Good sms app? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently switched from sense to AOSP and the only thing i really miss is the Sense messaging app.
I want something which is elegant and professional looking, I've tried chomp sms, hanscent, go sms and they all seem quite cartoony and frankly ugly.
Does anyone have any suggestions??

I'm using GoSMS, there are lots of different themes from horribly girly to elegant you'll find everything.

the stock sense 3.6 app is the visually most striking to me, the other apps might have functionality but unless they can skin it like sense 3.6 im not moving to ant 3rd party app

Which dialer app is the best

I'm using cm7 now, I want to install some T9 Dialer app like Htc Dialer on it. Youlu is a good dialer, but I don't like it's SMS function. Are there any other quick response dialer apps for CM7?

Dialer One!
I thought dialer one was sluggish. Try ray dialer.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Thanks. I liked Ray dialer.
I personally am happy with the stock HTC dialler. Although, I've never really properly tried any other Diallers.
You mean you are using htc stock dialer on cm7 rom? I think htc dialer is the best, but couldn't install it on cm7.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Yes the stick dialler. Sorry my device is stupidly on 2.2 so its not rooted. Can't help there.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Stock HTC dialer is limited to copy paste and edit number in comparison to AOSP GB stock dialer, which is by far better!

DialerOne never worked for me. Too sluggish, as everyone has pointed out.
You could also try Dialer2 and TouchPal Smart Dialer. Both good alternatives. (TouchPal FC's on CM7, worked flawless on all previous ROMs tried. So if you not using CM7, you should be good)
EDIT: I am always on the lookout for good T9 dialers like the HTC Sense one. Just now I found, these two "Contapps", and "AContact- Smart Contact". Contapps feels heavy on resources but AContact looks refreshing. Very good concept. Try it out.
But I still miss the HTC call sceen with a bigger contact picture (FB synced) with FB/ twitter status message.
what about youlu? it looks quite neat. i've been using it for a few days, so far so good.
For me TouchPal dialer works just fine. It's great.

some dialers want to format numbers with dashes by force, touchpal is one of them. if your numbers aren't their form it's a quite boring situation.
edit: changing locale from usa to uk solves the dash problem. so, touchpal is a great dialer too
have you tried Go Contacts ?

Yes Now I've use it with CM7.1RC1 and Go Dialer.

back again to touchpal. it's faster than go and youlu. its vibration options are also nice. if you use minicm you don't need it, i think.

Sense 2.1?

Is there anyone attempting to port sense 2.1 out there? Not trying to be a rush but we got so few roms and a few just outright suck.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
How do they suck? We have Stock sense froyo, cm6, cm7. And all of these are very stable roms
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
I like Gene Poole's Lib Aria 2.2.2.
Can you tell me how different is Sense 2.1 from Sense 2.0?

Ditto, I fail to see how they suck. We have a wide variety of roms that are all really nice. Sense 2.1 would just be filling a very specific niche.
Well for one, HTC messages app does not organize messages right. Two, they're all really bland and devoid of any elegance we novices cannot add. Three, we have such a low number.

OK, so you dislike the HTC message app. We have 2 different versions of CyanogenMod for the Aria; CM 6.1 is an ASOP Froyo ROM and CM 7.0 is an ASOP Gingerbread ROM Neither one of these has a trace of HTC Sense in them.
The beauty of Android is that the Market Place is full of apps and themes that even novices can use to customize the phone to your hearts content. I suggest you get more familiar with exactly what can be done to customize your phone and quit relying on someone else to customize a ROM for you.
Well actually I like sense, but the messages app kills the joy of it. I had cm7 and I enjoyed it. My only problem is it is so bland. Even with customization. If there was a messages app fix, I'd be happy enough.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Have you tried gosms? It's all I use and I change the look at least weekly.if you can't customize IT to your liking then nothing will ever satisfy you.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
There are so many messaging apps out there.
Sent from my HTC Aria using XDA App
It does not fix the sms problem. I always used it on cm7 but it doesn't fix my sense issue.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Try handcent, it fixed my sms issues. The messaging app was the only thing I had a problem with on sense roms.

Help with CM7. <<PORTING STUFF>>

Hey. I really love cm7 for the speed and stuff, but there is TWO things that I miss. Sense dialer and contacs. Is it possible to port them?
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Nope. It needs the Sense Framework, and if you get that, you have a Sense ROM.
Damn thats sad. :s any other dialer&contact apps? That would not lag. Because rocket dialer does lag like s***.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
There's a discussion thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964942
You can go through that. I don't use 3rd party dialers, and have gotten used to the CM7 one.
Thank you!

