[Q] freezes on boot up - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I just flashed "phone-bricker" ICS rom on my phone. I went to install the roms update, and when it restarted it froze on the first boot up screen.
I've tried to get to:
download mode
CWM
and normal restart
it always freezes on that screen
is there any way I can un-brick my phone?

Am i being trolled?

any power = not bricked

I just had the same problem with another ICS Rom. I ended up going to recovery and and wipe data/cache.
Pretty sure it's one of the apps that I downloaded since yesterday. Probably Antutu battery saver.

I appreciate all the hard work and sacrifice made by early adopters.

Anything that underclocks your device WILL cause it to crash - this is the case for all I9100 ICS kernels, stock or custom.
It almost surely applies to the I777 leak kernel too, since that build is an older codebase.

+1 Don't underclock I had my phone enter a sleep of death and then got really got while it was in my pocket. It then would freeze on boot until I wiped data.

boot looping for no reason, any help?

My SGS2 has been running AOKP for a few months now, all of a sudden today the phone keeps rebooting itself every few minutes. I have tried wiping cache, full wipe etc.... I tried installing a different kernel and also a different rom, now it's on ShoStock, but it continues to loop. Also I have flashed the newest version of CWM but everytime I reboot the phone it reverts back to the old version. Any ideas help?

How do you flash CWM?
I got no clue on the issue at hand other than to go back to stock and see if it persists, if it does its hardware.

Thanks guys, another issue I noticed is that the power button was acting really strangely. When you pressed it it wouldnt turn off the phone it would just bring up the restart menu or it wouldn't register at all, so I thought I had a hardware issue. Any finally I ran this kernel cleaner:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363738
did a full wipe etc...installed rom and then kernel and that has seem to do the trick. Going to hope that it continues to work and I don't have to go out and buy a new phone!
Looks like I have some donating to do.
Don't use ROM manager to flash cwm. As that is what it sounds like u did when u said u "flashed" cwm. Our kernels have recovery built in.

Thats what I was thinking :highfive:
I download the latest CWM (6.0.1.0), put the zip on my SD then boot into recovery and installed it as a zip, is that incorrect?

Yeah, that's probably incorrect.
For our phones, CWM is included in all custom kernels and isn't separate from the kernel at all. The only way to update CWM is to flash an updated custom kernel, like if Siyah or NEAK were to update for instance.
Don't bother trying to update CWM all the time, there's honestly little to no benefit from even trying and you'll likely end up with problems instead like you did this time. The version of CWM included with the custom kernels available is more than sufficient, just stick with those instead of trying to update it separately.
So I thought I fixed it but at last I haven't. After running the kernel cleaner, installing different roms/kernels the phone still boots for no reason after a while, not as often but at least 2-5 times a day. I am have no idea what's going on.

Yes it is definitely from my favorite series of books. This is one of the only forums I visit that I couldn't get just Mostly Harmless.
Doesn't really get hot, but after a while the power button stops responding and only time fixes this or a fresh install of a kernel. I formatted my SD card and the internal memory (without grabbing my pictures ) and any app I install is new from the market.

Help, Vibrant does not boot

I've been using the euphoria ROM for a few months now with no incident. The phone has never given me problems of any sort, well the bad GPS, but that's a known issue.
Anyhow the other night went to bed without charging my phone. In the middle of the night I woke up and realized it was not charging, so I connected the charger and went back to bed. However by that time my phone has fully discharged so I got the battery graphics.
In the morning when I tried to turn the phone on I got the spiral boot icon and then a black screen.
I've tried to get the recovery mode but to no avail. I know the phone is somewhat working because i get the spiral boot animation and the charging graphics but i cannot get the phone to turn on. Did anybody know a fix, any advice will help.
Thanks in advance
=X=
I like your name, X (thats my nickname around here )
Anyways, when you plug it in, does the charging stuff come up? (if yes, how much battery do you suppose its at?)
Have you tried download mode? (take out battery, plug in USB, put battery back in while holding... I think its vol up and down + power, after it says VIBRANT let power go)
I'm not sure if your phone even goes that far.
Likewise I like your nickname.
My battery is close to 100%. I tried the sequence you mentioned with no luck. I get the same behavior, I get the spiral boot graphics and the phone good black. With the cable connected I get the charging battery graphics. The graphics does work properly. When the battery gets to 100% it vibrates too

Just curious, what ROM/kernel were you on?
Also, by the spiral graphics are you talking about the bootanimation?
Are you on Froyo bootloaders or Gingerbread bootloaders?(if you don't know and have never messed with bootloaders its froyo)
I'm running Chimera v2.2. It's an ICS ROM made by team passion. The kernel is 3.1.10
Yes by the spiral I mean the boot animation. You only ever see it from a cold boot.
I don't know what boot loader I'm running.I think team passion is using the same one as Cyanogen. It's that common boot loader with a GUI.

