Hey,
I'm just curious about what impacts battery life more the Rom you use or the Kernel.
I constantly hear people asking 'what's the best Rom for battery life?'
I've recently switched from LeeDroid's Kernel to Anryl's because of the HUGE decrease in battery consumption. Should I also switch from LeeDroid's rom to something else too?
Thanks,
Louis
There isn't a deciding factor between the two. It's more a combination of the two... Here's why:
Say your ROM is configured for a different kernel. It's expecting the commands and out/inputs to be a certain way... They are getting different responses or have to take different paths to get the same output or input... Yet it's a stock kernel... So in that sense... It's the ROM's fault.
Now another scenario...
The Kernel is different/altered, and the ROM is stock (with root) Same thing, but the opposite... Not the fault of the ROM this time though...
Your battery life depends on many other things though, not just a ROM or a Kernel. Use wireless at anytime whenever it's available, this is the biggest battery saving of all, because it will TURN OFF your data connection and simply use Wireless for data... the 3G radio uses a LOT of power, and if you have poor signal or roam a lot, your battery life is going to be shot.

I've had windows phones for years now. and always end up grading my Roms due to more features, better battery usage, better radios, etc.
I just got my touch pro and have been reading a few threads about new roms. Roms always seem to fix 75% of stock rom problems and introduce 5-10 new bugs. But still worth the trade off.
Is it worth it really yet? I actually like my sprint rom. and it looks like most things can be changed/fixed with cabs......
I know it's a funny question to ask, that really has no right or wrong answer. But wanted some input from those that have upgraded.
Do you see:
Battery improvement?
signal improvement?
Graphics FPS improvement?
bug improvement or more problems than stock?
overall worth it with todays sprint roms?

-It depends what you're looking for but with the ROM I'm running I've greatly improved battery life. From what I understand there is a reg. edit that can be done to improve battery life with the stock rom (something about how often the phone polls the battery to check the level).
-I updated to another radio as well and I think I've had an overall improvement with the signal strength, but that's a little tougher to tell.
- Haven't noticed much of a difference with the FPS with any of the ROMs I've tried, but have seen a few of the stock bugs disappear ie the R button calling who ever is highlighted in the contacts menu. I have noticed a big improvement with the speed things load as well as the responsiveness of the screen/ TF3D
- I've always used ROMs to change up what programs the phone is stocked with. I personally don't use many of the stock programs that the phone comes loaded with from Sprint, so I use ROMs mostly to slim down the size of the OS. If that's something you're interested in load up a new ROM. There are quite a few good ones to choose from over on ppcgeeks
Do you mind telling us which ROM you are using? I am in the market for a new ROM and trying to see what people are using to better guide me.

thank you for that. very helpful
I didn't find anyones questions regarding the best rom for reception and battery life. I find that my phone goes into roaming mode a lot, and I was wondering if there are some roms that would replace the modem in my phone and a rom that would increase the battery life.
thank you.
Either your in an area where your service sucks or its possible you have a faulty phone. I've read complaints about some phones have horrible reception. ROMs wont improve your signal and data.
As far as battery, everyone seems to find their own method on what works best for them. Most of the roms are cooked with battery consumption in mind. Using set cpu to underclock while the screen is off is the most popular user method. Some roms have clocking settings already set to the devs liking. Youll just have to read through the development forum to find what roms have the features your looking for.
Also having low to no signal and roaming is probably the main reason your battery is draining fast.
oh I will check out some ROMs. My phone lasts about 8 hours with moderate use. I wish it lasted at least 12 hours.
I am running KL1 rom with a KK5 rooted kernel.
I get about 1 day and a few hours on a full charge with 3g and h+ network activated, some wifi usage but not much.
My problem is that i get between 29-40% usage of battery on android os.
Is that normal?
Is my battery life normal for what i do with the phone?
I turn off what i don't need and what i don't use gps, wifi etc (except for the data connection).
PS: i know it's a smart phone)
Ps2: i have done a battery calibration, this beeing the result after the calibration.

