Leaving bluetooth on but not using it.. - HTC EVO 3D

So if my bluetooth is on and it's not paired to anything, will it drain battery?
I like the convenience of not having to pull my phone out of my pocket when I enter my car. The phone pairs up to the stereo automatically but I'm wondering how much strain it's putting on the battery the rest of the time when it's "on" but not connected to anything.
Now that i think about it, it is probably periodically polling to see what other devices it can see....since it would have to be doing that to "know" that it's now in the car and can connect but how battery heavy is that?

Yes, leaving it on, but not being used will drain the battery.

How much drainage are we talking about here? I guess I should just do a real world comparison and see what the dent is

I can't tell you exactly.
Do a full charge, turn on Bluetooth, unplug charger, and check your battery stats at the end of the day. That much drainage.
Let me know if that helped.
EDIT: There will be a percentage for the Bluetooth.

good call, i'll try that tomorrow.

Hardly any, I've had mine on since release day and haven't noticed much battery drain. Usually streaming Pandora is what drains it for me.

Alright check it out. I've been studying all day so the phone got minimal use today but doesn't look like the battery drains with the bluetooth on that much. I've been running 15 hours now and it's on 71% battery left. Screenshots beloww

good to know, thanks for the report

Yes that's a process that is running in the background and it will have a afect on the battery drain

Cheers mate, :good:
Thanks for doing that now I can confidently leave my Bluetooth on all day, so like you I can just jump in the car and be off with the beats pumping

Best Way to Drain Battery Fast, and Completley?

I understand that Battery Status has a drain meter, but what is the fastest way to completley drain your battery. I have Bluetooth/Wifi running, with the screen always on, and at it's brightest level. It's just not happening as fast as I would like.
try doing a lot of data transfer...via the internet, if you have free internet, or via bluetooth, since you have blutetooth running. also try playing some music files...or use your phone to talk...talk time on the phone is about 4 hours or so...while standby is considerable longer (2-3 days?).
make alot of calls
Lol. This is an easy one. Just turn on all your connections (WiFi, Bluetooth, GSM). Turn screen to full brightness. Then, run your camera. If you really want to drain ur battery, install WebCamera Plus, and stream the camera video over WiFi with your screen on max brightness with the processor overclocked to 260 mhz or so. This will drain ur battery really quick.
Or if your looking for a quick and dirty way, short it out. with a wire and a resystor connect + to -.
one difficulty in draining completely is that when you get to 10%, you'll get a bunch of notifications on low battery and at 5% your phone will constantly turn off by itself to "preserve data." how to drain the last 5%, not sure. there might be some sort of option to turn that off, but you might have to hunt around for that part...
DON'T hook any kind of resister to your battery. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, you can cause serious damage to it.
You can turn off all notification nags in the power section, and then follow the general instructions for running everything at once. I drained mine in a little less than an hour that way.
Okay and now the big question. What do you want to do that for? What's the general idea behind it?
with a lithium ion battery, there is no memory. therefore, no need to EVER run it completely dead. lithium ion batteries have a certain # of full to dead cycles. the best way to ensure that your battery will last a long time is to try to keep it as close to full as possible.

I was just going to post this, I am surprised nobody said it sooner!
Seriously, do not drain a lithium cell, keep it topped up where possible, you don't need to drain it before a charge.
Anyone that says you do is misinformed.
i thought so too
i thought so too, but the instruction of the xda flame stated that you should drain it completely and avoid charging short time/intermittently. now, i am confused.

Why did you replied to a 10 year old thread?
Heck, what am I doing?
Camera uses more battery than playing a movie?
Anyway what I do:
Max brightness, plug in high impedance headphones (LG V30+ that uses quad-dac and higher than average powered amp), full-screen Netflix movie, turn on all wireless radios.

battery draining while using GPS.

