Walt Mossberg tests the Samsung Galaxy Note. says it's like talking into toast.

Those two people sitting next to each other are VERY annoying.
A lifelong apple fanboy who worships Steve Jobs doesn't like an android phone, shocker!
Seriously, normal people buy a phone for its features. If you care what you look like holding the phone then you have larger psychological issues you need to work on.

Hahaha I think the exact same thing when people complain about how they look with it by their head. I can't believe someone would care about that I personally don't think I'd honestly take that into consideration when making a purchase for a phone especially when the size gives it so many advantages.
Walt also smashed the Dell Streak in the same manner. Just remember he is from a time when microwaves and televisions were not a standard home accessory. Really an iPhone would seem great to someone who is just getting acclimated to technology.
Honestly, I don't think it's totally ridiculous to be concerned about how one looks talking on a phone. It's no different from caring how you dress or what accessories you wear--and make no mistake, a phone is an accessory just as much as a bracelet or necklace. It's not a big deal to me personally, but I do think I'd be a bit self-conscious if I were walking down the street and talking on my Note.
From my perspective, people on both sides are blowing the thing out of proportion. Like so many other things, it's just a matter of personal preference.
versus a deck of cards like iphone? I'll take the toast!

And I completely understand your point and respect it I agree it comes down to the person but as for myself I really don't care what other people think. People where I live have to "have" the iPhone because it the "cool" phone to have and I expect to catch crap because of the notes size but personally I know that the phone will be very productive for myself as I have large hands making it very frustrating to use an iphone. But again back to personal preference all to their own I just personally will not conform to society and do as I please and what makes me happy and not care what some random person thinks. Personally I find things much easier that way.

Who ever said thoughtful discourse was dead?
You're kidding yourself if you think that people around you won't see you using your phone and make judgments based on it and its appearance. You don't have to care about those judgments, but they're happening either way, just as people form opinions based on what you're wearing. If nobody cared about how phones look, there wouldn't be a white Note or a purple RAZR, and I'm willing to bet there would also be fewer iPhones than there are now.
I'm not advocating choosing a phone based on its appearance alone, and I'm here because I preordered a Note for myself. Obviously a phone does a lot more than a jacket or a necklace and should be given commensurately more consideration. That doesn't mean everyone needs to shut their eyes, plug their ears, and shriek when presented with opinions that don't coincide with their own.
Yeah I'm going to feel self conscious when using it too, but really, who talks on their phone anymore anyway? If in my car, BT, if on my desk, spkr.
I don't get that many calls anyway.
I can't wait to gaze into that huge screen!
OK, so I have never felt the need to make a pointless thread till now...
I was out at the bar tonight, surrounded by iPhone people....going on and on about how they had one problem or another with whatever random android they had and how suddenly their iPhone solved everything.... And they were saying "oh, our phone is so much faster than yours"
So i made them all download linpack and blew each of them away by double...
Perhaps it doesn't mean much, but it shut them up

Yay, a grid of icons on top of icons! The solution to all of life's mobile phone problems. Oh, and a robotic sounding woman you can have "conversations" with.
The reason why Apple is so successful is because the notion of "choice" is too much for the average person to handle. I understand the lack of common sense and willingness to do a little legwork when purchasing things that most of society has, but having ONE phone and ONE computer is preferable to anyone in the entertainment business than shuffling through the hundreds of Android phones. Especially since they're catering to the society I wrote about. They will know what an iPhone is. They will not know what __insert_stuipd_android_device_name_OEMs_who_don't_understand_how_the_world_works_come_up_with is.

Better to have Iphones than the stupid symbian Nokia phones............
My town is surrounded by Nokia phones and some chinese/indian crap......
Though the problem is that here a basic phone without camera and some basic features costs at 2000-3000 rupees (40$-60$) while the evo 3d was around 49$(contract) in USA and is around 700$ (without contract) in india , I would have purchased so many phones at this cost if that contract thingy would have been available here...

