[Q] Unable to make downgrades & USB problems - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys!
I've a no-brand italian Galaxy S2 and since i've installed the first official ICS version (the LPQ from Poland) i started having some serious issues.
The problem number one: i can't install any different firmware than ICS or Gingerbread 2.3.6 (ILA2 and ILA3). If i try 2.3.4 or 2.3.3 the result is a bunch of red words like "E: failed to mount /cache (No such file or directory)" or "E: failed to mount /efs (No such file or directory)".
The second problem is about the USB specifically when i use the phone as a mass storage. Suddently it disconnects. It can be after 5 minute, 10 minute or even after 30 seconds. It's not a PC problem since i've formatted it and the phone keeps disconnecting!
I believe the two things are linked somehow, that's why i made only one thread.
Hope to get through this with you
PS: Of course i've tried a factory reset, a deep clean 1 and 2. Still nothing.

How are you trying to downgrade?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA

By Odin with only PDA avaiable.

A few things regarding the USB.
Have you tried it with different usb ports and different computers? If they both still cause the problem, have you tried using a different USB cord?

First I'd try what the person above me said.
If it doesn't work on other computers, I recommend you to try to install another firmware thorough recovery. Something like CyanogenMod or MIUI to check if the problem exists there too.

If you are still facing USB connection problem to ODIN,
try this method to root your phone without a PC....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 since your are on the ICS official ROM
after rooting choose any Custom GB version of ROM put it on the SD card, and use the clockworkmode update file again to flash CWM and choose zip file from SD card and flash the ROM.....

[Q] Galaxy S2 (AT&T) stuck on bootscreen after PureICS-ROM Installation

1. After rooting, I downloaded ClockWorkMod (CWM) v 5.0.2.3 long time back.
2. Flashed with Cyanogenmod v7.1.0, and used it for 10 days.
3. Flashed MiUi ROM and it worked great. Used it for 3 days.
4. Tried flashing Pure ICS last evening. Now phone is bricked.
5. I didn’t know I needed to change my firmware before installing PureICS ROM.
6. The phone is stuck on boot-screen, neither loops, nor does it go any further than the boot-screen. Its just stuck there.
7. In download mode, Odin doesn’t recognize it and nothing shows up on screen.
8. In recovery mode, suddenly the CWM has orange fonts now and the version is now 4.0.0.2. Whenever I try to select any option in the list, only the following messages appear:
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/last_log
Now is there a way I can get my Samsung Galaxy S2 (AT&T) working, or is this now just another Brick in the Wall?
Please let me know soon. If this is a brick, I will have to arrange money to buy a new one then!
Thank you all.
You know your problem is that you flashed ics when it isn't compatible with our phones right?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
True
NOW, I know everything after screwing up. I admit I didn't know anything before this. I thought it was just like some other ROM. It was my mistake.
My question is, is there any way to get back? I don't mind loosing any data or numbers or photos and stuff, its all been backed up already on my laptop. I just need the phone to be working again.
Thanks.
Have you tried looking in the ONLY sticky in this Q&A forum?
Searched and found nothing
Hi.
Everything I found was for different phones. The ones for SGS2 were for international versions, not AT&T.
Also most forums have posed the question, but not showed how to get out of this.
I just need to know, if possible, to get my phone working again. If it means I have to do a stock flash, I wouldn't mind that too!!!
Can someone please help? this is serious!!!
Million thanks to all!!!!
EDIT:
I tried to locate this same problem in other sites as well. I am not able to find any solution(s) to this. I would be really grateful to the person who helps me get my phone working again. If you find a solution, please post it in the reply. I would really be thankful!
Thanks

Here is the return to stock package.
Try plugging your usb cord into the usb ports on the back of your computer, usually helps when working with odin.
I already have that
See, the main problem is when I start my phone in download mode, it doesn't show up on Odin, as it should. Also if I try to put it into recovery mode, i can't really use it, since there is some log file missing and the phone doesn't seem to be able to locate it.
As for the stock rom files, i already have them on my laptop.
Quick thought: would asking at&t or samsung technicians about this help in anyway? I want to get it fixed on my own. So that way I can learn as well! But if there is no way out of this, then please let me know.
I'm counting on you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!
Samsung won't be able to help.
you do have the usb drivers for the i9100 downloaded on your computer correct? If not the link is below, also make sure kies is not running. If it is plugged into the usb in the back it should pick it up. Keep trying, you'll get it.

