[Q] Device freezing and rebooting - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
For the past months I've been experiencing a lot of problems with my device: The device frozes or slow up with no apparent reason. It happens either when I'm in Whatsapp, or Facebook, or just listening music. It doesn't look to have any special app to behave like that. Locking and unlocking the screen becomes a pain and at some point after freezing it just turns off or reboot. Sometimes it just reboots even when I don't use it.
At the beginning I thought that the problems were related to the operator stock rom, then I jumped to Rootbox rom and nothing has changed. The phone keeps freezing and rebooting.
I've read that it might be related to a RAM issue, but I don't know if still have warranty so I'd like to check out everything else before taking it to a specialist.
Any idea or advice?
Fer

When you were on the 'operator stock ROM', was it rooted stock? My only idea is that it's possibly kernel related, ie unstable kernel. Try flashing full stock unrooted and see what happens? Else yes, probably hardware unfortunately

before anything. Thank you for your response.
I had experimented this problems with Siyah on stock and The kernel that comes with rootbox (different pone).
i've noticed that battery life has been also greatly reduced.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean... I'm asking if you've had this problem with stock ROM & stock kernel? No root / custom kernel.

I'm 95% sure your battery is about to die.
Is it a genuine samsung battery?
Swap it and see how it goes.
Also, going stock to see if the device behaves funny would be wise, as hopper is trying to tell you there.

My wife's phone has the exact same problem. However I had recently returned her phone back to stock jelly bean. I downloaded the original software from sammobile for her carrier (Bell) and didn't expect to have any problems. I think I may try to swap out the battery.

Yeah, it appears to be a genuine Samsung battery.
However, I'll jump back to stock toda y and see how it goes. If that doesnt work I'll get a new battery. Finaly, if that doesnt work I might start thinking on a new phone :'( .
Thanks again to everyone

Can you please keep me updated. My samsung is already on stock. I flashed it using ODIN, using the official carrier firmware and the problems actually started after flashing it. My wife said her keyboard freezes as well. Sometimes the Samsung logo appears and then the phone shuts off, or she is forced to shut it off herself.
What ROM were you currently using?

This morning I reflashed to stock rom from my carrier, NO ROOT (stock kernel). So far I've had no problems. The phone runs smoothly and the battery life is okay. I have not experimented any of the problems like the ones listed above.
I'll keep informing along the week.

A factory reset + dalvik wipe combo would be wise.
Tho you need CWM or Mobile Odin to wipe dalvik.
PS: Root has got nothing to do with this.

Sorry, the ROM I was using was Rootbox and the kernel before with stock rom was siyah.

excuse me, but root doesnt change the kernel to a kernel with custom recovery? I say this cuz now with stock kernel im not experimenting any issue, which I had with stock+siyah and rootbox ROM.

No, root gives you admin access to your device.
A custom kernel will give you CWM.
Of course the only way to keep it all stock with root is with Mobile Odin Pro EverRoot option, framaroot, ExynosAbuse and any one-click-root.

Xperia X10 keeps restarting

My xperia x10i which is runnning on the android 2.3.3. Keeps on restarting continously for around 10 times then it can fully function. I've even tried flashing it many times but the same issue still happens, so I believe it's very likely to be a hardware problem. Also If I use the mobile internet it restarts automatically, but If I use internet through wifi then the phone fully works and doesnt restart. I'm wondering what the problem is on this phone?

Yes I have even reflashed it but it still restarts
Man I have the EXACTLY same problem.
It´s really annoying issue, I have the same opinion as you, maybe it´s hardware problem. I guess this is related to heating.
Is your country in a hot season? hehe
so are you running on stock se firmware? maybe it has some kind of bug, try flashing another kernel, check in the development section to see how...
Just to further clarify, did you format /data and /cache before installing the 2.3.3 ROM ? Because this is a reported issue when migrating from one android version to another without clearing the data.

