[Q] What's the difference between The Note with/without contract?! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hi everyone,
I bought the Note before 5 days from AT&T but I have question need their answers.
Q1/ If I get the phone without contract, will the internet work or not? (3G or 4G or both?)
Q2/ If yes, can I break my contract and take back some of my money? (the price with contract is $800 and without contract is $600 or $700, so I may get back $100-$200)
Q/ How much the warranty for 1 year?
Thank you

What?
Q1: if you mean you buy it, and you're not on AT&T at all, of coarse mobile data won't work...you won't have a service contract.... If you man just buying it out right, as am early upgrade while you're on AT&T, then yes it'll work. You'd most likely need to get an lte Sim card.
The price on contract, which means upgrading your phone and signing for a new contact, or a brand new customer is 300... Off contract, meaning no discount at all from AT&T is 700.
No you can't cancel your contract and return the phone for more than you paid for it. And in fact you will be charged an early termination fee for canceling the contact. So you'd lose money.
AT&T has been around the block more than a couple times.... You really think you could pull one over on them so easily?
Warranty is from Samsung, not AT&T and is included with the purchase of the device.

The reason people buy off contract is to not be locked into a provider. You can still have mobile data plan set up and pay on it each month, you're just not forced to pay them for 2 years and can cancel any time you wish.
If you don't have a mobile data plan through them your mobile data will not work.

If you've had the phone longer than 3 days cannot break the contact without paying the $250-350 fee it costs to do so.
If you've had it less than 3 days, you can break the contract without charge but you will still have to pay the balance of the phone (if you paid the reduced price of $300)
If you're not on contract, you can still use AT&T 4G service.

Thanks guys for answering my questions
my phone is in contract with them, and one of my friends told me go break your contract and get like $100 from them cuz the phone without contract is about $700 and with contract is $800, so if I break the contract they will give me back $100!!
Is that right?
and for the warranty, the seller told me to buy a warranty but I told him I don't need it, and there were no warranty in the bx by Samsung! How can I get a warranty?
I guess thats all what i have

Incorrect. It is 30 days to break the contract without the $325 termination fee. The 3 days you may be thinking about is to not get charged the activation/upgrade fee

Att.com shows pricing as 299.99 on contract, 649.99 off contract.
I decided to by one off contract for 475 shipped on eBay. I'm not up for early renewal until July and couldn't wait. I didn't want to "waste" my upgrade on a near 6 month old phone by that time.
You will not make any money off ATT, so don't try.
Without contract means no service unless you have existing service.
Btw, can I walk into the att store and just request an LTE sim? My current sim is only H+ enabled

Yes, and you can keep the unlimited plan if you have it.

yesterday I canceled my contract and my phone (everything)
they gave me the phone and the screen protector price immediately to my depit card and they told me I'll recieve the deposit cost in my mail withen 4-6 weeks ! :/
Now I'm thinking between buying the same phone ($660 with 2 years warranty from SquareTradeus) or waiting for new phone!!
What do you think?!

As usual, its always a nightmare dealing with their customer service. It took nearly 45 minutes of the ATT store manager being on the phone with them...and they still couldn't change my account to LTE unlimited. They ended up hanging up and stating they would work on it and call me back...which was true.
But i truly wish i could blow up ATT customer service.

erick161, as much as I agree with you, you might want to redact that last statement. threats online are taken even more seriously than in person from my experience.
OP, I think what you friend was trying to tell you is that you buy the phone on contract, you cancel the service and pay the termination fee and the cost of the phone and ETF was less than buying the phone at full price. Which was true in the beginning, but now the phone is cheaper and not really going to save/make you money.
If you already have AT&T then I'd say get the phone on contract or not. for the first time in almost 10 years I'm locked into a contract again, not too worried about it because i haven't left AT&T yet and don't plan to. if you aren't an AT&T customer, there's a company that resells AT&T network service for $45 a month unlimited everything, just no 4G or LTE. You could buy the phone and jump on that service.
Lastly if you didn't buy the phone for the size, the HTC One is coming out in the next few months, you might want to check that out, though if I recall for AT&T they're getting rid of the quad core because it isn't compatible with LTE, but that's what i recall and 100% ingrained in truth.

contract
You say the price with contract is $800. It's not, it's $300. So if you break contract, you will pay more for a phone, not less, but you can still get data if you are already with AT&T. Just go in, and add the phone to your line, and have them upgrade the sim. They charge like $36 for that now.

