Wi-Fi draining battery??? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently i've had some issues with my galaxy s2. I'm leaving it at night with wi-fi on cos i forget (but i'm sure i've forgotten it on before).
I left it at about 50% and it got drained to 0% by the morning.
Usually it only drains 3-4% if on standby at night.
I'm running gingerbread 2.3,6 XWKK5 kernel.
Betterbatterystats says:
-Wifi on for 15 hrs 21mins
-Awake for 9hrs 22mins
-Screen on 22mins
There are no weird partial wakelocks.
All i see is the phone that keeps waking itself up during the night...
Has anyone experienced this?

I find it really weird that there's nothing in better battery stats partial wakelocks that can explain this weird behaviour. ANyone have a clue?

There were probably some apps in background. you'd better to shut down wifi always

wifi shouldn't do that
have a good look under bbs, something should of been on that kept the phone awake and trust me its not the wifi...
awake for 9 hours... doing what exactly???
whats ur first battery sucker that u complain of ?

Another way to look into this is by using juice defender.
It's a battery saving app that shuts down wifi and data connection while your screen is off and believe me it does save a lot of the battery this way.
By using this you can tell for sure whether it's actually your wifi that is casing the battery drain.

Wifi always on or always searching has been posted as a battery drain countless time .
WiFi set off when screen off .

sometimes that leads to a bad app asking for a sync/push more often with no data available causing even more wakelocks, but in general yes disabling data in the android settings gives big batt boost in life with less usability from the phone... then u'll have to get used to enable/disable every time u need to use data

CheckRom RevoHD v4 wid DK 2.4.3 Major battery issues

Hi fellows,
Please help!!! last night i have experienced worst battery performance (see attached). Over night battery drain form ~80% to 27% with nothing except WIFI on..crazy ****.
New apps or diffrence i made on S2 were:-
Installed Set CPU - XDA version
Installed CPU SPY - from market
Changed Modem from XXKI4 to XXKL1
Changed Modem Kernel from DK 2.5.2p to 2.4.3 (i personally feel 2.4.3 have better battery performance)
now i have removed Set CPU coz heaps of battery used by Android OS and Android System.
Please advise what i have done wrong here...
thanks

Could be an issue caused by the flashing of a new modem and/or kernel.
Have you run a kernel clearing script or done something special to "calibrate" your battery?
I prefer to shut down the phone, fully charge to 100%, then unplug the phone and pull out the battery for about 5 minutes.
Then put the battery back into the phone and boot the phone.
It is easier for the battery stats chip to auto-calibrate by using a "stress-free" battery.
Just to get all unneeded wakelocks, please post screenshots of the Partial Wakelocks and the Kernel Wakelocks of BBS.
thanks It_ler,
yes is did run kernel clearing script but haven't done something special to "calibrate" battery.
I have just fully changed my phone after removing Set CPU and cleared battery cache from recovery mode, so nothing much for now in Partial Wakelocks and the Kernel Wakelocks of BBS.
For now phone is on battery from last 35 mins with WIFI ON and only lost 1% of battery. Mind you from that 35 mins its been in deep sleep for 30 mins (as per CPU Spy). Monitoring on going, will keep posting...
BTW do you think Set CPU with only one profile configured i.e. Scree 0ff (100-500, priority 80) can chew ~53% battery over night with only WIFI on?

Maybe the KL1 gives you a weaker signal.
Under settings > about > status you can see the signal strength.
Mine is always around 92 dBm with 9 asu.
Don't know exactly what it means, but it's interesting to see the difference between modems.
yeah might be Kees, right now am back to my original config i.e. CRR4 wid DK 2.4.3 kernel.
So far its been ~17% usage for 5 hours 10 mins wid 30 mins of GPS On (for runkeeper), 35 mins of display on, all time WIFI on and few calls, emails and messages.
I still dont feel its normal something is wrong, will monitor overnight otherwise flash my last good config (sad its 10 days old tho) or will try siyah 2.6_S99 kernel..any thoughts???

