the way to go as I SHOULD be able to reflash to my backed up stock ROM. and be MOSTLY back to where I am now. here is my problem... HOW? I have done hours of combing numerous forums looking for how to create a nandroid backup. I understand ROM Manager is the way to go. but it keeps telling me "you must have clockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing. Install the recovery through ROM Manager first." so i click "install" and a dialog box pops up and gives me multiple phones to choose from, none of which is my Atrix. so i did more research and found another way (I think) using the Moto a4 bootstrap located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143 using these instructions (watch from 3:08 to 4:46). Is this where I am going wrong? Im getting this screen (also has a "charge boot" button): http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k...kMod-Recovery-for-Motorola-Atrix-4G_thumb.png
what am I missing? What am I doing wrong? how do i create a nandroid backup?
I have found numerous posts/sites that tell me to use ROM Manager but im getting the above error.
Do I even want GingerBlur this bad?
thanks for listening and I really hope someone has some answers soon as I have spent HOURS looking for an answer. in the mean time im going to bed.
You're almost there. Click Install Recovery. Allow root. Make sure your phone is plugged into the wall charger. Then click Recovery Boot. Your phone will reboot into recovery, and there should be a menu item for backing up your phone. Use the volume up/down to navigate the menu and the wake button to select.

I appologize for the subject, I typed it out else where on my pc and copy/pasted it in and missed the subject.
Thanks, the instructions I had found were very blurry when he got to the recovery mode portion and i couldnt tell if there was a backup option.
so this AM went into recovery mode and made a backup to my external SD card. will ROM Manager work at this point? or is it not completely supported yet (because its not in the list)
I feel much more comfortable trying out Gingerblur at this point now that I have a backup of the stock ROM.
Thanks for your help, and again sorry bout the subject, simple mistake.

I got this answer on another forum with a similar question:
In a nutshell, in order to use CWM and do a Nandroid backup, you must use a phone that has an unlocked bootloader; which allows certain changes to be made to the Operating System which enables those two apps. The Atrix has not yet been unlocked, and Gingerblur is not a true ROM. It's only a "pseudo-ROM"...more like a theme on Android than a rewritten version of Android, which is what a true ROM is. So, in other words, "you can't get there from here".

... we cannot use ROM Manager at all because of our current locked status.

[Q] How to fix Recovery mode problem?

Build#: 4.5.2A-51_OLL-17
System: 45.2.17.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA
Version: 2.3.4 (on rooted stock Gingerbread)
I rooted my 2.3.4 Bell Atrix using the instructions on Atrixforums website, and it worked like a charm. Then i went into the market and downloaded ROM Manager, through which i flashed the latest Clockwork Mod Recovery. Since this was going to be my first time flashing a Custom ROM, I followed online advice of performing a Nandroid backup. I pressed "Backup Current ROM" in ROM Manager, and my phone turned off. When it turned back on, I was at the Motorola Dual Core screen, and at the top there was a message: "Failed to boot 2 Starting RSD Mode". After reading some more on the forums, I noticed that I never unlocked my phone and that I couldn't flash a custom Recovery meaning Nandroid backups won't work.
But now I'm stuck with a broken Recovery mode and I don't know what to do to fix this. Can I still flash the original recovery image back to fix the Failed to boot error?
Can someone please help point me to the right direction?
Thanks
Try pulling the battery. Hope that works, then unlock your phone, re root it and install rom racers recovery and you should be good to go. Thoroughly read the beginners thread, it will answer a lot of your questions and help walk you through everything you ned to do. Saved me a lot of hassle and headaches

to unlock my phone, don't i need to get into the recovery mode first? I can still boot into the homescreen and do stuff, but it's just the recovery mode is screwed up. RSD lite and stuff still works though. Would you be kind enough to provide a link to the right direction to unlock the phone? Will this fix my recovery mode problem? I've been going on a wild goose chase to find a way to install a custom ROM and alot of the posts were for the AT&T Atrix (or at least i believe it's only compatible with the ATT Atrix).
no, you have to use RDS to flash a unlockable bootloader, use fastboot, and then install the custom recovery

i am having this same exact problem as the original poster. i am still new to the "rooting" world, and the motorola atrix is quite a bit more difficult then the other devices i have rooted, if someone could link a guide to follow it would be very much appreciated, i have been browsing the forum for quite awhile now searching for a guide. again, thank you very much for your time and please excuse my ignorance.

[Q] Uses for bricked X2...

