[Q] Can you s-off after using htcdev Method to root - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I have been working with my buddies thunderbolt. He didn't want a data wipe, so we used the htcdev method to root 2.11.605.9, and flash CMW 4.0.1.5. Now I can not find a rom that will flash with out giving it a WIFI-error, I assume its because the kernel isn't flashed properly. I either need a method to flash the rom/kernel so the WIFI-error doesn't show, or s-off and flash regularly.
1.link is s-off tool, will it work for unlocked using htcdev method?
My phone is also rooted with the htcdev method and i just use Flash Image Gui to flash kernels with s-on.
http://www.myhtc.biz/2012/htc-thunderbolt-rooting-s-off-sim-unlock-htc-sense-guide/

Can't say for sure if it will work or not. The recommended method for S-OFF however is at revolutionary (dot) io
I'd recommended giving that a try first as it will error out before it has a chance to break something. Be sure to read the documentation carefully before beginning.

I was finally able to get my 605.9 TB in an S-OFF configuration with the procedure I followed from Thunderbolt Forums (search Downgrade get s off now unneccessary):
I just got HBOOT to show S-OFF with this method and it replaces the "Unlock" header from HTCDev to "Revolutionary" once the procedure is completed.
All props go to OP in ThunderboltForums in above link. Next to flash a couple of ROMs and see if it really did work.

S-Off unlock bootloader

Is there a command to unlock the bootloader with s-off without having to wipe all of my data and everything?
There is no need to unlock. S-off is all that you need. It can do anything.

It actually would not let me flash recovery without having the bootloader unlocked again. It was disappointing and erased my data... grrr

You need root to get s-off. The only people who had root were people on the shipped rom when the phone came out. Every OTA since has not had root, let alone temp root that the shipped rom had. So you absolutely need HTC Dev unlock to get s-off, and yes if you havent done it yet, it will wipe the phone. Thems the breaks.

Not what I meant. I already had s-off and it relocked. It then would not allow me to install amon ra. I was asking if there was a different fastboot command to just change it to unlock now since we have soff.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
I had to unlock too but reused my token.
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code. is the command
Edit: My bad this probably isn't what you were looking for.
I didn't have to re-unlock.
I asked about this in the discussion thread but was never answered.
I just fastboot flash recovery .zip
and HBOOT flashed my roms boot.img and I was back with the addition of S-OFF
I've flashed several Roms since, while my HBOOT still says Tampered, Locked, S-OFF.
Finally, since I'm on ICS, I flashed the Juopunutbear modified HBOOT.
Everything seems to be open and working fine without re-unlocking.

Not sure if you still need this but i just used the rezound AIO to flash amon again right after and worked fine no unlock. Tho I still have my bin file if I need it.
afaik if you did s-off and you're on GB firmware, you need the ENG Hboot to flash recoveries using fastboot commands, otherwise you have to use PH98IMG.zip's... but that's just what i see, i'm not 100%.

Root

So I see there's a way to unlock the bootloader via HTC, is there anything there way besides that? For example revolutionary. Link would be helpful too since I'm on mobile. Thanks I'm advance!

nope, no other way yet.
Read around.
Only two ways to unlock bootloader.
By HTC or S-OFF by Juponutbear.
Either way, you have to do HTC's unlock before you can do the S-OFF procedure.
There's no revolutionary-ish method I'm aware of, root comes easily through ROMs, flashing a SU.zip, or adding superuser through Amon Ra.

You must do HTC unlock first.
This unlocks the bootloader and allows you to root.
Then you must root, and the only method of doing that that I'm currently aware of is to use Amon Ra to root the phone.
Then you can get S-OFF via the Juopunutbear method.

Hey OP, there are root methods for the stock firmware, the 1.02.605.6 that comes with the phone new.
If you have not gone to the OTA firmware yet, 2.01.605.11, you can use those root methods.
Someone else feel free to tell me to go back to sleep, if I need it, too
Edit 3: Removing my tinfoil hat and going back to sleep for now, sorry.

If you are updated to the OTA firmware, you can only accomplish root by Unlocking the bootloader first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415615
This guide details the process succinctly and is what I used, however:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504824
If you download the All-In-One toolkit and follow the guide it can simplify the process greatly. Perm Root option is in the Extras section for you after Unlock, and AmonRa recovery is recommended. Some ClockworkMod users have some nasty trouble charging battery when it becomes fully drained.

