So i have noticed that when I have been at school the data seems very slow, almost to the point we're it is unusable so I decided to run a speed test and I was shocked by how slow it really was. Just look at this

this is ONLY when I am in school though as you can see from the other tests... Any ideas why it would be so slow when I have good service?

Could be a carrier problem. If you have others around you that have smart phones and are on the same carrier, ask them to run the speed tests and see if they get the same results. If so, call your carrier to open a trouble ticket to have it checked.
it's probably an isolated "local" problem because im getting great lte speeds.
It's ONLY in my school. I besides that I always have good speeds, even on 3g

how fast is Verizon 3G normally? Isnt 3G on verizon usually pretty darn slow anyway?

4G hasn't happened in my area so 3G and wifi is all I get. However, 3G is not that slow. Just ran speedtest and got 617 down and 697 up.
The speeds the OP is showing are definitely a problem. If there is only one cell tower servicing the area around your school there could be an isolated network issue. Not sure if it still works but you used to be able to dial #tt and get straight through to network support to find out.

I just tried #tt and it is no longer a valid command. No one else in my school gets such terrible data speeds but me and I'm wondering if it is due to throttling because I've used about 4gb this month and my school is not very techy and even though many people have smart phones most don't use a whole ton of data.

Now when you say your the only one in your school that gets slow speeds is that compared to other Verizon users? Or comparing to AT&T, T-mo and Sprint? Personally I myself would be only concerned if yours is the only Verizon phone that has such a slow speed.
I myself work in public education, I am a onsite tech at 4 Elementary Schools and I work in a newer developed area in our district and with that AT&T and T-mo can be spotty in the schools I cover. And because of how the buildings are my phones get hit pretty hard with searching for signal because of where my office is at in each of the schools, but I get the best connection compared to the other carriers. I actually have a T-mo provided work phone that I actually just forward to my Verizon phone so I can actually get my work calls. Either way, it could just be the building your in causing issues, but if there are other Verizon users that are having the problem then that's probably the case. And even then it might just be the rezound getting interference from something, possibly even the wireless that you have at the school.
Or could be the ROM, but if you have other verizon friends with no issue, and a rezound friend without the issue, I would say get it replaced at Verizon.

After a few different phones, reporting poor service, receiving an Airave (my house being one of the only places I get a decent speed at)...I decided today to call and complain about the service again, average 3g speeds here are 10-125kb and some places calls can't even be made (i live 45 min south of boston).
Apparently, the usage has gone up, so the already weak service here is far worse then it used to be. For the first time a tech support guy actually gave some legit information back to me. Said signal here ranged from fair to roaming.. and sent me to retention.
I moved my wife and I from T-Mobile/AT&T, payed $260 in ETF.. so this BLOWS, I love my EVO 3D, but the service is too poor to justify paying the bill.
Anyways, the point to my post.. if your service is super awful like mine, and you are new.. you may have a way out if you can't deal with awful service for the next 2 years.
Guess I'll be Ebaying the phones and waiting for the SGS2 or something... lames - please don't pm me about buying the phones, we're keeping them until the end of the month, and I probably don't trust you
I don't see how your getting a bad signal with an airave in the house. I got one and I have full bars everywhere in my 4 bedroom home. I start dropping bars about 50 ft from the house. If you have a airave then you have internet obviously, invest in a good wireless N router and your phone will be stupid fast on wifi.
Oh my house is great, but that is about it.
I fixed my first post... the issue isn't at my house.
Oh ok. I know what your sayin now. T-mobile is getting the evo 3d so its a win win for you.

I thought it was going to Canada or something, when is that supposed to come out? I just left T-Mobile after 7 years or something haha

Cool, thanks. From the way I took it, I had until 9/7 to port my number. So all together right now I'm kinda in a bad spot, I'm not buying a phone I don't want. I sold my old phone, so I'll prob be crying for a month with a G1 in my hand until something worth buying comes out
G1 was an awsome phone, Im pretty sure its got gingerbread too lol. Well good luck to ya, I know if you sign a two year contract and already have a phone you can save your "upgrade" for the phone you want when it drops.

