I have searched and searched and read hundreds of posts.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to set up clockwork Recovery or similar on this phone so I can flash a ROM.
I have unlocked the bootloaded using the HTC dev site. I tried a few of the one click root programs.
I downloaded ROM Manager to try to flash CWM, but they say that I'm not rooted.
Please somebody help me. This is like my 7th Android device (G1, Nexus One, Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1), and all of them have been no problem. But this f'in Rezound is a Pain in my Ass.
I would really love to get this crap software (sense and verizon backup) off of my phone and install some new ROMS. Like I said, I do this all the time with my other phones, but my wife got this Rezound and it's either locked down like fort knox or I'm a f'ing retard. I don't know wtf is up.
Please let me know what to do after Unlocking the phone using the HTCdev site.
I've read many different posts/threads on this and all of them give conflicting information and there aren't any that seem to make god damn bit of sense.
If anybody can help me out so I can simply load a rom onto my sd card and flash the f'ing thing I will (and many others) will be very very thankful.
Please don't call me lazy or stupid either. Keep in mind I don't have days and days to research this information. All the other devices I have have taken me basically an hour or two to figure it out and I've always been successful.
I (and many others) just need some straight forward directions with No Missing Steps.
Thank You.
this phone is better using amon ra recovery then cwm recovery.
amon ra recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com//showthread.php?t=1339679
Ok, I think I might have done it, I will need to try to download/install a rom. the amon ra recovery i thought was the stock recovery. Maybe I did it we'll see.
Try using Hansoon's all in one tool.
It is in the developer's forum.

Here are good instructions for installing Amon Ra. Make sure you back up your stock rom before you install a new one http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ht...recovery-amon-ra-recovery-image-fastboot.html

I agree. It's better to just take the extra time to learn how to do it manually.

SUCCESS! I DID IT! -Here's what I learned
This is how I was able to unlock my Rezound and install a custom ROM on it.
1. Back Up All my files and contacts using my home PC and Google Contacts Dashboard
2. Watch this video on how to use HTCdev.com to unlock you phone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvSeLmXSjVI
Notes:
Battery pull and replace is required before you can Volume Down and Power into bootloader Mode.
Install the software on your PC that is required by the HTC site and then Reboot your computer or your phone will not Sync properly.
3. After you have successfully unlocked your phone the next step is to install the amon ra recovery.
ROOTING THE PHONE IS NOT REQUIRED. The ROM of your choice will Root the Phone during installation.
Installing amon ra required phone to be in fastboot mode like in the unlocking process read these notes:
Download amon ra recovery file and rename it recovery.img and put it in your c:\Android folder
go to cmd prompt and like in the unlocking process,
cd c:\Android
Then
---------------------------------------------From Link---------------------
Please flash recovery.img with command "fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img" where nameofrecovery.img is the name of the recovery.img you wish to flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com//sho....php?t=1339679
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Now that you have Amon Ra Recovery you can go to the next step of downloading and flashing ROMs per the instructions of the ROM developer.
Again the required steps are:
Save files on phone
HTCdev to unlock phone
Install Amon Ra Recovery
Download and Install ROM per developer's instructions
Having rooted many phones in the past, I also shared your concerns with the Rezound, as it is definitely more complicated than others I've done in the past. I used Hasoon2000's All-in-One Kit and it helps a lot; if you use it, I think you need to install HTC Sync, which isn't spelled out in the instructions but didn't work until I did.
Also, as was suggested, go with Amon Ra over CWM. I did CWM at first as that's what I was familiar with, but I could never get past the first screen, or even reboot. Amon Ra works great.

I am looking to buy an E3D. Just a few days ago a guy over on the OG Evo made a recovery just like the Amon Ra one. I don't know how many of you have used it, but I like it over the clockwork one, just my personal opinion. I wanted to see if anyone else would like to have it. He said he could make one for us, but he needed some help from an E3D user. Since I don't have one now, I can't help out. Just wanted to see if someone else could. Check this post out and this is his thread. If you are interested let him know. There are some screen shots near the end of the thread.
I used amon on my OG evo and loved it. Personally, I use TWRP on my Evo 3D and don't think it is significantly different from amon. If you like amon, you'll probably feel very at ease with TWRP.
Once you go TWRP you'll never go back

TWRP is so much better than either Amon Ra or Clockwork. my favorite feature is selecting the zips you want and having it flash them all and reboot all in one shot. Try that with Amon Ra.
TWRP for life!
Ok cool, I was researching recoveries and didn't find that for some reason. All I found was clockwork. I hope to make the switch soon to a 3D.

