[Q] does juice defender work - Motorola Droid RAZR

will jd ultimate significantly improve my battery life,i'm a moderate user on a rooted razr

I used it for a while, and didn't find any significant modifications.

I did notice a significant difference when using JD Ultimate. However I had to stop using it because it interfered with my apps that sync in the background (Dropsync, etc).

What i did was I just went to stock.
I go back and forth. But I rooted and then
Bloat freeze and system app remover that could
help alot.

yeah it does work, helps to achieve the 12 hour battery life. read my thread on how to achieve it using juicedefender, just check threads started by me

It works well and I recommend it to everyone EXCEPT for whatsapp "whores" who needs a working connection every second.
What is does is simple. Basically, It turns off 3G connection, and turn it on every 15 mins. If you have an ongoing connection, like if you're downloading a file, it will not turn off its 3G connection until the download is over.
This will not affect phone calls and SMS.
For Ultimate, you can customise it turn 3G on more frequently during peak hours like checking every 5 min during 9 to 5 (working hrs), and set it to less frequently during sleep time.

I dont recommend jd ultimate, on rooted stock if your in an area with 4g lte and want to use it, it seems that it caused some strange issues booting down and up the radio, I used it on my og Droid with cm7 and it worked like a dream, so I'd guess it'd work better on an asop built ROM

Yeah, this ^
It DOES significantly improve battery life, but when you go to use something like a browser, there's a delay while the wifi or 3G/4G radio "wakes up". No free lunch.
Keep your GPS off when not in use, keep screen brightness at a reasonable level, use wifi over 3G/4G when possible, you'll improve battery life without the downsides.

I use it, better than smart actions for me, nicest thing it learns, and you can change it to your needs. Sometimes you do have to wait for radio's to reconnect, but it's seconds, and you can make it fit your needs, and it does save battery life, just depends how much you want it to control.

Worth it when absolutely needed, has drawbacks

This is an accurate assessment of jd. I have ultimate and find that it does extent my battery life by several hours but you will notice a bit of lag with your data connection and inconsistency for apps with background sync. I turn it off when I know I'll be around a plug if needed.

19 hours yesterday!
i got 19 hours still had 30%battery life, normal activaties for me include fb,words with friends, speedtest, texting, even talked on phone for 20 minutes,jd ultimate really does work, you just have to play with it to get it right and remember not much will ever help if your screen is on a long time

I think if its not there then it just doesn't use it.
The setting are usually to just automagically find the right network.
Having said that, I sever data completely when I don't need it. I am in a LTE area and it does use battery.
I use an app called 2x battery to do it automagically. Basically, when my screen is off, so is my data. I don't 'need' anything pushed down to my phone that bad. I can wait til I turn the screen on...

You CAN use apps like 2x battery or juice defender, but they cause more problems then they are worth. If battery is your number one priority i highly recommend going back to gb. With custom gb roms you can disable LTE use GSM/HSPA only, plus custom gb kernels allow undervolting, which will also help with battery

All depends on your configuration, by as an example, I'm using a Samsung skyrocket. On gb I was getting 24-26 hours total life with onscreen time of about 5 hours. On ics, same apps, same config, 14 hours, 3 hours onscreen

Building a rom from my build

I have a very light on resources build that you can get 3 to 4 days on light to moderate use with a gingerbread base. I am asking how i take my files and make them into a build. I have ubuntu root and a razr but i am terrible at code. I would like to give back to the forums and i am not claiming to be a dev or an official but I have my phone at decent settings and want to share. I will credit the devs as well. when i get down to almost fully discharging the phone, i will report battery stats. I can not wait for ICS.

well define "light to moderate use" for you, because I can hit 5-7 days with light use, which still has about 3 hours screen on time, on my Maxx.

Well i got my phone idle to be at the top with 31 percent but Android OS is up there underneath it. Battery life was terrible at first but as i modified things it got better. How did you get Android OS that low of usage? I was hoping for a day without dying and now i got 3 to 4 depending on use.
I have turned pretty much everything off. I have the suspend bug. 50 to 100 text messages, constantly checking the time. I installed cpu spy and if i dont touch my phone it deep sleeps to like 90% of the time. Nothing has really changed until i disabled mobile data and set to cdma only then the battery got noticeably better. When i start using it then it decides to drain more. Are you complete stock or rooted slightly modified stock? Thanks and my name is daniel as well.

