Screen off center - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I noticed that my screen is not perfectly centered. It's not a big deal, bit it does annoy me a bit. Anybody else notice this? Does anybody know of an app that allows me to shift the display? I know there are settimgs for certain computer monitors, but haven't found anything for phone displays.

I mean that the LCD panel is not centered to the bezel.

If you see earlier post, I think what he means is on the physical device, the bezel on the left and right aren't the same size. The physical LCD portion of the screen isn't centered.

oh...ok..thats wierd

Hmmm. Mine looks centered.

Mines looks as centered as it could be. I don't know of any display shifting applications. Ill look into it though.

yup mine is centered to

Hmm, maybe I got a rare unit with this issue. I never dropped the Note (only had it for a few days). I doubt a screenshot will matter, as it won't show the bezel. Oh well, as I stated earlier, it's not a huge deal.

LoL...sorry man. I know these kinds of threads open a can of worms with people like myself, who notice the slightest imperfections. :/
I love this phone so much, I don't really mind this minor flaw.
Sent from my Galaxy Note (SGH-i717) using XDA Premium.

A screen shifting app probably wouldn't do any good, as the note is already using every pixel. And since all of the Samsung AMOLED screens, to my knowledge at least, are set up so that the AMOLED panel and digitizer are bonded to the glass, it's pretty much impossible for a drop to shift the display under the glass. If your's isn't centered, it probably is a slight defect that was caused by a lazy worker aligning the AMOLED panel and digitizer improperly when assembling the device.
If it's really terrible, try your luck at returning it as a manufacturers defect, which it is. If the reps in your area are anything like mine, they will get you a replacement no problem. I returned a couple of captivates because the speaker was sketching out on me, even though I couldn't reproduce it in store for them, and they took it no problem.
Good luck!
Edit: Wait. Not sure if I'm correct about the AMOLED being bonded as well as the digitizer. Too lazy to research it though...haha. Either way though, return it if it's bugging you, as mine is perfectly centered, as it should be.

Shouldn't use the word lazy like that, they work hard assembling these things for lower pay.
OP should exchange the phone.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note I71M

Not sure how I used it wrongly, I didn't say all of the workers are lazy. I know that it could have been a simple, honest mistake by the assembling worker, but it's not that big of a stretch for it to be a result of a worker not paying attention to detail. It could also be a defective AMOLED panel that wasn't manufactured properly, but I was just making one suggestion.
I know they aren't paid well, and low rates of pay don't provide a ton of incentive to work hard. But with my personal work ethic, your rate of pay shouldn't affect your performance. I believe that if somebody is paying you for something, you should do the best work you can. I used to work in a plastic film production plant, basically running the whole recycling/reprocessing operation for the facility, for $9 an hour. I could have run the machine at a slower pace and satisfied my supervisors, but I ran the machine as fast as possible and left at the end of every day with not a single dry spot on my clothing due to sweat. The guy one step above me, that worked side by side with me, was being paid $27 an hour for doing much less work than me.
If it was in fact a worker not paying attention to detail, I would say that qualifies as lazy. There's no way to possibly find that out though, so I just made that suggestion. Not sure how I could offend anybody with that, as I didn't say they were all lazy, only that one worker may have been.

Considering that some have a screen the not aligned properly, could we assume that's what's causing the spen to seem not calibrated correctly?

Cracked casing already??

I just noticed on my phone that the whole silver casing on my white S3 is cracking in atleast 10 places. I have not dropped the phone at all and it just started doing this. I took it to sprint and they said they have no idea whats happening so I called customer service and they're sending me a new one.
Sooo has this happened to anyone else?? Look at the sides real carefully and please reply!
Unfortunately, this has been happening with numerous S3s in Europe prior to our US release. No clue there why either.
I checked mine carefully and I have what looks like 4 seams, one in each corner. Almost positive they came with the phone tho.

