AudioOut_1 the true silent battery killer - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Over the lasts months I have consistently watched the service AudioOut_1 eat the battery and it was often responsible for 20-25% of the used battery according to Better Battery Stats!
For those that dont know this service is responsible for handling the native sound services & can be controlled via the Settings / Audio and shut down things like Touch Sounds & Screen Lock Sounds. It sucks to say it but disabling these - which I like -dropped battery usage of that service to .05-2% a dramatic change seen in longer battery life at the end if the day for me.
I even tried just using mute in the Quick Controls but it appeared that in fact does not stop AudioOut_1 from actually firing the sound even if unheard.

No ramifications other than no more select sounds & better battery life.
Your not turning off AudioOut per se your adjusting the audio settings which then reducae AudioOut battery usage.
The real goal here was to educate those with wanting better batteryife to be aware of this hog & maybe bring light to what could be something that could use some improvement in terms of resource usage.

I told you and first mentioned this months ago when we talked about it. but you were bent on leaving the notifications on..lol. I already knew that audio out1 was the culprit. especially if you have notifications set to a shorter interval. your prime will wake up out of deep sleep like crazy. I cut off unneccessary notifications and vibrate and other b.s. sounds off. I just want my email or gtalk to make sound. I made the intervals for email longer also so it don't constantly go off at night waking prime out of deep sleep.
Another batter drainer is web surfing. if you constant browse the web, regardless of flash or not, it will drain really fast since its constantly eating up RAM. some browsers drain faster than others. opera mobile seems to work out good for me.

[Q] best way/tools to conserve battery(non-root)

I really like this phone but the battery drain is terrible. I have that verizon extended battery in it(2750mah) but even with that the phone will lose about 10% battery in about 1 1/2 hours during non-use and roughly double that if im browsing the web.
I have Battery Doctor and Juice Defender running at all times and disable anything i dont need to have running. Also, for some reason Battery Doctor does not display my current battery status accurately so i use a basic battery stat widget to know exactly how much battery is left.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what i should do? Apps i should use/not use? Oh and i do keep display brightness down and have done a full cycle charge.

I don't know if this would help/is recommended, but I decided to bump charge mine once. It seemed to help me out, but opinion seems to be split on whether it's good for the phone or not. I also use only friends and calender widgets, and about 4 toggles (airplane mode, gps, wifi, mobile). I generally turn off mobile network where wifi is available. I have been off the charger since 8 am and am at 83% with light use (a few texts, a little facebook, etc). I do use Watchdog lite (to watch for misbehaving apps) and autorun manager (to tweak what runs on startup). I should probably also mention that I have the stock battery.
Turn off 3g manual in settings.
Make the Radio do 3G Only.
Put the phone volume half way.
No vibrate when receiving a text and audio play after the text.
No vibrate feed back when touching the home,menu,back and search button Which can be found in settings>sounds>haptic feedback. Uncheck it

I have a stock battery.
I use the battery monitor widget to keep an eye on battery use and rogue apps. If I go over 50mA at idle, there's something that's running when it shouldn't.
I also have wifi sleep mode after 15 minutes of idle. And I keep blutooth and gps off. Also LTE only since i have excellent coverage here.
And i use Tasker to turn on airplane mode overnight (turns off all radios) and also silence all alarms, lights, vibration...
I get through about a day and a half of normal use no problem. Once cm7 is out i imagine i will get 2 or more days no problem, as it tends to idle at less than 10mA which would be a dramatic overnight difference.

Battery Usage Patterns

I thought I'd start a thread to track battery usage patterns, to see if we can identify some consistent... well... patterns across Primes. This is NOT meant to be a complaint thread, but rather to simply indicate how much battery is used per hour for given use cases. I realize there are bound to be many variations (e.g., how often email syncs, how many accounts are syncing, how much Flash is running, etc.), so I'm looking to just see if people are having the same range of experiences in terms of battery life.
Note: I believe that there's still quite a bit of tweaking to be done on how the Tegra 3 manages processor states. I think it spends too much time at higher states for some things, particularly browsing.
This is what I've found to be fairly consistent. All results are on lowest screen brightness except where noted, Balanced mode, undocked, in good wifi range, and running .15.
1. Standby (with wifi connected and background sync running): .3%-.5%/hour.
2. Light use (ebook reading, email, calendar, task managers, etc.): 7.5%-10%/hour.
3. Video (e.g., HBO Go in the browser, YouTube, Netflix): 10%-15%/hour, with brightness at about 30%.
4. Browsing (with Flash on-demand and moderately used, stock browser): 15%/hour consistently. Includes apps that use the browser, such as Google Reader.
5. Gaming (pretty much any game, from Angry Birds to Shadowgun): 30%/hour consistently.
6. IPS+ Mode and full brightness, light use: 30%/hour. IPS+ mode is a killer, but worth it to me for sunlight visibility when I need it.
For me, battery use is quite acceptable across all use cases except browsing. It makes little sense to me that viewing video (with higher brightness to boot, and including video running in the browser) would use less battery life than browsing--perhaps they've charged up processor speeds when the browser runs to overcome some inherent performance issues with it?
If you've made note of any consistent battery usage patterns like this, please report them in this thread.
These results are consistent with my experience, probably closer to 20% on the browser %. I'm also surprised at how quickly the browser uses up my battery. I've tried using different browsers and have noticed no appreciable difference. I've also set everything to manual sync, except for Gmail. I use the balanced mode with screen brightness set to approx. 30%. I almost never use Flash when browsing.
Nobody else wants to weigh in?