OK, my settings are CDMA only (because we have no 4G in my area), and using smart actions "battery extender" set with triggers of "Screen off" and "charging" (charging so data will be on when phone is plugged to charger) and the Actions are "Disable background sync" and "Disable cellular data". Basically if my screen is off then my 3G/4G radios are off, what you lose with these settings is "push notifications", and the 3G can sometimes take up to a minute to reconnect. I am rooted but only done that about 3 weeks ago so I could use the screenshot apps and adfree, I have not frozen or removed ANY bloat. The other thing I do is every other time I charge it (so about every 2 weeks) I reboot the phone, you know just power it off all the way and back on, takes a few minutes but it seams to help, when I first got my phone I was getting about 3 days then after a month of continuous use the phone got slow and glitchy so I rebooted it and the next charge made it 4 days, so I made it a regular thing, I guess like with windows XP rebooting clears some files or something, the smart action settings above then took me from 4 days to 5+ days.
On the default "battery extender" triggers there is one for "motion" you need to remove that one.

Which ICS rom has the best battery life?

I've been using all sorts of different combos of roms and finally went back to locked MOF rom based off 2.3.5. But with no 4g in my new residence I'd like to go back to ICS. With this being said, which of the newly updated ICS rom have the best stand alone (not being assisted by any apps) battery life?

It really will be determined by what you plan to use on your phone? Any of the roms can give great or terrible battery life. I build the MIUI for the mighty little Photon. I love it, and the battery life is good enough for my liking overall (avg around 10 hours on an Anker 1600mAh battery). If you want better battery life, use the following:
1) Keep screen timeout down to under 30 seconds. Havina this screen on fora minute is just dumb...LOL
2) Set your e-mail accounts up to poll every 15 or 30 minutes. Having them on PUSH will require them to run in the background all day, and will reduce your battery life...especially if it's an Exchange one.
3) Turn off GPS when not in use. This is a KILLER on ANY ICS rom. It'll suck your battery dead faster than any other thing on your phone
4) Turn off wifi if you're somewhere you won't be using it. Having it constantly searching for open access points will kill your battery
5) Use a darker theme
My best advice...try all of the roms....since a flash takes literally 2 minutes, you can try them all. Flash it, run it for a day, see if you like it, then if you don't go on to the next one

No disrespect intended, sir, but I hate this idea. One of the first thing I do is crank my screen timeout up as high as it will go (10 minutes, I think). Nothing worse than your screen dimming when you're trying to do something. If I'm using it, the dimmer can back the frak up. When I'm done, I'll hit the power button and let it go to sleep.
That said, if I'm in low light, I turn the brightness down as far as it will go. Makes it easier to read. My CM7 notification toggle for brightness has two settings: Dim and 100%. I use both regularly depending on where I am.
Also, I find that battery use fluctuates a lot. I've gotten 20 hours on my stock battery -- that was in CM9 or Paranoid Android, one of the two (the latter is CM9 based, but the CM9 and Paranoid Android bases are outdated). I've also gotten as little as 6. I've never heard of a universal benchmark to measure battery life definitively. It's gonna differ every day because your usage changes every day. It's gonna differ from person to person because your location in relation to cell towers is different from mine. At home, my phone works its ass off to stay connected. At work, not so much. My 20 hour run was at work.
None of the ROMs have patently abysmal battery life. One thing that will definitely help is the lack of background processes, so any de-Blur'd ROM (including all ICS ROMs) would have a leg up over stock for that reason alone. Blur has so much crap running in the background, it's disgusting.
Oh, and Amazon Appstore and its notification spam. I bet that sucks up a bit of battery. "Hey hey look at me, you have X updates" *open Appstore* "No apps to update, trollface.jpg". Seriously, the Update tab should display a trollface when there's nothing to update, because you probably went there because of that stupid notification. Maybe use Titanium to freeze Appstore if apps you got through it don't require it to verify your purchase, and follow the free app of the day via Twitter via SMS or something.

Hey, good question about which ICS Rom having the best battery life. I would definitely have to go with CM9 by Jokersax. The battery life may be bad for a few days, but according to the replies and posts on his website. Battery life will be more exceptional after 3 days of usage. I like my CM9 Rom and it has better battery life everyday. But it is all based on personal preference.
I'm using CM9 7.0.0
Just got it last night and personally the battery life kinda sucks. But I just set up my profiles and whatnot. I also notice the battery life getting better.
Then again it could completely be my fault for always using my phone.

Well I've tested cm 9 for almost 3 days and battery life only lasted for 10 hours on moderate use. I then chose to go with miui for 2 days battery life again was a little bit better only getting 12 hours with moderate use. Best battery= no data

(I hope the long time users here will bear with me while I restate something that is I think needs to be said. I see a lot of posts that either directly or indirectly reverence battery use. Here is what I do. )
I've had my amaze for a while and it has a real problem with battery use. I realized one day that I really only needed my data connection when checking, email or weather. So I now shut off the data confection unless I need it . My battery now goes all day on about 25%. I realize that some people need more frequent data, but if you are a light user, it might be worthwhile to keep data off.
I've considered buying an app that automatically turns the data on every hour our so, but haven't wanted to bother.
Note that playing games also burns through battery (due to the large screen and high processor use), but there is little to be done about that. I'm not a gamer, but when my son get ahold of my Amaze, I often bring out my spare batteries!
I'm on NRG with S-On.

