[Q] 4G LTE Modification - Motorola Photon 4G

Yes, I am fully aware that the Photon does not have 4G LTE capability AND this thread is not to debate over whether it really does have it or not because we ALL know it won't in its present condition, which is why I am asking...
Can we not give it LTE capability via antenna replacement? Is it not a matter of a driver and a new antenna or am I missing something?
I know Sprint won't be rolling out its LTE network for a while, but wouldn't it be something to explore?
I bring this up because it will be getting ICS in Q3 and being that that is happening, it might be worth keeping the MoPho for quite a while longer.
If it is a matter of only drivers and an antenna, I might explorer this modification this summer, but was curious to what you all thought?

Here comes the debate again. The hardware in our phone can *PHYSICALLY* be updated to work on LTE, *ON PAPER*. Is it realistically going to happen in the real world? Short answer. Not at all likely. As to your question about the antenna im intrigued and that'd be pretty awesome if it is able to be moderately easily done.

No this is not a debate re: LTE capability, I say this as I have corresponded with some close friends in Motorola that have looked over the engineering specs and it (according to the engineers) does not have LTE capability. Then again who knows but I didn't want to open this thread to that debate, too many of them as of this moment lol. As they may also have meant no updates for it. Regardless waiting for Moto or Sprint is not an option for LTE. I will edit the OP to state that more clearly.
So...
I thought it could be feasible, but I was wondering if it was also a driver issue, which wouldn't be hard considering there are Motorola LTE phones running blur, the antenna would be easy to manipulate to go inside the photon case, soldering might be required. If it is that easy to conceive, I would make a guide for it and post it on these forums.
However that is why I opened this thread, was to double check if that is all it was a matter of before I ripped it apart in July.

lets just put it this way, in all likelihood, the level of effort swapping hardware (not to mention the risk) and then writing the drivers to enable said hardware would be soo much work that its not going to be feasible for anyone.

right, but that isn't to say it is impossible, which is why i was inquiring about it.
Well if it is a matter of driver implication and hardware, then I will attempt it in July and make a little documentary on it for others if they want to try it, might be August though as I will have some trips ahead of me.

Gonna need;
IR laser soldering station and/or Reflow station
Micro soldering skills i.e. surgeon's hands
LTE capable chip (salvage device is your best bet as you tend to only be able to purchase these chips in 1000 chip lots minimum)
Cost- $$$$$

Thus, my question has been answered that it was not just a matter of drivers and antenna
T'is be a shame tho.

By the time LTE gets to you the phones out will make the Photon look so weak it won't even matter at that point. Photon will be a dinosaur.

SGS2 or HTC EVO 3d (Or are there really NFC Micro SD cards?)

So, I've been in a huge pickle between the SGS2 and the HTC EVO 3d. Since it releases tomorrow and I've had my current dumbphone for 2.5 years, I'm really hankering for an upgrade. Verizon has been a lot of headaches personally with constant dropped calls in my home.
Specwise, yeah I do prefer the SGS2 for the main reasons of battery life and NFC. But apparently according to some further research, NFC isn't enabled in all SGS2s?
But if someone here can straight out tell me that the EVO 3d has the battery life to get me through at least two days of casual usage (web(non-flash), Google Music, Facebook, SSH into my server, 1 or 2 games during the bus/train ride.) then I'm going for the EVO 3d on Saturday. (I graduate High School tomorrow )
I'm impartial to 3d. I like it's application in the 3DS and I like it's application in Avatar but I do not think it's meant for a home viewing experience. I honestly have never seen an EVO 3D so IDK even vaguely how it looks on it.
I <3 NFC is the main reason I like the SGS2. I love that I could just walk out of the house with just my phone. Forget wallets, forget keys and just live digitally. OFC when I run out of battery I'm done for but ehh
I'd love a suggestion or two and yeah I do realize that HTC hasn't unlocked their bootloaders yet but I have faith that root will happen eventually.
You may be waiting a while.. we don't know yet. No one can really help you decide on two phones when we have no hands on info on one of them.
The only thing I will say, it we have no idea when the SGSII will be out. Are those features worth waiting up to 6 months to move into the next phone?
By the time out the next big phone will be right around the corner.
I agree with shadow. If they (Sprint and Samsung) delay the release of the SGS2 then it will be too late and a dollar short. But then again there's only two phones anyways; experimental and obsolete.
Epic 2 announced. 1.2 GHz SINGLE CORE Fail

As long as the Within is indeed the SGSII and it's coming out soon, then I'm happy.