Naturally I don't particularly want to screenshot my usage over an entire week or anything, but here are my general figures so far on update .15 with all my apps as I see it.
Again, I don't have anything backing it up and haven't done detailed analysis on battery drain since .13, but I generally get 3 days with varying use including hard gaming for short stints.
1. Standby (with wifi connected and background sync running): .3% (pretty consistent, but some times the Prime won't enter Deep Sleep which unmercifully consumes)
2. Light use (ebook reading, email, calendar, etc.): 5%/hour
3. Video (Netflix): 8%/hour, with brightness at about 10%
4. Browsing (with Flash always-on and moderately used, Opera Mobile): 15%/hour
5. Gaming (set to Performance, OC'd to 1.6 gHZ): 35%/hour
6. IPS+ Mode and full brightness, light use: 40%/hour
My tab wont deep sleep only when docked. Sometimes I lose 4% an hour sleeping while docked.. pathetic. When not docked I can see with battery monitor widget that I lose 1% every 8 hours

Mine goes into deep sleep when docked no problem, and standby usage remains about the same.
But, I don't want to derail this thread. It's about usage patterns when undocked, specifically to avoid throwing the dock into the mix as another variable.
Just wanted to resurrect this thread, and ask if anyone is having a problem where reported battery life drops by 2% periodically instead of 1%. Seems like there's a glitch either in how the system is reporting battery life.

It's not updating or syncing or something? Do you use a real-time monitoring widget, or multiple diagnostics apps? These things will tax the system here and there for their information won't they?

I just use the Battery Drain app, and all it does is poll every minute to see what battery life is at. I suppose the app could be skipping a minute, but then I'd hope it would adjust and not report twice the usage/hour. And, I'm pretty sure I've caught the battery life dropping like that outside of the app.
Thing is that it's not just using more power per hour according to the app, but that it's dropping the 2%. Just a minor mystery...

I get about 7 hours of battery everyday through medium usage and my battery drains quite a lot when I am revising and listening to music. I have a 1900 battery instead of the stock 1650 and it does improve battery life but is there anything else I can do? I find it a bit stupid that my battery drains so much when I'm just listening to music!

Whats the signal strength like in your area? Aside from the screen (put screen brightness down), 3g seems to drain my battery most in weak signal areas, where the signal bars are continuously on 1 or 0. I put my 3g / data off and my phone can easily go hours before any drop in battery percentage, I got 4 days battery life with 3g off using it sparingly or wifi when i could to check my emails. Only other thing i did was calls and texts, but that was just as a test.
But i like to keep data on, and gps, all the time. I often get 4 hours screen time and approx 24 hours battery life with my 2000mAh Samsung battery.
Aside from that, last time i checked cm9 was a battery drain, may have moved on a bit.
the only real way you can save battery "during use" is with some restraint. Ie turn brightness down if screen is on, listen at lower volumes if it's playing music. The more voltage it's using the faster it drains. So less brightness or volume output = less power used.
7 hours is around the average use for battery life savy users around here. Even with the extended battery I'd say your right about on the money for battery use (based on what I assume you do and don't know at this stage). But there is certainly room for improvement .
Now before I go on, you probably won't notice any significant difference to battery life during use from these steps. My only hope is that in-between use it'll save more power, and squeeze out a bit more usage time for you.
First/easiest thing would be go to check if it's sleeping properly. Just don't use it for say an hour, then go to the battery monitor in settings. Check the screen on and awake times, they should be almost idenical. If there are several awake records in between screen on's, then you have a problem.
If you use sounds like unlock sounds etc, go turn them all off.. this was/pretty sure still is an issue in CM9 (causes audio_out1 to continuously wake up the phone from deep sleep and drains the battery like a mofo). Also getting rid of facebook (if it's installed) will help.. it loves waking the phone for no obvious reason.. even with every form of sync, background data, and mobile data in general turned off .
^^ you don't have to do that step but I'm pretty confident you'd have to anyway, so it's just easier to do it straight up. Then you can look for other problems.
Next, install "better battery stats". If you like to support developers, you can quickly buy it off the market. Otherwise it's free here if you search for the official thread.
Reboot your phone, then leave you phone for an hour or two, then check out whats happening in better battery stats. I'm not going to pretend I unerstand what half of the stuff it bangs on about is, but I digress. Select "since charged" and then check each different tabs of data (partial wakelocks, kernel wakelocks etc). You are really just looking for anything that stands out as a red bar basically. small amounts aren't a real worry/bound to happen. If it's bigger than say 1cm long, it's probably an issue. Then it's up to you to find out what the app/process is doing the damage . So either google or the better battery stats thread will be your friend at that stage. It was obvious what is was for me cause it said facebook but you might have a different experience.
Hope that helps. But the only way that's going to make a real dent would be trying to use it less.. lol.
Oh and if possible, turning on airplane mode would save a bit of battery in use. And of course the obvious ones like turn of wifi, gps, bluetooth, data, auto sync, soft key backlight and anything else you can turn off
Just do it what i say .. Download the full version of app. called juice defender from play store..install it and then see the magic by yourself ..i have been using the same ..it almost double up the battery backup through its advance settings.