Chomp SMS, Handcent, or GO?
I started with Handcent on my htc hero a long time ago, but then I tried GO and I really liked the theme options. Fast forward to now, GO takes up a lot of memory and it feels heavy. I haven't used chomp, but i heard that it doesnt support group messages?
Opinions?
None of the above... Go Apps have always had memory issues as well as privacy concerns and the other 2 arent all that great. Your better off staying stock. You can get popup notification apps if that's what your looking for.

+1 for Handcent. I hate apps that use a white background, and all the inverted Messages apps I've tried break the ability to send/receive mms.

Long time handcent user. Recently just tried Chomp and its nice and speedy. Plus handcent was sending double texts.

Yeah, handcent with the darkness them and a few customizations is the s***. Lol. Always treated me good.
Plus I like their dev team, they seem pretty on top of things.

I've tried Go, Handcent, Chomp and Pansy. None have been as responsive as the stock app for me. They all feel sluggish. And I really wanted them to be better, I hoped they would be. But stock is it for me.
If aesthetics are more important to you, then try Handcent. And if the stock app is slow for some reason, I'd check your General message settings and try enabling auto-deleting messages. Use SMSBackup+ and they'll be backed up to your Gmail account if you ever need them again.

Well said, I'd prefer aesthetics over performance(within reason of course).
There aren't that many reputable ones, I say the OP should go try them all!

Let me vent .......

Ok I'm coming from a iPhone 5s it was a solid device the screen was just too small and I get bored easily. Now don't get me wrong the HTC m8 is a great device but there are some minor things that bug me enough to want to vent on here lol
1. The emoji's why are they so stupid looking coming from an iPhone I don't even know what some of my friends send me some times I can't find a text message app that replicates iPhone emoji
2. My texts have been being split and in 2 messages with the 2nd part first wtf!!!!!!!
3. I can't send videos because it says they are too big.......... This is bull**** I could send any video without an issue on my iPhone
4. Ads there's ads everywhere !!! I get so many pop ups it's crazy along with massive ads on apps
Do you guys have any suggestions? Tips? This is very frustrating
Aside from that I love my phone no other gripes but honestley if they issues don't pan out for me I'll be going back to iPhone. I kind of plan on it for the 6 but I may not be able to wait if I keep getting these annoyances.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
Likewise I am coming from an iPhone. Yes.... IPhones are great. But you need to give yourself some time to get used to Android. I was on Android before. So switching back and forth is easy for me.
I don't have the issues that you seem to have. I think emojis have to do with the keyboard that you use. So try changing that. Never had the same issue with split text messages that you have. Yes in android ads are everywhere. Remember that Google is PRIMARILY a search engine company. .and how do they make money ? Yes by selling ads.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
try textra...

problem solved.
The HTC keyboard supports emoji, but it is a pain to switch to it. You can install another app or keyboard
The double text is due to the sender sending a text longer than 160 characters. The iOS automatically syncs them so you never noticed it's really two text. For android, some apps don't support this so that is why you see two text.
If you root, adaway will block 99% of the ads.
It'll take getting used to, but it's not bad. You just have to tweak. Some people love to tweak and some don't.
Emoji looks fine to me. They are different because Apple will sue them if they look the same. Mms is 600k limit on Apple and Android. That is an at&t thing. IPhone will compress up to a 19 second video which is pretty much not viewable on the other end. Sms are the exact same with splitting messages. If you are using imessage on iPhone it does not split the message and does not compress video as bad. Imessage and facetime are the best things about Apple's ecosystem and it takes a minute to get used to not having them anymore. As far as ads, I only booted the stock system once to make sure phone was working before I rooted and unlocked it. Most roms have all ads and bloat removed. HTC phones are pretty much meant to be rooted as HTC are one of the only ones left who aren't locking their phones down like Apple. I'm sorry if you are not happy with your purchase but it's not an iPhone. This phone is imo the best phone to ever hit the market. It will do so much more than an iPhone could ever think of doing. Email your videos if you need to send them. There are some look alike iPhone Emoji keyboards on the play store. You can even theme it like an iPhone. Just remember you are using an android now so it will be different. Stick with it and before you know it you will smile ear to ear once you see what this thing can do.

another for textra here, but just wanted to add to make sure you also install the textra emoji plugin. it might help your pain. imo splitting sms away from hangouts is a much better experience but different than apple.
where are you seeing ads? if you tell us we might be able to help point you in a better direction.

I recommend hello sms. Google hangouts also has emoji.
You're not locked down to any particular app. If you find yourself not pleased with one of the pre installed apps - do a Google search for "best replacement xxx app"

I use ChompSMS on my phones.
1. Root your phone
2. Flash a custom Rom to remove bloat
3. install Adaway to remove ads
4. use Google Hangouts or Textra for Emoji
it sucks that you need to do all that to improve your experience,I tip my hat for iphones they are clean and no bloat, but android is just so much better you can do whatever you want with it lol give it some time and you will start to adapt trust me i use both OS's and i love em both.