Yeah, I thought about Tasker. I already own JuiceDefender, and I'm too cheap to spring for Tasker! But I may think about it, depending on how well JD works.
Back when I had my galaxy s 4g, all my old devs built this feature right into their roms. All of their custom roms on xda since gingerbread came out in fact. They would automatically shut off the phone's data completely when you turned your screen off for more than 10 seconds. And then, automatically turned it back on when you unlocked your phone. It doubled battery life easy with regular use. Even more because it was built in and didn't waste processing power running an app to do it instead.

I'm on my first day with JuiceDefender. The nice thing about JD is that it can be set to turn on the data periodically (I use once per hour). That way all the sync can occur while the phone is still off. So my weather and facebook stay up to date, but the data is mostly off.
System app built into Rom or separate app, still uses the same resources. It's not going to use less memory or processor because it's in the Rom. Just comon sence
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4g
*Common Sense; FTFY. And you're right. Now that I think about, I believe it was kernel based. Which is why it was across roms.

Poor battery life thus far...

I left my phone on to charge overnight so it's 100% when I woke up. I turned it on to check the weather for the day and before I turned it off, it's down to 99%. When I got to work, I turned it back on and I'm at around 90%. I got home today and I'm at around 30-40% with just some light web browsing and video watching at work. I flashed my T-Mo HTC One with a custom rom that was supposed to help increase battery life.
I'm not blaming the phone yet though. I'm leaning on it being T-Mobile's fault. The data connection seems to be very unreliable, jumping from < 1MB to 10MB download while still supposedly being 4G (icon shows 4G). I read that this can be a constant strain on the battery? I plan to turn off the data and manually turn it on when I want to use it tomorrow to test out this theory.

Absolutely the wrong advice. Task killers NEVER need to be used for anything.
If your battery life is poor, it's one of a couple things:
1) an app is keeping your device from going into deep sleep. I'm going to bet it might be maps. Go into the settings on the maps app and make sure it's not updating your location for latitude.
Failing that, search for betterbatterystats on XDA, install that program, and look for wakelocks. Read the main thread on XDA to learn about what wakelock is what. Maps is a big one, so is facebook.
2) if your signal borderlines on 0 signal and 2g/edge. If your signal is low, then fire up wifi to get it to connect to wifi calling. It'll disable the 2g/3g radios and rely on wifi only, which will be a huge save in terms of battery.
NEVER EVER use task killers. It's a myth that's been debunked years ago by the android engineers.

Find Better Battery Stats. It's paid on the market (which I recommend) but he has it free in the apps section on here. Also find GSam battery. Use those two apps to find your wakelock. Use the partial wakelock setting in BBS to find what it is exactly.
Between those two apps you can find any leaks. I would say that it is either the location reporting being on in Maps or a nasty wakelock caused by the ipservice app which is a backbone of WiFi calling.

I recommand Greenify app. Rather than killing app it hibernate until you manualy open any app and give info about wakelock by individual apps.

Now that you mention Maps, I do remember a feature where I set my home location and the phone would update directions on how to get home. I also had automatic locations on. I went and turned it all off. I hope this is it.

Thanks. I will give it a try. So does Greenify work much in the same way as iOS multitasking? I came from iOS, and when you switch apps, the app that is in the background gets put into a stasis until you switch back to it.
I've been doing it the old fashioned way as of recently and it's helped tremendously. I have different little widgets (the HTC ones) to turn off certain functions, like GPS (Google Now and other geo-location apps still work, they just don't pinpoint you EXACTLY to a coordinate), WiFi, Bluetooth, brightness, sync, etc.
Additionally, I also have power saver turned on to lower the screen brightness a bit and keep the clock speed of the device lower. Lol it sounds like I'm limiting the hell out of the device, when in reality there's no difference other than the upkeep of having to turn certain things on when you want to use them.

Yeah power saver is pretty awesome, haven't actually noticed any performance changes with it on.

I thought about doing all of that too, but when you think about it, it seems pretty silly to go through all that just to be able to get some usage out of your device.
I've turned off a lot of things that were hogging my battery and am using Greenify. Battery life is a lot better at the moment, but it's still nowhere as efficient as my iPhone 5.