Wait, is your evo 3d available for purchase? No need to ebay it, you have a potential buyer right here. I'm in the market for one. Send me a PM and let's discuss!

the reason why you still have poor data tx/rx rates even with an air rve is because the airraves do not support data, only voice and text. they are designed basically to do your calls/text via VIOP, and it transmits 1x cdma service(which does no web). you cant use the airrave with out good high speed internet, and you can use your wifi on the phone(assuming you have a wireless router) to make up the for the low data speeds. If you dont have a wireless router, you can go buy one for 35-110 bucks and that would resolve your issues.

I understand where the op is coming from, he said the airave works, its just his general area sprint is lacking in coverage. Im in somewhat in the same boat as him, but I plan on moving next year to a 4g area so I'm just going to hang in there, I like sprint phones and their unlimited plans.
Im also using an airave and wifi, and most places I go have wifi. So I get by.

I think I made it clear in my OP that the service in my area sucks, exceptionally bad.. except for at my house, where I have an airave (airvana actually) and my wireless n router
And maybe one or two other spots have a decent connection, but it'll be a mb of service 1 block, and the next it is 125kb
I'm not at fault for the poor signal which is why Sprint is allowing me to leave without an ETF

I don't blame you if you are moving to a 4g area, I'm actually moving at the end of the month, to the next city over, which has even worse coverage lol. Funny thing is, it isn't like I'm out in some obscure area either...
In general I think Sprint has over looked my area, Providence, RI has ****ty 3g/4g too, very mediocre .. though that is 40 min from me anyways.. sucks, at least I'm not a data hog so not having unlimited won't be an issue most of the time for me.
Im moving north of Atlanta, 4g and 3g are roaring fast there plus its civilization, ill just have to get used to stoplights and traffic again lol.
I was in the far west suburbs of Chicago a few months ago and the sprint and wimax data was painfully slow, almost unusable, So some populated areas are better than others.

This area was gigantic for Nextel years ago, we have like 4-6 Sprint stores within a 5-10 min drive of some sorts here.. its kind of amazing that the service here is so lacking. **** they just opened up a new Sprint store (2nd of the city) where I'm moving too.. and the house I'm buying hardly has even a bar outside of it.
T-Mobile I had 1-1.4 mb dl , and good voice just about everywhere and my CR-48 has comparable data speeds at least with the free Verizon coverage. My wife had a 3GS (I finally converted her with the EVO 3D!) which was probably slightly under Tmobile/Verizon.... I just don't think Sprint has enough juice in this area to cover all the people who got on the Evo/Evo 3D in the past year.
New Bedford isn't exactly in the middle of no where.. I'm moving across the bridge..
The sucks man well you have a change to try another carrier now, if verizon got lte where you live you should try then out, I have them too and speeds are amazing, my 3G varies usually I get almost a mb/s and sometimes 300kb/s but is not as often as before

So I know alot of us are having issues with data speed on our Evo 4G LTE's
Im doing a comparison test using speedtest.net. Because I dont have both devices activated at the same time, I had to do it on one then activate the other and do it on that as well. The phones were placed in the exact same location using the exact same tower, which I am about 1000 feet from.

Now I know this information is slightly off because of the time difference but as you can see the speeds vary greatly. I am going to keep my Evo 4g LTE for a few more days to see if sprint does anything about this.
Things I have done to try and fix the speed issues:
-reset the phone
-reprovision the phone using my MSL
-update PRL
-update profile
-I tested another Evo 4g LTE and got the same dismal results
Sorry I forgot to mention the Sprint rep told me those speeds on the EVO 4g LTE are normal -_-
Wow that was sure "In depth"
In one of the posts on here, there's reference to some optimized network settings. I wonder if that will help.
I don't have the link handy, nor do I recall book marking/subscribing to it. Effectively, it optimizes tcp/ip settings, similar to what was done when going from dialup to dsl/cable; larger receive window buffers and a few other changes.
Sorry I started this thread comparing both phones from 4 different locations on different towers at the same time but for whatever reason none of the screen shots saved on my EVO 4G LTE and I had already switched phones out 4 times and was getting tired of it. But in 3 of the 4 locations the original EVO out shined the 4G LTE. Only in a parking lot with blue skys were the 2 devices similar in speed.
THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS! 3G IS USELESS FOR ME!