What model of Note is this? Sounds like one of the international ones to me. the AT&T one would not come with a HSPA+ only SIM I believe. If it is not an i717, then it probably has the Xenos(sp?) chipset, and not the Qualcomm one, and is NOT an LTE phone. Also, if it is an LTE phone, you may, or may not be in an area with LTE service.

[Q] Even More Plus Plan

This question is for anyone on the Even More Plus plan (non-contract plan) with T-Mobile. I gave T-Mobile a call today and a representative told me that I can upgrade my phone with a 2 year contract even though I'm on the Even more Plus plan. I think they're doing this because T-Mobile took away the non-contract plans. If you look on the T-Mobile website, you can no longer sign up for the Even More Plus plan if you're a new customer, you have to pay the contract plan prices which are higher.
My question is, has anyone tried upgrading their phone with the Even More Plus plan (non-contract plan)?

AFAIK, T-Mobile removed the EM+ plan option from the website months ago to prevent customer confusion (or some crap reason like that). New customers can still get onto EM+ over the phone and by going into the T-Mobile shops.
Also, I do not think you can get upgrades while on EM+ since it requires you to actually buy a phone unsubsidized (full price). The only way I could explain why the rep would've told you that would be if they though you were swapping from EM+ to EM. If you were on the normal EM plan, then you should be able to get upgrades and discounts on newer phones after a certain amount of time.
If you use an upgrade/discount to purchase a new phone you will *always* be put back under a 2 year contract rate plan. With EM+ you *always* pay full price for the device (and EM+ plans have not been taken away... yet.)
The T-Mobile representative was ready to give me an upgrade, she was on my account reading my upgrade prices. She said I can't upgrade online because of my plan, but she said I can upgrade through the phone or at a store. It didn't require me to switch to a contract plan. When I migrated to non-contract plan, they said I can't switch back if I wanted to. Not sure about this yet so I will go to a store today to confirm.
You can still upgrade but you have to pay the full price for the device, and all theyre doing is swapping your sim, they took away upgrades on EM+ in november when they took my $300.00 in upgrade credit back

I'm on the EM+ plan, and she said my price for the g2x and mytouch is only $217. She was on my account looking at the prices. I know the full price of the g2x is $499, not $217.
Pretty sure non contract plans are still available might have to go to the store and talk to a rep
and if not you cant call customer server and ask for android preferred internet for $20 doesn't matter how long you have had plan
Sound like she was giving you the subsidized price you would pay out of pocket. The rest will be on your bill split between 19 months.
That comes out to roughly $15 per month extra on your bill. Sounds about right.

Note not on contract for a new line?

I'm possibly switching to ATT. If I buy a note at full non contract price, can I get it activated with a plan with no contract?
If you are just now switching to AT&T, why not buy it with a new contract? I don't think you can switch in and not get a contract at all.... But I am not very knowledgable about that kind of stuff.

You could on tmobil. I wonder if the t989 radio would give you hspa+. It works for the skyrocket.
Then you could use the note, in the states, contract free on a decent network (42mbps not bad)

You can probably buy it on eBay from someone selling theirs at full price and then stick it on an AT&T GoPhone plan for $50/month unlimited everything.
But if your a new customer and want to switch to AT&T it'd probably be cheaper to sign a 2-year contract and get the phone for $300.
None of these options sound all that wonderful. id probably buy a different device on a network within my budget.

I prefer to stay off contract since its easier in case I want to switch carriers. I'm trying to find the best coverage/price then I'll commit to a certain carrier. Unless gophone has LTE I guess I'll sign the contract
thanks for the replies guys
The first time I subscribe with AT&T, I only had a year contract since I didn't require a phone from them. I had an international phone. They provided me with a SIM card and that's about it. But if you don't want a data plan, then don't show them the phone, so they can't get the IMEI

Reasoning: Phone outright is $650
Contract is $300
ETF is $325, Prorates $10/Month
Even if you have to cancel at some point, it is still cheaper than full price...