Hi ColdH33t, Yes there are really NFC-microSD cards which will enable phones without NFC functionality to become enabled. Our company has the product and are working on making available to everyone for sure this year. Please visit the XDA thread below where I'll post full details after my 10th post:

Hi Reaperofsouls06, I'm not trying to promote something I'm selling. I was responding to some inquiries made by forum members about the NFC microSD and was trying to give info as to why it is not yet in public everywhere in the market, and how our company has been pushing to make it happen, but have encountered obstacles (especially with the bigger players pertaining to the same product), and what our plan was to get a "universal"/ "open" version (which isnt controlled by the Big Companies, or Mobile Operators) to the market this year hopefully, and also have a "Developers" option, where we will have the codes available for Developers/programmers, which the bigger companies would not do.
I did not mean to come off as trying to sell a product.

**OFFICIAL** What Phone Should I Buy?

Attention!
In light of all the posts that are deleted and/or closed due to many off-topic posts about what device a person should buy, I have created this official thread.
Although XDA is not a place to extensively talk about what device person should buy, some forums permit it. So to help keep the threads a little cleaner, you may post your questions here.
Granted there are other sites more into device reviews and comparisons, but in the interest of keeping some people happy, and to avoid getting posts deleted, this thread is created for people who have no idea what device to get.
In the end, you should still march your happy self to a shop, and play with the devices that are available. Only then will you be satisfied with your purchase.
Any posts elsewhere asking such questions, that should be in this thread, will still be deleted or closed. This includes posting multi-duplicated posts in several forums outside of official threads.
Thanks, and Hope you use this.
A gsm user should not buy photon, i am photon user and i`m planning to sell it as soon as possible. Made some research i`m gonna buy samsung galaxy S sgh T989
First Moscow Desire, Thank you!Since the announcment of possible Photon sequel there are at least 3 running threads on the same subject.
I'm mixed to be honest, the spec's on the new EVO are hot. The "reported" specs on the sequel Photon Q 4G LTE look hot also. Giving a choice, if the Photon keeps CDMA/GSM and kickstand, Photon it is!

Until you're quad-core, I put MoPho up there with anything. There are kernels out to get 1.4ghz which on a tegra2 is more than adequate. For half (or better) the money Photon has HUGE value. SGS3 is right around the corner, though, and we have to expect that several other Quad's are right there with it. (obviously pertaining to US domestic carriers) Waiting is probably the best option, but if that is not an option, the MoPho is serious.

So, what do the new phones do that the Photon does not do in its size/form factor? I have all the memory and CPU power I need now. Wrt my Intel desktops, I reached the same point several years ago - a quad core 8GB box is more than I need. I understand that some people want more for (1) valid uses like gaming and simulation, (2) hobby purposes - just want to have the latest & I acknowledge as a geek that this is a valid reason!
Serious question - I carry an ultralight laptop (Win7), tablet (ICS) and a phone. My Photon's screen is perfectly sized for a phone and my pocket, but not big enough for other uses - BUT, my pockets are not big enough for a tablet. So, my phone is pocketable, while tablet and laptop go in the briefcase/bag.
IMHO, Android phones have peaked in terms of size/performance for a pocketable device. They are commodities now - what am I missing?

Like your post. Agree.
But - what am I going do with a quad-core and a 4" screen? My second core is rarely used today! 1 or 2 cores seems to be plenty for a 4.x" screen. Battery tech is NOT keeping pace with more cores in a pocketable phone. Thoughts?

Photon would be great, until the *censored* upgraded the bootloader to a locked version, incapable of an OEM unlock.
I absolutely love my Photon 4G. By far the fastest phone I have ever owned. Especially with the Dual Core and the official ICS being released in Q4 from Motorola.

