Hello all, I've got some questions
1. What does rooting mean? (And what does it?)
2. How can I hack/jailbreak my X10 mini?
3. How can I install ROMs? (and what is the most stable one for the x10 mini?)
4. Where do I can see what firmware my x10 mini is?
5. Is it safe to hack/jailbreak my phone?
6. What is the easiest way of hacking/jealbreaking the x10 mini?
These are all the questions I have for now (If I didn't forgot some) And I have read the stickies before, but I didn't get any wiser of them.
Hm, let's see
1. Rooting means getting complete access to your phone and perform actions not allowed before. THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. (There are ways to unroot and make the phone look like it has never been rooted before if you need to send it to assistance).
2. It depends what you mean with hack/jailbreak. Rooting is already a way of hacking it. If you wanna play some more with your phone, you can install a custom ROM and tweak its perfomance by raising CPU clock and so on.
3. Every ROM has its requirements and steps to be installed. AFAIK, all of them requires rooting, a specific firmware (ALWAYS CHECK FW VERSION BEFORE INSTALLING A CUSTOM ROM) and/or baseband version. Make sure your phone complies with all of them before even trying to install a custom ROM on it, or it will get bricked. There are a lot of custom ROMs with stable versions, just check the threads.
4. Settings > About phone > Page bottom
5. It voids your warranty and you may brick you phone, so do it at your own risk.
6. There are a lot of softwares to do that, just search in the threads.
If you looked the stickies and got no answer, I'm afraid I have to ask you to do it again and look better, the answers are all around.
Thanks for the information, I guess I rooted it because I now have an app called 'Superuser'. So can I get safely a ROM installed or do I have to do more? I also read something about kernel and stuff, what does that mean? Is it necessary for my phone?
Yes, if you want to use a custom ROM, you have to install the proper kernel. For MiniCM7, which is the one I use, you need nAa kernel (it also works with other ROMs).
ATTENTION REQUIRED: if you wanna try a custom ROM, you'll need to unlock your phone's bootloader. You can also search threads about it. If you try to flash a custom kernel without unlocking the bootloader, you'll brick your phone.

Hello everyone,
so i registered yesterday in this forum, know it for a while now but was never useful to me because the "coolest stuff" to do on my LG always was needed to root it and i was (and still am) a bit afraid of doing it, since i dont understand nothing about it but i heard it can mess up your phone. So i thought of posting something here.
So i have a LG P500 and yesterday i updated the firmware or software (dont know how to call it). Now i have the official Gingerbread udpate. I was a bit disappointed as i always wanted to have that locking animation that nexus S has.
Yes, i know you might tell me to use the search button but i looked for something similar and someone said something about rooting the phone to use the CM7.
So what i wanted to know is. What are the pros and cons with rooting. Do i need to "instal" CM7 or something like that to have that lock animation even having the 2.3.3 official update? Do you advice me to root my phone even though i bought it a few months ago?(like march or something)
Im sorry if i should searched a bit more but i think its better to just talk directly with people who understand this phone stuff better then i.

I myself upgraded to the LG 2.3 gingerbread firmware v20b
and it sucks to the core
i downgraded to froyo v10e the very next day itself
the pro's of rooting is that
you get access to the core android files
and use your phone to the max
(example overclock, customized ROM's,hardware acceleration etc)
in short you get a much better phone and no lg crap bloatware etc
the con's are
if rooting doesn't go properly you'll end up with a bricked phone
and your warranty will be void
my suggestion is
if your not so much into your cell
i mean you dont use it a lot for 3D gaming and other hi resource using applications
and just need for messaging,music,net
then dont root
else root
and enjoy your phone

im sure there are applications
or some launcher which will have what your looking for
Just do it.
I rooted it 3 days after I bought it.
But be careful while doing so, there are chances of bricking your phone.and yes, warranty will be void. But you can, anytime,go back to stock firmware just in case if you want your warranty.

For me the main advantage of rooting is that you can use a custom recovery (= do nandroid backups) and that you can install different kernels (better performance but mainly better battery life).
I have been on official 2.3.3 since months now (waiting until Andy's Phoenix ROM matures a bit), and I must say that I'm quite happy with it (with LauncherPro of course).
Just be sure to install a good recovery (CWM 4.0.1.5 or so) and that you make a nandroid backup before you flash something new.
Oh and here's the howto I used to root my brother's phone yesterday...

