I am using the CM 7 RC1.. I am using Strontium 8Gb Micro SDHC Card..
Recently i am encountering this strange sd card issue..
When i plug the phone to pc through usb cable i am not able to turn on USB Storage, it just appears like turning on and gives a Msg that "SD card safe to remove"
Also it gives an SD card error in CWM Recovery when i try to mount SD card..
When i mount it through CWM as usb storage. My PC asks to Format the disk. But the disk capacity displayed as in properties is just 45.8 MB !!..
I have contacted the Service Center and they have assured to replace the Card within 8-10days..
But i wanted to know if this is a regular issue due to any bug in this rom??
what do u think has happened to the card.. Is it FIRED!! ?? or can it be fixed

im using rc0
i had a issue similar to yours
when i used to enable usb storage it used to activate
but immediately phone used to reboot
but in my case i could mount via recovery
a clean flash helped solve the issue
I had got this same mount problem a week back , but then i could mount it as usb storage device in recovery.. and my PC detected it, I formatted it and the Card was normal... But this time , this problem occurred when i was transferring few videos onto sdcard, suddenly the transfer halted.. I Turned off the USB storage and removed the USB cable.. From then this issue arrised..
The card is detected by pc in CWM after Mount as usb storage --> After mounting PC asks to Format the device and Then all i see is just 45.8 Mb !!..
I wonder if it is the SD card which is detected or cache ??
i checked it with other devices .. Though the cards capacity is 8Gb it shows UN-Formatted Space of 45.8 Mb .
Try formatting the sd card with SDFormatter v3.1 with format size adjustment on, format to fat32 fs.
Then try in cwm again and if all is good you can re-create any extended partition you require.

Download from internet "MiniTool Partition Recovery", remove the SDCARD from phone then plug it into Laptop or PC via a CARD READER or CARD ADAPTER let windows find the card after that open "MiniTool Partition Recovery" and look for your SDCARD in this application. Check your card to not be partitioned, if it's so delete the partitions of the SDCARD and APPLY, after that try format the SDCARD form "MiniTool Partition Recovery". If format is successful check card space and plug it back to the phone.
If the SDCARD isn't damaged this should work.
I'll try it out.. Thank u both

oh gr8 The best policy of strontium is they replace the card directly w/o repair or any hassle..
No need of Bills or warranty card. Thats what the cc told me.. They asked me to get the card.. They will check if its original or not.
thats all .. And replacement will be done in 8-10 Days..
Was that the same procedure for u too??
i am at home due to Viralfever 100d so thought of repairing it myself..
Now, Since u mentioned they have updated the cards .. Ill get it replaced soon..

I've looked at the other threads on this but, none seem to match my problem.
I've a 16 GB MicroSD card in my S2. S2 is not-rooted running stock ROM.
This card used to mount ok. It no longer will.
In Settings->Storage, space reported is unavailable (because it's not mounted).
I can run Format SD Card option which returns quickly.
Running Mount SD Card, it's says Mount in Progress but it never completes.
If I put the card into an SD card reader, it looks fine. FAT32 formatted card, with approx 16GB available.
Any ideas?

I had similar problems with two other sd cards.
First running without any problem, and then suddenly the message appeared that the sd card is empty or not connected.
In both cases, the sd card was broken.
But in my cases, the sd card could not be used in a USB adapter by PC either.
As the sd cards were nearly new, I could make a warranty replacement and now I have got a card which works fine for about two months.
You can check this, by switching the sd card into another phone.
And use another sd card in your phone.
If the other card will work in your phone and your sd card will have issues in the other phone too, replace the broken sd card.
Good luck !
P.S.: You should format the sd card with your phone and not by your PC.
Other MicroSD Card works

Thanks for the response. I should have said that another 4GB card worked in the phone ok. This did lead me to think it was a card problem. However, he fact it works via a PC indicates otherwise.
Will try it in another phone.
Just throw it away?
Has anyone seen this before i.e. not working in phone but ok in SD reader?
If so, did you manage to resurrect it? Or is it time to throw it out?

Try this. Settings>Application>Development
Check usb debugging.
Connect phone to pc. In notification bar click "usb connected" message, and click on "connect usb storage" button. You won't see the sd card mounted in pc!
Now disconnect phone, reboot. It might mount
See if there's any luck.
Since you're not rooted, solutions are quite limited in numbers

Tried disconnecting and rebooting in 2 senses of the word
1. Hitting the disconnect usb storage button on screen
2. unplugging the usb cable.
Unfortunately, neither worked.
i'm having this problem now both on internal and external sdcard... it wont even mount on recovery... i'll try see if i can this done.. Windows damages everything.. i made a cleanup of the sdcard and a format..
Hey. I bought a new _cheap_ SDHC card online, 32gb... When I put it in my phone, the phone gets pretty slow while there's a notification saying "Preparing SD card" "Checking for errors."
Now it stays there for a long while and the phone gets very hot... Is the card defect or is there something that can be done?
Have a look for H2testw
Well the problem is that i can't mount the card since i don't have a card reader...
Please forgive me for not being psychic, you didn't say that originally.
No need to be hostile man.
Anyways, i let my phone run for a few hours, still nothing...
Does anyone have any idea? The phone IS rooted, so that might have something to do with it, gonna try to unroot it today to see if that makes any difference.
this happened to once, I bought a 32 GB from amazon and it was cheap. It was a disaster, all my data I stored in it was erased spontaneously. I returned it and had a refund. My guess, the sd_card is inferior
y don u get a cardreader an check for eerors or format an c....or u can set usb debugging and do tht if dont hav card reader...some use 64gb card wiv no prblm..
You don't need a card reader to check for errors if you don't have one. Just plug your phone with the card in it into a computer and search for your card in windows explorer and check for errors there. You can also format it from there also.
I managed to check it on a card reader today, windows does recognize something is going but doesn't allow me to format it or do anything except change the drive letter basically... When i check it through computer -> manage -> disk management it shows it as a MBR? Why is that and any way to go around it?
Oh and i can't access the card while it's in my phone at all, it just keeps looking for errors and doesn't mount it?
preparing SD Card and checking for errors
I am also having the same problem, My sd card always shows the message Preparing sd card and checking for errors in galaxy fit and I have formatted it in my pc and then tried all the other methods like deleting the msdos file from system/bin etc but still the problem persists. would there be any problem with my phone of sd card slot kindly reply
Hey all,
Last friday i wanted to place some MP3's on the MicroSD-card in the phone, 16GB. Something went wrong (Phone shutted down) and since then the MicroSD-card isn't recognized by the phone.
If i place another MicroSD-card in the phone it works with no problems.
The MicroSD that doesn't work in the phone, does work in windows with an SD Adaptar... I formatted the card (FAT 32), won't work... Resetted my phone... won't work... I can use the card in windows normally, it writes and reads data like any other card... but my phone just won't recognize it...
Anyone has some idea?
Can you format card by insterting it into phone and then format in Storage settings?

