ok so i tried the latest and greatest blaze modem that released yesterday...
my speeds practically went up 9 fold, here's the story
using saurom, and latest blaze modem
however, here's what im running in to
the latest blaze modem that was released yesterday has increased my speeds by alot
yesterday when i was on telus sgh t989 modem, i was getting about 386kbps at my house and only 2 bars of service. on top of that, at the time it seemed as though my 4g was having a bunch of micro disconnects. also my upload was around 2kbps
today i come home and try the latest blaze modem, and my download went up to 3.8mbps (decent improvement i would say in the least), no micro disconnects, double the amount of bars in reception, but my upload is around 10kbps...
10kbps takes a long time to send mms... (trying not to be whiny, but that's all i use upload for when im not on wifi)
anybody else having this issue?
Can I ask what rom you are currently on? Also have you tried on another rom?
starting to hate this captcha image verifications
anywho, i'm a bit of a noob(sorry, but i never needed to really mod anything untill i bought the galaxy note), so i will answer this to the best of my knowledge.
im on saurom, haven't tried anything else
Some things just don't make sense. I'm also on saurom and its the only rom I can get decent speeds on. Someone else in another thread said he got good speeds on the unofficial collective. I get 10Mbps on saurom and only 3Mbps on collective.
I'm trying to figure out why but it seems everyone has different input. I wonder if saurom version matters cause I run a older build 4a.
well im glad that im not the only one that feels that way (regardless of how noob i am)
i tried multiple guides, and always stuck with the easy way
so far this is basically what i have
adw and used the latest blaze modem
saurom (latest according to the post that i saw)
the build.prop.test (of courst moved the .test part, still using this) that supposedly magically enhances reception
problems i have
a) download has improved but upload is retarded
b) reception still sucks even after the build, but when my phone is at two bars, immediately when i touch it, reception doubles...??
once again, i know im a noob, but im great at following directions... i dunno is anyone else having the issues i have?
oh and oddly, whenever i try to do a speedtest, my receptions goes from 3 bars to 4 bars... (25%...really?) as soon as speed test is done, it reverts..... does this makes sense to anyone?

oh and another odd thing, when i run speed test on wifi, i only get around 5.6mbps, when my computer says 32mbps.
the app im running is speedtest.net on the phone

Wifi tests on my phone show the full 25Mbps my Internet is capable of. I would suggest u try the rom I'm on if u can find it. Saurom 4a and don't apply that build.prop you are using, it could be causing you more harm then good.
Retest and repost afterwards
ok so deleted the "aftermarket" build.prop file from my system folder, and replaced it with the original build.prop that i had
results:
reception isonly at 2 bars (20% less)
speedtest with wifi shows: 15.747 mbps
speedtest on comp: 18.87 mbps, marginal difference, understandable
speedtest on 4g: 4.854 mbps, upload is at 2.487 mbps per second, YOU SOLVED THE ISSUE, although i must admit i feel dumb for not thinking of this... you get a kudos, if you ever swing by rochester, i'll buy you a round of beer
Exactly which blaze modem did you use? I just cleared my cache and flashed the blaze telus one. Rebooted twice and did a speed test and am only getting .06 mbps and somehow 1mbps upload speed. Before with jus the telus modem i only got like 512k and never passed 1mbps. I am running latest saurom and live in a pretty decent coverage area too, i also have it set to hspa only. Any reasons why mine suck??
Glad it worked out for you. Now where did u get that build.prop file? I don't remember seeing one with a .test at the end. Was it one of tomin's?
I also had the build prop.test and ill try and replace the original one and see what happens.
---------- Post added at 10:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:38 PM ----------
Yes the buld prop.test was one of tommins.

I know right I've tried almost everything. I dont want to have to give up my note because of such slow speeds. Trying a different blaze modem right now. Praying it works.

