[Q] Upgrading SGS2. Need goog adwice - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lords of Firmware and Gods of Root, need you attention!
Hi. I checked xda forum and cannot find full answer on my question.
Please, help me, if you can.
I recently bought sgs2 for me and my wife.
My wife use stock firmware and updating by OTA.
I have stock firmware with CF rooted kernel
When we bought SGS2 (From Poland) with latest GB stock firware.
We together updated by OTA to stock ([email protected] #3 IML74K.XXLPQ) firmware.
When I root my SGS2 with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5 using Odin.
In 6 april we were reminded of a new version by OTA and I updated wife's phone. Now her firmware version is [email protected] #3 IML74K.XXLPS.
I want update my phone too, I read the posts about CWM and looked at thread "[02.04.2012][CF-Root 5.4] K/EFGHIJKLP*, LA2/4, LP1/2/6/B/H/J/Q/7/3/S - su+bb+CWM4/5" and understand how to do:
1)Download rooted kernel with name like CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPS, but I cannot find this kernel - only CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPS-v5.4-CWM5.zip available.
Can I use this kernel or wait for CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPS.
What difference in kernel between OXA (Maybe UK??) and XEO (Poland)?
2) Download stock kernel from samsung I9100XXLPS_I9100OXALPS_I9100XXLPS_HOME. I've done it.
3) Place to external_sd/firmware rooted kernel and stock firmware.
4) Using CWM App flash CF kernel, when flash stock firmware without kernal and wipe dalvic cache
Am I right? I not loose my apps and setting?
if I update my phone (with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5) by OTA I loose root and CWM Recovery, but later can install CF root using Odin?

If you are already rooted and already downloaded stock firmware, why not try mobile odin to update. that way you won't loose root

[Q] Difference between root and cf-root? And revert to stock versions?

Hello,
(1) I am confused between root and cf-root? What's the difference between them?
I'm talking about these threads.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056334
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
(2)CF-root - "THIS IS NOT A ROM - it is only a modified kernel.". Will rooting (either root or cf-root) change my kernel version?
(3)Let say I installed/ flashed/ root/ cf-root (i don't know which is the right word) my SGS 2 phone, can I get back to my stock version including kernel version for warranty purpose? Using these steps to revert to stock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278), right?
As far as I gleamed, you have to have the correct version of the rom installed before you root. So if you want to root with CF-Roots KE7 kernel package, you have to first install a KE7 Rom.
To get back to your stock version you have to get a hold of the correct carrier branded rom and flash it with Odin. Take a look here.
By the way, you can find out wich version you currently have by entering *#1234# in your dialer.
Anybody more knowledgable feel free to correct me.

Yes if you have kernel KE2 and flash CF Root KE7 its now KE7

Its root all the same do you need root ???
, can I get back to my stock version including kernel version for warranty purpose?
If you have a copy of your original branded firmware flashing that back and removing apps that require root and resetting custom binary rom counter to 0 should be enough . Or flash a stock Samsung firmware
Using these steps to revert to stock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278), right?

I rooted my SGSII using CF-Root 3.7, re-flash stock do zImage in CWM etc to remove the warning
Now there is CF-Root 3.8 available. Is it important to update? Do I need to repeat the same cycle:
- ODIN flash cf-root
- CWM kernel flash of .zip file
- ODIN flash stock kernel
- CWM kernel flash of zImage
TIA

I do not think that all stock kernels and their CSC and MODEMs are available or even noted. I flashed a custom ROM and would like to get back to the unbranded Netherlands version (likely the same KE2 for Benelux) but its unlisted even on samfirmware.com
I should think that flashing any stock version for your region (EU/USA/ROW) would leave the warranty intact in so far as a Samsung repair centre won't care/tell the difference.

Galaxy s2 kf3 firmware

Hi guys,
i have updated my firmware through kies from ke8 to kf3
(detail is pda :kf3,phone :ke4, csc : kf3(INU)),kindly let me know what firmware and kernel should i root and flash phone with so that it works properly.
Thanks, please reply any suggestion would suffice.
You need to flash with Chainfire's KF3 kernel to root. You already flashed the firmware, so you just need to flash the rooted kernel.
Here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=640677&d=1309348522
If you already don't have Odin, then Download from here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=611625&d=1306787405
To get rid of Yellow triangle which is gonna appear after rooting you need to flash back the Stock/Samsung signed kernel of KF3, which you will download from here,

For more details on rooting process must read CF's guide. This one,

Yes, you can update via Kies and root again. Kies wont detect if your phone is rooted or not as long as you are on Stock firmware.

[Q][SGIII] Is it safe to update with OTA after root+custom cernel?

Hello, OTA just downloaded new update on my phone, but I am not sure if I can safely apply it... I run through whole therad and I can see, somebody was succesfull with OTA update somebody not... I have stock rom IMM76D.I9300XXALF2 with custom franco.Kernel r10 and rooted with CF-Root 6.4 + SuperSU + CWM5.5 + CWMManager. So question is, if I can use OTA update, or should I firstly remove custom kernel back to stock kernel and use OTA even if rooted with CF-R 6.4 or use OTA even with custom kernel and CF-R 6.4 or dont use OTA at all Thanx very much for help
If you do not have stock recovery the update will fail.

If I understand it right - because I used CF-Root 6.4 with CWM so now I have CWM Recovery not the stock one, so I downloaded my current whole stock ROM, unpacked it and there is recovery.img <- and this is stock recovery? So now should I flash it back to phone to get stock recovery back?

Restoring stock. (need kernel)

Hi,
I've been running a custom 4.1 firmware for a long time now, and i'd like to try the stock firmware for a while now.
I've downloaded the old gingerbread rom I9100BUKJ3_I9100SIMKI2_I9100BUKI1_HOME.tar.md5 that my phone had from sammobile. But I still need to find the old stock kernel. After that I can flash it and update with kies.
I've found it only here, but the link is broken.

Can someone help me with this?
The firmware *should* come with a kernel......I flashed back to stock (with mobile odin) and the stock kernel/stock recovery was installed from the firmware package.

Step 1 - flash CF kernel which is appropriate to ur baseband with Odin
Step 2- Flash cutom rom what ever u want
Step 3 - Flash Gapps..
Thats all :good:
You can flash CWM and then the custom ROM now itself, without upgrading to ICS. Just make sure you flash the correct rooted kernel for your baseband version. Don't directly flash any CWM or use ROM manager. Good luck!

My details
Baseband version - I9100BUKI1
Kernal Version - 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKJ3-CL647431 [email protected]#2
Build number - GINGERBREAD.BUKJ3
So can anyone give me correct CWM recovery to my S2 ? (I just want to flash kitkat rom.. )
And you can't search for this why exactly ? You've been here more than long enough to know how things work.
Flash Gustavo's kernel first and then follow instructions on the omni thread for flashing as a first time user.
Search around and you will find everything here itself.
I'd suggest flashing the latest stock rom via Odin, ms1 I believe. Then flash philz kernel. Then boot into recovery, (while your new rom cwm zips are on your SD card) format system, preload, data and cache. Then flash the omni rom zip, and the correct gapps, and any other mods you would like.