No you wouldn't because they are ,like you said, contracts . That means you can only get a device at that price once every two years once the contract ends.
The reason so many more people appear to have iphones is Apple advertises everywhere. People want a brand name they can trust and they all love their ipods for music, so why not get an iPhone. Then the old yoga moms who bought it rave about their new smartphone to all their clueless friends, who tell even more people, until apple phones are owned by every clueless person in the US. Then Apple decides it's time to implement project X, a top secret project that uses siri to take over its users like a parasite and TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! Well sort of anyway...
Yeah, idk, I just enjoyed it because they all had to admit my 3d blew their iPhone away... And you guys are right, it is brainless... Have you ever seen two iPhones that look different? Nope, they are all set up to be huge app drawers... Idk, I like having a bookmark and a calendar widget.... I like being able to make it my own and not just follow suit....

How incredibly humble of you
Apple has carved an image for itself, and it does it's job very well, and people from all walks of life has iPhones, from trashy people, to incredible smart. Some people just don't care about customisation and are more interested in a complete solution with little fuss. This does not make them brainless.
the main reason i keep seeing these lil girls get iphone is because its a status symbol , ppl think if you have an iphone ur cool or going to get more *****, that phone is plain out boring when its up against a high end android.

How DARE you display objectivity, blasphemer! The iPhone is for the feeble minded and Android for the intellectual elite.
I think people chose iphone forbthe same reason i dont root my phone. Not everyone has hours a day to waste altering these phones or can afford for something to stop working. People say rooting your phone makes it better and faster. How much faster can it get seriously? I mean my epic touch is fully stock with 1000 songs and plenty of pics and videos and sometimes it seems like it selects what i want before i even swipe it. Every other thread on xda seems to ke oh i flashed this rom and my camera stopped working my wifi stopped working my voicemail stopped working im not getting my notifications stuck on htc screen or whatever else can go wrong. Im only 26 but i have a gf and a 1 year old son. Some people cant afford to have dumb **** like that go wrong. I need everything on my phone working all the time. Im not worried about the latest theme and if i was that worried about ics id go by a galaxy nexus.

Cool story? Trust me depending in the Roms the phone actually shows significant performance over the stock . You don't actually spend hours a day switching. Or whatever. Just download follow simple steps and go.
Most times the rom is perfectly working for users. Just some people don't read the change logs on what works or not.
And I have-not seen that many oh my wifi or whatever is not working threads.
Unless you take advantage of rooting you probably arnt the one to talk about these customization steps, goes for the iPhone users alike.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
Alright so after reading this thread which has a slight undertone of hate both ways, here is what I've gathered....
iPhone: For people who want things done for them... They don't want to worry about every detail (big or small) of their phone, don't mind little customization, and follow a 'trend' (if you will). At the same time, everything is easier to use, because it is less complicated and everything is right there. The phone that is already 'set-up'.
Exclude the whole concept of Jailbreaking your iPhone. If you jailbreak it, you are basically making it an Android anyways -_-. Making it Open-source so you can add MODs from Cydia to it for a little more customization and control. Sounds like browsing XDA looking for new things for your phone, hm.
Android: Contrary to the iPhone... For people who want to take control of their phone. In every aspect. Having a phone that really reflects you and shows your personality. Something you can tinker with for endless hours ALWAYS finding something new. You don't mind the 'kinks' of rooting and ROMs, because you like the need to fiddle with your phone. All around, you're more alert to everything going on in that phone of yours. The parts waiting to be perfectly put together.
Don't get me wrong. Android is fully functional. What I meant by the part thing is; everything is ready to go, but it needs a little extra to get it how you want it.
Which one is better....? I personally like Android because of all the things there are to, and the very thin boundaries (if there are any) to what you can't do. However the iPhone offers a very refined experience that isn't anything to scuff at. I do not find the iPhone faster either. There are plenty of tests to show otherwise. It wouldn't be fair to compare a low-end Android so assume I'm talking about the SGS2, Galaxy Nexus, etc. And if there is any difference in visual speed (which isn't totally reliable) it is honestly a hundredth of a second or less. Processor wise Android destroys iOS. Visual smoothness iOS at times over throws Android. Overall they're both good platforms (and I have used both for over 6 months).
Now if more iPhone users could realize that Android is just as good as iOS. Then we could finally get them to shut-up about what their pre-personalized phones can do.
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
AOKP (Build 28)
Air Kernel (3.45)
OC 800/100 (Noop)
Live OC (100)
v6 Supercharged
Chainfire 3D (Force GPU)
I'd never buy an iPhone, or Apple product, for that matter. That said, had I been one of those people who just lost the linpack challenge, I would promptly have asked you to open your web browser, or home screen and take the lag challenge, to which you would have failed miserably.