TWRP for the EVO 4G. This way you can play around with it and see if you like it.

I used amon for my OG EVO, been using TWRP since rooting my 3D and it's great.
As for his requests of a recovery.img and a tester, all the stock files are available in the development section and there's never a shortage of testers around here.

the only method of root right now for hboot 1.50 is htc's unlock... it gets u rooted but "s-on" stays on... makes flashing kinda a pain in the ass hopefully they get a full root for it soon

If you use the hboot1.5 guide youll be fine...Flashing is the same as before with the exception of kernels and kernel based roms...Even then the process for flashing takes seconds..it really is easy to use...
From what I have read, you have to flash a rom and then a custom kernel, even if the rom has one. Something about it being protected and won't take if just the rom was flashed. I am still reading before I start the process. I normally run a custom kernel instead of the stock one that comes with a rom anyways.

Sorry to say but you must not be on HBOOT1.5 AND S-ON like anyone with the flashing issues will be....
all you have to do if you are HTC UNLOCKED AND ROOTED IS and USB DEBUGGING IS ON... as follow's
1. unzip this RAR file which I have just now uploaded to your desktop
[I say there cause I will be doing commands and if you change the location you will have to do different ones...]
(most of the files I got off of a help for 1.5 flashing I DID replace CWR with TWRP)
2. if you have not ever installed the HTC EVO 3D driver's I left them in the folder please install it now.... if you have them installed SKIP THIS!
3. click start run CMD,then "cd Desktop\evo" then
"adb reboot bootloader" wait for HBOOT SCREEN IT IS WHITE...then,
"fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" wait for completion then FYI only need to do this once! then
"fastboot boot twrp.img"
you are now in custom recovery TWRP and you can flash ANY ROM & or KERNEL and it will flash just fine but you will always have to repeat these commands anytime you want to flash a kernel and I suggest the same for roms since 99% of them have custom kernels. don't depend on your reboot to recovery OPTION IT STILL WILL NOT WORK U NEED TO USE THESE COMMANDS HBOOT1.5 USERS!
this is the repeatable commands that are to be done in command prompt
cd Desktop\evo
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp.img
done!
suggestion is to do the commands once then leave the CMD prompt window open since you can just go up and down on the keyboard key to rekey it over and over again...
if this has helped you please leave a Thanks! also this folder is preset up so ADB doesn't need to be fully working on your pc for it to work since ADB IS INCLUDED.
enjoy got any questions shoot me a pm if i don't reply back here... or do both if your anxious.
So from what I read, even if I can manually go into recovery (bootloader then select recovery or just reboot into recovery) without the commands, it still won't flash correctly? You have to do the commands listed above no matter what? If so o'well, it makes the process a lil bit longer than normal and makes me be tethered to my desktop when I do this process, but hey it's better than not being able to run anything period.
I have been an avid Android user for a few years now. I had an ATT Captivate which had a huge dev following. It was so easy to flash and switch ROMs on a whim.
This is my first HTC phone and over the weekend I went through the steps to unlock the bootloader then root it. To get it to root I had to load the Amon RA recovery and then install su and superuser. It worked and it appears I have root now. But I am confused what H-Boot, fastboot, etc are?? I'm used to the phone being able to boot right into recovery and then go through the clockworkmod options while in recovery, making it so easy to load a new ROM in a zip.
Is there anywhere I can read to learn more about the HTC bootloader, H-BOOT, fastboot, etc? It seems to be a lot more complicated than the OG Droid and my Galaxy S.
Thanks.

It's actually not all that bad. The HTC bootloader(H-BOOT) is a locked up tighter than fort knox beast that doesn't want to let us do what we want to.. But for good reason. The HTC bootloader as you already know can be unlocked via HTCDev. This allows us to use custom ROMs, recovery, and kernels but keeps us from the radio. It also forces us to manually update the kernel with each ROM. Some developers have bundled a method of flashing the kernel within the ROM but it's from dev to dev/ROM to ROM.
Fastboot is a method to allow flashing of filesystems over USB. For instance when you flashed Amon-Ra you used a command "fastboot flash recovery xxxx.img" This tells the command to flash the recovery partition with xxxx.img.
Flashing via ClockWorkMod carries the same issue as described above. You either have to manually flash the kernel or the dev has to package the ROM to include automatic flashing. One of the caveats to automatic flashing is that it will update a version in your firmware(mainver) and potentially create issues. For this reason only, I suggest getting very comfortable with manually flashing a kernel vs the automated method.