Not really. People will still need data plans. At most, Google might be snatching the small percentage of people who don't mind paying more for an unlocked device rather than the majority who tend to buy subsidized devices on contract.
Well If you go to a carrier with a phone that is yours outright. They cannot make you sign up for a data plan.
If you brought an unlocked Iphone to Tmobile, they have no reason to charge you for a monthly data plan..
However if you decide to use it with out a plan the price would be costly..
but you can just use Wifi..
that is how I had my Iphone working a few years ago on the tmobile service..
I never had any issues.
You get a cheaper phone through them. how ever they make up the money in the data plan.
So Google did sorta screw the carriers..
Actually the customer gets screwed and the carriers benefit. If you buy a $200 phone, you pay $100 a month for a data plan. It's $100 a month because instead of paying full retail for the phone, you are paying a little bit of it each month via your plan. So roughly $10-$15 of your bill each month is covering the cost of the phone.
The problem with buying an unlocked phone from someone else, is that the carriers don't discount the price of the monthly plan for you. So you still pay $100 a month, but you paid $400 for the device instead of $200. So you've been screwed $200 basically.
Now from the carriers perspective, they love this. Instead of taking $10-15 a month to recoup what they lost on the phone, they charge you that money anyway and it's pure profit.
When the original iPhone was released it was unsubsidized and people laughed at the $600 price. But, for $20 a month you got unlimited data and texting. so yes you paid more upfront, but your bill was $20 a month less than a comparable subsidized phone. So over the course of 2 years it was a good deal.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any carriers that will discount the monthly plan when you bring your own phone.

Realy?! My data plan is $30/month 6gigs regardless of the phone I use. If I get a new phone from them ,on say a 3 yr contract, I don't have to get a new plan. How does what you say make any sense?
If i was to change carriers (why would you unless you are cconstantly moving?) every time I got a new phone and was always getting a new contract to reduce the purchase price of the phone, then yes, the price of the plan would probably be higher to subsidise the cost of the phone.

You're missing the point. The monthly 4G plans are the same price as the contract plans, at least last time I checked. I looked at buying the international Galaxy Nexus when it first came out and putting it on T-Mobile and that is what I discovered.

You're misunderstanding what I said. You pay right now $30/month for your data plan (in my example I chose $100 to represent minutes, data, and texts as an example). If you were to buy an unlocked Galaxy Nexus right now and put it on your plan, you'd still pay $30 a month, but you'd be out $400 for the phone. However, if you are due for an upgrade, you can could get a phone for $200 (subsidized) and still pay $30 a month.
In both cases you are paying $30 a month, but in the former you are paying more for your phone. The only advantage to buying the unlocked phones is not being stuck in your contract if you hate the service.
But my point was that US carriers base their monthly rates on the fact that they have subsidized your phone. When you bring your own non-subsidized phone, they don't discount the phone accordingly. So you end up paying more and they ending up making more money.
Doesn't T-Mobile have lower monthly plans when you use your own phone or buy one at full price?
Most people would want a data plan on their smart phone. So its cheaper to get it on contract since they require smartphones to have a data plan regardless of where you bought it. Data plans are not cheaper if you brought your own, its the same. The only good thing about buying a phone off contract is you can jump to another carrier without ETF. IMO, the only.phones I would buy off contracts would be unlocked international ones.

Since this phone is not carrier specific, does that mean you can use it with AT&T using the $15 unlimited data plan?

I am referring to the unlimited data plan for "non-smartphone" from AT&T. As long as you are using a phone that's not sold by AT&T then they won't recognize IMEI and treat it as "non-smartphone".
For the samsung galaxy, AT&T has its own branded one and there is also a "world" version which also supports AT&T 3g band but AT&T don't recognize it. I assume the this is the same with this phone sold directly by google?

Is there a MINIMUM time you have to hold the contract for $200 ETF? I am now 22 months on vibrant and planning to upgrade to SG3 and trade in vibrant. Then break the contract in 2 months, effectievly paying 200+200-75 = $325 for new phone. Will this work