Right when I saw Eric: I said no. Just no.
Kinda cool. Wonder how hot it gets?
I have never payed more than $30 for a watch. Why do I need one with apps or customizable display. That's what I have an Android phone for. I mean unless they eventually turn this into an actual wrist phone, I don't see myself ever being interested.
Sent with a Rezounding HELL YEA!
Seems excessive and gimmicky. It's like having a cell phone for my cell phone. Why mount this watch on my bicycle when I can just mount my cell phone on my bicycle? Waste of money in my eyes.
Already a backer
I'm already a backer, can't wait to get one.
I won't lie, it's a niche accessory and a little pricey.
But i think we might find some really novel uses for this.
and if they become popular prices could drop for similar
watches in the future.
I really have no use for one even though I'm a huge gadget freak. I'll admit it would be cool to have but it'll probably be one of those things where the novelty runs out quickly and after like a month or two you'll be like why did I buy this? I can't even imagine trying to type on that thing.
Honestly, I think I would take the MotoActv over the Pebble. MotoActv runs a full Android OS, and has better integration with Android phones and more features overall than the Pebble watch does.
It'd be nice if it also integrated with wireless heart rate monitors (common for runners). My fiance has the monitor and it comes with its own watch, but its entirely observational - has no recording capability. Since this thing connects to your phone, it could store your exercise stats in an app.
But thats IF it could connect to both your phone and heart rate monitor simultaneously. I wish the monitor would connect to the phone, but no app available and pretty sure its RF instead of bluetooth.
ooooooo. i need the red one.
Dumbest thing ever

For those who've never had to deal with their phone being stolen.. it's kinda like this...for me anyways.
You soon realize that some random dude: did, can and could be - right now- looking through your private files, has access to phone numbers, pictures, videos, e-mails, and voice-mails. Oh, and did I mention all of your SD card contents? In my case my external sd =16gb of pure music..
You're lucky if you haven't experienced this and I'd definitely recommend some sort of remote wipe application.. since this could happen to anyone, anytime.
It really sucks. Especially when right after you lose it, you decide to call (hoping to hear that old ring from deep between the seats) and listen in disbelief as someone actually answered! You now come to the realization that some piece of **** has stolen your phone and actually answered *a* (your) call, and is completely clueless of how to hang up. As you stand at a payphone shouting and yelling in what feels like your toughest, manliest voice, demanding the return of your phone at once.. you know it's g-o-n-e.
Anyways.. sorry about that. Had to get that off my chest :crying:...
So anyways.. with the Rezound forum having turned into a ghost town of sorts and many cool phones having come out or planned to.. What would you do? So far I replaced 1 Rezound so this would be my third! I'm thinking of going a diff route this time to be honest.. and since I haven't been keeping up with the latest news and stats of phones.. maybe I can get some opinions/ideas/help from some fellow Rezound owners :fingers-crossed:
Here's some info:
- I have insurance through 'Protect Cell' (awesome by the way!!). It will cost me somewhere between $100-125 for a *Brand-new* non-refurbished Rez to show up next day.
- I can use an upgrade from Verizon :victory:
- I prefer newer/newest phones so I don't have to think about upgrading too soon.
- Price isn't really an issue but I do want to stay with Verizon since I have unlimited 4G data :silly:
- I love rooting and modding/customizing my phones!
Thanks everyone for reading this thread and taking the time to share your opinions. !!