So to see if i get it, by "custom recovery" you're saying i can use a "custom image" that someone created to improve my phone?
I didnt quite undestood the nandroid and CWM recovery parts! Im really sorry for all the questions but im still a noob in this area and i was hopping i could get to know a little more about this in this forum!

Hi, as u said u r novice, & does not know anything.
My suggestion is to use ur cell for few months & search in google & XDA whatever u have doubt. Then understand one by one things.
I am telling because my cell was bricked with doing all these things, I voided warranty & i have to change my entire board for 3,000/-
I think no use with all these rooting & flashing, roms, getting headache with this stuff.
Just use ur phone as it is, & u may install new new softwares & games as market is producing a lot daily.
I have bad experience with all these experiments.

Rooting is NOT for novices.
Rooting requires some basic (to slightly advanced) understanding of the way this android software works. It also requires some basic understanding of the way in which kernel, over-clocking etc., work. And, one should also understand the limitations (of hardware, processing power, storage, RAM etc.,) of one's mobile phone.
Thankfully, I rooted my P500 successfully yesterday. And, loaded Titanium Backup and got going in the `rooted mobile' arena.
Removed some unwanted/useless applications like bollywoodji, vaccination tracker, etc., successfully.
i think rooting is a piece of cake. enable debugging mode, connect phone to pc, press the ROOT button

Actually very few people have bad experiences with rooting and related stuff. Most of us (including me) have done it right, and are enjoying the benefits.. Just follow the instructions carefully and everything will be alright. And make sure that whatever process you do, it is NOT INTERRUPTED in between. That's all.
Also, if you were in the stock froyo firmware, you could have simply rooted using gingerbreak. The 2.3 based firmware can also be rooted, but requires a few more steps, you can search and find out about that.
I would personally suggest not to use ROM manager for installing custom recovery on your P500, because when I used it, my phone got stuck in the fastboot mode. But with a little effort I could make it right.

I have just got my new samsung galaxy S-II white. For a start i know what is rooting and why it should be done to unlock the potential of the phone. Have read quite some threads in various forums over here, just to get more confused .
I am mainly tangled in the variety of ways and numerous methods of doing the same thing, or apparently the same thing with different objective and consequences.
Hence I need help to clear up the confusion with a simplified path to explore the device:
1. ROM, Kernel, Firmware..........are these different names for the same thing, or are they different. If they are different, at which level does rooting work, do I need to update all of them or some or one to get the rooted phone.
2. What are the different versions of ROM , Kernel and Firmware available and which ones are recommended. Is Gingerbread 2.3.4 a ROM or a firmware.
3. I have read a lot about custom cooked ROMs. For a newbie like me is there any recommendation. I am thinking about getting on to Cyanogen Mod, is it a ROM or a kernel or a firmware and is it the best all rounder in battery/performance/features ratio. If not then any other recommendations.
5. Insecure Kernel....?, is it a mandatory requirement for rooting, or rooting can be done without it. How do I find the one which is compatible with my phone version / region.
6. CF-Root, SuperOneClick, ROOT APP ????? which one is the safest with easier possibility of recovery (if anything goes bad) and most recommended.
7. Nandroid, ClockworkMod, Odin ???????????? what are these used for. Is it mandatory to use them before rooting to make phone backup images. Which one is the easiest and safest to use in case of a recovery situation.
8. Can I or do I update the original Samsung OTA firmware updates, once I have rooted the phone or if i have flashed with custom ROM/firmware/kernel like Cyanogen Mod.

Lets see if I can answer all of your questions...
1. ROM is the software of the phone and kernel is the core of that software. As you might think, rooting ocurs in the core, so it affects the kernel.
2. ROMs you have a lot in this forum, as well as different kernels. Recomended are several (CM7, MIUI or Hypedroid for example).
3. CyanogenMod is a ROM, but cooking ROMs is more a term of changing the visual (icons, battery stats, animations, etc) more than building a ROM itself. You can build a ROM from it sources, but it's a totally different thing from cooking a ROM. If you want performance, you should seek a minimal ROM or some ROM that could let you easily add/delete components, to avoid having much load on the ROM and thus improving the phone. Also the kernel works a great deal in battery performance, you can see several discussion threads in the forum about them.
5. I think any rooted kernel is considered an insecure kernel, but I might be wrong on this one...
6. I would say CF-Root, its not complicated to follow and the result is the desired.
7. ClockworkMod is a custom recovery used to backup the phone (nandroid), flash ROMs and many other things. Odin is a PC flashing software used to flash directly to the phone. For a recovery you should use CWM.
8. If you update a stock ROM (or OTA update) into a rooted kernel, the kernel will be overwriten and you will loose root. You can follow the same steps to achieve root from there.