where's the -75 coming from? I believe it's 200-300 etf at around $10 month as you go, so in 2 months, you're at 20...no? Also, if you break it in 2 months, and they gave you a 600 dollar phone for 200, there's a very good chance they will want that phone back or charge you the discount...
---------- Post added at 08:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:57 PM ----------
Altho, my gf did get tmo a while back, got a free HD7, canceled after abou 2 months, they charged her somewhere around 250-300 for etf, plus whatever monthly service, but they never asked for the phone, or bill her for it, so it's possible, but I think she got lucky, anyone could easily do that , never open the phone, sell it on ebay for 4-5 hundred (at the time) and pay the etf and pocket the rest...
According to this, which is a bit dated, http://wirelesscontractsinfo.blogspot.com/2010/09/t-mobiles-early-termination-fee.html?m=1 it seems like you are correct in your assumption.
I would simply call them. Don't tell them you are specifically scheming to find a way to get a phone cheaper and leaving their contact. Rather, be inquisitive to the details of the contract you will be signing with them to upgrade your equipment, and the repercussions you will face for breaking said contract if the circumstances arise.
They'll be nice and cover all bases with you. They have to, it's a contract, and by law they are required a full disclosure to you.
Last month, my cousin decided he wanted a new phone. He called them, and he was 2 months early for his upgrade. By the time he got off the phone, he got an early FULL upgrade, and 2 new Samsung Blaze 4g's for $100 each plus taxes and shipping.
So, in my opinion... T-mobile seems to be more than willing to help out their customers, and understand that their customers want new equipment.

Looking at the link there is no mention of $10 per month etc, just a flat $200 for more that 180 days. Also how would Tmobile charge me more than what they would make me sign on the contract, even if phone is $600? Can someone else chime in?
And the $75 is the current trade in value for vibrant.

Thanks for your reply! I am not trying to be a douche to Tmobile, I get the best plan and rate from them and add to that great 3G speeds here. But I have to leave US in Sep and dont want to miss the GS3
That might be new, it was always, every month your etf goes down by a few dollars as you get closer to end of contract...
The reason they could charge you is they are giving you the $600 dollar phone for 200 assuming you sign and fulfill your contract...they make their money charging you a lot more a month on a classic plan every month vs. the monthly 4g for example.
Classic Unlimited = $79 unltd talk/text/2Gigs web....and after all the regional/911/city taxes you HAVE to pay on a contract plan, that is close to $95 a month ...vs same exact service on Monthly 4g, is $60 a month, and all you pay is sales tax on that...
so if you cancel it a month later, they let you out, yes for 200 dollars etf + 200 for the phone , and you are free and clear with a $600 retail phone? If this is the case, sign me up. That's 200 savings plus 20/month on service x24
Are you leaving for good, or coming back? It's it like a vacation, or a few months and you'll be back? You can have them put your account on hold, like a parked state, while your gone. Then when you return they can turn it back on and resume your contract from where you left off. I've seen this done from time to time.
Just depends on your situation.

Looking at the link there is no mention of $10 per month etc, just a flat $200 for more that 180 days. Also how would Tmobile charge me more than what they would make me sign on the contract, even if phone is $600? Can someone else chime in?
And the $75 is the current trade in value for vibrant.

Don't trade the vibe in for $75, sell it outright or keep it. People are paying twice that on Craigslist.
What are you looking at shortbus......
Does the etf hurt your credit?

ETF doesn't hurt your credit. But don't pay it and ignore the bill, and it still definitely screw up your credit.

Well it sounds like a no brainer, buy the s3 on contract, wait a couple of months and buy out. They can't ask for the device and an etf. I haven't read the fine print but its not a lease. I am going to check that out.

How long do I have to have service before I can cancel?

Hi, I have a question about canceling service with T-Mobile because they will not allow me to buy the HTC One without a plan online or over the phone and I want the specific T-mobile version. I know with AT&T you have to have service for over a month before you cancel without having to return the phone (well thats what the rule was 5 years ago as far as I'm aware when I got the iPhone 3G) Now that T-Mobile has phased out contracts altogether can I just go ahead and cancel the next day after the service is activated? I'll just pay the prorated plan price and the full price of the phone and then switch over to a prepaid plan.
I'm not sure but t-mobile customer service should be able to break it down for you. Their customer service is pretty amazing.
gooooooooooooood question
If you signed up for their new Value plans, you can cancel the next day. Because you are not tied to any more service contracts, the only obligation you have is the full balance of the phone. So once you pay off the phone, you are officially off-contract and the phone is yours (service optional). You're thinking of old Classic plans in which you need one month service before you get to keep the phone by paying the ETF. That doesn't exist anymore.
I'm sure T-Mobile has caught onto this and will change the way it works soon. I could see them doing something like charging $650 for the phone if you're a new customer then you get a credit after 30 days. Because technically the $579 is a discounted price for customers.

How do you figure that price? The unlocked 32 Gb on the HTC site was 579. Only the developer edition was 649. So it seems to me that TMO is selling them at retail.