Useless post. Try to be nice to a coleague that is having a problem.
Another info I forget to mention, I´m not using any overclock, this problem happens either with custom or stock kernels. So I guess this is not kernel related.
a new kernel or updating android OS will clean ur phone
I think it mainly has to do with the improper discharge of the battery. Try changing the battery. Many people say it solved their problems.

What do you mean by clear all user data? I used the original SE firmware to flash It. Once I rooted my phone and then I flashed it to get rid of it.

Same problem here. Sometimes just out of the blue but mostly when downloading via 3G. I never had a spontaneous reboot while using WiFi.
This started after installing stock firmware 2.3.3
Have tried a couple of things now:
- Reinstall stock firmware 2.3.3
- Unlock bootloader and load custom firmware (DooMKernel v6). Tried the full OC version, medium OC version and currently run the fail safe version
- Install custom rom (FeraLab) which is Android 2.3.7
Damn thing still keeps rebooting. And I still have a year left on my current plan...

Oh ryt, I noticed this issue when I flashed it on android 2.3 and would keep on restarting like 15 times. So I downgraded the firmware to 2.1 and it just restarts on if mobile internet is used. I have sent my phone to a recycle company, they will pay £91. Hopefully if they don't find this minor fault. Anyway I'm getting the samsung galaxy S - I9000 as a replacement. Samsung phones never restart lol.
Come on guys, anyone please?
This is a very annoying problem. I did a research on google and it seems to be a known hardware bug.

[Q] Touchscreen Unresponsive

My SGS II is currently running on:
ROM: CheckROM RevoHD V4
Baseband: I9100XXKI4
Kernel: Dark Knight v2.5.2
Sometimes, the touch screen will no response to any touch. nothing happen no matter how hard i try to press the screen. but the buttons are all working fine.
the only way to get back to normal is i have to switch off the phone by taking out the battery, put it back and restart the phone. and i need to perform this a couple of time before the touch screen get back to normal.
any idea how to rectify this problem?
i already tried a different kernel but the problem still persist.
Sounds like you are having a SOD (Screen of death). Usually happens due to the CPU being overclocked or undervolted.
I would recommend checking with SetCPU or Voltage control apps if you are undervolted.
Another thing worth trying is to create a Nandroid backup of your ROM with CWM then trying to flash a different custom ROM (Hyperdroid, Villain or Foxhound Batista) to see if it persists.
You sometimes don't need to do a battery pull to reboot your phone. If you hold the power key for 10 seconds it will reboot from an SOD
PM me if you need any help
Go back to/reflash stock firmware & see if the problem persists. If it does, then it *might* be an issue with your screen/something else. If not, then it's clearly a rom/kernel issue.
Tq for your suggestion.
Before I flash a different ROM, how to reset the configuration of CPU?

What I meant was to ensure that the configuration is as per stock ROM.
Btw, I already flashed to the stock ROM, as suggested. Now, just wait and see.
Unfortunately, using the stock ROM, I lost the video feature of Google Talk. :-(

If you're running stock then you'll be unable to overclock/underclock, etc without root, so the CPU will run up to 1200mhz if that's what you mean ?
I've never used Google Talk (was one of the first things I froze when I rooted my phone), so I can't say how/why it doesn't work for you.
Re: whether you can reproduce the problems you were having with screen responsiveness, let us know after a day or so of running stock whether that issue has resolved itself. As mentioned previously, if not, then there's obviously something with your previous rom/kernel causing that. You could then ask the dev/users of either or both the rom or the kernel for advice about maybe fixing that problem when running same.

At first I was thinking of configuring the CPU as per stock ROM without flashing it.
But, on second thought, I think it's better to flash it to the stock ROM.
Unfortunately, I am not able to reproduce the error. So, need to monitor it for a few days.
Will update you on the outcome.
Thanks!

[Q] freezes on boot up

I just flashed "phone-bricker" ICS rom on my phone. I went to install the roms update, and when it restarted it froze on the first boot up screen.
I've tried to get to:
download mode
CWM
and normal restart
it always freezes on that screen
is there any way I can un-brick my phone?
Am i being trolled?