Yeah, I had to dust out the cobwebs of my brain after successfully S-OFF'ing this morning. Wish I would have seen this thread first because I had forgotten what to do! All I did was fastboot flash the recovery via adb and then flash the zip from twrp. I had to use Ubuntu though because I can't find Windows 8 64bit drivers that work

I received my EvoLTE two days ago and immediately Rooted using HTCDev and the TWRP recovery. I wrongly believed this would give me S-Off and obviously I was wrong about that. So...I need to learn how to get S-Off after Rooting. From reading on the forum it seems I have to do the S-Off procedure and then go through the Rooting process again.
Question: I'm Rooted presently, can I follow the S-Off procedure while Rooted? Will this un-Root me? I don't know if I have to un-Root first, then do the S-Off steps, then Root again, or if I can just do S-Off which will un-Root me then Root again.
I haven't found a clear answer yet and appreciate any and all help.
thanks,
DC

Yes u can follow the instructions to gain soff (make sure you choose the right method for your h-boot) then you will have to regain root access by method of your choice but if you are new I'd recommend using regaw's automatic rooter and skip the htc unlock step (because after s-offing you will already be unlocked)

Awesome this pretty much answered my question of the next step after getting s-off from dirtyracun. They are so concerned with only s-off in their thread that they don't even point anyone in the right direction afterwards. I am sure their method is 99% safe and so on, but it woulda been nice to see some guidance on the next step (ie regaining root, loading recovery, loading custom rom, etc)
EDIT: Successfully Got S-off via racun, running win 7 32 bit, evo 4g lte, flashed recovery & SU as listed by TC successfully. Phone is NOT a brick.
Glad to be of help! Now the phone is really "yours" to enjoy

Not perm root. You have to flash a custom recovery to flash the root package. I believe you can temp root however.

Unlock bootloader is for flashing roms and kernels, without significant changes to the phone itself, s off gives you full acces to the phone, soffed you can flash radios bootimages bootloaders, and manipulate everything, also meaning a risk of completely bricking

ok - just wanted to make sure i was following correctly.
s-off is a step past simply unlocking the bootloader. doing either will allow you to flash roms / kernels / custom recovery? s-off will also make it a bit easier to brick your phone if you don't follow directions.
i rooted my original inc... s-off seemed to be the way to go on that phone which i did with no problems... maybe that made me braver than i should be
S-off is the way to go. Just stick with ROMs/kernels/radios for this phone. Flashing files for other phones will usually brick your phone.

[ROOT] HTC EVO 3D Root Toolkit

Hi guys.
I have recently developed a simple HTC Evo 3D Root Toolkit. This toolkit is very simple and easy to use, just follow onscreen instructions and in few clicks root your device. After rooting process you will get Unlocked Bootloader (S-OFF),Custom recovery (you can chose within cwm, cwm touch and twrp), Root access(SuperSU or Superuser app). I update this app very soon and if you see some bugs and things like that please send me a message. App is tested and you must accept the Disclaimer window. The website for this app will arrive very soon. I hope that this app will be very useful for you and if you like it click thanks button and spread the word about this project.

I am not responsible for any damage to your device and bricking it...
...I've been trading PMs with ShadowGaba and this toolkit is quite worth it, actually.
For an unlock no0b such as myself, I was initially cowardly. In the end, after about 12 hours of trial-and-error, it's still absolutely worth it.
Although not entirely clear, SGs toolkit did a successful job of unlocking, installing a recovery, and installing a superuser.
Some of the steps almost felt superfluous, but SG's right; for the most part, follow the directions and you'll unlock successfully.
The only snag for me was having to switch to 4ext recovery (the toolkit offers only twrp and clockworkmod; it'd be nice if 4ext was one of the choices) in order to smartflash a ROM; only because I'm still on 1.58 hboot and S-on, post-unlocking. (Many ROMS just don't flash properly because of the 1.58 hboot and S-on; besides, many posts recommended 4ext recovery in smartflash mode to properly load ROMs, anyhow.)
Although I won't be enjoying any JB ROMs until I wire-trick my way to S-off and/or downgrade my hboot, I am currently enjoying Nega-Lite's Blu-Rom 2.95.651.5 immensely, without fail.
The battery-life and the smoothness are incredibly slick and worth it to flash to from my God-awful, battery-draining, store-bought VM JB OS.
I personally think I'm resourceful enough to get through any snags in the toolkit process, but ShadowGaba was well on-hand and curious to know if I unlocked successfully.
To the fearful, I'm sure SG would help out if you're stuck.
If you're questioning whether or not to unlock, I say go for it; so many delicious ROMs for your HTC EVO 3D await your discovery.
Cheers, ShadowGaba.

Okay meatfest. To get S-OFF you must downgrade hboot to 1.49 and use revolutionary to gain S-OFF.
I will explain why your bootloader says Unlocked and S-ON. HTC has modified new devices HBOOT-s, in other words , they have prohibited flashing custom kernels and some roms to your and mine device. So you have couple solutions:
1.Downgrade HBOOT and gain Revolutionary S-OFF
2.Use HTC Dumlock
3.Flash 4ext recovery
4.Boot into recovery using fastboot and flash ...

I ran into the same issue with mine. The issue in my case it was the adb files needed to generate the code to unlock it per the HTC unlock method. The adb files I used (as I am sure you did the same) was part of some package that included it. So I decided to just download the adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20131030 and executed the CMD prompt from adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20131030\sdk\platform-tools. Then I followed the HTC Unlock instructions and it worked.
