Alright, so I took the plunge and have this bad boy arriving to my doorstep tomorrow. I certainly plan to spend some time playing with this all night and downloading anything and everything. I just wanted to see what people found as really helpful apps that show off their tablet, and/or really helped boost the utility of the tablet.
I don't care whether the apps are games, tools, widgets, etc.
What are you addicted to on your tablet the most?
I know with my hobbled Evo 4G I'm excited to give Draw Something and TempleRun a go without it resetting my old Sense launcher every 10 minutes. But beyond that, I haven't really looked into any tablet specific apps.
And besides Play apps, are there any built in Sony specific add-ons that really surprised you more than you expected (IR, Qriocity, etc.)?
Favorites are;
Game- Reckless Racing 2
Widget- PWS( Wunderground Personal Weather Station)
App- Torque
I mainly use my tablet for reading, so my favorite apps are:
- Amazon Kindle, absolutely love it, its better than apple's iBook in every way
- Perfect Viewer, I think its one of the best manga viewers on Android

Sony Reader vs Kindle vs Nook vs Google Play Books
How do they shake out in your mind?
Didn't quite know how to best approach each one. Just read through The Hunger Games on the stock Sony Reader app. Was about to download the other apps for comparison.
PS I love reading on this baby though. Just feels good.
I haven't tried the Sony Reader app yet, I mainly use Nook and the Kindle app. I think the Kindle app is better designed and works better but it is easier to sideload epub books into the Nook app.
Nook: sideloaded epub files, free book giveaway every friday
Amazon: use it mostly to read ebooks checked out from libraries. Works great.

I haven't actually tried the Sony Reader, I have most of my library on Kindle already so I just went with Kindle.
Media:
-Sony's pre-loaded Remote Control app is great. I use it in the living room all the time and hardly touch my remotes anymore.
-Plasma Sound HD (Free) is a very fun music app that makes good use of the tablet screen size
-Adobe Photoshop Touch ($10) is a great portable substitute for the real Photoshop application. $10 seems a bit steep for an app, but you'll never need any other photo editing apps.
-Gmote 2.0 (Free) is a great app that allows you to browse for files on your computer and open them on your computer or on the tablet. It also has a touchpad mouse built in. Very handy if you have a PC hooked up in a living room.
-Amazon Kindle (Free) has been the smoothest e-reading experience for me, by miles. I'll second that Perfect Viewer (Free) is great for comics and manga.
Utility:
-If rooted, AdFree Android is a great adblocker that vastly improves browsing speed on the stock browser.
-ADWLauncher EX ($3.32) is the best alternative launcher I've found so far, though the recently released GO Launcher HD could give it a run for its money if they add more customization options.
-HD Widgets ($1.99) is my personal favorite for adding a digital clock, switches and weather status to your home screen.
-If you have a Wii, Wiimote Controller (Free) is a nice little app that allows you to sync your bluetooth Wii remote to your device. It's great for using with emulators.
Games:
-ChuChu Rocket
-Dead Space
-Draw Something
-Grand Theft Auto III
-Scramble with Friends (obscenely addictive)
-Shadowgun

Thanks for you
Apps:
>Documents to go -loading up a full word document with pictures is pretty snazzy
>File Manager HD - nice file browser for tablets
>MX video player, or double twist. Both good but I go MX.
>Winamp for music
>Volume+ FREE is nifty as - compresses all outputs so that they all stay in the upper range of loudness, and as such gives the effect of turn up the volume.
>My bank has an awesome net banking app for tablets also that is very intuitive, maybe yours might too
Games:
>(whoops just saw hogaburger posted this one allready) ShadowGun - a pretty impressive gears of war clone that looks and plays great on the sony tablet s. Also supports mapping controls to a ps3 controller/gamepad
GTA3> Plays and looks great, also natively supports the ps3 controller but I'm sure you could reconfigure the controls if needed.
>ZEN Pinball THD. It's simply amazing, if you like pinball I don't think you'll find a better app on the play store.
I also recommend getting Slide me marketplace installed (3rd party market). Then you can get some amazing emulators that used to be at premium price on the android market (and were/are the finest emulators around) for free . ie snesoid, nesoid, gbcoid, etc etc. The only one he seems to be charging for is N64oid. Pity cause I bought that back inthe day and now it's gone .
And the fun really starts if you decide to go ahead and root the tablet. Then all the games from gameloft become available to you if you edit your build.prop
Stock sony apps you say? Crash bandicoot is definately the best one . The rest suck in my opinion. Some would argue that the IR remotes awesome, I just find it tedious. Or that the sony music player sounds great, but I think the tablet itself sounds bad anyway so whats the difference really. Plus you gotta jump through hoops to get your SD card music to show up in it. (need root).
Oh. I do like the stock launcher and keyboard. If you don't mess with them too much, they work pretty good.