Can someone explain how deep sleep works?

I've been playing around with Battery Monitor Widget to get an idea of battery usage and such (great app). I have a question regarding the term "deep sleep" and some notes regarding my battery history logs.
I've noticed that depending on when I check my battery history logs, I've seen drains go down to 2mA for periods of time when asleep. Some times, it kicks up to 150mA or so. Other times I'm seeing around 20mA during sleep. Often, I'll see 50mA, and slowly, over time it will start reducing to 19mA over an hour period or so (sometimes with WiFi and BT off). These are all logs from when the phone is sleeping.
Interestingly enough, if I remember correctly, I've seen the 2mA a couple times... even with WiFi and BT on. I've seen this reported for a good 30 minutes+ randomly. Any explanations and suggestions are appreciated.
I was wondering if there was a way to influence how fast the usage/power drain goes down during sleep, and if the 2mA stat is an example of this "deep sleep" term.
Update 1: I've disabled most of the bloatware (kept kies but not running; use t mobile visual voicemail and account app running). I turned off GPS, location services, BT, sync, etc. I am not using power saving mode but I did turn off haptic feedback and extra sounds, wake command, swipe command, etc.
I now get between -1 & -20 mAh draw on average while sleeping. Again, it seems to slowly go down from -20 over time. This should prove helpful on long jaunts away from a charger.
The reason why I am looking into this is because I will be camping... Sorta... and wanted to be able to use the phone for communication, GPS, etc.
Some notes of interest:
1. I explained to t mobile where I was going and they sent me an unlock code so I could use another Sim card while traveling (outside the USA).
2. Goal Zero Nomad 7 solar charger worked for charging the phone directly on a bright, sunny day... No go when cloud covered the sun on an overcast day. Haven't finished testing the Goal zero guide 10 battery pack yet... But it registered a charge for the 2 minutes I hooked it up without the solar panels.

[Q] Galaxy S3 Stock/CM10 drain?

I think we've ALL been here. Is there any uniform answer to this?
Let's be honest, I'm one of the not so frequent xda user, I always read several articles but have been, so far clueless.
I have the international model running on CM10 and constantly switch between ROMs of stock and CM, I've always liked AOSP ROMs, love the simple and uncluttered interface as opposed to the ever so bloated touchwiz. What else can I say? It has 32GB SD card and 16GB onboard storage, and it has a little trouble with 3rd party chargers (lose connection / disconnects every so often ) Its an old phone in technology time, but its still great.
So, I've tested wirh CM, stock and 2 other kernels which still make me feel like the phone is gobbling up a power plant everyday. One main culprit is Cell Standby which is very odd since it's usually just in my room (I use an other phone otg) and has a pretty decent signal (3-4bars)
On the most recent checks:
Cell Standby - 25%
Android OS- 18%
Screen - 15%
Google Services - 10%
Phone idle - 10%
Android System - 6%
And the rest are some of my apps..
I just recently started using Deep Sleep Battery Saver and wakelock detector. I'll send the info when the results are in for a day.
I'm not that fond of using 3G since data rates in my country are time-based and the KB-based pricing is off the charts. So I only use my phone for call and text and the occasional casual gaming and browsing (usually the cnet app)
I can only say that, if we could help on this either way, there are a ton of xda threads related to fast battery drain with varying issues because of Androids openness, I can only think if there would be some sort of centralized thread for this, or if you guys could help. That would be pretty awesome.

Cell standby will be highest because you don't use your phone.
It's not a culprit,it is normal that it is up on the chart
But if you are experiencing any battery drain of more than 1-1.5% on standby then you have to look for an app or similar service running in background otherwise there is no problem

I don't think so. I left my phone's battery last night at 29% and after waking up 6-7 hours later, I got 16% left.
So that's around 13% consumed in one night without using it, or 2-3% drain per hour.
I already greenified Facebook and Lookout which were the biggest wakelocks, deep sleep gave me no noticeable difference even on Slumberer mode. I'm suspecting this is due to cell standby. the location which my phone was in had 3/4 bars of signal, wifi and location services are also turned off.
What's the big problem here really? I suspected it may be due to facebook but nothing has changed so far
Update: Signal strength is 73-80+ dBm, When I got home today the phone was dead from 16% this morning. The highest consumer is Cell Standby at 26%, Facebook is already turned off and everything, Still no perf difference.
So I also have a friend on and he's got a GS4, battery life was terrible for him since the kitkat update.