alright guys so my only rooting/rom changing/whatever experience comes from the Droid 1, which was an extreme breeze to install and get root access easily, well overall super easy to install all you needed well now I'm having trouble with the rezound as it's a little more complicated (for me) anyways here's what I need help with
I unlocked my bootloader following the super noob guide, In the super noob guide the directions say to install the ICS leak 3.11 and then install the All in one HTC rezound tool thing I did all of that and Managed to unlock my bootloader and I am not 100% sure if I instaled the custom recovery but It seems like I did, If AmonRa is the ICSandwichy looking bootloader with the blue letters, IF it is then I did install it then here comes what I need help with, I cant seem to get anything out of clicking the perm root on the extras I am running the program on administrator and also tried it without running in administrator, I tried and tried but I can't seem to get root (checked with app root access and odesn't give me it) I even tried installing it through the options of the clockworkmod thing/Adamnro by clicking on the install su & superuser? option it says it installs it but once I'm checking it doesn't work
I have however not installed any kernels nor roms im still running on the ICS leak from when I unlocked the bootloader, Help me great XDA community
any help will be appreciated
EDIT: I forgot I also run it in debug mode and when I try to get perm root I do it when the phone is on
The easiest way to install super user is through amon ra recovery,I believe it's under advanced or devoloper options.or just flash a rooted custom rom I suggest picking one that includes the boot image that gets flashed in bootloader. The newer roms are mostly set up for s-off only and don't include an easily flashable boot image.

I had to flash these 2 files in recovery to get root working. You might need to install busy box once booted up but not 100% sure if that was needed.
I could not get root working by using the option in Amon or the tool. Flashing these 2 files was the only way I was able to get root. I was on 3.14 leak though but should be the same for 3.11
If you are still having trouble and you have a windows based system, t wouldn't hurt to give my toolkit a try. It doesnt have the super fancy GUI but it is very functionable. I designed it to help myself when i was a super noob. It goes through the whole process step by step and explains in the simplest terms possible how you should do it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571746
just a tip, make sure you have all of the htc drivers when you are doing this and then once you have finished the step telling you to install the recovery, go back into the bootloader by either doing it manually or using my program once your phone is on. (util, then roboot into bootloader) Once you are in the bootloader, see if you can get into the recovery section. If you got in successfully then you should be in a differnet menu, from there go to the development section of amon ra and then select root. Hopwfully you get success but if you did not do the following.
Go to the mounts section of amon ra and then mount the phones usb storage. It should still be plugged in so the device should show up on your computer. Go and download the latest superuser from here:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
place it in the root of the device storage thats on your computer (the root is the main directory or folder)
then unmount the storage from your phone and go to the flashing section on Amon Ra. From there select the superuser zip folder from the sd card. Flash it and if it still gives you an error i would check your steps or request more help because i cant help you beyond this point.
I hope this walkthrough has helped and good luck on obtaining root. With root you arent limited to anything. If you are feeling good after you get root i would suggest trying to get s-off. To get s-off you have to do hardware tricks not just software tricks, but s-off is much harder and more dangerous. Have fun with your new and hopefully rooted device!
wow after having this post up for a matter of seconds i have a thanks, glad i helped!
thank you very much this worked magically
thank you for your great reply but I tried the above method and it worked beautifully I still checked out and downloaded your tool it is very nice good job on it dude and I got S -off already as well wire trick was tricky as I was trying to use a copper wire and it was workin then I got my old ipod charger cable and cuted it then got mad because I thought it wasn't going to work because they were like tiny wires tied toguether but who knew first try and it worked perfectly...
Full disclaimer - I am pretty much a noob at rooting devices. I got my first android phone which was a Rezound in december and I only just rooted it in May using the All in 1 tool. I read up on all the steps for unlocking, rooting and flashing ROMs, but I took the easy way out and used to AIO tool. I am S-OFF as well
Having said that, I've been running a few Sense 3.6 ROMs without issues for the last 2 months. I saw that Nils has his Sense 4.0 ROM out and decided to take the plunge at v2.2
Now I decided that I wanted to update to the 3.14.605.10 leak before just in case. I followed the instructions on Nils ROM page. Or at least I thought I did. I screwed up at step 1
I factory reset from bootloader when Nils had clearly mentioned that I needed to reboot into recovery and factory reset, wipe from there. I then went ahead and flashed the 3.14.605.10 leak. It took a while but finally went through.
I didn't realize something was wrong until I tried to reboot into recovery. I couldn't find Amon Ra. I tried to push it more than a few times and it just wasnt working. I kept on getting an error - error: cannot load 'recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img'.
Now I tried to install Amon Ra using the All in One tool and got an error there too. Something like 'Remote access denied'.
Finally I installed Quick boot to just check for the heck of it and that's when I got the error that I don't have root access.
So from what I can tell, I have one or possibly both the problems listed below:
> I lost root access when I did the factory reset from bootloader and/or flashed the leaked RUU
> I'm screwing up in my efforts to flash Amon Ra
Since I'm a noob, I could be completely off base and it could be something else, but this is what I could guess. I need help. I need someone to tell me where I messed up. And I guess I really need someone to help me figure out how I get from where I am now, to where I was before i.e. being able to flash ROMs using Amon Ra
I do see that I'm still S-OFF on the bootloader screen, but it used to say 'Tampered' there, but doesnt now.
I hope I've provided all the information for someone to help me. I tried searching the forums but unless I missed it, I didn't find a thread addressing the scenario that I face.