It's really cool that GTA 3 supports a controller input! I'll have to check that out now.
And that the Slide me marketplace sounds really nifty. I guess I'll have to get that micro to mini USB dongle thing to plug in a gamepad and really unlock the emulator abilities of the tablet!
I HATE how little Sony's PSN games offer. With everything they've collected from me, I refuse to buy MediEvil and such twice. My account info should all be able to transfer over and unlock that.
Thank you all for this great list. My Tablet S should be here tomorrow, I hate that I will be at various appointments all day before I could get my hands on it.
I'm a little disappointed it does not interact more with the PS3, but I have my fingers cross that with the ICS update this matter will be address.
I'm still on the fence on if I should root or not.
Got my Sony tablet S, and after playing with it for about 5 hours last night, this thing is great! This is my first tablet so really nothing to compare it to.
My wife which has a Kindle keyboard is loving this tablet, she loves the bigger screen, the fact that she can read in the dark without a desk lamp, and most of all the shape.
So now i'm in the market for a second tablet as soon as may 1st, I will wait and see if Google comes with something like the rumors says, or maybe one of the new samsung, or the prime.
Thanks again for the list.

+1 for that
Sony isn't really doing his best I mean which PSone games do you have other then the silly ones available right now
These games I would like to see in the PS store:
1. Command and Conquer
2. C&C Red Alert 1
3. A Bugs Life
4. Ape Escape
5. Tomb Raider
6. Rayman
These games are already much more "Liked" then the simple games on ps store and still, Nothing more then just a couple of dumb old games..
And they need a controller or it is not playable except rayman.
Example: Fpse doesn't support ps3 Controller
Fancy widgets for a very nice HTC style clock and weather
for me,
Best Apps:
iTap Mobile RDP - a fantastic remote desktop app which uses requires no 3rd Party App to be installed on the pc. I use it at home and at work, and has gesture recognition.
Price: About $12
Mindjet - formally 'Thinking Space Pro', a paid for app, this is now owned by MindJet (who I think make enterprise level versions of the software) as a free app. Makes a great tool for at work.
Price: free
Best Games:
Sim City - Surprisingly good graphics and gameplay, though takes a little getting used to the controls.
Price: Can't remember, but about $4 iirc
Train Crisis HD - just a fun puzzle type game
Price: Approx $1
(sorry, wouldn't let me post links)

Sup ppls,
Remember when the Flyer/View was supposed to have a cool online gaming service, and all we got was an app to view it... Well till 2days ago that's all we had a boring app to view a gaming site, now we have been blessed with the actual gaming app from Onlive... about time. Several smartphones including the EVO3D have been blessed with the ability to play online.
If your looking for more gaming then this is the app to peep out, with more than hundreds of known game titles from Xbox, PS, and Nintendo games plus more for than a hand full to endulge in. The app is free, several free games, free trials (30mins) and purchasing games from 1$ up 59$.. when you purchase a game you'll be able to play it on compatible smartphones, your pc/mac, and tablets via WiFi or internet access.
I played a game or 2, great graphics clear and functionality was smooth.. it does stream nicely over WiFi and not bad over 3G (Sprint View). So go get the app for free in the market, link below with screenshots. You can also invite friends to have multiplayer abilities, so sign up and feel free to add me.. my username? Godzson of course "Game On"