Well the bootloader doesn't really use a GUI. You might be talking about the recovery, the one with "reboot system" and "install zip from sdcard"
What i was referring to was when i was installing the Chimera ROM I hadn't use a GUI app to install the ROM l. I thought the instructions mentioned it was installing a bootloader, but I could have miss read it.
Okay, X, I tried the steps again. I realize I did not follow all of your steps so I repeated them again. This time in tried the three finger salute with the USB plugged in and it worked. I get the recovery menu by choosing reboot it boots up properly.
However when I shutdown and turn on the phone I'm back to square one

Wait.. so when you tried my method your phone actually booted all the way up??
I was planning for you to go to Download mode and ODIN, but err..
Next time you go to recovery
*make sure you have a ROM in your sd card that is safe to flash, even if its chimera*
wipe data/factory reset
mount/storage > format system
flash your ROM in sd, then reboot
Yeah I wasn't expecting it to work. But now that that worked I am a bit nervous about installing a ROM incase the bootloader is corrupted.

:l, pretty sure you're confused, and the bootloader is not corrupted. If bootloader was corrupted, your phone would never start without a JTAG again.
Anyways, get into recovery, and flash chimera or any other safe rom you have, and see if it boots up. I think it may be something with Chimera.

Just a suggestion, don't re-install Chimera... Or at the very least, don't use it as a daily driver. I stand by that for two reasons. For one, Chimera may have been the reason you got into this problem in the first place. The second reason being... Well... Er... Chimera v2.2 isn't the best ROM out there, and it's kinda dated... I'm sure there's others that would agree. I mean there's plenty of other ICS ROMs available that run much better. Jellybean ROMs have also reached a point of stability, so there's some good Jellybean flavored options to choose from as well. Personally, I'm running ParanoidAndroid (JB) and I'm lovin' it.
Just my two cents... But if you like Chimera, then stick with it. It's definitely a usable ROM.

Awesome. If you're like me -- a big fan of customization -- then I'm sure you'll love ParanoidAndroid (LINK).
Otherwise there are ten other JB ROMs to choose from, and about seventeen different ICS ROMs to choose from (excluding Chimera v2.2). Links to said ROMs can be found in the "ROM" section of the Vibrant Bible thread (LINK).
EDIT: Sorry if I kinda' veered this thread off topic... Have you gotten you're phone running fine now =X=?

No it did not work. I thought all was good. It seemed to work when I performed a soft shutdown. Then I tried a cold boot: shutdown the phone, pulled the battery and on startup the phone would not work.

Awesome thanks for the links. It sounds like paranoid android will for my likes. I'm going to update my phone with that rom.
I'm still having problems with my phone however.
So I've upgraded my phone to the latest ParanoidAndroid but I'm still getting the same problem.
All works fine once it's running but I have to use the USB and three finger boot to get the phone to start, once I'm in the recovery mode selecting her restart launches the OS .
However trying to start the phone from a cold boot does not seem to work...any ideas anyone?

It's probably not bootloader-related, but for what it's worth, froyo bootloaders don't work well with ICS Roms.
Chances are it's just a ROM issue, but if that fails just ODIN to default, re-root, install GB bootloaders, etc. (Basically, start over)
I have run many ICS and JB ROMs without issue running froyo boots. It was mostly GB ROMs that had issue and needs GB boots. I don't suspect that to be the issue however, it won't hurt to try it.

[Q] Device freezing and rebooting

Hello,
For the past months I've been experiencing a lot of problems with my device: The device frozes or slow up with no apparent reason. It happens either when I'm in Whatsapp, or Facebook, or just listening music. It doesn't look to have any special app to behave like that. Locking and unlocking the screen becomes a pain and at some point after freezing it just turns off or reboot. Sometimes it just reboots even when I don't use it.
At the beginning I thought that the problems were related to the operator stock rom, then I jumped to Rootbox rom and nothing has changed. The phone keeps freezing and rebooting.
I've read that it might be related to a RAM issue, but I don't know if still have warranty so I'd like to check out everything else before taking it to a specialist.
Any idea or advice?
Fer
When you were on the 'operator stock ROM', was it rooted stock? My only idea is that it's possibly kernel related, ie unstable kernel. Try flashing full stock unrooted and see what happens? Else yes, probably hardware unfortunately

Is it a genuine samsung battery?
Swap it and see how it goes.
Also, going stock to see if the device behaves funny would be wise, as hopper is trying to tell you there.

Can you please keep me updated. My samsung is already on stock. I flashed it using ODIN, using the official carrier firmware and the problems actually started after flashing it. What ROM were you currently using?