I have the same four seams. Don't see any cracks on my device, luckily. I've been using the pebble blue 16GB S3 since the 21st.
Hmm yeah mine has the 4 seams as well. Are all of yall's the blue version?? Mine is white but i doubt that makes a difference.
Mine is white too. Hopefully you can get a replacement soon and the rest of us don't develop this problem

Holy Hell.. well can't argue Samsung isn't using cheap plastic build quality. I thought they were on top of it. The sgs3 seems so Damn fragile with the weaker screen and plastic compared to my s2.
It's like pick your poison. Get an s3 that has great specs and software/hardware enhancements but it'll crumble in your hands.
Or evo that has great specs and camera but it has sense 4, resource hungry and will die without warning.

The 1st thing i did out of the package was inspect the blue S3 and automatically noticed those 4 seems however I just took it as that's how is was manufactured and not a defect.

But s... happens and 20 mil units sold in less than 2 month some of them will be faulty
I've seen about 20 phones and pretty much all have that problem to some degree. I had a 16gb blue and now a 32gb blue and both gathered dust around the edges and home button. Yours seems to be slightly worse on the side.
Anyway, although I love the phone I can't believe samsung's build quality can be so bad. I also own an iphone and after 2 years it still hasn't gathered any dust anywhere. Shame such a good phone is spoilt by crap build quality.

You obviously have a white model which is why the dust doesn't show up as much as on the blue. Even then it mostly shows in bright light / sunlight.
BTW, my preference of phone is none of your business. Just stating facts. I sell phones for a living and haven't seen 1 yet that had a perfect fit along the edges and back cover for that matter. For a phone with such a big price tag that is pretty **** on samsungs part.
FWIW, I've owned the S1, S2 and now S3 and the galaxy series is my preferred phone. But Apple build quality is miles ahead, and that includes the 3gs iPhone which had a rubber seal between the screen and edging to avoid dust buildup.

You have a white one and since the dust on mine shows as white, it obviously wont stand out on yours.
You can do a quick test. Rip a small piece of paper and run the pointy bit along the edges, front and back. If it can go in, then it will gather dust.
As for your friends blue one, check it while sitting indoors with sunlight shining through a window onto the phone. He will likely see dust around the edges. That's how I noticed mine.

believe me i tried your suggestion because i know it's a good thing to clean the edges once in a while so that the dust won't accumulate, but using a thin piece of paper and trying to insert the right angle edge did not go in.
so there are no gaps.

Thanks for testing. Well its good to know that there are ones out there with no gaps. Pity mine has a small gap at the bottom. Not really noticeable but in certain lighting conditions the dust does show.
After selling my 16gb to buy a 32gb model, was hoping the second one was better but it was just the same. Small gap or not, I wouldn't give up my phone for anything out there. The S3 is pure beauty.

Tired of magic and other unexplained phenomenon.

So today I was outside with the kids while they were running around the yard fighting eachother with sticks. My phone rang. I pulled it out of my pocket and dropped it on my porch. My otterbox defender protected my phone as advertised, but, upon impact my s pen shot out of my phone and over the side of the porch.
I immediately jumped over the side of the porch to retrieve it. (My knee still hurts) I haven't seen it since. I am convinced that when I dropped the phone it opened up a wormhole and sent my unsuspecting stylus to another dimension. I've been looking for it for 4 hours. I don't have tall grass or anything else for it to hide in. I've found all kinds of things on the side of my house but not the sizeable white and silver s pen. I even looked on the gutter drain to make sure it didn't stick in the side or something weird.
I wish there was an app that could help me. But alas, there is not.
Sad day... sad day indeed.

They're pretty damn expensive to replace too.
This might sound extreme and can and likely will backfire....but, maybe try and replicate the event by throwing one of the children over the side where the S pen launched. This way you may not only get the S pen back, but hopefully the child will remember important details of their travels and not just get back the important stylus but also help with advances in time travel.
Or they might just land on their head and call child protective services.

First day I had my otterbox on i dropped the phone in a restaurant with that non slip tile. Dropped it from waist height and it hit so hard it chipped the plastic part of the otterbox (under the silicone, but phone is fine.) However! My pen shot literally halfway across the restaurant. I'm pretty sure Samsung put emergency eject technology in our phones, much the same as jets. They can say it's for the safety of our pens, but at ~30 bucks a pop, we know better. Well played, Samsung.

