[Q] .21 nightmare - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I've had nothing but problems with the newest update. The camera shows up green and grainy and sometimes not responding at all. Google store not responding periodically. The same periodic non response with ADW Launcher EX. Any ideas or suggestions on what to do? Please help! !!

factory reset will help... try it

First try software reset or restart. I had problems after update. 21 but after restart all is flawless.

Sending for repairs
Called Asus support on Saturday. Only took 2 minuted to actually talk to someone. Sending to repair following issues:
1. Camera green and grainy.
2. Wifi weakness
3. GPS weakness.
Shipped the prime out today. Hope to get back in 2 weeks.
Will update with results.

Did you end up trying the soft reset and factory reset to see if it would help?

I think this problem might have started occurring just before the .21 update.
I recall doing a soft reset twice to rectify the problem and it did work. But the problem kept recurring and a soft and factory reset would not solve the problem thereafter. I also noticed the first column furthest to the left on my screen would be grainy, at least while I was using ADW Launcher EX. I probably would not have sent the prime for repair if it was not for the camera issue. The support rep was very informative and concluded it was a hardware issue based on the symptoms. But now I am trying to kill 3 birds with one stone by dealing with the GPS and WiFi issues as well.
Wifi strength is satisfactory to very good but hope they can strengthen it.
GPS is an interesting issue. I can lock into as many as 13 satellites on a good day but the locks never last enough to using the GPS for navigation purposes. The rep I talked to seems to think Asus has come out with extended pegs/pins to assure optimal connectivity. I will just have to wait and see if this solves those problems.
As mentioned in the previous post, I am quite impressed with the Asus Support thus far. One quick call (no longer than 2 minutes to talk to a rep !!) and I got the ball rolling. I truly love my prime and hope they can solve the problems in a timely fashion.

increased random reboots on .21

I know some other people were having this problem a couple of ota's back, but the random reboots are increasingly happening. Anyone else having this problem on .21? Any known fixes? Thanks for any support/help

So what I really don't get is the incredible mix of results in the field to updates. I realize that there are infinite variables as far as installed software, system settings, environmental conditions (Temp, WiFi signal, router type, etc.) but from my observations, including results with my 2 TFP's and the posted results, it appears that:
For every new FW roll out, the following things will happen. 100% of the time:
1. Your WiFi Signal strength and throughput will get better
2. Or it will get worse - # of affected units vary, but we can tell exactly, just by estimating (LOL) Seems to affect roughly 50% of units in the field.
3. Your WiFi + Bluetooth streaming will get better (Unless it gets worse, which happens on half of the units affected bt the update.
4. It will stay the same. Exactly. This seems to NOT be affected by whether you had ****ty WiFi or Great WiFi.
5. Your GPS will come back after losing it in the last update. Or it will go away, if you got it back on the last update. Or it will stay the same, which is to say, it STILL works like ****, even if you can, for 9 seconds lock onto 14 out of 18.
I mean, Asus has ASSURED us that there are NO rolling hardware revisions. Even though a Support MANAGER, high enough up the food chain to have some real power told me my 2nd Prime "Had the new Hardware" Then again, he told my the GPS - THAT THEY TESTED ON THIS UNIT would be at LEAST as good as my TF101 was. (It isn't)
Why WOULD Asus admit new hardware was in place, even if it was? With the returns they are getting on these (less than 1%... ih, shuuure) could you picture the run on returns when folks caught wind of new hardware? For each Serial # revision, we see a slew of "Anything different?" questions. Picture someone saying, oh yeah: Wifi is off the charts, and the added 5 Ghz radio, and GPS works! It would be a feeding frenzy/bloodbath for folks to get the "NEW" ones..
Ahh well, all this is old news, been said time and again. Also when new users hit these forums, I kind of feel sorry for them, knowing the same old crew is gonna pounce on them with their positions and tell the poor noob what to love, what to hate, why the Prime is the best device ever since the dawn of time / worst POS that anyone ever sold... Man, I hope they are made out of taffy, cause they are in for some MAJOR being pulled in dif. directions.
Okay then. /Rant over
I understand completely what you are ranting about, but buggy wifi, bluetooth, gps doesn't really bother me. What I'm wondering about is less about hardware specs and more about these random reboots i got after the .19 update. Just wondering if anyone knows an effective fix...