If you haven't done this, make sure that you have the correct i777 drivers installed on your computer from here and then retry flashing via Odin.
About CWM Recovery missing log errors, can you elaborate more on that?

Oh does he need i9100 drivers as he flashed ICS ROM on it?
Did you have Odin open on your computer before plugging in the phone? Its a small detail but one that's easily overlooked

Thanks but I already have those in hard copy
I have these manuals in hard copy.
I think if there is no solution to this problem, there is an opportunity for someone to work on this. And maybe I will get it reset by at&t guys. Who knows.
This phone, in short, doesn't show up in Odin, doesn't recover from CWM, and doesn't move forward than the boot-screen of at&t logo and the dreadful Yellow Triangle.
What are your views on what should I do next?
Bad start for a Sunday, Im sure
Full description of my steps
Ok guys. Here is the full length description of what steps I took to this point in time.
1. After first rooting, I downloaded ClockWorkMod (CWM) v 5.0.2.3 long time back.
7. In download mode, Odin doesn’t recognize it and nothing shows up in that Yellow Box in Odin.
-->I tried flashing stock even though Odin didn't recognize it. Needless to say it didn't work.
8. In recovery mode, suddenly the CWM has orange fonts now and the version is now 4.0.0.2. Whenever I try to select any option in the list, only the following messages appear:
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/last_log
I repeated the steps 7 and 8 innumerable times after getting stuck on the boot-screen, but in vain.
I searched for forums and threads and discussions on other sites and XDA itself, but haven't seen anyone posing this issue, or even solving this issue wherever someone had posted about this.
If this thing doesn't work, I would have to stay without a phone for atleast 6 more months, since I don't have enough money on hand to buy a new one.
Thank you...

Once again.. did you try fresh install of Samsung USB drivers?
- Uninstall existing USB drivers on your PC
- Install i777 drivers
- Restart PC to be safe
- See if the phone is detected in Odin
If that doesn't work, repeat those steps by installing i9100 drivers.

You must get Odin to recognize your phone in download mode. I have never heard of a phone being broken in such a way that it will go into download mode but will not be recognized by Odin. So... there must be some problem somewhere, either bad drivers as suggested previously, or a bad usb connection, bad cable, bad port, etc.
What operating system are you using?
Things you could try:
Completely uninstall the usb drivers and reinstall them after a reboot.
Use a different computer.
Try different usb cable, or different usb port.
If you have access to another working sgsII, try putting it into download mode on your computer to see if it will connect to Odin.
Once you have a good connection to Odin in download mode, you will need to flash the correct firmware. This will depend on what you flashed with Pure ICS. Please look in that package and post all the components.
The files you will need can be found in the Download Repository, linked in my signature. Once you tell me what the Pure ICS package contains, I can suggest which package to flash.

[Q] SGS2 I9100 broken?

Hi. I have a SGS2 for 6 months, and yesterday I tried to update from 2.3.5 to 4.0.3 ICS. I used Odin -> vol- -> home button -> power to get into download mode and did all those stuff. [It was the official Poland md5 file, no root]
It didn't work, getting everytime boot.ini error. After that, I tried exactly what's on the bootloop topic and then here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458 to get back on my 2.3.5. Everytime I got the samsung logo and yellow triangle [only when I used the stock kernel], others md5 file over 250mb never flashed/ passed odin.
+ the symptoms below
Enters Download mode but does NOT enter recovery mode (usually means a NAND rw corruption)
Doesn't flash
Bad flash in odin (FAIL after flashing, or the flashing suddenly stops)
I checked every USB port, uninstalled kies but not the usb drivers, used 2 different cables and only rear usb panels. Tried different firmwares for i9100, like 12 or something.
Now my battery died, [low battery!! can't download..]. I don't have any other i9100, so no other battery.
What can I do now beside praying that it's not broken?
One USB recovery jig to force download mode
Two Paid for JTag repair
Three Paid for service centre repair.
Four Donate a brick to the new XDA building .
jje
I'm able to enter in the download mode. Assuming I get a charged battery, what should I do next?
Last time I used stock 'Kernel_I9100XWLA4' and that yellow triangle appeard + 'GT-I9100_DBT_I9100XWLA4_I9100XXKI4_I9100DBTKH1', but this one failed.
Do I really need to take every update and see if it works on my phone?