Thanks for the heads up... very cool
FYI not all of the games are touch enabled. Be careful if you are touch (mobile) gaming only. They do have a universal wireless controller but that kind of defeats the point of mobile gaming to me.
I realize this is nothing new, but with many of the emulators being pulled from the market, and the somewhat confusing process of getting everything in place, I thought I would post a little guide here on how to get some old school console gaming on our Photons, for people who may not have realized it was possible.
I also would ask that no one flame on about YongZh. Whatever your opinion is of him, his N64 emulator is bar none the best on Android.
Now, with that out of the way, the MoPho is a seriously capable gaming machine for those of you who grew up in the 80's and 90's. Because of the support for bluetooth that Motorola has in their phones, you can interface with the phone with several devices, some of which you may already have. With it's fast processing power, and a solid GPU, it runs emulators smoothly, and with HDMI, you can connect right to your TV. I have tried similar set-ups with the Evo, and the Evo3D, and neither one compared to what I am enjoying with my MoPho.
To start, you will want download some of the best emulators. You need to create a SlideMe account to buy N64oid. You can do that here: http://slideme.org/application/n64oid
SlideMe is safe to give your credit card information. Plus once you have an account, you can download several other emulators for free, like SNES, Gamboy Advanced, etc. For PSX, it's available in the Android market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.emulator.fpse&hl=en
The best SNES app is no longer available in the market. It was Snes9xEX from Robert Broglia. You can still find it here: http://www.explusalpha.com/home/snes9x-ex/downloads
There is an initial investment here of about $10 for the newer consoles (N64 and PSX), but it's worth it if you have the cash. These developers continue to work hard on these emulators, and $5 is a steal for the experience you get.
Second, you will want to download the BluezIME that supports a Wii Controller. Found here: http://code.google.com/p/android-bluez-ime/downloads/list
There are other Wii Mote apps, but this is the only one that works natively with the N64 emulator.
This app will allow you to pair a number of controllers with your device, and it supports true analog movement with the Wii controller analog stick. For those that don't know, analog allows you to control the movement of your player based on how far you bend the stick. Digital is 100% or 0% with a trigger somewhere about half way. Analog lets you push the stick a little, and move a little, push the stick alot, and move alot faster. I hope that makes sense. N64 is really the only console from this era that used it actively. PSX had a few games that did take advantage of it.
Once you have N64oid installed, as well as BluezIME, you can go into N64oid, and connect a Wii controller directly there. Just go into menu>settings>input settings>bluetooth gamepads>controller 1.
Once you are in there, you can hit connect, and it will ask to turn on bluetooth if you haven't already done so. Once it is on, it will say connecting. At this point, hit 1 and 2 on the Wii controller to pair it. The buttons automatically map, but you can change them if you want to. The analog stick should not be mapped in this section. It's already mapped correctly. If you are using the nunchuck, it's mapped to that analog stick. If you are using the classic controller, it's mapped to the left stick.
If you have multiple remotes, you can pair them all up using the other controller slots. N64 had a lot of great 4 player first person shooters. The wonderful advantage to having the MoPho is out of the box mirroring on to your HDTV. Because mirroring uses far less resources than webtop, make sure you just do mirroring, not webtop. It will ensure your emulator runs more smoothly.
Pairing with FPSE is a little different. It doesn't support BluezIME right in the app. So you have to pair with Bluez before going into FPSE. The upside to the N64oid emulator is you don't have to change your input method. So if you pause your game to answer a text, you type with your regular keyboard. In FPSE, Bluez is now your input method and you are mapping to actual keystrokes. Which means you will have to change your system input method if you need to type something, and change back when you re-start your game.