Okay, this should fix you up.
So, .19 - Thats obviously not US. Is the .21 we received here in USA available to you? If not and you are on the latest available FW, do what I did when .15 gave me issues: Roll back your FW. Using the instructions in this thread, you can roll back to whatever FW was trouble free for you. As I said, ALL versions were okay for me with mixed success but no major bugs like reboots.
Note you WILL need to root to roll back, but then you can choose to root again or stay unrooted. If you need a quick, easy root, use the Sparky Root apk that doesn't even require a PC to root!
Install any version (ICS, Honeycomb, change SKUs) to your Transformer Prime:

EDIT: LOL - I just noticed you DID the .21 update, but you said .19 in your post, probably thinking about what it was predicted to be for weeks before they actually rolled it at .21
yeah sorry... it was the previous one before .21. Just assumed it was .19 . okay yeah i am rooted and in the U.S. with .21 thought there might have been an easier fix where i could be on the current version but i guess not. It hasn't rebooted lately, maybe it just needed time to settle. Thanks for your help!

reboots steps found
Hi,
I have managed to reproduce random reboots on my unit.
I'm running a TW unit on .21
1. Install TED from market place
2. Play any video, the one I used is Lucy McRae: How can technology transform the human body?
3. Pause the video
4. Wait for 5 minutes. I set my Transformer screen timeout to be 2 minutes
5. Press power again to activate the device and try to resume the video
6. 8 out of 10 times, my transformer will hang and reboot
Can anyone confirm this any other .21? Thank you!
I got a few random reboots after the update, but now they don't really happen from what I've noticed.
1. Backed up my app using the built in app backup tool
2. Factory reset
3. Installed TED and tried to play the same video, no hangs/reboots now
4. Tried to restore apps, tells me FAILED?!!?!?
-.-"
5. To restore all apps and try TED again.
Mine has been working fine since i got it up to the latest update wifi is strong and gps locks(not that i really use it).
There is actually a known issue with the TED app. They will need to update the app to resolve the issue on our primes.
It happens not only with TED but almost all other video players too. As long as I put it to sleep, once I try to resume the video, it hangs n reboots. It drove me nuts.
But I did a factory reset today (refer to the earlier post), and I haven't been reproduce the problem again. I will monitor for the next 7 days.
In the past 7 days, I had 3 reboots, all video related. From TED to DicePlayer etc.
I also do alot of surfing and run some apps, these do not encounter reboots.

Wifi issues, random reboots and launcher crashes...

I did some searching and did not see much on this. Also, I've sent multiple PMs to Gary Key over the past month without one reply back. I have a BC0KAS Prime and as of the last update have had nothing but frustrating issues. To preface, this device is not unlocked or rooted and is using the latest firmware available.
Here are issues I'm seeing:
1. Launcher crashes multiple times per day.
2. Poor Wifi performance.
3. Random reboots (usually happens 1-2 times per week)
4. After inserting the GPS dongle, the device keeps rebooting.
If some of these issues are not common and hardware related, I suppose I can do an RMA. Although, I'm not impressed with the reviews I've read on this process to date. Otherwise, I suppose I will have to wait for the next firmware update.
For those familiar with the process, what do you recommend the right course of action should be?
Thanks for your advice.

me too
I'm afraid I have no experience of the RMA process, but I too have had more reboots since the .21 update. I now also suffer from problems connecting to my WIFI that I didn't have prior to the update.
Since not many others appear to be running into the same issues, it appears an RMA may be in order. Hopefully, they can repair or replace the device with a short turn around.

Same issues
I also have a BCOKAS model and since the update I have had a lot more issues than previously - lots of random reboots and reduced performance on WiFi and battery life.
I have contacted Asus directly and told that the new update will fix the issue so i guess i just put up with the problem til then?
Also waiting for usb dongle - hopefully will get from submitted to shipped one day but not holding my breath
Mine prime reboots atleast onece or twice a day and youtube crashes multiple times in some day I also have a bcokas serial number. Its becoming unusable.