Hey guys, I think I'm in trouble. Two weeks ago I got an X2, and soon after discovered the Modding and Root world. Needless to say I ended bricking with Rom Manager. Obviously a user error... Anyway, I was wondering if there might be somehow I could use the memory on the phone as an external hard drive or something. Could I install the zipped .sbf file to SanDisk, and if I find a way to get back in to recovery....you see where I'm going with this.
Thanks again

Yes I have. I rooted it initially and everything was fine until I lagged the system somehow with certain settings. The learning curve is not a big one, but its still existent. Anyway, I wiped and flashed .sbf perfectly. It was only when I rooted the second time and opted for a Mod where things went badly...I guess. No warning, the device just shuts off and comes back to the boot screen(Motorola emblem). No fastboot option or anything.

You'd be surprised by how many people on ebay and other sites want bricked devices. Some use them for parts and others just want to screw around with them.

I'd be very surprised if this was truly bricked. When you rooted the second time, did you get bootstrap recovery installed? If so you can pull the battery, leave it turned off and plug it into a wall charger. It should power itself on and take you right to ClockWorkMod recovery and from there you could Use ADB to push a working rom and start off on a clean slate (or restore a nandroid if you made one before flashing mods.)
Otherwise, I would suggest continuing trying to get in the device in RSD mode. Sometimes these phones can be finicky, I know when I first started messing with Androids it would often take several times to get to the Bootloader options rather than just powering on the device.
What was the questionable mod you used?

Have you tried following my tutorial on SBF? Try holding the Volume Up button and see if you get to the "Starting RSD" (or something like that). You should be able to SBF from there.
The link is in my signature or here: HowTo: Perform a SBF ("factory restore") of your Motorola Droid X2

If it truly is bricked, you could use it for batting practice. I've wanted to do that to a working X2 many times, so I know I would if it were bricked
Sbf sbf S B F
make sure u charge ur battery full up before flashing sbf file
Like moon said power button and volume up starts rsd protocol
If that doesn't work there is also a thing called ezSBF someone can tell ya bout
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 Beta-6
I've tried the fastboot(volume button) method and there is nothing. No response what so ever. I've never even heard of EZsbf, but I'm gonna try it out. Oh, whoever asked about the MOD a while ago....it was gingerbread I think. The only thing I wanted was to overclock my cpu's just a bit, but ended up getting in way over my head very quickly. The light comes on when the phone is plugged in with no battery and stays on. Other than that no change. Hey thanks guys, alot!
No not fast boot
That shows when u press power and volume down together(u need to hold both buttons down)
Instead
PRESS POWER BUTTON AND VOLUME UP AT SAME TIME and hold them BOTH for about 10seconds. U should see "starting RSD protocol..." at the top of ur screen
If u don't then u probly need to charge ur battery
Also
We have NO WAY to over clock due to our locked bootloader. You need to be able to install a custom kernel to be able to over clock and we can't do that.
I recommend not to try any mods or anything outside of this DROIDX2 development forum(don't even use stuff made for original X it will mess ur phone up. And definitely stay away from atrix, photon, etc...even if something says "universal mod/tweak/hack" its most likely gonna break ur x2 cuz the x2 is just a finnicky ass phone lol)
Good luck!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 Beta-6
You need to reinsert the battery, keep the phone off, then plug it in to the wall charger. If you had BSR installed it'll boot into recovery.

Yeah, you're right! Still new to threading! I was able to initialize DSP Restore, but I didn't have bootstrap prior to the crash, but beca use the X2 was now recognized I could push the .sbf using DSPlite. Then, once the nano was open I just factory defaulted, because my service wasn't recognized by my carrier.... And they all modded happily ever after. I do have a question though: what do you think about trying the root again and instead of manually removing the fluff programming I get a manger to take care of it? This thing is factory pure right now. Btw, I'd like to call attention to where this is being posted from. That is called success...thanks again.

There is a list in this forum from a long while ago that has what's safe to remove and what isn't.
But the easiest thing u could do is to flash either eclipse, molten, liberty , or cm7
They will pretty much get rid of ALL the bloat that is safe to remove and cm7 will even remove ALL the blur skin along with bloat and give you an AOSP experience with your device
signature: 404 error
I'm going to try it....now!
Its pretty hard to brick these devices with the SBF file Motorola supplies. And just a suggestion for future reference, DO NOT use ROM manager with this phone. ROM manager is more for phones with an unlocked bootloader which this phone doesnt have. Some things will work but some things will mess up your phone.