Do me a favor, and try this. It's gonna suck cause your gonna have to start over but this is my setup. I get 10Mbps downloads. I wanna know if its my combo that works for others.
This ROM = http://mirror10.downloadandroidrom.com/download/GalaxyNote/roms/SauromICSROM/SAUROM_XLA2_RC4a.zip?token=884590944
This Modem = http://bayfiles.com/file/6FwV/WrxD5a/Blaze_4G_LB7_radio_ATTNOTE.zip
This build.prop = http://www.2shared.com/file/yulMhKVb/build.html
someone try it out and let me know.
the build i used can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1573568
did wonders for me, once again though you'll probably want to revert to the stock build.prop, as well as remembering to clear cache...
just to make sure i think i've covered all areas i will once again say what im running
latest saurom
stock build.prop
modem listed in above link
beats audio mod (i HIGHLY doubt this has anything to do with it)
i should mention that yes, in my previous post i only went up to 3.3 or 3.4mbps with the current setup, but that's the fastest in my area atm...
and as far as the reception issue, well honestly, quality of service and reception are two totally different things, so im not sure if what i said about reception was really worth anything
anyways this seems to have worked for me really well so far, will test for another 24 hours, if i feel anyhting is up, i'll post

While it may seem like (and very well may BE) a stupid question, I'm not 200% sure one way or the other.. until recently I guess. Read on..
Last night I flashed to DCD's 2.10 ROM with 3.27 radio and go to test Google Maps. I see "GPS Activated", but nothing's picked up, no satellites. This seems like it would mean I'm probably NOT working with a Rev A ROM.
Well then I go from the regular old IE/PIE to Opera Mini 4 Beta 2 and speed test from dslreports.com/stest & mobilespeedtest.com... From dslreports I get "too fast/unstable" (whereas before, with PIE it would load "fine" and average about 600kbps) and from mobilespeedtest.com I get *2.35Mbps* (which I don't think is right/even possible. is it?)
I guess the ultimate question is - Is DCD's 2.10 ROM with 3.27 Radio running EVDO Rev A/GPS or not? Again, I know this seems stupid, and probably is, but this is place to come ask questions so I figured why not. Also, is it really possible that I was getting 2.35Mbps? I've tested a few other times with some read higher (2.6Mbps) and some a little lower (2.2Mbps) but I just don't trust it
well, theoretically, it's possible that you're getting those speeds. I personally doubt it, but it's impossible to say for 100% certain.
on the GPS thing: the first time, it takes a long time (some say as long as 20 minutes) to get the fix the first time, since it has to download a lot of data from the GPS sattelites to get a fix. some have better luck doing that outside. for me, it worked inside, but it did take a long time the first time, and then it all started working.
However, I don't like to harp on a repeating admonition, if you'll go back the last few days you'll find a plethora of posts on the subject that will tell you a lot more than I can in one short post.
So, short answer: Yes, you have Rev A and GPS, but you may not notice amazing speed differences with Rev A because it depends on the infrastructure of the local station and the GPS takes some time to initialize to start with. After the first time it'll get better.
My understanding is that Opera Mini uses a proxy to optimize data for mobile devices, so you're likely to get false speed test results through Opera Mini. PIE or Opera Mobile will give you more realistic speed test results.
Any other thoughts on this?
The leaked ROM that DCD is based on includes GPS. It doesn't include Rev A. The official release is supposed to include both, but Sprint has had unexpected difficulty with Rev. A, so we'll see.

RevA is part of the 3.27 radio, not DCD's roms. The new ones won't work WITHOUT 3.27, but that's where you're getting RevA

OK, thank you. But are there any browsers (not using proxies - Opera) that'll fully utilize Rev A and not crash? I love Opera, you just can't play YouTube/flash videos. And while you CAN play those videos through PIE (and I have no issues playing them), the browser itself stalls out and is very slow and clunky.
REV-A and you;-)
The best way to tell if you are on REV-A is to install WMWIFIRouter and ICS or tether to your PC in some way, and go to speakeasy.net/speedtest and run your tests. You may not even be in a REV-A coverage area, but if so then your download will not change so much but your upload will be above 200k or more if signal is good. REV-0 upload speed is max 153.6k, REV-A is 1.8meg.