Yea, I suppose our choices are limited at this point. I am very dissapointed that Gary Key never responded to my multiple PMs on the issue. I suppose that's par for the course with ASUS...

Before this thread gets closed, my prime also reboots. The only way I got it to stop was downgrading to Honeycomb where I was able to run it 9 days with only one reboot. I don't offer that as a solution just as an option. I purchased my prime with ICS already on it and sarted getting reboots after about two weeks. So I let it upgrade to ICS again to see if there is any OTA of ics that would not reboot my machine yesterday, and this morning I have had one reboot after watching a youtube video.
It leads me to think that it has more to do with ICS than a hardware defect with the prime. I also had a little better wifi on HC or shall I say it was consistent all over my house, not the case under ICS. A google search will show that reboots are common with ICS across many devices, again it not just the prime. Just my 2 pennies.
Mine used to reboot after going to .21 but mainly during browsing. Not sure which helped but I removed all browser cept stock and uninstalled flash. Rebooted and just installed flash. Didn't bother with the other browsers. Another thing I did was disable force gpu in the setting> development.

Transformer Prime Shutting Down quite frequently and takes a while for it to turn on.

Hey, I've got a persistent and annoying problem with the Transformer Prime like what other people have previously experienced.
The prime constantly shuts down automatically and sometimes require a power outlet or a computer to help boot it up. I have read that an OTA firmware update was released earlier this year to fix this issue but it hasn't fixed anything for my own. I've tried searching up solutions on google but I have not come across anything to fix it and there are no recent posts on it.
I am just wondering if there is an actual fix for this problem and how is that possible? Do people still get this issue and how do they manage it or if they know the cause of it? And does Asus Warranty cover this kind of problem. I am thinking of taking it to the service centre in Sydney, Australia to see if they can do anything about it. Has anyone used the warranty cover to replace or either fix the issue?
Quite disappointed with this... if it wasn't for the glitches when I first got the tablet and the ever-so-often shutting down of the tablet randomly, this would have been an awesome tablet
Hope to hear from all you guys soon! Thanks!
P.S. Also performed a factory reset to see if it erased the problem but it didnt.

[Q] Screen backlight flickering updates

Hello,
I'm looking to figure out if anybody has found a software fix for the issue of screen backlight flickering on our phones. I've hunted down some threads through Google, but found nothing except 'go replace your phone and hope for the best.'
As a reminder, when grays are displayed onscreen (as in Play store loading screen), it seems as though the screen refresh rate can't 'keep up' with those colors. To me, the problem is even more noticeable when viewing pictures in the Gallery - seriously, I feel like I'm watching one of those 3D movies, and my eyes and head start to hurt! It's just enough that it drives me crazy, but other people do also seem to notice it, so I'm not just ACTUALLY going nuts. This problem showed up on stock before I rooted and went MeanROM, so I know it's not my fault. The problem is worse at higher brightness levels, and persists even with manual brightness settings on.
So yeah, anyone else have this problem? Any stories of successfully resolving it? I'm still within my Sprint 30-day replacement period, but already got 3rd-party insurance on my phone, so it'll be interesting to try to get a replacement phone insured under the same policy...
Yep have had this problem for a while now and actually got tired of it this morning and will take my phone back for a replacement whenever I have time! Gets so annoying especially noticing it in the littlest of places.