I had this happen with my DInc, it was a sad moment in my life. I had just put in a new digitizer and front housing piece so the phone looked brand new!, Got myself an otterbox case for the phone, and rooted the heck out of it. Nest thing ya know its gone a week later and I'm purchasing a Thunderbolt to replace it! It was heartbreaking because I just made it so beastly and then someone else reaped the benefits of it. Good thing I didnt have any Pics or anything on it, Although they did get away with my 16GB Memory Stick :-/
Sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the pain in ass that must be. It's not just the time you put into the phone but all the personal stuff. I just don't get why people don't do the right thing and return the phone. Regardless I still retain some faith in humanity and will always place my name with an alternate phone number on my lock screen. Either get another rezy and wait for next nexus or get gs111?
I just had this happen to me a couple of weeks ago. Went out bar hopping and must have left it on the bar and somebody swiped it. Not only did they go to my facebook and post all kinds of gay **** they emailed all my work contacts with vulgar messages. I had Lookout Security on it so I could locate it, then i remote wiped it. I was going to go to the location of the phone myself but thought better of it, I would have killed that little punkass thief. So, I let the police go retrieve it for me. But, Lookout Security definitely worked great. It allowed me to track the phone in realtime from their website.
But in regards to what I would do if I was you, I'd go with a SGS3 or a GNexus on Verizon, if you're a person who likes to be a member of a forum that is actually alive. This forum is basically dead.

Thanks for your response. To touch on the refurbished issue- I can assure you that the replacement I received was a BRAND new Rezound. The only thing is they don't send you an ext SD card with it. What you DO get is a new battery and phone and that's about it (my replacement was for a water-damaged phone). I wonder since the phone is stolen will they send me an SD card along with the phone this time.. that would make sense..? I was pretty bummed when my first replacement was missing the SD card!! I was like holy s*** an extra one! WOOT! but.. then no SD in the package :\ I had my original so I can't complain/be greedy
About unlimited- so that's how it is now??? Before when upgrading and not changing your account data/minute plans would result in keeping your original plan- even if it was now discontinued (grandfathering is what I've heard it called)... in my case it was the unlmtd 4g.
If I understand you correctly- you're telling me that ANY phone upgrade through verizon (with or without upgrade date discount/renewal of contract) it will in-fact change your data plan -- in other words- no matter what you can't avoid it??? Dude.. NOOO!!! that screws me in getting a brand new phone through an upgrade date... And obviously buying private or online etc. used, it will be more expensive versus upgrading at the verizon store and getting brand new I can't imagine using a phone with a limit on my data.. I use an OBSCENE amount of Data. I have never enabled Wi-fi on my phones.. ever. Ever!.. So now I have some thinking to do.. anything else i should know? is there anything I/we can do to keep unlimited besides buying outside of verizon
Let's just put it that way.
Thank you again for taking the time to respond and I appreciate you letting me know that important fact!
And yes, ProtectCell is one of the best decisions and purchases I've made. Overnight shipping, brand new phones, and secure shipping accompanied by great customer service. It's just easy and the smart thing to do. Wow I sound like a commercial! LOL

LOL

hey man, i've been trying to get some members into PC when they get their new phones, so them seeing your awesome experience might help them decide to grab it through me!
and that's awesome you got a new phone! i honestly thought it was refurbs. that's great to know.
yep, using the upgrade drops your unlimited as of June 28th so yeah, you might wanna stick with it and buy phones off contract, or used etc.

if you use an upgrade and get a discounted phone from verizon, you are forced off of unlimited. You can pay full retail at verizon without problems or get your phone from another source. Basically, if you renew your contract, unlimited is gone.

Which is complete bull****, but when people are using over a terabyte of data in a month (which is ****ing stupid) I begin to understand why they made this choice

In my case my external sd =16gb of pure music.

They are annoying as hell
Have you ever tried AndroidLost before? Awesome app..
Wheres my Droid is a good app also. The pro version has a remote wipe feature.
In hindsight, why didn't you pretend to be one of his friends when he answered the phone. Find out his name it where he even was. That sucks though. You gotta utilize opportunities man.

Lookout has an app called Plan B. Wonder if that would help you find your phone.

I have to admit they are pretty annoying and I never liked them. When I got home I suspended my service without bill pay.. and that was all I could do so I really regret not downloading an app with features like remote wipe and gps tracking as has been mentioned.
So if I'm completely understanding this data conundrum.. you can't avoid it because you will have to renew your contract eventually at some point and then poof :/
I keep thinking about how it would suck to buy a phone that's been out for a bit to miss out on a newer one due to $. So, seeing as how it's only $120 for a new rezound, it could be the wiser option.
I don't know the prices of the phones you guys mentioned in used/like New/ and *New* (unopened box by private party) conditions are though so gotta do some research.
I like the rezound but to say I haven't wondered what a different phone would be like would be a lie.
I just hope this thread can serve as a reminder to someone out there who's delaying getting an app for situations like this. I didn't think this could or would happen to me.. my phone and I were inseparable. Don't learn the hard way when you can learn from my mistake
This community is awesome too. It's sad thinking about leaving :/ Supportive, friendly and close-knit.