Is a used Photon right for me?
Hey all...
I'm on Sprint and I have about 17 months left in my contract. I used to have a Samsung Galaxy S2, which I really liked, but I lost it and have had to go back to my old HTC Hero (yikes).
Anyways, so I was going to buy another Galaxy S2, seems like used ones go for around $225 - $250 on ebay, but then I realized that I'm planning a trip to Europe (Iceland and Germany) this summer, and my girlfriend has a CDMA phone (Verizon Galaxy S3, which is a great phone but too much $$$ for me to buy off-contract). I'm hoping to buy prepaid simcards in Iceland and Germany, so I can use data while I'm out and about (especially maps).
So it seems like the Photon is the only recent Android phone on Sprint that has GSM support, and it's a bit cheaper that the Galaxy S2 on eBay. From what I've read online, it seems like the phone is a good choice, with more or less the same specs and screen size as the Galaxy S2. Can anyone give me some advice?
The potential downsides I am worried about are:
The Photon is officially at EOL. (I don't care that much if it works well.)
It seems like there were some conflicting reports about whether the Photon supported GSM 1800? But more recent posts I've read seem to indicate using a prepaid simcard in Europe mostly just works (maybe with having to run a utility to tweak ASNs).
It might not ever get the ICS update. (I don't really care that much - I'm happy using Cyanogen or a similar ROM if I need to.)
It kind of seems from this forum like people are ditching this phone in droves.
Some people seem to think this phone is kind of unreliable.
As far as my usage, I mostly run fairly simple apps like maps, foursquare, nytimes and the web browser, but I like those apps to run fast. Games are not my top priority but I like them OK.
Are there any other GSM / "world" phones on Sprint that might be worth looking into?
Photon is very good one
i've been using this phone for 2 weeks, i've trying different ROMs, it's amazing how this phone is rock and fast.
the only problem that i've faced with it is when i unlocked it i've lost the 4G. no way to get it back as you want to use it with any GSM carries in the USA.
but anyone who lives out of US will not face this problem as he will not have to unlock it.
---------- Post added at 02:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:08 AM ----------
Moreover, it supposed to be an official ICS for photon after 2 months and i'm waiting it.
Now all the available ICS for this phone have major bugs.
imo...
ive owned many android phones between me and my wife weve had pretty much every phone from sprint, using the upgrades every year.......she has a s2 i have a photon (atm)
her s2...unrooted stock has an amazing screen very vivid decently fast no lag from what ive seen, sprints 3g blows no 4g in my area and wifi ( my wifi router) blows major ballzack... you can buy one of these (s2) from bestbuy using an upgrade/or new 2yr agreement right now for $49.99.. the photon for $29.99.... the photon as long as it doesnt come loaded with the new ota is a amazing purchase for 29.99 with the ota expect to only be able to root for now until someone fingers unlocking out....but the photon is incredible fast when i first bought it running stock and no root i was amazed at how snappy and receptive it was.... everything loaded so fast (coming from a htc hero mind you ), net was loaded decentl;y quick and the screen was very bright... then i rooted unlocked and flashed roms....(even built a few) still photon impressed me any issues i had charge that puppy up sbf and start all over neverbrick if you would......so many options with from ics,jb,miui, aokp's,PA, **** man list goes on and on..........and with the future promise of a stoock ics the photon is one hell of a purchase.....however......
im up for an upgrade and im looking at the s3 intently....... but at same time im wanting to wait for the next best thing...thought would be the PQ but after reading and reading on the specs and what can be expected of/from it IJDK......thinking of getting away from motorola since they have been so uncooperative with unlocking the bootloader and system updates
I personally think no phone right now is a significant upgrade from the Photon, however my mind might change once the Note 2 or the next Nexus device comes out. A lot of current phones are using older gpus which aren't a big step up from the Tegra, however the new Adreno and Exynos GPUs are supposed to come out towards the end of the year which is a bit exciting.

I agree this does make me feel better but since the 3d now has plenty of working ICS builds i'm starting to think i might not NEED my evo lte. Considering dumping the preorder. I don't see much difference between the two now that i have ICS. Any thoughts? LTE non nonexistent , NFC (at least where i'm at) is also non nonexistent.
I do like the slightly bigger battery, and krait seems power friendly.

I'm buying it, but only because it's the next big thing. I'll probably order it this weekend, and sell my EVO 3D next weekend with all of it's accessories to pay for it.
I like the larger battery. The processor is a huge upgrade. Sense 4.0 with ImageSense will definitely be useful (I have a daughter and I'm always taking pictures when we're out. Although, I just bought a $1000 DSLR, but I don't like dragging it everywhere with me). The fact that this model has an SD card slot, AND 16GB onboard is a big selling point for me as well. 4.7" screen gives me more viewing area (I'd get a note, but I don't think I could EVER get out of having HTC Sense).
Yeah i forgot about the camera that is another big plus. Something else i've always wondered was the B!tch Everyone has for the non removable battery. On my OG Evo i had 6 batteries i carried around with me all the time. I hated that. Why not just buy one of those recharge packs and if you need battery in a pinch use that. So many ppl i've seen are throwing this under the bus because of not being able to remove the battery.

Its permanent. There is also a temp custom clockwork recovery that they are using to flash ROMs. They have a couple guys who have S-off on their phones but its still a WIP to get the bootloader unlocked. Looks really good for EVO LTE owners so far.
I am still on the fence about getting it. Due for my last yearly upgrade on June 1, but with the ICS leaks and the impending official release, I think I will be good for at least a little while longer. This phone getting root would drive my decision a little further to one side or the other.
Another point I forgot to mention is ACTUALLY having a true Beats capable phone. Not kinda works/kinda doesn't.

To continue being a smartphone user....