There is another option for a controller, which is the Sixaxis controller app. I don't have that controller, and so I haven't bought or tested that app. If anyone has, feel free to post your feedback here.
The other thing these emulators have is on screen controls, or hardware contols that use the sensor to move or physical buttons to shoot, jump, etc. Again, the MoPho has an advantage here over other phones. The camera button, and the volume up button can be mapped as triggers, and they are placed nicely. Also, because the MoPho has a gyroscope instead of an accelerometer, using the sensor as an analog stick is much more accurate than it was on my OG Evo. You can also map the camera and back buttons if you so choose.
Once you have installed your emulators, you need to get games to play. I have to tread lightly here, because downloading game roms from someone else is illegal. If you already own the game, and make a back up of it, it's legal to play your own copy of your own game with these emulators. You can use Google to find roms to see an example of what your backup will look like. PSX roms are the most difficult to get a solid working copy. This is because they are very large to begin with, and need to be "un-cem'ed" usually. I can tell you there is a good youtube video if you search on how to get PSX roms for your android device. If me saying that violates something, let me know and I will take it out. For FPSE, you will need to install the PSX bios. Again, this is easily downloaded by doing a Google search. If you can't find it, PM me, and I will send it to you.
FPSE is a somewhat complex emulator with a lot of options. For more support related specifically to that system, go to their support forums at:http://www.fpsece.net/forum2/index.php?sid=0fe4c20b809864ad49553f31ba1e9d1a
For N64oid, you can view the discussion here: http://n64oid.forumotion.com
If you have made it this far, here is a list of some games that are fun to play if you re-map the controls. Most of these are games that used the gun, because it can be emulated with a screen tap.
NES
Duck Hunt - Use input method as zapper. Map volume up as select, and volume down as start to navigate initial menus.
SNES
Yoshi Safari - This was a game that used the superscope. So you have to set the superscope as your main controller. If you map the volume up as the up button, and the volume down as the down button, and use sensor as left and right, then you are actually playing it in 2 player mode. The second player controls Yoshi, while the first is Mario shooting. But if you hold your phone in portrait, you can tilt left to right to dodge enemies, and press up to jump on the platforms, and down to slow down and evade obstacles. These instructions should work with SNESoid or Snes9x EX.
Mario Paint - This only works with Snes9x EX. The developer allows you to emulate the mouse.
Mario Kart - Use sensor as left and right, and map Volume up as A, Camera as R. Leave the on screen controls for acceleration. You accelerate by pressing B on screen, steer with the phone, but hop to do power slides with Camera, and fire your weapons with volume up.
PSX
Time Crisis - Change the controller to Guncon, and map L3 to volume up, and R3 to volume down. L3 will come out of cover to shoot, then you can tap on the enemies, and R3 will pause the game.
N64
Star Fox - Use the sensor as your analog stick, map volume up to Z, and camera to R. Map Volume down to C-left (use for boost). Leave the on-screen controls except for the analog stick and L and R. Flying the ship is done mostly from the phone controls, and firing is on-screen controls.
The compatibility lists in the forums for N64oid and FPSE aren't really specific to our phones. I have found excellent compatibility with most games on this phone. FPSE runs almost everything 100%. For N64 here are all the ones I have currently running with no issues that I can see, but I am sure that more are compatible, and the developer is improving this app regularly.
Super Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Star Fox 64
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Banjo Kazooie
Zelda OOT
Zelda Majoras Mask
I hope that helps some of you enjoy your Photon that much more. If I missed anything or you want to add anything, just let me know.

