ROM install question... - TouchPad General

I am currently running the CM9 4/8/12 nightly. It was the first ROM that I have installed so far since getting my TP less than a week ago. I wanted to try the 4/12 nightly and just had a quick question before I do so.
I am using cell phone ROM flashing logic here, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Do I just need to download the latest CM9 nightly zip, put it on the root of my TP and just flash the zip through CWM? Of course I would clear cache and dalvik first. That's how I would do it with my phone but I just want to make sure that it's the same with the TP before I bork something.
Thanks!

I went from CM9 to AOKP. It was my first ROM switch. All I did was clear cache/dalvik and did a factory reset. I wanted to do a factory reset just to be safe. I dont know how it acts yet when you just clear cache. But the way I did it worked just fine.

You are right... just download the latest nightly zip to your internal sdcard and flash away... wiping Cache and Dalvik in the process... nothing really different here as compared to the methods you used on your phones.

Thanks fellas!

[Q] Proper way to update rom?

Hi,
I'm running CyanogenMod 7 Nightly on an Incredible S. I was on Nightly #68 and today I updated to #89. For the update, I backuped my rom, wiped the Data and Dalvik cashes as is recommended. When the update was done, I had to re-setup my phone from the Android's first boot screens as well reinstall all of my apps and set the options like they were beforehand manually.
I'd like to know if there is a way to make updating roms a little quicker by not having to go through this whole process every time? ie: update rom and still have the phone as it was. I could understand that it may not be possible when going from CM to Virtuous Unity for example. But I'm wondering if I'm missing a step when it comes to simply updating the version of a single rom?
Thanks for any help!
You need a partition with the stable ROM and one to experiment with Nightlies.

There is no need to do any wipe going from one nightly to the next.
If you do wipe don't wipe data and you don't have to do set up again.
I do recommend titanium backup for times that you have to do full wipe.
Alright, thanks guys! I should be good to go now!

[Q] Installing ICS over MIUI?

So I have seen quite a few threads about installing ICS but I have yet to see anyone install it over MIUI. Is there a suggested method for this?
I couldnt get it to install over MIUI, it kept throwing me an error, I restored to cm7 and it flashed fine
Thanks for the reply, I don't have a backup of cm7 as the wifi never worked for me on it. Is there really any reason to goto cm7 first?
To answer my own question I guess I could run a Titanium Backup restore of MIUI on CM7 then upgrade... So that should be one benefit

I installed cm9 over miui. Did wipe dalvic, wipe cache, wipe data/factory reset, installed from sdcard. Worked fine.
Note - I hadn't done a lot in miui, so I didn't mind wiping and reinstalling apps.
Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the reply not sure doing a wipe then fresh install really counts as installing over miui but good to know it worked out if it comes to that... I am still on the fence about installing alpha 0.5 as I am really happy with how I have miui setup at the moment...
I'm a huge MIUI fan and have been running it on my Mytouch 4G for a couple months now. I put it on my HP Touchpad and couldn't stand it after a couple days. It was just way too buggy. I installed ICS a few nights ago and it is running beyond what I expected! You could try both and back them up then switch back to the other if you don't like one.

What I meant was, I was running miui. It was my 1st android install.
When cm9 alpha0 came out, I installed it as I said by cwm wipe; then flashed cm9.
I like cm9 a lot better than miui. Feels more like a real tablet app. Please don't ask me to define that .

[Q] VillainROM 2.4.2 to CM9

I installed VillainROM 2.4.2 (ninphetamine-2.0.4 kernel) on my Bell Galaxy S2 phone a really long time ago and have been satisfied with it so I never bothered updating or anything. Now I'm a little bored with it and have been thinking about trying out ICS via CM9 nightlies. I just have a few questions before I give this a go since I'm out of the loop when it comes to modding:
1) To install CM9, do I just put it on my SD card and flash with CWM after doing a factory reset and clearing the cache? Or does jumping from a GB kernel/ROM to an ICS kernel/ROM require an extra step?
2) My version of CWM is probably old, so will I run into any problems trying to install CM9? I don't remember what the version is, but it's whatever version that came with the ninphetamine-2.0.4 kernel. If I need a more current version of CWM, how would I go about installing it?
I think that's all.. Thank you for reading.
As long as you follow the instructions, it doesn't matter what you're coming from. See full instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419102
Notice that for the CWM method, the third instruction is to flash a particular CWM recovery to avoid potential problems. There are instructions on how to flash on the link to it.