This morning I reflashed to stock rom from my carrier, NO ROOT (stock kernel). So far I've had no problems. The phone runs smoothly and the battery life is okay. I have not experimented any of the problems like the ones listed above.
I'll keep informing along the week.
A factory reset + dalvik wipe combo would be wise.
Tho you need CWM or Mobile Odin to wipe dalvik.
PS: Root has got nothing to do with this.

excuse me, but root doesnt change the kernel to a kernel with custom recovery? I say this cuz now with stock kernel im not experimenting any issue, which I had with stock+siyah and rootbox ROM.
No, root gives you admin access to your device.
A custom kernel will give you CWM.
Of course the only way to keep it all stock with root is with Mobile Odin Pro EverRoot option, framaroot, ExynosAbuse and any one-click-root.

[Q] Phone turns off when taking a picture

This has been doing my head in for quite some time, sometimes when I take a picture and flash/focus and then shoot it turns my phone off, to the point I can't turn it back on and I have to battery pull.
I thought it was a ROM related issue (at the time I was on Ultima ROM 4.2) so just recently I've upgrades to 4.3.2 KitKat and it does exactly the same. It's not an app issue although it does it far less in MX Camera then stock camera.
Does anybody know why? it's driving me crazy
UrbanDesigns said:
I got this error in CWM after I tried flashing a KitKat ROM, I googled the error and found it's because my CWM is old and I need the updated version that's able to flash some KitKat ROMs but i wipe factory/data reset and when i reboot i just reboot into recovery
I figured i can just flash the .tar file from Odin and reboot into the new recovery and then flash the ROM but the .tar is nowhere to be found and i'm pretty out of practise with all the flashing ROMs business, I don't know what my alternatives are. I'm updating from 4.1.2 and that's only because the bug on this app is doing my head in (turns phone off sometimes when flash focus taking a picture, got to battery pull)

Yeah that's happening to me too, I'm on Imperium rom v31.0 (based on stock Samsung 4.3) with Boeffla 5.3 kernel.
I'll try figure out what's going on, it might be the battery getting old. If you can, try a newer battery.
EDIT: Problem seems to be fixed for me, setting max CPU clock to 1600mhz and GPU to 266/350/440/533/600 overvolting to +25mV through Boeffla-Config V2.

[Q] Clueless

ok folks got a problem here and i have searched and searched and tried and tried with no luck i have an at&t unlocked note i717 i have rooted it using the method stated here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223 i have installed a wide vairety of custom roms as wellas recoveries the phone constently reboots i have pulled the phone apart and cleaned the power button flashed different kernels etc no matter what i do it still reboots all the time. also the battery will have a full charge and once it autoreboots the battery shows it has being dead now the phone sticks in a boot loop i am by no means new to the android game i have even built my own rom many moons ago for the SGS II but this has me stumped any help and i would be greatful
P.S. the only way it does not give me these issues is to treat it as a brick and restore to stock gingerbread
How old is the actual battery? Is it bulging at all? Might want to try a fresh battery. The battery with a full charge but is dead after reboot is a sign of bad battery.

That is a given i have learned from past experience that wiping just once sometimes just is not good enough. strangely enough i returned the phone to stock unrooted. from there i install hybrid rom and did not have any issues the battery said it was a full charge the phone stayed on did not reboot untill today this afternoon i went and logged into facebook and the second it logged in bang there was the reboot. before that i made calls and went tot he play store etc etc with no hiccups this is really got me stumped
Wiping data and cache is not always good enough. You should also format your system partition. If not you will have system files from the previous ROM on your phone even though you do a full wipe.
Your issue may be with the way you are rooting your phone. Install your factory ROM using odin. Then use odin to flash CWM or TWRP recovery. Then flash a superuser version using recovery. The tutorial you spoke of mentioned kernels and you may be flashing a kernel for gingerbread on a JB ROM. This would definitely mess your phone up. Stay away from the kernels mentioned in this thread as the info is ANCIENT. After rooting (actually you don't even need to install superuser to flash a custom ROM) install your custom ROM. And only flash kernels recommended for that particular ROM.
Agoatamers words are always solid. I myself dont like to flash alternate kernals as they often seem to invite more maintainence. If it doesnt work with kernal built with, then I dont use.

I have been in this game for a while now and i have flashed more androids than i can count this phone is not the first note that I have flashed but it is the only one that i have seen this issue with as far as flashing kernels i did not use the kernels in that post untill i had returned to stock with GB then i used them the way you mentioned above is the way this phones was flashed several times I have tried many different roms without flashing kernels and then as last result tried a few defferent kernels as well to see if the kernel was an issue as i have had issues with kernels in the past on the SGS2 doing this with crappy kernels, although they were an easy fix flashing siyah pretty much fixed that issue. here is an update on the phone situation. i have been running hbrid rom for almost 24 hours with no reboot (fingers crossed, knock on wood ) the only thing i have done different I did switch batteries due to being out and my primary batt died and used my back up so i do believe it very well may have been the battery, the battery is not bulging as of yet but that does not mean anything as the battery could still be bad so we will see again fingers crossed i will kep this updated for at least 48 hours as long as there is no more problems i will mark this as solved via the battery replacement