A mobile phone signal (or reception) is the strength (measured in dBm) of the connection to the mobile phone with its network. Depending on various factors, such as proximity to a tower, obstructions such as buildings or trees, etc, the signal may vary. Most mobile devices use a set of bars of varying heights to display the strength of the signal where the device is located.
Equation : dBm = 2*ASU - 113
Less dBm means better signal.Ideal will be close to -60 and you will have full signal strength and close to -113 is extremely bad signal. ASU is a more linear way of representing the signal strength
Sounds not bad, but good be better i think.
But for me, DK 2.5.2 is way better then 2.4.3, about the same battery life as with speedmod k-2 18 test 17, but with some what smoother / faster feeling.
And i must say that for battery life, i found speedmod kernels better then siyah.
Did you have any frozen apps?
I did some freezing like maps and streetview, iám using Sygic.
I did froze Talk, but somehow this caused some drain, thinking that Android it self was constantly looking for Talk, something like that.
So, if you have some apps frozen, take a good look to them.
Any apps updated?
By the way, iám using the setting, wifi off when display is off.
Fast Dormancy is also disabled, my provider doesn't have FD.

Did you make log with bbs?
Is battery problem common with this rom?
Folks just a word of advice instead of starting a new thread why not just post in the CheckRom thread about any issue you may have.
For the record battery life with this ROM is excellent therefore the OP needs to establish what is draining their battery, a simple few searches of the forum will give you the answers.

[Q] battery life on CM10 amaze

Okay, so i just installed CM10 (Dec 5 release) with no problems. Audio working just fine through both speakers. minor issue when connecting to bluetooth and wifi but reflashing fixed that. My issue is with the battery draining EXTREMELY FAST. Has anyone found a resolution to this?
Thanks, Jwallbanger.

first question, what do you mean by extremely fast? unless your phone is dieing in under an hr from full charge i wouldn't say its "extremely fast".. secondly there is a "discussion thread" located in the general section of the forums to talk about and find solutions to problems related to CM 10 found here, also have you checked your battery stats to see what is eating your battery away? weather its screen on time, cell standby, wifi or data... or an app.. there are several issues related to battery drain.. like if you have wifi on but not connected to a wifi location.. or having data on but in an area with no signal.. more information is needed but i would prob suggest to do a full charge to 100% wipe battery stats from recovery and then do a test from 100% to see how long your phone lasts with full usage and in full standby mode... then compare and see what is eating your battery life away...if not refer to the thread i liked earlier up in this post

Yes I mean dying in under an hr, dying while plugged in charging and all i'm doing is text messaging. And I've checked the stats, nothing different than when i was running speed rom. But thanx 4 the link to the discussion thread. maybe I'll find something there.

My suspicion is that Google now prevents the phone from sleeping normally hence affecting battery life in standby mode. However if its dying in under an hour that is quite drastic and I would suspect there might either be a rogue app running in the background (do you have the eBay app installed? I found that also contributed to awake times in cm10). Second question is how long did your battery last in speed rom? Were you getting at least 2 hours of screen on time? If you got less than 1 hour and 30 minutes of "screen on" time in speed rom with data not constantly on I would suspect your battery is failing as well. Good luck

Juice Defender vs One Power Guard vs Deep Sleep (DS) Battery Saver

Hello
I was looking for some experienced first hand feedback to see if others have tried these 3 apps and what their findings have been.
Also, I believe some dev's have noticed that our phone, the amaze, won't go into a deep sleep mode on its own and thus accelerating the battery drain, that is how I came across DS battery saver.
Anyway, if anyone has tried all 3 of these apps alone or in combination, please share your feedback as well as the settings you chose to improve your battery life.
Thanks for any and all feedback.

i've tried the first two, JD and one power guard . I prefer JD much better, and It made my battery last twice as long!
And how you can determine if the phone goes into deep sleep or not?
I've tried all three,
Ds power saver didn't really work for me, still shows awake with it enabled
One power guard was pretty good, saving about an hour of power
Jd has to be the best, one time it almost doubled my battery

I am not sure how to tell if your phone goes into deep sleep or not but just read this in a CM10 bugs thread I believe when talking about battery drain still being a problem. Thanks for feedback on JD. I have ultimate but have some issues with it, one being hassle as wi fi doesn't reconnect on its own after unlocking phone and I always have to go and manually re enable wifi.
You can check deep sleep by going to settings and battery/power and click on the graph, under neath it you can see awake times and screen in time etc. If screen time aligns with awake you are okay, but if it's awake with the screen of, its not going into deepsleep

Thanks for this, didn't know I could check this here.
For me, using both juice defender ultimate and DS battery saver, there is a lot more blue color for "awake" than for "screen on".
I suppose this means the phone is awake even when the screen is off?
I guess this also tells me then that DS batt saver is not putting phone into deep sleep when screen is off?
Any suggestions on how to fix?
Thanks

juice defender is easier to use and set while OPG requires knowledge to set up. Though many says that JD is better, i had test both of them and realize OPG, aside that it is free, also have advantages against JD.