Correct, Alltel implemented Michigan EVDO as one of their first, before the DOM-A card was released, and the later markets like Louisiana and Kansas much later, after the DOM-a release, so they got DOM-A cards but did not have VER 4.01.106 Nortel software/firmware yet to put in them so they were REV-0 anyway but upgradeable. I am not sure which newer markets have updated as it is available now cause we are on 5 in VZW land. I am sure Michigan will swap their DOMs in but bet they have not yet, so you are right.
P.S. I know this stuff because I was NT NI and put most of it in ;-)
I am in a Rev. A area (Austin, TX) and have no speed increase, nor have I heard of anyone with a confirmed speed increase. Where is the evidence that people are getting Rev. A speeds? If you are, please post a screenshot. I know the official release is supposed to include Rev. A, but I've seen no evidence that the leaked version actually does. My speed tests have been consistent with what I was getting prior to the new ROMs, and others have reported the same.
You have to take into account that you're using RF not a direct connection, and that those max speeds include overhead and not raw data throughput. Rev A isn't some magical speed increase, it relies on your signal to the tower. Just like how you can get less than 54Mbps on 802.11g due to signal conditions, you can get less than the maximum data rate with EVDO.
In fact you can never actually get 54Mbps, just like you'll never really get 3Mbps+ with Rev A. Rev A actually builds directly of Rev 0 and adds some new modulation techniques that are used in conditions where the signal is good enough.
Then, you still can't be sure your phone is provisioned for Rev A, which it probably isn't because your carrier does not officially support that service on your phone yet.

I am on Sprint. I am in one of the first areas that deployed Rev. A. I speed tested my EVDO connection before & after the upgrade with no discernible difference. The most noticeable speed increase with Rev. A should be on the upload, which has not changed at all. In fact, nothing has. This issue has been discussed across multiple forums and still not one person has posted evidence that this ROM activates Rev. A. Again, I'm not trying to be argumentative, but can you point me to any evidence that this ROM contains Rev. A? Sprint never said this leaked early build contains Rev A, only that the release build would. People assume it does because the release build was promised to, but all those that have tested it that I'm aware of have not shown a speed increase, either in upload or download speeds.
From the Engadget Mobile article about the leaked ROM: "Rev. A -- a feature promised by Sprint to be enabled at some point in the future when the Mogul was first released -- is also apparently going to be prominently featured when this update officially hits, but it's either flaky or switched off altogether in this particular build while the devs are still hammering out some last-minute issues." Just as I said in my first post in this thread.
Source: http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/26/new-sprint-mogul-rom-leaks-out-gps-support-and-all/
It is important to note that if you are using Opera Mobile for your speed tests the results will be misleading as Opera Mobile uses an intermediate server and then renders a "view" of your webpage and transmits it to your phone. So when you speed test using Opera you are speed testing the intermediate server NOT your phone.

Yes, IT WILL WORK BUT!!! the Vibrant will only use 1 of the 2 bands that ATT uses for 3g service... So if you don't live in the northeast or a heavily populated area, you may be knocked to edge service for most of the time.
Once unlocked it will stay unlocked no matter what you do, so if you upgrade to CM7 nightly or MIUI for example you will still be unlocked.
I bought my now ex-girlfriend a vibrant a while back and unlocked it for ATT use.. Since we live right next to NYC service was always 3g and the phone always worked great... She loved it until we broke up and I took it back.
You're going to get mad when you realize that the captivate is going to recieve an official GB update while there is still no word on the Vibrant (not even a damn leak)
But he will have a great running cm7 on it though on his vibrant! which is way better then the stock gb

Yes, but I hear the CM7 port for the Captivate is a bit more functional than the one for the Vibrant. STUPID VIBRANT GPS!
well i'm kinda bummed about my vibrant right now.. like the phone it self alot more then my captivate.. seems snappier the capacitive buttons work ALOT better.. but.. the killer for it (did not know this before hand) is the 3g service i live in a small town in california.. just got 3g service january 1st of this year.. and its been SOOOO nice to have it.. the vibrant will work on the 3g at my house with no problem.. but at work (about 4 miles away) it can only get it to pick up 3g in 1 or 2 places there and the signal is so weak (0 bars) it wont really work where as my captivate will be sitting on 3-4 bars of 3g.. also was noticing my edge signal was quite a bit worse also.. capticate getting 4-5 bars vibrant getting 2-3 bars (i tried a few modems kb1,kb5,ka7.. and 1 more dont remember.. all seemed to be the same for me..
this wouldnt be so much of a problem but i work 12 hours graveyard shifts and get quite a bit of time to mess with my phone... streaming music while i work or streaming netflix of break (get 5 30minute breaks a night)
and as for CM7.. i tried it on my captivate and nook and didnt care for it that much
so right now i'm not sure what i'm gonna do with the vibrant...