I just downloaded the official gingerbread [2.3.4 september - i9100] firmware from samfirmware.com.
still doesn't work. stuck at boot.bin
l.e.
all these problems after I watched and did everything I saw on a youtube video [How to Unroot/Unbrick your Galaxy S2 i9100! [ICS]]
Now I got a battery charged up, I can use download mode, flash any stock kernel [but stuck at loading with yellow triangle], and never flashed an official update [2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6 or 4.0.3] stuck at boot.bin
I also found on another forum someone with the same problem on a i9100G. He used a pit file and repartition, but after all researching everyone says it is some risky way.
You said you tried 2 different cables... I would buy a brand new cable (can be generic microUSB) and try again. I've seen more than one person have to try three before they found one that worked.
The second usb cable was from a friend with an identical i9100. still tried with some no-name cable and no result.. also I installed usb drivers from samfirmware and tried different rear usb ports.
Now I flashed Kernel_I9100XWKI4. It shows Samsung logo and yellow triangle. If I try to flash any other firmware, it just fails.
You using a Windows 7 machine? Try running Odin as administrator. And I would STILL try a different, DIFFERENT cable.
yes, w7. tried to run it as administrator, still no result.
I don't think usb cable is the problem.
OK, but I'm just saying, there was a thread where someone had to try three cables before they found one that worked. I'd also try a different computer. Unless that computer/cable combination works with your friend's I9100?
hi,
i am new to this forum.
Only after buying the G-version of S2 in India and using it for a few weeks, I came to know that it was an inferior version to the non-G version (in the sense that it is not only under-clocked but has far lesser custom ROMs to choose for the updates).
I might sound silly, but AFAIK, there is no official Samsung ICS for this product. I don't want to get my phone bricked and I can't find a proper ICS Custom ROM either. From what I've been reading elsewhere, the Samsung Official ICS for S2-I9100G won't be released before May (After Galaxy Note in April)
Can somebody suggest me a STABLE ICS ROM for this device? And yes, you'd have already gathered by now, I am a newbie when it comes to the complicated issues of rooting/flashing/and what not.
Thanks in advance.
I read about villainrom 1.1, tried to flash it now but after 3 minutes of loading it failed. Now I'm back on stock Kernel_I9100XXKI3.
I don't know if that second usb cable was used for any updates through odin.

For an I9100G? There isn't one yet.
And it's rude to try to hijack someone else's thread, dude.
I solved it!!!!
Congratulations
Would you care to share the solution to the rest of us?
I chose randomly 'Kernel_I9100JPKF3' from a list [probably I should've checked that this was the very official version of my phone] and flashed it with some i9100 odin version from an arabic website/blog. After the reboot, I saw there was no triangle and it booted normally.
Thanks ctomgee and jje for your time!
Happy for you that you have solved your problem
Best idea, if youy have problems go back to stock, SHIPPED rom.... Never failed me yet...
yep. now I see that the wireless connection is not as stable as it was before. It has lots of moments when it's disconnected from wifi by itself.
I'm not using any battery life saver and the router is fine.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
If you have the heart to venture that route again, to fix wifi issue you may want to use the ultimate kernel cleaning script and retry with the shipped or ICS kernels.
Also if you haven't yet, must read the guide to fixing unflashable soft-bricked phones.