I just went on a trip and about 2 or so hours into the trip my cell phone went dead even though it was plugged in. I was using my GPS. I recharged my phone and tried again and I could see the battery was draining even though it was plugged in.
Is there a fix for this problem? I'm was using Sprint ROM, but switched to Might Mikes, but still have the same problem.
what ends up happening with the pda devices is that it looks to the battery for energy only. even if it's plugged in if you drain the battery faster than it can charge then it will go dead. i don't know if there is even a different rom that can cercumvent that, but that would be the only way to fix it.
...or if you could find a gps program that uses less energy. that should work too.
I tried again using the GPS, but this time I had a DC to AC converter and plugged in my phone. Although I didn't run the GPS that long, maybe a half hour or so, the phone battery didn't loose any noticeable charge. It was fully charged when I stopped the GPS.
I'm also looking to replace my battery with a higher capacity battery. Can anyone make a recommendation? I don't want a larger battery as far as size, but one that has more capacity. Let me know if there is a battery on the market that will meet my requirements.
Touch Pro has a safety feature to stop charging when the temperature sensor goes past a certain point. It is much more likely to reach that point when you are running GPS and in car with the sun beating down.
Workaround for that is to turn on the AC.
I had the same issue this May when driving through GA while on vacation.
The phone does stop the charging process when it feels it is too hot but will continue to operate thus discharging the battery quickly but never letting you get a charge in.
My solution was to buy a mount for the phone that clipped onto the AC vent and let cool air run on it the entire time and that solved the problem.
Hope that helps.
Yes, anytime I run the GPS the phone does get warm. However, I do have a vent mount holder for the phone with AC blowing right on the back of it. That doesn't resolve my problem.
I'm interested in a very high capacity battery if anyone can personally recommend one.
Have only had my sprint pro for 2 weeks and concur the battery life is bad. I find heating problems during lots of tasks and sometimes doing seemingly nothing(in sleep mode). I found that my gps was draining the battery even when not in use. I installed a cab to toggle it and that has helped alot. My data is set to go off automatically after a short time also. I'm trying every tweak I can think of and googling for more.
The oem batt was 1340mAh, My old gsm pro had an extended 1500mAh which I tried , with little improvement. I'm currently running a 2000mAh extended with the enlarged door and this helps but lots of juice is still draining away. On a positive note, the warmness seems to be mostly gone. My goal is to be able to go a full day with moderate usage. Today may be the day. I think I saw a 3000mAh as well, maybe at seidio. I was going to return the pro and get another one, but it sounds like they are all the same issue. An awesome phone, a real shame this is a problem. I think data off and gps off will help me alot. My $.02
Can you share the GPS toggle off and on program?

The battery counter of Atirx is by 10%. So, even it shows 90%, that may means 90% to 99%

Mine has been less than impressive today as well. Not good.
Mine seems to be pretty good so far. I think it'll take a few charges to get the most out of it though. I've used it a ton since about 10am and it's showing 80%. That could be anywhere from 80-89%.
Mines been sitting at 90% for about 3 hours now. It shows 90% when it drops down even a little bit because its only done in 10% increments. Pretty stupid if you have a phone to boast about battery... Motorola dropped the ball on that. You basically have a lowered battery meter all day lol
Thanks guys for all of the help!
My battery life has been decent, I unplugged it at 5pm yesterday, drove home with Trapster running (so screen on continuous for 30 minutes), used it heavily playing with it for a few hours in the evening, left it on to wake me up in the morning..
and drove back to work for 30 minutes with trapster when the 5% battery life warning went off right when I got to work.
No complaints here.
Unplugged the phone at 5am and it's 15mins to 12pm here - still full though I did laptop dock it for 5 mins several times to show people at work.

After 4 hours, I am at 75%. Email, tweaking, texting, 2 hr conference call on BT (Finiti w/Motospeak). If you check settings, Battery Manager, touch the Battery... you will see a usage breakdown. This phone is amazing. I expect after a few full charging cycles, the battery should get to full strength.
Is there a way to disable the 3G radio to save battery life (like in the iPhone)?

+1. Do a few charge cycles and then see how you feel.
I got my phone at 30 percent and it lasted four hours of straight playing around with until it hit 10 percent and I put it on a charger. My nexus one would have died with a full charge by then(original battery).
I'll see how it goes in a week, battery life takes a bit to figure out.
Remember that break-in period for batteries when you buy a new phone. Maybe after about a week it will get better? Also maybe try that battery calibrating trick...

Well considering there's no way to know it's at 75% lol it could be at 70% or 79%...either way it would show 70%. The battery only displays at 10% updates.
You can also set up custom battery saver modes in the settings>battery save(think that's it)
My battery life kicks arse. It may be helped with my ultimate juice and tasker, but I streamed rhapsody all day at work on rhapsody, and my battery is outperforming my iphone 4. I'm very thrilled.