Vibrant doesn't fully support AT&T 3G... I think you might be able to enable the 850mhz band (combi bands?) which helps some, off by default on the Vibrant. But ultimately, it doesn't support all of AT&T's 3g bands so the experience won't be as reliable. EDGE connection should be the same though.
i've come up with a fix for the roaming issue on CM7 and CM9 for Electrify users. download the file attachment below. extract the file from the zip and then replace it with the current one in the /system/lib directory. then reboot. you can select between automatic and home only now! no need to restore the stock rom to fix it. this replacement file fixes it completely
there is no force roaming with this fix.
may have to test this out on sprint, see if it will allow us to connect as normal.. if it does i see no reason why not to include it as official so that electrify owners dont have to bother with extra flashes
That's very kind of you!

@shabbypenguin Let me know how this works out for you! I'm very curious if it will work on the Photon.
@roundeye1987 you only need to do it once! then you're good to go! although if you change to a new update of either rom you will need to replace the file again.
well im pleased to say that it works fine enough for what i can test for...
unfortunatly no matter what setting i change etc etc i cant get 3g in cm9 so idk if that works with it... but i know 1x and voice/sms works fine
however there may be a time that the bootloader/4g issue gets fixed, and if so then we are gunna be working non stop to get 4g working in cm. if we can pull that off then it may come to ifnd out that this ril (gunna guess is from the electrify) may not work with 4g. if thats the case then it will have to be a seperate downloadable flash again. but for now ill swap it out in my hatif i compile anything electrify owners with have this fix baked in
Excellent.. Thanks very much.

unfortunatly no matter what setting i change etc etc i cant get 3g in cm9 so idk if that works with it... but i know 1x and voice/sms works fine
however there may be a time that the bootloader/4g issue gets fixed, and if so then we are gunna be working non stop to get 4g working in cm. if we can pull that off then it may come to ifnd out that this ril (gunna guess is from the electrify) may not work with 4g. if thats the case then it will have to be a seperate downloadable flash again. but for now ill swap it out in my hatif i compile anything electrify owners with have this fix baked in

there could be a problem with 3g for photon users. glad to see it at least works for you! i do get 1x and 3g along with everything else being fully functional in terms of the radio. thanks for testing it!
Stock doesnt show 1x it pretends its 3g. To know what you really have on stock you have to look on the about phone then status. Some people are just noticing they have been on 1x and not 3g. I think it was a crappy move by sprint to lie this way.

Here is a way to fix the issue, but I dont know if you can do it on a locked phone.

This guide was from a Samsung Moment, so the code line locations might be a little different. I cant figure out how to properly edit a smali file, so I haven't been able to test it on a stock rooted photon.

i've come up with a fix for the roaming issue on CM7 and CM9 for Electrify users. download the file attachment below. extract the file from the zip and then replace it with the current one in the /system/lib directory. then reboot. you can select between automatic and home only now! no need to restore the stock rom to fix it. this replacement file fixes it completely
there is no force roaming with this fix.

now i just need to get it into a flashable zip.
Does the PRL matter with this file? When I switch automatic I can't seem to get anything better than 1x. It could be my location but I am in a heavily populated big red area.

the prl does matter. i'm assuming it's your location and the location of the roaming cell site that's making you have a 1X signal.
check out jokers results with this running on the photon.

Would it be possible to get this working on the Electrify? I am using it right now to allow roaming but I can not get it to force roaming when set to automatic. Automatic actually works as automatic and stays non roaming until I leave US Cellular towers. If there was a simple way to force roaming I would be sooo happy.
Thanks!
Im a little confused because I can go between Home and Automatic just fine on CM9 already

This feature is/has been implemented in CM9 Alpha Builds since Alpha 11. So using "adding" this to CM9(assuming your on a relatively new verison..) is a waste of time. And i think that Sprint will limit you to 1x roaming by default PRL, youll need to flash a business PRL to get 3g roaming in certain areas. For me in North Florida atleast I was unable to roam with 3g until I flashed a business PRL that allowed it.
Nope I get roaming 3g

I was talking with a Sprint rep the other day and mnentioned Sense 5 coming to the EVO LTE. He said it won't happen. He didn't credit any resources for his answer but I don't remember 100% what he was saying. Something about the EVO LTE not being able to handle Sense 5. I then told him it was ported to this phone and the only things that are a bit screwey (that I know of) are Blinkfeed, Bluetooth, and data connection.
Has anyone else asked or heard anything about such things? In my opinion, HTC should take out Blinkfeed and throw us a Sense 5 update.
If I recall correctly, the only issue I had while running Sense 5 was no Bluetooth. I don't remember having any Blinkfeed or connection issues. YMMV
Hopefully the Sprint rep didn't know what he was talking about

I had connection issues with every flash combination I tried. WiFi would constantly turn off and on. Data would no constantly disconnect and connect. Blinkfeed just doesn't look scaled correctly. It looks kind of gross. Lol. But hopefully we'll see something.