Easy enough upgrade path
If you are worried about doing this, flash the ODIN "resurrector" CM9 package - it should sort out wiping and everything else for you.
If you want to do it via zip, put the zip file on the SD, do a nandroid backup, wipe data and cache, then flash the zip and latest ICS gapps.
I don't think you'll have any issues with installing CM9 using that CWM. If you do, ODIN flash latest Siyah Kernel. Go to recovery and flash CM from there and you'll be fine
Thanks for the help guys. I went with the CM9 Odin Resurrection method and then updated to the latest nightly (20120511) with CWM.
I'm very impressed with what I see so far. I'll have to keep an eye on it, but I am a little worried about the battery life. (Though considering that I am on a nightly build, less than optimal battery life might be expected..)
Also, my signal strength seems to be fluctuating a bit, usually between 3 and 4 bars, although sometimes it will go down to 2 bars. The modem that came with this build is XXLPQ. Is there a better modem that I can try, or is it just a matter of going through all of them? I was on MUGKG2 previously and it was quite stable for me.
I think LPQ must be your earlier Modem which is retained after instlling CM9, if I am not wrong CM9 doesnt contain a modem.
try KE7 modem, I have got a very nice experience with KE7 on ICS roms

[Q] Root and Install custom rom on my i777

Hi i am very new to the concept of rooting and flashing ROMs.
My phone is a SGH-I777 unlocked running stock 2.3.4
I have tried rooting my phone using CWM 5.0.2.3 for i777 and then user superuser 2.3.3 to root which went fine.
Now i wanted to install a custom ROM so i went ahead and downloaded the CM 9 stable for my i777 and the gapps signed package saved them both to the internal memory went into recovery mode and followed instructions as per CM wiki to wipe cache wipe factory reset and then installed the CM 9 Stable and then the gapps package. When the phone rebooted CM9 was installed but unfortunaltely no gapps and i was not gettinng any network on my phone.I tried reflashing but no good hence went back to stock and everything seemed to be working fine.
All i want to know is did i follow the right procedure or is there something else which had to be done or needs to be done while flashing any new ROM. Also if anyone can suggest a good stable ROM for the i777 i personally i like CM 9,CM 10,AOKP SHOSTOCK & MYSTIC GLORY.
If anyone can be kind enough to help me on how to install the above mentioned ROMs if its a first time for someone.
Thanks
You can try rebooting again after initial boot. Sometimes that will clear up data/network issues. Also you can go into settings-->more--->mobile networks and check your APN settings. When there you can hit menu button, then restore default apn, and reboot.
Also you mentioned your phone is unlocked. Are you using it on another carrier other than ATT? If so, make sure your APN are correct for your carrier.
Your basic procedure is fine, theoretically, it should work.
Why gapp didn't work? I don't know, I haven't run CM ROMs.
Try reflash gapp? Try reboot?
Did u download the correct gapps? I've had it happen that my big old fingers hit the wrong gapps package for the base I was running (cm9 (ics), cm10 (jelly bean) or gingerbread. Everything u did sounds right in theory, make sure not to use rom manager.
Sent from Team Pirate Headquarters. AKA yer moms basement.
I've had it happen that I needed to reboot into recovery and flash just the gapps again. Try that. Don't try to reinstall cm and gapps. Just do the gapps again.

It has been a long time but I do remember when CM9 first came out for our phone I would flash the cm zip and let it try to boot. Then after a few minutes I would hold down the volume +/- and power until I was back in recovery and flash cm a second time BUT this time then flash gapps BEFORE rebooting. On occasion I have still done that out of old habits when I am switching between different ROMs. Good luck

[Q] Crash after update nightly, now back at CM9

Ok, I got a question what to do now.
The following happened.
I updated the nightly CM10.1 from the settings menu. Normally this works fine. I forgot to make a backup (DUMB). When CM10.1 restarted it never came further than the boot screen (Samsung logo). After waiting for more than 30 minutes I decided to restart the device (get rid of battery). Now CM10.1 won't start again.
Luckily I had a backup, but it was from CM9 (at least I can call). I already tried to install CM10.1 again, but whit no result (bootlooping again).
How to install CM10.1 again? From CM9. What did I forget?
Hope someone can help.
Cm10.1 is no good. Unreliable I think. Try aokp milestone 2 for a solid Rom. If you really want it
Mounts and storage
Format
Data
system
Cache
Wipe dalv cache in advanced
Flash Rom
flash gapps
wipe cache
wipe dalv
Reboot
Enjoy.

I've only just installed CM10.1 on my S2 today. I encountered the same problem with cm-10.1-20130722-NIGHTLY-i9100
However, 0723 worked fine for me. Give that (the latest at time of writing) a go perhaps?