Unable to enter downloadmode on SII HD LTE

- I tried adb shell reboot download. This results in the download mode, but disapears after 2 seconds.
- I tried to root the device via DooMLoRD tootlkit but this results in an error:
failed to copy 'files\Superuser.apk' to '/system/app/./Superuser.apk': Read-only file system
I'd would like to be able to

First off, do NOT follow that guy's advice above, unless you want to brick your phone.
Second, try reading/searching this thread. I myself did a quick perusal of it and found that someone in it mentioned that they were able to root their E120L or S by flashing Tegrak kernel. Search around for it.
@vdbergh, sorry, I noticed you already posted in that other thread.
About your issue; are you plugged into a mainboard USB port on your computer? Using a USB hub or keyboard passthrough can cause issues. Have you tried different cables? It could be a bad cable.

ctomgee, thanks for the effort to try to help me!
I am connected to the main USB port of my computer. I also changed the cable. Result is the same.
I think something is wrong with the firmware. Here's the history.
I had a perfectly good working phone. Then I wanted to flash the TL1.3. Something went wrong in that process and stupid me, I reseted the phone. Since then the phone was bricked. I tried everything but no success.
I sent the phonbe for JTAG repair. They manage to reanimate the phone, but it was impossible to get a network. All the est worked fine but I could't make phonecalls.
When I started Kies, it said to upgrade the firmware. The kernel upgrade went fine but the baseband upgrate got an error. I had the posibility to do an emergency recovery in Kies, but as soon as I start that, Kies doesn't recognice the phone.
Flashing new firmware via Odin doesn't work eiter.
The only small possibility I see is to restore a backup efs.img I found. But to do that the phone needs to be rooted. I can't do that via Odin so I tried the DooMLoRD tootlkit to root the phone. This doesn't work because I get an error that the filesystem is Read-Only.
Maybe I could root or upgrade the firmware via the recovery mode (apply update from sdcard option)?
So I'm very desperate now. I just don't know what to do anymore.

I would get the latest firmware available via CheckFUS. (if you don't know what that is, just google it) Then flash it via Odin. Let's start there.
Use gingerbreak in my signature, it doesnt even need a computer, just put it on your sd and install it, then let it do it's magic

My apologies... I didn't double check to see if the E120L was in Check FUS. Hmm. I'm not sure where you can get stock firmwares for the SHV-E120 series, unfortunately. (at least, on English language websites) Sorry dude, wish I could be of more help.

Thanks for your help ctomgee, I realy appreciate it.
I manage to root the phone by flashing the Tegrak-Kernel-Build-33-for-SHV-E120L-FB05.recovery.tar and installing the zip file in recovery mode.
I still can't connect to a network and I can't flash new firmware. All the flashing ends with an error that the NAND or amss.bin can't be writen to the phone.
Someoine has an idea what I can try now?

[Q] Need help fixing soft bricked phone

:highfive: Hi !
I run Windows 7, Samsung Galaxy S7390G (rooted) originally under stock rom (because there's no custom rom for my phone :crying:,) and without any custom recovery (because there's no custom recovery for my phone)
I had problem with my internal SD card, I posted on forums, but not this one, and had no help, so I decided to restock my phone.
I used Odin, because I failed with Heimdall, and Odin began flashing my Rom, but gave me a red "fail" message error.
I tried the SamMobile's stock rom for my device, S7390. I tried several ones, always S7390, and Odin failed each time, and stuck me in half-bricked state.
Note: My old computer is with Linux Mint, but I can't use it for now, but I can make a live USB with a Linux distro under the Window computer that I use now if it helps.
I have sometimes some trouble with the USB drivers, and I have been forced to reinstall them many times, trying different packages. For now, but I don't know if it will last, Odin is able to recognize my phone, but each time I try to flash a Rom, it fails. I tried another USB cable, and other USB ports, same thing...
I don't know what to do? I read that there was solution with the adb command, I'll read about it, because I have poor knowledge, but I despair
Even if I know it can be repair, but I can't do it! :crying:
I can only access to download mode.
Please, help a poor despaired French girl. Thank you very much.
Nobody?
None to help? :crying:
Same Problem
No worrys darling you can just go to recovery mode of your phone and select wipe factory data reset and then your phone will reboot and it will be as new as you bought it that time only.
Hope it helps