Poor Connections - hardware or software?
Massiveian-
Thanks a ton for doing that. I've been keeping a running log of my speed tests on the LTE and was planning to re-initialize the OG 4G to make a similar comparison. You saved me the effort.
Basically your data is pretty clear that the LTE is running approximately 5X fslower than the old 4G on the same exact network setup.
This in my view brings the problem squarely bacj to the phone.
Do you think its fixable? H/W (antenna etc. ) or a S/W problem?
I'm kind thinking that the device and radio are designed for the supposed LTE network and that it's simply suboptimal running on the 3G network and the only thing that's going top work is emergence of LTE network, but based on the "4G" i'm not going to hold my breath.
I'm seeing that this is a real dealbreaker for a lot of users. I'v had the phone since pre-order so its now probably like 2 weks and basically I can't get alot of use out of it.
I'm dialing *2 for sprint in the am and going back to the evo 4g until this is resolved.
I'm frustrated because I got a galaxy [email protected] and it also had really bad connections, now I thought lte would be the one, but looks like I'm going to wait longer.

I have ****ty data speeds too. I dont ha r data to back it up but my phone sucks add if I am not on WiFi.

That ping seems long even for the OG EVO getting 1+ MB/s. Is your GPS picking a server close to you?
For all the people with data connection problems, where are you located? There's been talk about 1st stage LTE rollout cities having their towers heavily worked on to push out LTE which I'm assuming which will affect our data connectivity.
I'm in San Francisco and have noticed horrible speeds in pockets of the city, but will be perfectly normal a few blocks over after switching towers. This makes me fairly certain it's a network issue and not phone issue.
Also, I work in San Jose which is a 2nd stage LTE city (weird how they split the Bay Area into 2 regions) and I've never seen data connectivity issues around there.
Damn those speeds suck, I switched my galaxy nexus for this phone cause I ended up getting better speeds, right now is late in Las Vegas so I'm getting almost 2mbps
This is what I got earlier in the morning
And this is my peak hour
If this speeds go lower I'm changing carriers I like this phone so I do want to keep it but I want to have the same speeds
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Although the phone itself is fantastic I really cant recommend it based on the data/network performance... and its really unsettling because the build quality is fantastic and I wanted them to really outshine the competition. I bought a case for it, stuck a screen protector on it, made sure it was all good and ready for the long haul and now I'm thinking of returning it.
Here in Dallas with a 3G speed of 157kbps, you just cant do anything with it. I have to feed off my local wi-fi in order to do anything data related with my phone (thankfully that signal is amazing, 12Mbps).
But now after trying multiple roms, multiple settings, different PRL's I have ran out of options and my 14 days are almost up, I guess the only thing I can do is return it and get my NS4G back until I can test other phones.
It's a ****ing shame, I love the capabilities of this phone, but the speed I'm getting is horrendous.
Here is my speeds from numerous days worth of testing.
My speeds were approximately 1/4 of what I was getting on my OG Evo until yesterday afternoon when I went into settings and manually updated my PRL. Now my speeds are comparable to my OG Evo.

My speeds were also like most of you are reporting, 200k or so. Since having the "software reinstalled and phone re-activated" at the Sprint store this is what I get, same exact place I took prior tests.

Thank you for letting us know. There is a bunch of us ready to jump the gun and return the phone -I do not really want to, but we can't get locked on contract with this going on.-
Can you please provide us with updates on how it works on different locations?
Also, do you have any idea what kind of "reinstall" they did at the store? What if the ones of us who activated the phone by ourselves are the ones having the issue?
Thanks a lot,