~6 Hours screen on-time, but 0 drain during sleep. Anyone else see this?

I have a 32gb WiFi only Tab S3 on Oreo. I am running stock rooted.
I've searched, but most threads here are about standby drain, which I don't have (battery drops literally 0% over 12 hours of sleep with airplane mode on). My problem is that the tablet seems to use a lot of power when on, even when doing random innocuous things like wifi-off drawing on Autodesk Sketchbook. Using GSAM, I can see the slope of usage is a lot higher than I've ever seen on a mobile device (I'll post a screenshot when I have the tablet in hand). It will level off when sleeping, but as soon as I pick it up again, the battery starts draining like crazy. I get maybe 6 hours, usually less, before it hits 2-3%.
Any thoughts?
Dude I was getting 5-6 hours use. I used Package Disabler Pro and froze EVERY single Samsung telemetry gathering app on the tablet, which is pretty much every Samsung app on there, as well as the useless MS apps and other things I'm not going to use. I'm running a battery drain test now, and I'm at 7 hours with 20 percent remaining. Pretty confident I'll get over 8 hours now. Try that.
---------- Post added at 09:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:10 PM ----------
Also I'm pretty sure the wifi drain bug is still present even in the latest updates. Go to settings, tap Ur wifi connection, then advanced, then view more, and change keep wifi on during sleep to only when plugged in.

I'll give that a shot. Do you think you can list which apps you specifically disabled? Thanks!
once you disable the apps, do you need to keep the Package Disabler Pro installed? I read about too many issues with it where users are forced to pay multiple times for the same app...
Yeah, I've noticed this as well; Great sleep battery (1% per 24hrs), but disappointing SOT (7hrs; and that's with the custom debloated ROM from the Dev section).
I guess the next step is to disable All of the Samsung apps (debloated ROM leaves some of the more useful ones intact)

Terrible battery life?

Mine seems fine as well. Ran all day yesterday under heavy usage, and was at 40% at 2am when i went to sleep. So far I've been running all day today under moderate usage, and am at 77% (~11pm)
seems pretty good so far, if you use the dual screen you will see decreased battery life..been two days since I got it and it is still in the "analyzing usage" mode for determining battery life. but a normal days of Microsoft teams chats since we are working remote, and moderate use of the mail and web browser with some (15%) dual screen usage was only down to 65% at the end of the day yesterday. Probably will take a week while is adjusts itself and we can see true battery life. Have not seen any way of getting an additional dongle for the dual case charging, just one is supplied in the dual screen box..
Well, it isn't like there is some foolish electron sucking device (like a 120 Hz screen) in it.

I think it means that it's 16h 29m from the last time it was plugged in

If that's the case, that means the phone was partially charged during a 23h period, meaning these are not accurate battery statistics. No biggie, I'm just trying to get an accurate idea of how long the battery lasts

It wasn't. That was off of the first overnight charge after getting the phone. I was at work the whole day and didn't put it back on the charger until I went to bed last night. I'm getting similar results today.

I'm not sure why it reports idle time as the same as the usage time

It shows the same today

K thanks. I must not be interpreting that stats correctly. I think the 16h 30m idle must be referring to the LTE radio. Otherwise the numbers don't add up. Were you on WiFi this whole time? I know I am since we are locked down ?

I am assuming the same thing. I'm also just amazed by the battery life because I've been using Galaxy phones for the last few years and I have always had terrible battery life. It seems that the reporting in this phone is rather vague as well. I'm going to use a different app to track usage

It was mostly wifi, but with some spats of LTE

I'm pretty sure this will be my next phone. I just might be a few weeks, since everything is kinda crazy right now. My last LG was my V20 which I loved

My phone idle stat nearly matches the time since a full 100% charge was completed. Bad name for the stat if you ask me.

Did you set up the phone from scratch or use some switch app like lg switch? I had to reset mine to fix app instability and battery issues due to the restore.

OK that makes me wonder. I used the app to reinstall everything, and I'm getting pretty sucky battery life.
If I reinstall from scratch, is there a way to restore settings, emails, and messages from my previous phone?
I'm getting awesome battery
I just pulled some awesome battery life! I've never seen it this good in my life. 1080p screen you are just fine for me. I don't miss my 1plus 7tpro McLean at all.