Ok, here is the deal. When you ran the RUU it reinstalls the stock recovery. It also leaves you with the stock hboot which will not allow you to use most fastboot commands! bummer. You can find the ICS jounuponut bear hboot (J hboot) and flash that, and then flash the recovery via fastboot. you can find it
http://www.androidfilehost.com/main/-Support_Files-/SuperChilPil/
I think it is the 4th one down.
OR.. flash this ph98img which contains the recovery file here:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B28uLCcMCyfRZDZVOWNXbE90eWc
ctrl-s to download.
From there flash a custom rom and that should also give you root.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your reply. I tried out both the things you mentioned but it didn't quite seem to work, mostly because I couldnt get the JHBoot to flash properly. I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong but decided to put in some effort to research this before bothering you with more questions. I think I found the solution.
I went the Unlimited.io site directly and downloaded the Vifor JHBoot for ICS_3.14.605.5 from there
I then followed the instructions they had listed to flash JuopunutBear hboots
'Put the phone in fastboot mode, connected to the pc and enter the following commands
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip jb_hboot.zip '
I then rebooted into bootloader using 'fastboot reboot-bootloader'
And flashed the Amon Ra 3.15 img file you had linked to earlier. That finally seemed to work. Ijust validated it. I managed to flash Amon Ra finally properly. I think I have root back. Flashing Nils Sense 4.0 v.2.2 ROM as I speak.
Thanks so much for the advice. I was really stuck without it. I hope this information helps anyone else if they get stuck the way I did.

Help... I have rooted my droid x2 in the past a couple of times, but this Rezound is something different and for some reason I just cannot get it. I really need some assistance. 1) Grab the PH98IMG.zip from the Amon-Ra thread
2) Stick it on the root of your sdcard
3) Reboot into bootloader
4) Press power - the bootloader will scan for an update package, you should then be prompted to hit volume up to install it. If nothing is found, you didn't place the PH98IMG.zip in the right place.
5) Hit volume up to install
6) Reboot when asked
7) Remove the PH98IMG.zip asap.
You can now reboot back into the bootloader then pick recovery from the menu to get into Amon-Ra. Make sure you back up your existing rom before wiping and installing a new one.
One thing you need to know is that a PH98IMG file can be many things. It is only the name of a file that your phone looks for to use when booted into hboot. So it can be a kernel, an entire RUU (OS), a custom recovery or ROM... basically anything. It just means that item was packed into a PH98IMG file in order to run automatically off your SD card when the phone boots. So you need to know what the PH98IMG file is that you are using or you might flash something you don't want that can possibly cause your phone to not work properly.
You'd be doing yourself a favor by learning to use fastboot for things first so you understand the process more before using the "automated" way of doing everything using a PH98IMG file.
Also, as soon as you have Amon Ra installed and have rooted the phone, make a nandroid of your phone at stock and save that in case you need it if something goes wrong flashing the ROM, as mjones mentioned above. It's much easier to restore the nandroid than getting the RUU to get back to stock.
Another thing to think about is whether or not you want to go s-off or not. It unlocks the security of the phone making it both easier to flash ROMs by letting the kernel flash immediately afterwards by itself and also easier to brick the phone by doing something by mistake. You don't have to s-off, you'll just have to manually flash the kernel after flashing a ROM if you don't. If you don't flash ROMs often you might want to read up about it more before you s-off. I rarely change ROMs and I'm still s-on and it doesn't affect me negatively at all.
Also, there's a "Help" thread in the General section, I think it's a sticky, and some guys have posted their gtalks so that people can hit them up for help. Maybe one of those guys can walk you through it. I would be willing to do it but I'm not as experienced as they are and haven't rooted/flashed anything for a year now.
cslingerland is helping me with mine thanks for the help!