Did that more times than I can remember. Tried different firmwares, different radio, different wipes, superwipes, even wiped internal and external storage, installed - booted - restarted - flashed - rebooted even, lol. I've tried it all. Nothing works for me. I've tried switching from different ROM's while preforming different scenarios. I get the same result no matter what I do. But every other ROM works just fine. Even reprogramming with the ##dialer codes did nothing for me. This happened on my other EVO LTE too (this is my replacement). I'm starting to wonder if I'm Sense 5 retardant or something. Hahahaha.

I'd take a Sprint reps word with a grain of salt. It's obvious he doesn't know what he's talking about given the fact we have a 99.9% functioning port for our phones. Only issues I've ever had are a couple of camera functions, which the devs are aware of. I don't use Bluetooth so it's not a deal breaker for me.

I tend not to listen to them in general. Otherwise, NJ would have 4G since last December, and both my wife and I would have refurbished phones.
They claimed that her GS3 had water damaged when it wouldn't boot past the final boot screen. Fixed it by calling Samsung directly, who told me to factory reset. I then rooted and updated to avoid the "Sudden Death Syndrome" that the 16gb Sprint version of the GS3 suffers.
My phone list signal, and they couldn't figure it out (they didn't really try. He restarted the phone once, went to settings, and gave up.) I went home, flashed the newest firmware, and voila! Good as new. In both cases, I put the refurb phones back into the package and mailed them right back.
Long story short, question EVERYTHING that they tell you. You probably have more knowledge, anyway. They only sell phones to blindsided customers who Le looking at the pretty screens.

Every phone is different for reasons that I'll never understand. Blinkfeed and data work perfectly for me with absolutely no issues. I don't use BT at all, so our phone's Sense 5 port is pretty much flawless as far as I'm concerned.
But then I try an AOSP rom, and my phone turns into a turd. And not even one of those good turds where you don't really even have to wipe. My phone hates AOSP, and meanwhile I'm reading the forums and everyone using CM or Liquid or Carbon or etc. is just LOVING the rom and it runs great for them. Meanwhile I feel like I'm using a Froyo phone from 2010. When I go back to Sense 5, everything is better.
I dunno man. Sorry to hear it's not working as well for you.

I've had zero signal issues phones entire life on 4.3 however since upgrading to K.K it's been awful like honestly terrible. I have areas in my house now where I have zero service period, never had that problem before. Also ongoing not a one night thing.
Happens on multiple KK based roms not just one example, also tried NC2, NC4 and now back on MJE radio and signal still sucks... is anyone else experiencing this? It was fine on 4.3 then out of the blue turned to crap
Also WiFi / Bluetooth have been flawless just cell radio in general sucks now, not just 4G either I barely get 3g anymore in areas and can't even send text messages
Same here
I have been dealing with the same thing. I can't ever remember having any issues with any Verizon device in the areas that I normally travel. Since taking the update, I run into problems everywhere. Almost to the point where I want to go to a different phone.
Same. Exact. Thing. Here.

I can't remember where I found it but there is a build prop edit to tweak the radios. I did it 3 months ago and it has stuck through the kk update to nc3. Try Google samsung galaxy note 3 radio tweak or poor signal. Sorry I can't remember.

Go to this site. Download all of the radios. But I am going to say that the MJE radio will be the one that will give you back your consistent connection. You will need Odin. If you end up having any difficult time downloading any of the items off this address. I could send you everything via drive or what not. Just hit me up in a PM. I just have to figure out how to turn on PM notifications. Otherwise I will forget to check if I have any. Any way, hope this works for you. Also, to the person that posted the idea about there being some kind of tweak to the build prop, try to find that link and post it here. Reason being is that the newer radios enable the newest higher frequency bands. And allows for greater speeds. But, obviously they suck. So if I could get the newer radio and make the phone get better signal and not drop network. Than I would rather do that. As I am sure others here would as well. And assuming those others have Root on their devices. Any way, I am just rambling on. I'm off to bed. I have to go to work soon and then get home so as can drop the sub frame on my car to replace my rear motor mount.

