I'm debating on which device should I get. I really like the Hero due to the new sense UI but also seen the new sense UI port to the Magic. I'm stuck using my touch hd which after seeing the hero making not want it anymore.....any opinions?
if you knwo what the guys here are like, then i have no doubt that sooner or later a good working version of the new UI will be ported to the Magic.
Personally, i'd take the magic and wait for that, cos despite the fact that i love how the Hero works, personally i think it is ugly as sin. But obvioulsy that is a personal opinion, so YMMV.
I have just picked up the htc magic. I got it all hacked and moded and put v 1.4 of fatal1ty's Hero rom on it. It's GREAT! If you want to join the Hero party, but don't want to wait, or you don't really care too much about the 5mp camera (magic's is 3.2mp) then you're more than set to pick up a magic.
At this point, price is going to be the biggest issue, essentially, there's very little else different between the two, aside from the obvious outer appearance.
If you don't have an android phone yet, grab yourself the magic. Use it for a while with the stock android rom, (you'll love the change), then, when you're ready, you can try the Hero Rom and be wowed all over again. At least... that's what I did.

Good info, thanks for that. Though the processor/ram were different inside though too?
Thanks for the opinions guys. You're right about it being the same despite the the camera and to be honest with you I have the Touch HD and I barely even use the camera. I'm convince to get the magic tomorrow sense ui sold me...
Hero, you are buying into a tech that will be changed in 6 days Go new!
Plus the 3.5 mm jack, Magic doesn't have that from what I hear, plus the teflon coating
Ah yes, I forgot to mention that there's no 3.5 inch headphone jack. Only a mini usb jack. I forgot because I use a bluetooth stereo headset (nokia 503) and never really miss the 3.5 jack.
You can get a small adapter for the usb port to turn it into a headphone jack. Either way, the processor is 528mhz, and the ram is the same. I recommend getting the rogers, or htc branded magic. Don't go for the vodaphone, for some reason it's missing 90 megs of ram (only 192 or so megs of ram instead of 288). Aside from that, the magic REALLY isn't that different.

hehe Teflon coating! OMG!!! It's a cool idea, but generally speaking, if you take good care of your phone, it'll be useless. If you drop your phone a lot, or slide it around on hard surfaces, or for that matter, put hard objects in your pocket with your phone, you really shouldn't get a phone like this, or you should accept the fact that you've got bad habits.
Even the Hero will take wear and tear with poor treatment. On the bright side, any phone can be kept new looking if you actually take good care of it.

nah hero hero hero hero! Magic is lame. Old android is rubbish, and the ports dont have real widgets for some reason or another! A lot of magic's have reduced ram too! If you can get it, htc hero will be a good investment! The magic is weird to hold, and the camera is slow, and its aestheitcs are nothing on the hero. hero hero hero hero!
Lol I'm confuse now. I really like the Hero cause of the UI and the way it looks but its really expensive buying it off ebay. I live in new york and the Magic is coming to Tmobile. I was going to wait til it was released here but I think i'll just cough up the money and get the HERO, Or should I wait til they figure a way to port android to the TOUCH HD (which I'm starting to hate aftering seeing the HERO) No different between the hero and magic?
Do not suppress your inner wants....go HERO! Magic is second best old tech. The gadgeteer in you demands Hero

You could be waiting years. I had a Touch HD 6 months ago and they were trying it then. Never say never though, you'll probably have a new phone by then anyway.
So if I was to get the magic and port the hero rom into it, I wouldnt get all the widgets?

