[Q] [IDEA] Dual-Boot

I am waiting for my Archos 70 to come in. It should be here the 6th. and I was just wondering would it be possible to dual-boot windows on it? Sorry if it sounds stupid but this is my first tablet and just wondered if it would be possible.
and the reason why i would like it is because I would love to run android as the main platform but would also love to be able to run certain programs like Rosetta Stone while I'm on the go.
Not until the ARM version of Windows becomes available. You might be able to CE but I haven't seen anyone do that yet. You will also need to install the SDE to dual boot.
sorry to sound noobish but what is sde and CE?

SDE is the "Special Developers Edition" of the Achos Firmware. You install it on your Archos & it will let you boot into a developer's menu which you can use to boot into other operating systems (at this point, Linux Based stuff including Android).
CE is the old-school embedable version of Windows that was used on PDAs & stuff 10 years ago. It is the precursor to Windows Mobile. It is still used in some cash registers & other specialty machines. Maybe you could manage to install it on your Archos...you won't be happy!
If I do use windows i will only use it when I want to use Rosetta Stone if it's compatible. But if we can do that we can switch between android and windows whenever we want?
NOOOOO.
You could only install Windows CE if ever.
And that is not a PC Windows.

I tried to search for you *which you might get flamed for by others for not doing first* but it looks like the general concencious is because windows mobile is a closed source there is no way for them to make the port over. the only reason people have been able to port android over to a window mobile phone is because its open source.
anyway why would you ever want to run windows mobile? even if you could find another phone close to it and somehow copy their winmo it would be buggy beyond comprehension with no way to fix
No as of now it cannot be done. Ive been hoping something would come along on Android that would allow ARM CPU visualization and emulated sound/graphics so that other ARM based operating systems like Windows Mobile, etc could be run without the need to emulate the CPU. This is similar to Virtualbox on desktops which will allow you to run x86/64 based operating systems at a decent speed since the CPU is virtualized.

Application Deployment on Windows 7

Hi everyone,
So I've got my Lumia 920, and I want to start developping some stuff... I registered to a developper account.
I'm working on Windows 7 (x64) computer, using Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone 2010.
WP8 SDK CANNOT be installed on a Windows 7 machine. So, no problem, I'll try with WP 7.1 applications.
The problem is:
- Zune CANNOT detect the lumia 920 on Windows 7 machine (maybe neither on a Windows 8 machine)
- Visual Studio NEEDS Zune to detect my phone in order to deploy application.
So basically, I just can't deploy anything on my phone on windows 7 can I ?

Yeah you're pretty much not able to do it. You can install Windows 8 as dual boot or in a VHD and do it that way. I don't think you can do it in a virtual machine because WP8 SDK requires to be installed on Windows 8 as the host OS in a Hyper-V environment. Easiest way to do it though is just to upgrade to Windows 8.

Thanks for the answer, that's what I thought... no real workaround then..
I'm using my work's computer, so I don't really have OS's choice (and having a W8 virtual machine running on it is not something I can consider)..
That's a shame though, that after buying a Lumia, buying a developper account, having a computer on Windows 7 I'm still unable to develop the way I want.. Anyway, nothing more to do except complain
I guess I'll just be coding at home.
You CAN deploy apps to WP8 on Windows 7 if you install Windows 8 as virtual machine. I have done this myself using VMWare Workstation.
Obviously, your PC have to support Hyper-V.
P.S.: You need to switch to "Exclusive mode" in the virtual machine and then Windows 8 will detect your USB connection.

That's good to know thanks !
Though I'm not sure my company would let me run a Windows 8 with my own licence on a VM. But maybe I'll find a way, thanks for the tip !

Trouble with installing Android on old PC

Hello there,
I'm having a problem. You can't call it problem, but I don't know how to.
I wanna to install Android x86 4.4 RC1 on our old computer, where is Windows Vista Home Basic installed.
The computer has got 25 GB free disk-space, so it wouldn't be a problem.
But I wanna have a DualOS, that means, I can select which OS the computer should start. I'll select between Windows Vista or Android.
Is there a solution?