[Q] wifi tethering +battery care

hi, so lately ive been using my 3g connection for use with my laptop via wifi tethering. when i have enough battery, i let it drain, and then continue tethering while charging until full, and then drain it again
my question is, with the fast pace of draining and charging almost everyday, will it cause any negative effects on my battery or my phone?
Yes it will just like every battery has a life cycle.
But should you worry.. No as I do exactly the same and have on numerous devices.

oh okay, glad to hear that, thanks!
if you have other methods that would do less damage to the battery in the long run, you can share it here
(maybe leave it plugged in even if full?)
Problem with leaving plugged in is heat as can get damn hot....
I tend to do a battery cycle very week or every flash of ROM/Kernel as the stats get awry since tether takes allot of juice.

[DISCUSSION] Our phones' BATTERY LIFE

Hi all, after a lots of pots from a lots of users claiming their battery is great or their battery is ok and even that their battery is a crap... I decided to open this thread to share my opinion with you all and see how many of you think like me.
Here it comes:
For me, BATTERY LIFE is how GOOD-OK-BAD our battery behaves and how much it lasts WHILE USING THE PHONE.
Having looooong periods of deep sleep is just the Stand-By 640hrs that Samsung itself offers with its ACE.
Under heavy use, ACE is supposed to last at least 11hrs using 2g and 6hrs using 3g.
Me just quoting Samsung and GSM ARENA
Click to collapse
If you do the math, most of the people that claim to have a HUGE battery life have their phones on DEEP SLEEP (Stand By) MOST OF THE TIME, plus they don't use 3g but WI-FI.
So, when they say: HEY BRO, I unplugged my phone 1 day ago and my battery is still at 30% and then they put a graphic on it you can see that about 20 hours the phone have been deep sleeping. Then you use it and PUFFF!!! A huge percent down...
I don't know if you know what I mean, english is not my first languaje... But what I'm trying to say is...
Battery life is most of the times the same WHEN USING THE PHONE!
Dude stop worrying too much abt battery... Simple battery rule. Charge it when its less than 20%... Let it drain by its own.. Then charge again... There s something called life explore it...
WOW!! What a superb reply... Great, wonderful, splendid...
You're so wise... OMG I can't even believe you took time to reply my request... Thank you Oh Lord!!!
Sigh!
My battery drains so fast on my home wi-fi I tend to browse whilst charging for most of the time (I'm sure it's not recommended). Wish I knew where people get the improved stats for wi-fi over 2g/3g from.
Of course samsung is gonna claim great battery life, they have to sell.
On my experience, i use the phone constantly with 3g for whatsapp and music all the time. I still charge it every night and thats ok. Its a smartphone, a micro computer. Unplugg your lap top and see how long it lasts! If you cannot get a day of battery, youre using your phone too much. The biggest battery hog is your screen, turn it off when not using, lower brightness, dont use 3g and 2g at the same time. Otherwise, get a stupidphone and marvel at your 5 day battery life.

The point about WiFi/3G/2G and battery stats is that if the phone isn't having to work hard to get its connection then it won't drain so much battery. So for example, I have almost no 3G coverage and no WiFi hotspot for miles, urgo if I have them both on the phone will search hard for them and drain battery. I have only 2G allowed and that works for me.
Technically if I had a WI-FI hotspot I should use that because it should provide better coverage than either 2G or 3G, and so the phone won't have to work so hard to get connectivity.
How strong is the signal for your WI-FI, is it very changeable?
I sit about 2m below it and it locks in seconds, varies between 2 and 3 bars on indication. Perceived drain is battery falls from 100% to charge warning in 3 - 4hrs approx.

Data switches off automatically when you are connected to the internet thru wi-fi!
my ace drains battery fastest when i play games, when playing any game 10-15 minutes my battery drains for like 10%
i have good battery life ,,about 36hours when using wifi
the problem of my battery life only happens when the phone is on. I've tried turning it off for a few days and the battery held up too long. So my advice for the battery last long, its always keep the phone off, and use it to shoot on someone's head (devs?). You may even withdraw the battery, lasts longer without recharging.
I suggest that someone makes a rom that doesnt work and keep the phone off, and we will have long battery life
Please hit tanks if I didnt help you

In my case, I've had the best battery life duration with StockRom Lite, AceOne (this seems to fly in my phone).
The AceOne rom seems to "survive" between 16- 18 hours in my chase listening music, checking some emails with 3G (not 16 hours, time by time).
I've installed a rom made by Nathan (TouchWiz) and I was worried about the battery's duration, but since I've installed nims kernel it works better, I'm gonna view how it works