Well if the gap is affecting the seal and water/sweat can get in.... Then yes that would be a problem...

It will get in it regardless of crack or no crack.

I looked at one in an ATT store, and the plastic bezel was terrible. Didn't line up, gaps, looked like it was cut with a stake knife. Made me not want the phone. Then went to wal-mart, and looked at a t-mobile phone. It was perfect, so I bought it.
I still would like to see a picture. I'm pretty sure I have one but I just want to confirm. Maybe I'm just too anal.
If you want to subject yourself to the OCD torture of the gap issues, there us a thread in the international One forum that has many pictures of the gap.
Also in the at+t forum there is s thread called gapgate. You'll find more pics there as well.
Some I would say are valid while a lot are being really OCD and nitpicking.

For the bargain price of $650, would you really expect it to be perfect?
i also had the small gap at top, a little disappointing, but we all have this issue, making it not a issue

Yes but this phone was never intended to be in or around any liquid substance so if that causes an issue, it's user error.

I'm not sure if the gap does affect the seal, but all phones have some sort of seal even if they're not intended to be in or around a liquid substance. Sudden changes in climate cause moisture to form, and all manufacturers use measures to prevent it from going beneath the screen. I doubt the gaps affect this, so my rambling on was basically to say that I understand where the concern comes from.

Oh I totally agree. Although from my observation, the gaps have been drastically overblown.

I have a insanely small gap on mine but I decided to live with it since for the last 2 weeks I've examined the screen every day looking for dead pixels. Have found none. Seems like a lot of people are having them so I didn't want to risk getting one with dead pixels. I think it was a good compromise.

The gap is a serious build-quality defect
Folks, this is a serious manufacturing defect build-quality issue in the first batches of the phone that we have got.
There must be ABSOLUTELY NO GAP between the chamfered metal edge and the plastic.
HTC themselves have claimed this, most recently a few days back in a video that they put up themselves boasting of its ZERO-GAP CONSTRUCTION!!!
Those who do not see it or understand the gap in your phone, please see the videos below.
Here you can clearly see the gap:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwOu5oXpjVQ
And as you can see in the video below, just press your phone at the edge and you can clearly see the gap "closing" (what a shame),
Try it and you will most likely see it on your phone. This is really a shame.

Folks this is serious.
I am having this gap too. (I went to the T-Mobile store and even their demo unit had this issue and they said that most of the phones in the batches so far have this issue.)
I am quite surprised by the responses from most of those who responded so far in this thread. Hope I have helped to make aware that these are indeed defective devices that we have got.
You paid a premium price for an expensive device that is supposed to be zero-gap construction and has been been advertised as such by HTC: unibody, precision-cut, diamond-cut, zero-gap construction.
(Here: http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-one/ and most recently here:

This is a serious build quality issue in the batches of phones that have come out so far.
The sad thing is I showed this to the manager at my local Tmobile store and they said that they are not recognizing this as a defect and will be charging restock fees to exchange.

Is the gap really an issue?

Just wondering, how many of you have a gap? Also where is it located and do you care? I have a small but long gap on the top by the power button. I also have a hang around the bottom speaker. I'm just worried that over time dust will collect under the screen.

Do people realize that gapless applies only to the back?

Glad to hear someone else understood it correctly.
Was gonna exchange it but I'm not gonna be super anal about it. It's not even that bad.

What gap are you guys referring to?
If there is a gap on this phone, it's not enough to be an issue at all to me. I'd be hard pressed to find any imperfections in either of the two we have in the house.

Have a gap between my incisors. I wish I could refund to God. :[
I don't have any gaps or overhangs on my phone. Just 2 minor stuck pixels that you can barely see.

Does it really matter though? Im worried that dust will collect over time.

I don't think you need to worry about dust. I had dust with my sensation but the screen was different. These new LCD panels have zero gap between the LCD and the glass. I personally wouldnt have noticed any gaps if you guys had better things to do than to point out these little oddities with your phones. My device is perfect in my eyes so I think that's all that matters. Wow this phone feels nice. Not the easiest to grip without a case but it's very easy on the eyes.