But make a nandroid first!
That way if u wanna go back u don't need to flash sbf u can just restore ur nandroid and be on ur way lol

Ok, just to check my rationale: I'm going to create a Nandroid, to the SD, but I should download CM7 to my PC and install it that way so as not to lag or cause any complications with the X2. Correct?

I had a similar issue. Through a long list of things that I tried, I was able to get back in. However, WIFI does not work at all, and none of the fixes posted here have worked.
Did you have bootstrap and a backup prior? That would be helpful for you. Try cold booting through linux. If that alone doesn't work, here is what I did. I cold booted though linux to get in after using the us cellular SBF, then I was able to restore my backup. Again, this got me back into the phone, but no WIFI.
Not sure if that helps at all.

I am going to copy/paste this.
This will recover from brick, when you are permanently locked on Photon after 2.3.5 OTA update.
Take USC_19 full sbf from 2.3.5 sv2 custom sbf thread, flash that, wipe data in recovery, root it, install bootstrap recovery.
After that, you can flash mof 2.3.5ish rom or my rom (locked).
Then install bootstrap recovery again, if it's not preinstalled there. And flash 254_13 modules. After that flash 2.3.5sv2 unbrick sbf with 254_13 boot, recovery and cdrom. If you have no radio service, flash 254_12 libmoto_ril.so.
Here is the thread he copied that from. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798145
Hopefully we both can solve our problems with that.
Thanx to u peetr_ sir..... great... help... nw my photon is perfectly workng....

I managed to get it rooted but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the phone into a non stock recovery. every time I try, it goes into the stock recovery, even if I choose reboot recovery from rom manager. I tried flashing the rom from the stock recovery but that did not work. If someone could please point me in the right direction for a recovery program (loki) that will work with my phone I would really appreciate it.
Im hoping the problem isn't with the root but I havn't had any other issues. I downloaded:

Im sorry if this is noob stuff but I used to do it all the time with my old DX and now I can barely get it rooted! (took hours) proper recovery is the next step toward a GPE ROM I hope. Thanks, a bunch, nap time

It is possible to install this rom, you just have to use Safestrap.
This is how to install:
Note: SafeStrap doesn't work with encryption turned on (disabled by default). If you don't know if you don't have encryption on/your phone isn't a business phone (in which case you shouldn't be doing this!!!) then you most likely don't have encryption on!!
6. Use this app to change your SELinux mode to "Permissive" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mrbimc.selinux, this is required to use SafeStrap
7. Install SafeStrap 3.72 APK from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2448925, NOT 3.71 FROM THE VERIZON THREAD!!! Then click install in the SafeStrap App
8. Install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu and update your binaries
Then to enter safestrap while rebooting hit menu key, from there you can flash your rom.

This does not work with safestrap its said over and over in the thread that it will not work. I tried it anyway per what you said and it wont get past the boot animation. You have to have an mdk bootloader and be able to install custom recovery for this to actually work.

thank you for that, which is why I have not messed with safestrap..its one of the first things in the post. so I guess that brings me back to where I started. Do I need to use the down grade method? If I do will it even work? and can somebody please point me in the direction of a proper (loki) recovery that I can flash and will work with my hardware. Thanks
EDIT -
believe me when I say I wouldn't be asking if I hadn't checked hundreds of threads already.
in case it helps, the end goal here is to get the GPE ROM on my phone. I'm rooted with towel. Ive gone in so many circles at this point I need someone who actually has done it or knows what they are talking about. Thanks!!!

If I downgrade to MDK firmware (I believe you can with surges method??), then I will be able to do this, correct? (without dealing with safestrap) by "this" I mean of course, finding a different recovery and flashing the GPE ROM.
If you read the top you would know that I spent MANY hours, reading MANY different threads and sites, that is why I am in the help section now. I'm not exaggerating when I say I spent from 11PM last night until 6:30 this morning with only a few breaks. I've flashed and re-flashed a million different files trying to get the results I wanted (bricked several times) and nothing worked, so this is my last resort

I see. So unless someone has a GPE ROM that works with safestrap, I am out of luck until a downgrade method, or some other alternate recovery mthod is found? I appreciate your time and help!

Understood. The learning curve has been very steep, as the last time I did this stuff there was only one version of each phone, sbf's were still around (don't know if they are or not anymore but it's not what I have to use to unbrick now) etc. Thanks so much for the replies and ill keep my eyes open for solutions as they are developed. I WILL have google play edition on my phone someday, and I thank all the dev's ahead of time for their hard work!