I just had the same problem with another ICS Rom. I ended up going to recovery and and wipe data/cache.
Pretty sure it's one of the apps that I downloaded since yesterday. Probably Antutu battery saver.
I appreciate all the hard work and sacrifice made by early adopters.
Anything that underclocks your device WILL cause it to crash - this is the case for all I9100 ICS kernels, stock or custom.
It almost surely applies to the I777 leak kernel too, since that build is an older codebase.

+1 Don't underclock I had my phone enter a sleep of death and then got really got while it was in my pocket. It then would freeze on boot until I wiped data.

How do you put a ROM on/restore an unrooted phone with a passcode?

I have an i777 (rooted, ROMd, etc) and my friend does also. She put a passcode on hers for some reason and apparently there was some type of software malfunction and she can't get her phone unlocked. So instead of making her wait weeks for Samsung to fix it, I volunteered to fix it myself.
I've already tried Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
Everything worked fine but, when the phone booted, the screen asking for the passcode was still present.
Does anyone know of another way to try this out? I promised her I'd have it done by tomorrow and that I'd also put ICS on it . And I really don't want to have to tell her I couldn't do it.
Thanks!
EDIT: I've solved this issue (thankfully)! I went into the stock Samsung recovery and chose to wipe data. It asked for a password and I kept entering random characters until it told me if I kept entering them it was going to wipe the phone's data. So it wiped the phones data and everything is now fine. I've rooted it using Entropy's tool from above and I am currently putting AOKP on it .

Oh really? my previous ROM was passcode protected,, I installed ICS over the weekend and it's never prompted me since then.passcodes seem to be flaky, sometimes mine would carry over from one ROM to another, other times it wouldn't.
Don't know exactly what causes it, I guess maybe try some different ROMs and just be sure to do a full wipe each time and cross your fingers that it disappears

See, I would wipe it, but when I go to wipe it (it doesn't have CWM, just the stock Samsung recovery), it asks for a password. I think I'm screwed .
Nevermind! I've got through the password by getting it wrong too many times. This caused the phone to wipe, and now I have exactly where I need it!
Able to push a kernel with CWM via adb? (sorry don't remember if USB debug is checked by default)
This is interesting.

[Q] Interesting Issue, Possibly bricked my SGH-I757M

I think I just bricked my phone, Interestingly enough I hold down the power button and the phone doesn't even power on. Absolutely nothing happens, I plug in the charger and no powered off charging Icon shows up either. The phone is just downright dead.
This is what occured moments before.
Booted into CWM 6.0.1.1
Performed Factory Reset/Wipe
Cleared Cache Partition
Cleared Dzavik Cache
Flashed Siyah-s2-v4.1.5-CWM
Flashed cm-9-20120909-UNOFFICIAL-celoxhd.zip TWICE
Flashed gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
All flashes were successful.
Phone was Rooted prior.
Rebooted, The phone turned off and since then I cannot get it to even power on or charge while off. Pulled Battery, nothing.
Any ideas?

Have you tried just going into download mode and then plug into the pc to see if it picks it up.... Also here is a link that they have the jig for G2*s just a thought. .http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/ This guy does really good work and I have seen some phones fixed with NO hope.
Problem determined.
eMMC Brick bug. It would seem that this bug effects the SGH-I757M (Bell Samsung Galaxy S2 HD LTE) as well as just the i9100's.
Before the full wipe, which kernel did you have? if not siyah or any other kernel which disables the super EMMC bug, then you hard bricked your phone.
However i remember there is a guide somewhere on how to recover a bricked phone

Oh I was not aware the Siyah Kernel did not support the SGH-I757M, are there any kernels that do? (non stock)
Spent some time on google. Seems there are no custom kernels that support the SGH-I757M. That is very dissapointing, as I really wanted to get the Siyah Kernel or at least any aftermarket kernel that improved on what we get stock.
PS. Bell Replaced my SGH-I757M Thankfully, albeit no amount of begging could convince them to upgrade me to the S3