Well I start a new job in the next couple of weeks where I can't bring my cell phone into the facility, but I also get an upgrade in August. I'm not going to be able to use my phone for 60% of my awake time but all the sexy new phones are sitting pretty. SGSIII, DInc 4g... etc. Is anyone else in this situation of very limited use of phone? I'm trying to justify paying an exta 30 bucks a month for data I'm not gonna use. I also have a tablet so it's not like I'm dropping our android friend.
Well, if you don't run into a lot of situations outside home where you need data access, then I would say it isn't worth it. Also, what kind of job doesn't allow cell phones? That seems a little extreme, so curious behind the reasoning.
I'm a contractor and when we do jobs for the state (Prisons), no cell phones are allowed inside. It really sucks lol.

HTC has been really struggling lately, and now with OnLive costing them $40 million, things are definitely not looking good.

Ouch, definitely doesn't sound good. Not sure if they will be able to stay in it or not...depending on how this whole Apple/Samsung thing turns out, they may be able to use it to their advantage, but it sounds like they've got some pretty big issues to deal with. I think I'm already pretty much resigned to getting whatever Samsung's offering is when I'm eligible for my next upgrade. I had a tough time choosing this time around anyway, so I figure I'll give them a shot (never owned a Samsung)...but it sounds like that may be the "only" option if things don't improve for HTC.

Good, sometimes drastic things need to happen before a company makes drastic changes necessary.
I guess it is what it is. I am happy with the EVO LTE. I'm going with a Nexus next time around since they will hopefully be beyond the stupid pentile screens by then. Maybe we will get lucky and HTC will get a Nexus at some point in the future.
If rim and Nokia are still in business I think htc will be OK for now.. they do need to start making better decisions and listening to their customers ..they are still turning almost a billion dollar profit this quarter ..still pretty good
A company thats making a profit is about to collapse? Really? Please Explain:cyclops:
fail
how can they be making a profit and collapsing at the same time
do you even read and think before you decide to spread such garbage?
They're hurting, but I have high hopes that they come back even stronger. They need to make a few adjustments to the way they work, and it can make all the difference. For one, be as dev friendly as they used to be. Second, less device models as they made it seem like they were going to do. They need to cut as much variants out, and focus on keeping close to the same phone amongst different carriers. That's my opinion.

i agree with your last point
Haha I love how people read a comment in an article and then talk like it's their comment.
You guys don't think a company can collapse when turning a profit? Really? How about when your profits rapidly decline quarterly, and the government is helping bail you out? Look at the trends, and you'll see why they're collapsing.

I think HTC needs to start making phones out of plastic cause obviously no one cares what they're made off cause no one's buying them.

It's funny because you probably didn't even read the article.
They're making a profit, but they're still a shadow of their former glory. Their market share has plummeted and it isn't showing any signs of improving. Just because they're still pulling in money doesn't mean that everything is sunshine and rainbows for them.
HTC is still a profitable company, but with such relentless competition from Samsung and Apple, their numbers are dropping fast enough that banks are beginning to get very nervous. This could quite literally be the beginning of the end.

This indeed sucks but at this present time all i can ask for is that they release Jelly Bean before they close the doors..My wife sold her iPhone and bought the Galaxy S3 and i've been playing with it here and there and its an awesome phone...I was amazed that a stupid kitty cat live wallpaper runs flawlessly with out slowing down the scrolling on the phone..I think I may have seen the light and sipped on some of the Kool-aid..Im kinda envious
HP just took a multibillion dollar write down because of the EDS acquisition, but this was an excellent strategic investment. HTC is doing the same thing. They might be down, but they're not out.

I don't think that HTC is going to go out of business. I'm hoping that they can come up with something that can stabilize them a bit. In my opinion they need to make like Samsung and give their phones more of an identity.
They need try harder to keep their phones in order instead of releasing 20 different devices. They've taken a step in the right direction with the One series, but the naming is way too confusing for most people to be able to tell what the phone is all about. HTC needs a way to make a budget, mid-end, and high-end phone that isn't different on every carrier and that represents itself well.
With the One series, you have the One X, the One XL, the One S, the One V, and I'm sure that the upcoming/rumored One "XL+" (or whatever we call it) will join that lineup as well. The names just have no way of differentiating themselves without looking into the specs. If you walked up to someone and said, "Do you want the One V or the One S?" They're going to say, "Huh? What do the letters mean?"
But with all of the growth that Samsung has seen, I'm not sure that HTC will ever be able to catch up.
That settles it...I am buying a spare Rezound

I agree. But Sense is why most brought the phone, right?

No... Many people on this site will likely say they bought it for the hardware, not software. This is a development forum. We know Sense can be ripped away (or at least shrink and improved).