read several tutorials – if you’ve never done it before don’t rush into it
Misreading one line of instructions can mess the whole process up and leave you with a dysfunctional phone. Its not as daunting as it seems.. but you do need to know exactly what to do before you do it.... and while your doing it. Also check compatability with model numbers and software versions
for example my phone is an x10 mini pro but if I take the battery out its actually a u20i
Super one click rooted my phone without problems but i found i had to disable usb debugging and re enable it while it was doing its thing
youtube is also a good source for tutorials

if you have baseband update, the rest y very easy
the requirements are
bootloader unlocking
updated baseband
1.-search the web, update baseband to the exact model, e10i does not equal the E10A
if you install a firmware for another device, you may lose the 3G signal

HI,
I rooted my sony experia mini e10i successfully using z4root app. now i have to unlock bootloader. what tool should be downloaded , i searched in google., many tools and many views for doing this. i am really confused. Please suggest any good and reliable tool to unlock the bootloader and please also suggest the steps for doing so. should i flash kernel and then rom or both at same time? in some tutorials they said,
1.use CWM ROM manager and flash recovery
2. poweroff and then power on , press back key
3. in recovery mode, wipe all cache,
4. install rom from sd card
Are these steps work fine for me? This is the first time i am trying these flashing custom rom. so am little bit nervous.

As many of us, it's also my very first time that i'm attempting to upgrade my x10 mini's android version from 2.1 to 2.3.7 and i'm pretty worry of making it useless (bricking it? )
After spending hours and hours of reading several guides.. i was able to root my xperia, installed and log into CWM (v3.2.0.0-3) successfully. But now i have 15 different guides with 50 different steps to follow.. And now i am pretty stuck upon few basic (yes noobish) questions:
"Unlocking bootloader" means that, after installing CWM or xRecovery, we have to use the flashtool method or are we done with the unlocking part?
After getting done with unlocking bootloader, do we firstly install the new kernel and secondly the new Rom or the opposite?
Is there a way to recognize which Rom requires xRecovery or CWM before its installation?

If you want a ROM that runs on a custom kernel you do need to unlock the bootloader, that's the only tricky part about the whole process
Which order you install kernel and rom doesn't make a difference, as long as the two are meant for each other. That said, it is common practice to install the kernel first and then the ROM.
xRecovery is (usually) only used in old ROMS that run on stock kernel, the 2.3.7 ROM you're aiming for will probably use CWM (Which is included in all custom kernels anyway). Which of the two is required is stated in the opening post of the ROM you choose.

If you're really that much of a noob, then there are two possible solutions: either read and learn and teach yourself everything you don't know, or let someone else do this for you. The tutorials and guides are all out there, very detailed, and just because a guide is older than you'd expect doesn't mean it's outdated. A lot of guides on this are still very much valid. There are also threads and guides designed especially for n00bs, so definitely go over those too.
The whole process has been outlined countless times (you could've done some searching yourself), but here it is again:
Unlock the bootloader - keywords: pudding, ihop
Flash a custom recovery - keywords: cwm, twrp, romracer
Flash a custom ROM of choice - keywords: too many to mention
(Notice that rooting is not mentioned here, if you're going to install a custom ROM rooting is irrelevant.)
The process assumes you have Motorola USB drivers, the moto-fastboot utility, and the Android SDK fully installed and operational.
There is no physical difference between USA and UK Atrixes, only the software. Also been covered many many times already.

It would depend on what you want from your device. If you want ultimate stability and don't mind a somewhat outdated platform, then I'd recommend CM7. If you want the latest OS version and don't mind slight instability and lack of functionality, then CM10. There are also the "blurry" variants - modified stock GB ROMs, stock and modified ICS (based on the leak)...

Nope. I can't tell anything beside these facts. Nice reply. Only that I'd suggest avoiding miui roms and once rooted, flashing of a pure, aosp based Rom.