All they do is use your MSL TO GET into the phone to provision it.
They did for me as well and did not work. I have also tried dojng this myself with no change
My speeds are so bad I hardly even do anything that requires data unless I'm connected to wifi.
Data seems much faster on the EVO LTE vs my photon and og EVO. Also, the ability to use 3G data while on the phone on the LTE is a HUGE benefit. Wait for the upgrades, speeds will increase for everyone on 3G as well as LTE.
Also, EVERY new phone has the same exact threads and discussions about how oh my god data is so much slower on this new phone -I'm gonna return it!! Well put the same phone on Verizon's PRL and it works just fine for data speeds. Point being, it's not the phone it's the network-WHICH IS BEING UPGRADED. wait for the upgrades or jump to Verizon.
My speeds are way faster than my OG and my 3D. But have only been so on PRL 24003. I know it's not supposed to work that way, but as soon as I change PRLs, my speed drop.
My speeds at home are the same or faster than I was getting on og EVO, however, the signal is worse. I might try roam control and force my phone on vzw network at work, then if sprint doesn't like it they can cancel my plan

Same here in downtown Philly; 3G speeds were abysmal -- when it even connected to a network at all. Between this issue, the issue of WiFi not handing off to 3G (or going to/from roaming -- basically hand-offs were a coin-toss as to whether they'd work), and the random modem-crash reboots, I threw in the towel. The EVO LTE is back at Sprint and I've sadly gone back to my OG EVO. I suspect others will do the same.
I've been calling every day, every day they tell me no data outages in my area. Have another Sprint user in my building getting same speeds. I've resorted to installing a 3G roaming PRL because they simple won't do anything about it. Before 9/4 the data was fine, slow at times, but I could at least stream Pandora, etc...

Is it common that when the roll out vision data speeds go to crap before they get better? It's funny as it only seems to be in this 2 mile range around my work. By my house, I'm getting 3G speeds above 1400kbps (which I've never got before). I've told Sprint that, told them that I've updated my profile, basically told them everything and that I just want them to tell an engineer despite what their system shows, that their is slow data in this address range... Still nothing.
Guess I'll just get my contract terminated for roaming...

I have read that speeds can be affected during the switch over. In my personal experience, it also depends on geographic location. I live in Lake Worth FL, I get 2mb down and almost 900kb up from my house on 3g. Now, I work in North Miami Beach, I'm lucky if I get 100kb down and 3 kb up down here, even on 5 bars. This is even before the LTE rollout. Just because you have a good signal, doesn't mean your data will be fast. I think some areas may be over subscribed, they just don't have the bandwidth available for all their devices in some areas. Hopefully this will get better as they rollout LTE in my area.
If they are upgrading to vision it would be more likely that your speeds would fluctuate rather then stay at a constant low. They may be repairing towers in that area and pushing the load onto remaining towers. That essentially cripples available bandwidth. Had to put up with a similar issue for almost 3 straight months. They should tell you if there are any repairs or improvements being done. Have you tried having your call escalated?

+1 on this. That was going to be my recommendation as well.
CR will probably credit you which looks like you are entitled with the crappy service. And yes, data gets worse during NV upgrades, especially when they are working on the backhaul to the towers. It gets worse before it gets better then you will know its almost time to light up LTE. in short, nothing much more you can do other than leave Sprint but I'm thinking it will be regretted in the end.

Uh, fix it. No one should have data this slow consistently. Every single second. I understand periods of slowness, but this is absurd.
And, it looks like they fixed it last night... Back to normal 400-600kbps.
I've had data that slow at home for close to 15 months, all I got was an Airave (sounds like a motto on a t-shirt).

It's so slow I can't even load webpages sometimes.
What phones did you come from and what has your experience been with data speeds? What city do you live in? Have you played around with the APN settings to increase speeds?

I have been getting really slow data speeds in the Los Angeles area. I used to have the Galaxy S2 (i777) and it had decent speeds (usually 2-3 Mbps and sometimes up to almost 11). When I upgraded to this phone, I was hoping to get around 5 or 6 Mbps but I get this instead.

Are you on an unlimited plan? Maybe you have been throttled. If not then something is wrong,I got 21 down on lte in Detroit.

I am on the 2gb data plan and it says I have 1.9 left. I rarely use At&t data since I am connected to WiFi 80-90% of the time.
Speeds are faster early in the morning or later in the day around afternoon and also night time. It's just really slow during the day. I guess the network is just congested but it was never this bad when I was on my old phone.
Make sure you are connected to the closest server in the server list, sometimes it messes up and gives you one thousands of miles away, which result in low speeds.