Whoa, please let me know if your replacement is any better after a day or two of playing with it. I will probably do the same if there's an improvement.
Was on meanROM 4.2 until today, when I relocked and unrooted in preparation for getting a replacement at Sprint (I'm still within my 30 days). I was going to replace the phone because of this exact problem - a weird, barely-perceptible strobe effect when viewing grays and looking at certain photos in the gallery. And now - after all the hard work of finding an RUU for 2.13, figuring out the android SDK, learning how to use ADB (not to mention the whole initial unlock/twrp bootloader shebang) - I find that the screen flicker has dropped off. OK, sometimes there's an extremely brief (~150ms) hint of it all on a gray screen, but absolutely nothing compared to the headache that it was before. I'd recommend completely unrooting/relocking your phone and pushing the correct RUU. QBking77's the best for it - look up his youtube vids on android sdk intstallation/usage, then relocking your bootloader, then unrooting/installing an RUU. Remember to clear your Google Wallet first, and set your fastboot to off (under power settings). After relocking your bootloader, you might notice that you cannot boot past it. That's fine; just push your RUU with fastboot USB. You'll know what I mean after watching the vids.
After all that, if your results were like mine, you'll know it actually had something to do with your custom ROM. I have no idea how that is possible, as I seem to recall a flickering in my stock ROM, too, but I guess I was wrong. Perhaps it has something to do with my charge status, and I'll see the issue come back... who knows?
For relocking/unrooting
Step 1: Android SDK setup
Step 2: Relock the bootloader
Step 3: Unroot/Push RUU (for some reason, I had to go straight to pushing RUU from step 2 without booting into any ROM).
From all my scouring online, though, I've noticed that the people most consistently hammered with this problem (especially on screens other than photos in the Gallery or gray colors in the battery histogram of power settings) have build issues with their screens. These include light leak seeming to emanate in bands fanning up out of the home 'button' or graphical issues. These people usually report a fix to the problem once they receive a replacement; the ones with my problems typically complained of having received up to 3 (!) phones in a row with the maddening flicker, suggesting a software issue. It seems that the HTC One X itself was plagued with these problems, with graphical glitches also entering the mix, but an OTA fix a month ago or so minimized issues.
Lemme know how things go... I still have 4 days or so to return my phone if the flicker comes back, haha.
I had to get my phone replaced. sadly for me it was a hardware failture. check google maps and see if it the graphics flicker there, of if the background on minecraft main screne flickers in and out

Yeah, woke up this morning and problem was back in full force. I think it might be charge-dependent or temperature dependent (which makes sense if its an analog hardware component like a voltage regulator that's being futzy). I ended up replacing it, too, but Sprint charged me a bull**** $35 because I bought the phone at third-party reseller instead of a corporate store (god... damn... it). Anyway, my new (and refurb, btw) unit has absolutely no problems. Zero. Rooting and reinstalling meanROM now, haha. At least the store people acknowledged that they could also see the problem. Software scans turned up absolutely nothing, although Sprint says HTC does not allow them to open things up because it's a unibody phone, so it's still possible that my regulator was faulty.
Anyway, seems to me that it's a hardware problem having to do with a particular batch of phones. Strange, since my new phone is a 0003 hardware revision, just like my last...
Went today for my 3rd time trying to get a replacement because of this issue and not to mention I got denied a replacement when I was in my 14 grace day period I went in 2 times after that today being the 2nd and I asked for a replacement, I then have to wait for the "tech" to look at it...waited 1 hour to get told it phone has no problems we ran all the tests and passed, me really confused asked her do you even know what the problem is? She replies no....I then am like WTF. I tell her about my issue and try shwowing her and somehow doesn't notice it. Then asks 5 other people and they notice it and then they replace my screen? After I wait another hour (caused me to be late to work) then once done it actually fixed the problem completely, go home to find out she broke my speaker and my sd card won't mount! Drop it off and picked it up and all is fixed. I know want to terminate my contract cuz sprint has been giving me Shi**y customer service since day one! Someone who works at sprint plz help me!

[Q] GPS problems

My phone has serious GPS issues. It usually takes about a minute to get a hot fix under ideal conditions, sometimes the phone would lose the fix or not get it at all. When I visited South America below the equator, the GPS didn't work at all. Once it even got me in a tense situation with a dishonest taxi driver. Since I noticed that problem several months ago I flashed ZV9 with factory reset, it didn't help. Is this a known problem?
wow... seriously no replies? I have had serious issues with my GPS as well. I have sent it to LG TWICE to fix the issue. I took screen caps and gave detailed evidence of the problem. I am still analyzing the latest "repair" they did but I am not so sure thus far.
I think this phone is just a POS.
The second time in for repair seems to be holding thus far. You may have to do the same with yours. Be explicitly clear of the problem and provide screen capture evidence (as I did). Otherwise, you may just have someone say they "fixed the camera" or something else that never had a problem.