Sure it's ok...
U have a normal up to good battery life so no stress.
The question because adnroid os:
It just says that u didn't use ur phone soooo much.
People who using phone a lot more often (surfing, playing and so on) have this or more percent on Display.
So it's just and kind of relation: If u use one thin less and other is getting higher....
CHEERS
To cover this quickly, I'll break it down into three points:
1) you're getting pretty decent battery life; could be better, but a lot of people are getting a lot worse. If you want, PM me and I'll run you through how you can get the most out of your battery - I won't cover it here because it'd be O/T (I think).
2) the Android OS battery issue is well documented here, if you'd used the search tool (which, by the way, has just been improved greatly), you'd have seen the plethora of posts relating to said topic. For now, don't worry about it, there's really nothing you can do.
3) the Galaxy S II uses the MAX17042 fuel gauge, and doesn't need calibration. The best you can do is wipe your battery stats every few months (drain battery completely, plug into charger but do not turn on - allow to fully charge, then boot into recovery mode, go to advanced, and select the 'wipe battery stats' option).
Remember, always use the search tool

Doesn't matter. Battery life is dependent on literally hundreds of factors, your ROM and kernel don't play the largest part in that. Takeaway note: don't go flashing different ROMs and kernels with the promise of better batter life - yes, some kernels and ROMs might go a bit better than others, but it comes down to a variety of factors including usage environment, usage intensity, installed apps and respective services, etc. etc. etc.

Wasn't having a go at you, I was just making sure the OP understood that just switching to that combo won't fix things
I'm using Seraphim and I'm happy with the battery life. It seems to be worse than the GB ROM but I can get about 2% down every hour when the phone is idle.
I am thinking of trying different ROMs and battery life is very important to me. Which ROM will give the phone a better battery life based on your experience?
Thanks.

ah ok, im in search of a good ics battery friendly rom as well, actually downloading dag's ics "hybrid" rt now. i'll give it a go for the next couple days and post back. i was seeing about the same as you for seraphim.
In my experience, unless there's a bug, a ROM has little effect on battery life. Android is going to use a certain amount of power to run itself, and there is little that a dev can cook into a ROM to change this. Beyond the system, battery usage is from the screen, apps, and radios. If you are in an area with poor reception, and have lots of apps and widgets that frequently update in the background, this will decrease battery life.
I've used both DaGr8's Alpha II and Seraphim, and my battery drains less than 1% per hour when idling.
Guys a Search would have told you that Battery life is 99% on the user and has almost nothing to do with the rom. We could be running the exact same rom and get very different battery lifes due to the apps we use and how we have the device set up.
In the end there is not best rom. Only what works best for you.

How is everyone liking the KitKat Roms?
I'm thinking of upgrading because I'm getting pretty bad battery life with AJK 4.9 and Supernexus 2.0 (Android 4.1.2). I just got a new battery for my phone and that's when I realized that it wasn't my battery that was the problem.
BUT
My phone's charging port broke recently. Like, the innards of the port make a snap sound and fell out. So I have no USB functions on my phone any more so if my phone bricks mid update, I'm SOL. Also I am swapping batteries out half way through the day because my phone consumes power too fast.
So, any recommendations on KitKat kernels? Roms? I looked at RenderBroken's but I'm not sure if he's in the process of putting a new one up or what. The only downloads on his sight for the i777 kernels were in the "Old Builds" folder.
Also, doesn't holding the power button and both volume buttons boot into recovery? Because it's only going into Odin.
Preferences on ROM's?
Thanks in advance!
I'm sorry, I have a difficult time believing AJK kernel is the reason behind your battery woes. That kernel is very likely the most stable, tweakable, battery-friendly kernel ever made for our device, so if you are getting bad results with that... well, nothing else is going to improve matters.
A few things: stay in your current setup and run Better Battery Stats and Wakelock Detector. Between those two free apps you'll be able to see EXACTLY what's causing your problems.
KK roms take a bit more toll on the battery, and require a lot of tweaking to get things under control, due to the framework changes Google made. If you're worried about battery life you may be better off staying on JB until you discover the real cause of your battery problems.

I'm not worried about battery life so much as I just want to get through most of my day without having to swap batteries (which are brand new mind you). I updated to SuperNexus 3.0 so we'll see if there's any improvement of battery life.
What do you think about KitKat so far though?

I would advise you to stay off of Supernexus roms; they've long been abandoned and 3.0 especially was buggy. Try Renders' CM builds if you're wanting supported stable builds, or look in the ported section. Overall KK has performed great for me.

Ahhh but that means I have to switch kernels because I'm using AOSP. What about Render's 4.4 kernel? I looked at his thread but the link to the download only shows old versions. Are there any other 4.4 kernels working?
No, his kernels are great, you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure you thoroughly read what's required to make the jump to KK before you attempt it.