Thanks. I've selected the same server that I used with my old phone (Los Angeles Dream Host).
How do your data speeds compare with your old phones? a) increase, b) decrease, c) stay about the same?
And was your old phone LTE or HSPA+?

Pasadena was where I got the highest data speed (near Cal Tech). I got 11, almost 12 Mbps on my old phone there.
Why are your speeds so slow? Im getting upper 30 mb consistently

All lte at my house except one 3g test as you can obviously see.
I think you may want to check apn or call att. That might resolve your issue
I had to do that twice in one year due to some technical beef my phone did not register with their servers after resetting.
Portland oregon
around most of Dallas I get 12-20Meg ... in some places 30-40Meg+
the only time I got terrible speed was when I tried using the LTE toggle. but that was easily fixed.
I hate you guys, such fast speeds.
I shot AT&T an email and this was their response.... not sure if it is true or if it is just the normal reply they give when people ask about data speeds.
"Thank you for contacting AT&T about your wireless service. I will be
more than happy to assist you with your inquiry regarding your data
speeds today.
I'm sorry to hear of your data speed issues on the new LTE network, and
am glad to look into that for you. I do see several tower issues being
worked on in your area, which started a couple of weeks ago. They are
planned to be resolved by 12/30/2012. There are also planned upgrades to
the existing towers there too. I have now sent in a network quality
report to our engineers to make them aware of the impacts this is
having. They do use these reports in network planning also.
If you have any additional questions about this issue, please respond to
this email. Thank you for choosing AT&T; we appreciate your business."
Ask them if your data plan is compatible. The Bestbuy website, when I ordered, said that I must upgrade from my 2GB 4G data plan to the 3GB LTE data plan. There was no getting around it. Maybe you have to have the 3GB data plan to use LTE. Although it does look like your connected just fine.
Hey people I understand sprints network is unlimited etc.... but me and the other person on my line are rooted and we tether he used probably near 15-20gb i used probably about 5 and ever since the 30th of december my 4g connection has been unreliable to the point where i have to turn on 3g to use the internet or it will just hang at loading the website or the app i even did a speedtest with other people that have sprint in my area they easily get over 10mbps while i cant even get 1mbps unless i throw 3g on..... my question is can i do anything about this? we both have sprint note 3s stock rooted i checked the towers in my area all are good! I called sprint they made me do a network reset etc update profile and prl nothing changed! please help
Could be defective but I don't think you're being throttled. Try taking the battery out for a few minutes.

My wife and I are with Sprint as well and we both strongly believe that Sprint throttles 4g LTE at 5 gb download. Every month when I hit 5 gb I can't connect to 4g until the next billing cycle. We are going to see how Spark is this year and if it's as piss poor as the current 4g we are jumping over to AT&T.

Sprint has to be throttling I know my device is not defective it just so happens it's happening to both lines on my account we both used a decent amount of data I wonder if there is some sort of work around

Agreed. If you aren't in a roaming area, they shouldn't be throttling you. Make sure that you update your PRL and profile, reboot, then call them. There are a lot of factors, including times of day, towers from which you're pulling, &c. They know this info, so I suggest that have your facts before calling.

No throttling. 5gb isn't anything. I've used close to 100gb with no problems. For years I've easily gone over that 5gb mark. Someone here in another thread used almost 200gb. Just sounds like tower overload. New customers around Christmas time makes sense. Sprint should be able to see that.
Edit: For anyone that wants to see the unthrottled usage lol http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2592679&page=4
I'm having a similar issue. Will have to keep a close eye on it. I thought it was just my phone or the towers acting funny

Ya if data is not fast enough to stream some video in an area with lte coverage I would call and see whats up. Or go take your phone to another of the same model and compare signal strength. You can go into testing settings and make sure both are on same tower and see actual signal dBm.

Yes that is sprint lte at its best I love this phone/service. I cant see me needing spark untill phones have 4k displays and 4k video out. Maybe for really congested/populated cities its needed. wimax never made it here and lte is pretty new for us too, spark is probably years away for me anyways.