Nice! Can't wait to try this out.
Yongzh is the freaking man. Google pulled his emulators I believe because of violations etc. Emulators don't last that long in the market. Ex, apple got a mame emulator and it was pulled in 2 days. I don't need to explain why they were pulled its pretty obvious lol. Also if you go to Google and search for "slideme market" yongzh gives his emulators free with updates. All of the emus are the latest versions. I'm not 100% on the story with yongzh and Google but the dude puts out qualify work. Not to mention the photon is the best devices I've ever emulated older systems/games on. Great write up.
Update: It appears slideme marketplace is down at the moment but I'm guessing it will be back soon? Here's a dropbox link to slide me i hope it's back up soon...

I totally agree. My Evo was my first Android phone, and when I saw that there were SNES emulators, I was hooked. Yongzh replies to emails too, which is great. The Robert Broglia is also a really cool developer. If you want to venture into mame, and other systems like that, his emus are pretty legit.

One of my biggest complaints about FPSE would be that the sound never seems to work correctly. I would suggest unchecking the framelimiter, and see if that makes it work. Some games ran too fast with that unchecked.
I was looking into this today. This is a great start for a guide. This is what I found. Looks like this article is about 8 months old but, should help with a few things to look for. http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Android/Top+10+Android+charts/feature.asp?c=29415

Nice write-up. I'm running Snes9x and Gameboid on my Electrify (Photon minus 4G) and they run great, but with on-screen controls, fast-action games like Mario are just unplayable. I beat both real Castlevania games for the GBA (I don't count Circle of the Moon, they made that for people who thought the other two and SOTN were too easy) on my Electrify, and Zelda 3 is kinda playable (SNES or the Capcom reissue on GBA). A Sixaxis controller is a little too expensive. I didn't think about the Wii classic controller.
Eek. Looks like the Wii option costs more than I thought. First you have to buy a Wiimote, and the black one with MotionPlus is $2.69 cheaper than the white and blue ones, and $4.69 cheaper than the pink one (girl gamers always get shaft...eh, scr... eh, cheated), but if you want to go black on black, Newegg needs $2 more to ship the black classic controller than the white one (both $19.99 with $4.99 and $2.99 shipping, respectively, and $35.30 and free shipping for the black Wiimote). So we're looking at $60 for the Nintendo option.
Meanwhile, Newegg wants $39.99 for the PS3 controllers in blue or black. If you want white or red, the price goes up to $44.99. But if you want pink (again, girls get... eh, you get the idea), the price jumps up to $54.99. All with free shipping. (Does the pink... eh, sorry, "Candy pink"... one support breast cancer research? No? Sony's just being misogynistic?)
Hmm... looks like Sony wins this one, by about $20. (Note that none of those are referral links, I'm not getting kickbacks or anything.)
Since I originally wrote this I bought a PS3 controller, and the sixaxis app is nothing short of amazing! The touch profiles make it so you can use N64oid with full analog control. But, what's more, is you can play games like Shadowgun and map the controls to key presses, or Modern Combat 3 with mapping on screen touch profiles.
If anyone is interested in these mappings or profiles, I can upload them here.
Yes please upload the n64oid profile
Hello,
I am a gamer, and I am quite new to tablets.. and one of things that is bothering me - is there a possibility to use tablet as "remote touch screen".
I mean - lets say we start some game on PC - let the high-end pc hardware do all the rendering and stuff AND then compress it a bit in real-time AND stream it to tablet over WiFi -> so basically you have any PC app "running" on tablet...
(add to that some control conversion from touch to pc mouse-clicks - and most titles should be playable not-so-bad level)
Is something like this possible? Or maybe tegra3 is still not powerful enough to handle that? (or maybe its impossible to real-time compress 720p video to size that would go easy over wifi (20-30 mbit/s ?) ? - if I remember 720p video is present in some skype but I do not know how lag-free it is...)
Just wondering...
Thanks for answers.
Yes. Two things to look into. First, plain old VNC (google it), which has been around forever. The best android VNC client I've used so far is TeamView. Others may have other favorites.
Second, there is a service called OnLive strictly for remotely streaming games to various devices. They have (recently, I believe) released an android client.
Splashtop HD is the best for what you looking for. its built into the Prime. its in the Mycloud app. OnLive is a gaming server client on its own. you choose PC/console games they have on their server. which is alot. you can't set up your own thing with Oblige. Onlive is everything within itself. the streaming game play is great and virtually no lag. play games like PC Nvidia version of Batman Arkham city, Homefront, Metro 2033, Aliens vs. Predator FPS, New Quake, Darksiders, Street Fighter 4 n tons more.