I will try if i have someone with such a card... In the mean time wouldnt it be possible to make two 8GB partitions? Or 4 GBs?
If i make it an NTFS-card? Will it ask to reformat? If the phone can actually see the card... Sigh..

Didn't work... it's like the phone has turned off the SD-Card reader when inserted with that card
It's being checked on reading errors in windows..... but so far 0..
Well... no problems found..
I checked the info of the SD-cards.. changed the serialnumber of the one not working to the one working.. i also tried to change it to change the partition ID but that does not work.. it doesnt get changed..
Try this : insert SD card, go to settings, storage, and mount SD card.

I was just gonna say, if you have cwm you can format it from there. That's actually how I fixed one of my bricked SD cards. Only cwm could format it. Partition mini tool said bad disk.
Also try this from terminal or adb:
fdisk -l /dev/block/mmcblk1 and see what it says.

[Q] Can't mount external sd (Rootbox ICS)
I've been using RootBox ICS 1.8 with V6 and pdroid patch (made by autopatcher 2.1.5) for a while now, everything was fine until yesterday my phone was auto powered off a few times after the battery ran out.
I can't mount the external SD card now, it's recognised by the phone and I have the option to choose "Mount SD card", but it's not actually mounting the card. When I tap it, "Preparing SD Card...." will flash for a second, then disappear without actually mounting.
CWM is unable to mount the sd card either. Taking the battery and sd card out also doesn't make any difference.
What should I do? Will reflashing the rom help, or does it sound like a hardware problem?
It did happened to me and I think the yung mmc is messed up. Have you tried using it on other phones?
UPDATE:
Okay... it seems the sd card is busted. Windows can only detect 30MB from it (it's a 32GB card). Is there anything I can do before asking the shop for warranty?

Hmm... partition wizard just shows me 30.6MB no matter what I do. I guess it's time to find out whether that 5 year warranty will hold...
Hi all,
I've got a very strange problem.
my ext sd card gone crazy today.
I'm currently using the lates official stock rom and didn't have any problem untill this morning.
When I press either home or turn on button the lock screen turn on in 2-3 delay and got the following messages in the statusbar:
"preparing sd card"
"sd card removed"
"empty or corrupted sd card"
and the phone doesn;t recognize my card.
Sometimes I need to reboot, sometimes just use the home butten when lockscreen applied and ok.
I've got a genuine Sandisk 32GB class10 microsdhc.
What do you think guys?
That is more common that it should, unfortunately.
Your card is really corrupted, and I've had it happen to my about 4 times with the S II and once with the S III (with different brands and sizes of uSD cards)
What you should do is:
- turn off the phone and remove the uSD card
- using a card read (of any kind), insert the card in the computer
- Windows (if that's the case) will detect the card is faulty and will ask you to format the card. SAY NO.
- try to copy/backup whatever file you can from the uSD card to your computer
- after that, backup the uSD card using FAT32
- copy the files back from the computer to the uSD card
- insert the card in the phone and turn it on.
There's two ways to fix this eitger by replacing ur current sd card or formatting this one using a computer.

Thanks for the help.
So the card is almost empty, because I use dropbox and everything will be saved there,so I dont care if I loose everything.
what do you mean when you say"backup the uSD card using FAT32"?
how can I do that? I know how to format the card to FAT32/FAT etc but this is not clear for me.
1more thing:when my phone says"sd card corrupted" and remove it from the device and plug in to the pc the computer not recognize at all.I have to reboot my computer to recognize it...

sorry! I meant: format it using FAT32. don't do a quick format, but a full format (even although we aren't supposed to do that to flash media).

ok,thanks and I'll give it a try
tried all the supported.formats without any success...
phone keep saying "sd card removed" sd card empty" however if I connect to the pc while I got these messages at statusbar the sd card starts working the oc recognize it,I can copy/paste read to/from the card and when I unplug it from pc it works untill I use the lockscreen...and all the **** starts again...very annoying.
just tried with my old gs2 and works flawlessly...
Similar issue solved with chkdsk /f
I realize this thread has been inactive for a while, but I found it by doing a search in Google after having the same "SD card damaged" error and thought someone might benefit from some extra input.
I solved a similar issue with my SD card by mounting it on a Windows PC (which did recognize it, however as unformatted) and running a "chkdsk /f" command from the windows command line (note: my card was already formatted as FAT32 before the issue occurred). CHKDSK did the trick - it now mounts again flawlessly on Android and I am not missing any of the 20GB of data on it.