Am I doomed

Greetings all,
I am a real noob and have recently taken to playing with my android devices.
Unfortunately I am in a predicament with my old S3 I9300.
I really screwed up and failed to make a Nandroid back up when using TWRP to flash Cynagenmod 13, after following the correct procedure on my other I9300 and successfully flashing it I became cocky and made the fatal error of not having a back up. A bit of back story but perhaps unrelated it was also suffering the old "Failed to Mount EFS" message which I have recently learnt to fix on my Old Old I9100 S2 using ADB.
After flasing It was in a Cynagenmod boot loop and was not able to be recognized by my pc via download mode or recovery, so was unable to use Odin, Kies or even ADB.
After experiencing USB issues with Cynagenmod 13 on my other I9300 when the flash was successful, I decided that perhaps it would be better to flash Android Revolution as the USB connections just seem to work better. After the flash seemed to be successful and the Samsung Logo just hung around and never booted.
I played with it all day, trying to get Kies, ADB and Odin to recognize it to no avail, (I tried every little trick on Google, reinstall drivers, restart pc , restart device, plug unplug, play with the buttons and the battery etc.....) the thing is, is that Odin would recognize it in bootloop.
After growing tired of this not working, for some stupid reason I decided to flash CWM over TWRP via MicroSD, i just thought maybe I could get ADB to work or something. Anyway the flash worked and I continued to try ADB, KIES and ODIN but nothing.
To make matters worse currently when I try to go to Recovery CWM is now looping (I'm hoping its a passing phase), so with recovery gone my phone is restricted to Download mode. I really think my last chance is to get download mode communicating with Kies to get the Firmware.
Feeling frustrated and about throw my phone on the recycling heap after googling and reading so many XDA threads I decided to reach out and ask for any help or suggestions in finding a way to get my phone recognized in Download Mode.
I thank you for your time in reading this post and look forward to hearing any advice.
Cheers.

Hey Mate,
Firstly we all are noobs here helping each other, secondly from my experience of S3, it is such a device that under any condition, if your hardware is intact, you can recover your phone from almost anything, so yeah you might have a solution to your problem.
Coming to the problem at hand, i had the same thing happen to my S3, (only twrp logo showed, couldn't access recovery, no ROM, only download mode available) the way i fixed it was using odin, now i know you say that odin is not recognizing your device, the thing is firstly Kies is useless in this situation acc. to me, it only works stock ROM and that too with difficulty, what i would say is go here - http://developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117
and then install the drivers to your PC, next up download the official firmware from sammobile or any other site (careful of the version you are using), now put the phone in download mod, start odin and then connect your phone. Now, hopefully odin will recognize your phone and you can flash the official firmware, also i would recommend to stay on the official firmware for like a week before returning to flashing again as i have noticed that constant flashing and wiping leads to not only errors like "unable to mount EFS" but also serious errors like "Unable to mount /system" or "Unable to mount /Data" ,which clearly sucks
Please try the method and tell me if it worked , if not we'l try something else but we sure as hell will get your device working again
If still not recognized then here is a suggestion :
Exit/uninstall from nokia/ovi suit.
Exit/uninstall bluestack. (if u r using it)
Update your drivers(phone specific)
Use correct odin version acc to ur phone

I'm just gonna throw my 2 cents in too. I didn't read your whole thread as I'm in a slight rush right now.
But basically -
Can your PC recognise your phone when it's plugged into USB in Download Mode? If so, use ODIN to flash any stock firmware and you're back to square one (working, but stock) phone. Then go from there. Obviously try to flash the right firmware or you'll end up no further forward.
If it can't recognise it, try reinstalling the drivers, uninstalling the programs mentioned above and using another USB cable. My experience with my own S3 has shown potential wear with the USB port on the bottom of the phone presumably due to it's age and as a result it doesn't recognise many USB cables.
Regards