Does anyone that's used both have any thoughts on how Splashtop HD compares to Teamviewer? Is it worth the price tag (Teamviewer being free)?
TV is dead simple to use, but it would never confuse it with using my PC directly. If there is something faster and smoother I'm all for switching...

I don't have my prime in hand to check, but I believe it comes with Splashtop.
Edit: demandarin explained above...

It does, as demandarin already explained above.

You might also want to look into OnLive. They recently released an Android app for their game streaming service. Some games are modified to allow for touch screen control. You can use a game pad as well...
http://www.onlive.com/
Oops... OnLive already mentioned...ah well, I second the suggestion then!
Prime comes with splashtop installed, but if your looking to play games that are streamed off of a PC you want OnLive.
The Prime can handle the streaming part just fine. Splashtop has had the best results for me (best frame rate and picture quality).
There are three major issues you should know about though with Splashtop and your application assuming you are using either the dock or an external mouse and keyboard.
1st - You cannot play the games on you PC in full screen. I'm not sure if it is the same in all remote desktop programs, but there is apparently a difference in the way windows and directx handle the graphics when you have either windowed or full screen. Splashtop can't capture full screen and therefore can only play games in windowed mode.
2nd - Android does not have a right click. Even if you hook up a mouse, right click will be mapped to the back button. This sucks for games in a big way. Some of the RDP software I've seen have a trick for this to get right click, but I haven't had luck gaming with those.
3rd - Splashtop does not mouse track. What this means is that even though you see your mouse cursor moving around on you tablet screen (assuming you are using an external mouse), Splashtop only registers its location when you click on something. The effect is that games like first person shooters won't work properly since you can't look around with the mouse like you normally would. Again, other RPD software out there has this ability, but like before, they didn't work well for games for me.
I would love for this thing to work for playing PC games remotely, but at the moment it just isn't quite there. Splashtop updates frequently, so maybe in the near future they will implement things to fix the last two issues.
for me it's pretty much only perfect viewer for comics and manga, moon+ reader for e-books and the stock music player for when i'm reading.
tapatalk to read the forum!

Are you able to consistently do special moves in street fighter? That ha-du-ken is no joke with touch screen controls.
I haven't used it a ton yet (other than installing cwm and setting it up), but I put some movies and there and plan to play some games as well. Found a cool game called Galaxy Wars Tower Defense that's been pretty addicting lol.

since you read comics on your tf300t i recommend using gmd gesture control to hide the taskbar when you read.
Thanks for the tip atomicblue. ComicRack actually hides the task-bar when reading. My tablet is used 90% for reading comics and the rest for surfing.
- gReader (tried feedly, flipboard, etc..... and I just don't like them. Would love someone to make just a better visual interface FOR the greader app itself)
- elecont weather (most amazing weather app ever for tablets - check "large screen" settings box)
- another world game.
- evernote
- 500px for gorgeous photos
- ted talks video apps for inspirational videos
- gvoice for texting
- browser for everything else

I just recieved my TF300 yesterday and I love it!
For streaming 1080p x264 mkv I use ES File Explorer + BS Player Lite, and it works great, some 1080p movies tend to lag a bit, but that's because of the network speed, not the tablet itself.
Tapatalk for forum chatter!
Mupen64 Plus AE (much better than N64oid) for playing N64 games.
Snes9x EX (better than Snesoid) for playing Snes games.
This combined with Wiimotecontrol to sync my Wiimote+classic controller.
Imdb works great as well, optimized for tablets and it looks gorgeous!
Swiftkey X for tablets (works great)
Apex Launcher (soooo smooth and tons of features)
Google Music (also tablet optimized and looks great)
Quickpic as mentioned before (although it tends to lag when scrolling through pictures)
Teamviewer to control my own and my family's computers
Forum Runner gets a lot of use on mine

For the 64 and SNES apps do they have button mapping, and are they free?

If you connect the wiimote with that app you can plug in either a classic controller or a nun-chuck attachment into the wiimote and they will both work!