I was going to say the remote install feature here could be a life saver. Unless you wait too long. Then they might have time to wipe it.
Well I've had the rezound since it came out and I always loved it. But it's a little outdated now and development has slowed quite a bit. So I'm thinking about getting a new phone.
I'm 99% sure I'm not gonna get the iPhone, even though I love my iPad and MacBook I think android is better than the iPhone.
The galaxy nexus is one of my top choices but I think they might be coming out with a new one soon and I would rather wait.
The s3 is my top choice as of now.
I don't see any reason to get the d inc lte.
I'm looking for battery life that is better than my rezound. I would like a decent screen but it's not that important. Most importantly I want the phone to be smooth and fast. And I would love something that is getting jb.
So what do you think? Keep the rezound or get another phone? Any suggestions other than what I listed?
Thanks!

Honestly i would wait for the next nexus device and cross my fingers its made buy htc lol. I love sense and all but i really like the fact that a nexus is made exactly for that version of android at the time and is still in mind when they make a new os. Like the nexus s came with gingerbread, then ics, and will soon get jellybean i here. I mean 3 os updates and it runs even better than when it came out with gb, unlike many other phones (not the rezound) when they get a os update they start to usually slow down because its not made with that os in mine. But thats just me lol
Thanks! I think I'm gonna stick with my rezound for now. If the one x comes to Verizon I'll get that
Unfortunately they've already said Sammy's making the next Nexus.
Actually I guess that's not official... Just based on a leaked Samsung spec sheet.

I've fought tooth and nail defending this phone for its outstanding hardware, but I'm starting to think it may be time to throw in the towel. The radios have amazing signal compared to Samsung. Problem? My strong as hell 4G signal stalls constantly. It never drops, just stalls all communications. I was so happy to see data stalls listed as fixed on this new ruu leak, but its completely untrue. No change. Not to mention the kernel drama. Still runs hot as hell. My respect for HTC has gone straight out the window this time. Not even aosp can redeem it for me now. So in short, I'm ready for a New phone as well and tell you go for it.

I bought a new iPhone for my sister a few months ago. I was setting it up for her and had it side by side next to my Rezound for about 4 or 5 days. I was just shocked at what a piece of crap it was. The screen was so small, it was like holding a kids toy or something. Honestly, it was painful to look at with its tiny, tiny screen.
3G just sucks. Granted, it was on Sprint's network (which I hear is not as good as Verizon) but 3G just sucked. Slow, spotty... Downloading apps seemed to take forever compared to my blazing fast 4G.
No widgets? WTF? I had to click on 3 or 4 things just to get to a Bluetooth control panel - my Rezound has a link right to the Bluetooth control panel on the homescreen. I love the big clock/weather widget on my homescreen, and having 4 different apps I can immediately go into during an unlock is terrific.
I have a few friends who have iPhones. One day, one of those guys who does sales (and is kind of an ass) started projecting that "I'm awesome because I own and iPhone and I love it and I love me and Im soo dam kewl" attitude - and I just tore him to shreds with the above three points.
He countered with "Well, I use iTunes and all my stuff is there and it magically appears in my iCloud, bla bla bla". I admitted he did have a point, but I ripped into him about how much iTunes sucks/I have my own cloud/etc. But I make sure to rip on him and his tiny screen and slow bandwidth opium of the masses toy whenever he brings it up.
I honestly feel sorry for people who are blinded by how cool they think they are because they bought an iPhone. Seriously, it reminds me of these people who are brainwashed into a religious cult and think they are going to be teleported to a paradise planet by an alien named Xennue or something.
I use Gmail/Google Calendar/Google Contacts/Google Docs... I have no desire to give that up for an iPhone.
However, I do like my iPad. Now that it can run Chrome, its actually nice. I can easily access all the above with little hassle.
Other than this ICS/Google Maps 6.10 debacle, I've had no issues with my Rezound whatsoever. With its extended battery, its just a great piece of hardware. I can't see myself changing that for any reason for a long, long time...
Now... Tablets... that's another story...