Just been reading about this Sense UI on the Magic.
1. Its really slow, unbelivably slow in fact
2. Lots and Lots of bugs, some people can't even get messages!
Think its a hero for me!
Can't beleive this is even a discussion tbh.
The Magic is oldddd! Months old tbh.
what kinda of question is that lol jk. Hero their both touch screen only and hero is clearly better so why not treat yourself
Personally the Nexus's hardware and speed make me feel the hero outdated.
What would you guys think about switching to Nexus from Hero?
EDIT: Please move this thread to other room
I don't know - should you?
Only you can answer that question! When I bought my Hero, it was the best Android phone on the market - nearly 6 months down the line there are more powerful alternatives (e.g. Milestone, Nexus One etc) and that is hardly surprising.
Personally, I'm going to wait and see how 2.1 pans out for the Hero before jumping ship to something else, but I do expect to be running something different in 6 months time at the outside.
Regards,
Dave
im not, im going to wait for htc to bring out there next android, i feel as if the nexus hasnt quite been made as good as it could be and htc is holding out slightly, feel its worth waiting for there next one. Also i love my hero its quick enough for me and im sure nexus will be a pain to root for a while.
it's already rooted. and cyanogen will get one - which means i will ditch my hero and hope to get enough money out of it to make the hit in my budget bearable.
edit: the most compelling reason aside from speed is that HTC is PITA when it comes to releasing the GPL parts.

The Nexus One *is* an HTC phone!
Regards,
Dave
I think he means that is is a google experience phone rather than the Hero is not, ie no sense and stock android. Personally I would wait to see how the HTC Bravo/ Passion is. (its basically the same as the nexus one just with sense and htc stuff)
how long did the magic guys wait for kernel sources? i was under the impression that the google experience phones always have a working msm kernel? is this a wrong assumption?
Guys, after doing some searching I also like the Milestone because of its design.
What do you personally think about the design of the Milestone and nexus? I think Milestone will win because the Nexus looks like plastic (the same as the hero's)
i agree milestone or droid or w/e is a slick looking phone! but the ui isnt for me...
also i love sense, and the look of nexus isnt for me eitherr..
i do know that my next phone will prob be htc sense ontop of android 3.0 on a slick looking phone with a 1 ghz processorr! - - cant waiit! haha
so id say if you have to ask, dont bother because soon enough you wont even have to ask yourself, it will be like OMG i neeed that phone! aha
Hey XDA,
I was just wondering why there are so many cool things for the T-Mobile G1 and not for the HTC Hero..
Not that there are no cool things for our hero, but the T-Mobile G1 has a less CPU less memory and stuff like that, and they still can get a higher MBflops then the HTC Hero!?!?
What i read was that the HTC Hero was a "updated" version of the T-Mobile G1..
The T-Mobile G1 android development threads just seem to life much more then the HTC Hero ones, also they have theme's on their Eclair/Cyanogen roms.
Does someone have a explanation?
Th e G1 was one of the first Android powered phones so i guess thats pretty much the point. Developers wanted to take a look at android so they bought a G1 and did not wait for the G2.

hmm.. yeah i can understand that, do you also know why the G1 can get fkin 15 Mflops?!!? thats really much, max we get is 5.048 i thought?
Looking for current opinions on which would be a better budget phone. Anyone used both? Have both? Looks like the processor in the Inc 2 is probably better, while the screen on the fascinate may be better. Though, I've heard the fascinate has had issues with GPS.
Thanks,

Incredible 2 all the way. I went back to my incredible 1 after I test drove the fascinate. I see it like this, the fassy is beautiful super model who looks out at you through that sexy screen. Then you ask her to do something for you, and she has to think about it. The incredible, is like a Midwestern farm girl. Not as pretty, but she gets the job done.....
It depends. Sorry, but it does.
If you want to stick to stock software, you want the Incredible 2 with Sense. The Inc2 has more specs than the Fascinate, really is faster, and Sense beats Touchwiz hands-down.
However, if you want to flash CM9 on it, the Fassy is fast and responsive (TW is slow and bloated) and has great support thanks to being a Nexus S sibling. Samsung crippled great hardware with TW.
You won't be sorry with either one, though.
Android possible for the Titan. i saw this video and i felt optimistic having a HTC Titan.

That's fake. It's one of those android china phones that look like an HD7 but really are just some cheap android... Besides a video from 2011 that shows what looks like a functional android build ... Yea that would've been released if it was real.