I've been on the MJE radio. You can find the MJE modem tar in the Verizon Note 3 Android Development section, the post is by BeansTown106.
Regardless of what people say about modems and signal, etc.. NC2 and NC4 were subpar for me. MJE is stable and I get excellent signal and data speeds.

I have noticed a difference between how KitKat and Jelly Bean handle radios. In 4.3, the phone would quickly get a mobile data connection (i.e. working data, as shown by the solid white 1X/3G/4G symbol in the status bar) on any network type and even at very low signals. Since KitKat, the phone does not want to connect to data on 3G as much or 1X most of the time. It will just stay there with the connection type grayed out (indicating no data) even though the signal could be 3 bars.
As I had only upgraded to NC2, the phone is back on MJE and will likely remain there unless what is after KK doesn't break more stuff (like VPN, which is still broken on Samsung devices). After rolling back to MJE I can confirm that radio performance is equally bad (or good) as before I updated to KK.
The GF is using my Note 3 and works in a very low signal area (flips between an unusable 1 bar of 3G, 1-2 bars of 1X, and no signal). Other devices like Moto phones and the 5S get 1 bar of LTE there or 3 bars of 3G, and there are people even tethering away. She can't call, send/receive texts, or do anything else so it is useless at work.
Hey guys thank you for all the replys and I will definitely take a look at the responses more in depth when I have a moment.
Just some things I've noticed
It's not just me, apparently there is a lot of feedback of others with the same issue
I HAVE swapped modem files specifically all while staying on a KK based rom I've tried NC2 NC4 and now MJE radio and they all suck when using the KK software even though the MJE radio was fine on 4.3 for me
Given that others are reporting it, I find it hard to believe that my phone is defective / hardware related and it must be something in the firmware/KK specifically
It's gotten to a point where I need to take immediate action. My wife called me this morning and I was not even notified, my phone never rang period and I have nothing in my call logs but my phone was on the entire day with, quote fingers, ""signal"" and this never happened previous. God forbid something bad happened and she is unable to reach me due to a software defect. That is a BIG deal, I didn't even know she tried to call me 4 times in a row until she got home later that night and asked why I didn't pick up, I said what do you mean? It never rang
I'm debating on going back to 4.3 as a whole until the issue is identified and resolved unless any other solutions come out... I'm all about having fun and flashing roms but when my wife can't reach me when she needs me and I get ripped a new asshole things need to stop lol

this is not a solution but thought i would post what happened to me.
had N3 since launch and no signal issues
upgraded to KK Stock NC2 leak and had no signal issues
upgraded to NC4 firmware to fix reboot issue for recovery etc.. and HAD signal issues - BAD "No mobile Network" where it used to work perfectly
tried MJE Radio switched back and forth and all over and had signal issues still
tried a full NAND restore and complete factory reset and still had signal issues
ordered a replacement that came with MJE and NO signal issues - worked like it was working on release date
upgraded to NC4 Jasmine rom and did the NC4 firmware upgrade again - worried i would have same results but NO signal issue
now can switch to any KK rom with my NC4 and NO signal issue
i can not explain why the NC4 upgrade killed my release date N3 signal and the replacement N3 has no issues but something has to be related to me getting a newer device is all i can guess
Just wanted to say I'm in the same boat. Since updating my signal has been abysmal and it's killing my battery. I even got a new Sim card, no change. These radios really suck.
I actually hated MJE, such a horrible radio. I'm actually running hyperdrive with MJ7 and loving the signal quality. Though I specifically use MJ7 since I had the best signal for Band 4 with it. I thought NC2 was okay, but I tried it out only for a few hours once I found out you could change radios.

This is something that has been bothering me on these boards. The definition of firmware is applied 3 ways and nobody references which way they are using the term.
Firmware seems to mean any or all of these 3 when in most cases it is firmware=bootloader/modem
1. To all of the software as a whole
2. To just the bootloader
3. To just the os, rom, distro of android
Now I have seen you here quite often and know your not a noob when it comes to this but...
You upgraded to the nc2 bootloader you would have used odin to do this.
you then odin the nc4 bootloader to fix an issue with ss (does not make much sense as you needed to wait for a new version of SS for this to be fixed...work around being reboot the phone then click recovery in the 10 second boot window)
you switched modems nothing fixed it
you then did a nand restore which would have only restored the /system, /data, /cache partitions not the /boot odin would be required to change that
It seems to me that your other phone had a bad bootloader flash.