Wow so much animosity towards the iPhone. Its really not a bad device. Both iOS and Android are solid platforms, and both have their pros and cons.
EDIT: Scratch all that i mustve overlooked the fact you have an iPad, so you do like the platform. As for the cultish fanboyism of ios yeah its there, but its going to exist everywhere. We have fanboy android users with the same mentality.
Well if I get a new phone it will be the s3. So what do you think, rezound or s3? I really don't know what to do here. I've been with htc since the apache. The galaxy s3 looks pretty good though. What do you think?

nice looking phone with a better processor. Already leaks of JB on the international version. Promising. Personally, I'm riding the rezound for a while longer.

Well said Webmastuh . Hehehe.. iphones may be slick, but they are highly overrated. Lots of these new Android phones whoop ish*ts a$$. The Rezound is an excellent piece of hardware, when paired with the proper software and firmware. The S3 is an excellent handset. The interface and graphics acceleration are much faster than the Rez, but as you know, Samsung has always had poor radios. Idk if they have improved it on the new S3 though...

Ha! Yeah, sorry if the post came off full of iPhone/iOS vitriol. I agree - both iOS and Android are both solid OS's/Platforms and both have their pros and cons. For the record I work with both and I'll program for either. I dropped the "religious fervor" about this stuff a while ago - they are all just tools.
I actually have a couple of iPads, and like a lot of things about them. I use them a lot to do actual productive work (mostly note taking and emails on the go). I have a couple of Android tablets, and I'm interested in getting a Surface.
But I'm sticking with my attack on iPhones. G3 sucks compared to my Rezound's G4, the iPhone screen is much smaller than my Rezound, and iPhone doesn't have widgets (and that shouldn't be overlooked. They are convenient as heck.)
I found out the other day that if I ever want to upgrade my Rezound with a subsidized phone from Verizon, I MUST drop my unlimited data plan for one of those metered plans they have. I told the rep I would never do this, and that I'd fire Verizon and switch to Sprint or T-Mobile first.
But the question I had was why upgrade my phone? The answer was "for new functionality that comes out". My answer was "I'll just do new functionality on a tablet, and keep my phone as-is." I'm a pretty imaginative guy, but I can't see why I'd have a specific need to upgrade my phone anytime soon. If some new killer-must-have app comes out tomorrow that doesn't run on a Rezound - cool, I'll just get it on a tablet. I'll keep the Rezound for basic stuff and use other advanced/new stuff on a tablet. The Rezound will be relegated to a bandwidth pipe with some basic email checking functions. Oh, and actual phone calls...
Maybe if 5G comes out that the Rezound can't handle... (and it would have to be a 5 - 10 times better than 4G to make it worth it), then maybe I'd consider replacing my Rezound... Unless a tablet comes out that has it built in... Or maybe some specific must-have thing would work better with a small form factor, but then again it might also be available in 5-7inch tablet for $200...
Switching back to my old phone....
Maybe I'm crazy (don't answer that), but I'm seriously thinking about switching back to my Dinc2 from the Rezound. After using the Rezound for several months, I'm just not that crazy about it. Sure, its bigger and has 4G, but everything about it - flashing ROMs, S-On/S-Off, this radio, that radio - is so COMPLICATED. The Dinc2 is just so much easier.
And I know that development on the Dinc2 has slowed way down, but it has on the Rezound too. I guess I'm just not sure what I should do, but I don't want to switch, then switch back again because I miss 4G. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd advise against reactivating a 3g phone on your line, especially if you have unlimited or a double data deal. Verizon is looking for any excuse to take those away, and switching between a 4g and 3g phone apparently qualifies. (Seriously, I've been on the phone with Verizon all morning trying to fix my uncle's plan).
if you have questions on flashing, just ask, there are helpful rezound people around.

I was wondering about that. Thanks for the info. That may just be enough to make me want to stay on the Rez. :good:
I don't know why people think dev on the Rezound is slowing because it's actually at more of a standstill. But, the OTA updates have dropped and now we are waiting for source to drop. Once that happens I have a feeling dev will continue on again and hopefully continue on long after the Rezound's shelf life much like the orig Incredible.
