Hi Guys,
Im currently running cyanogenmod 7.2 and i think its great and cant wait for the final cyanogenmod 9 as beta 7 looks fantastic the dev guys are the best.
My noob question is what needs to be wiped / reset before and after loading a new rom and is there an order in which to reset / wipe?
I have done a search and when i started this thread it shown a few similar threads however none for the ace.
Thank you.
ACD
You should wipe Data, cache and dalvik cache. Some roms requires other actions but Developers always write a guide in their rom post if there's something particular you have to do!
Ok thank you. When i installed cyanogenmod 9 beta 7 it said to do a full wipe after installation however i wasnt sure what a full wipe was.
When i installed cyanogenmod 7.2 it said to wipe the bits you said but also do a reset before the installation but it didnt say to wipe after the installation hence my confusion and i wasnt sure if there was a standard way for all roms.
standard way would be that, if there is something different devs would say that

As you all know, before installing new rom we we have to wipe data and cache in recovery...
But do we have also to wipe dalvik's cache?
As you read on every ROM thread, it is advisable to do a CLEAN wipe meaning all of it before installing a different rom. I personally don't find any difference between wiping and not wiping.
When upgrading CyanogenMOD nightlies wiping is pointless, and a waste of time. When switching between Sense-based ROMs and CM etc. then a full wipe is recommended, but not always needed. Wiping dalvik cache will never hurt
Just a thought here, but isn't DC in /data ? So if you wipe data you wipe DC as well, no?
I've been flashing Mdj Droid L2.1.110210 rom but the only thing I am seeing is the HTC screen for over 10 minutes. Is there anybody helps me to solve this issue? I am newbie so I cannot post in Mdj Droid L2.1.110210 topic.
Thank
I always wipe because it cleans the dust. As GrammarFreak said, when switching between CM nightlies, it is pointless as of the minor changes that come with them. But switching to an entirely new ROM (like stock -> CM) I thin it is better to wipe everything. The cause: Android DO collect junk, and a clean system is always nice.
Regarding contact, sms and other app data: backup to phone and cloud, simple as hell.
thanks for the advice. so if you flash anew rom, do u lose all ur apps every time? i'm flashing ics on my g2 alpha 8 right now. so i will find out soon enough

In my experience (using a HTC Desire HD) you only lose your apps and settings when you perform a full-wipe before flashing a new rom. When you update your rom without wiping, your settings and apps are not removed. However, I personally like to do a full-wipe before flashing a rom, because it clears out al the dust and gives you a fresh new phone.
If you don't want to lose your apps and data, but you do want to wipe, you can offcourse always use Titanium Backup to make a backup of the apps and data.
Just do it! It's free (costs only a slightly longer startup the first time after you wipe dalvik)!

in my experience, this happens when you dont clear the cache prior to updating the rom. in my case, I had to re-apx mine, since I didnt figure this out until I had tried the factory rom. good thing I had the SBK and CPUid, or it would have been even a more painful experience!
I'm new to the whole rooting and installing roms experience. I currently have Bamf Sense 3.0 rc2 installed. Do I need to wipe data before installing rc3 or is just clearing the cache and dalvik cache enough?
U will find it done both ways with success on here, But the devs recommend the wipe.

Always wipe. Period.

when in quesiton....just wipe to avoid any issues.
the majority of times that I've seen problems with a new ROM installation have been when a wipe was not performed.
Always wipe before install unless the dev who posted say specificly it is not required. like ron said 90% of the time errors people encounter are from not following instruction like wipeing before installing. Like in BAMF 3.0 adrenalyn even said that they made changes to the framework on the rom between each RC verson so it is definetly recommended.
Thanks for the responses. Will definetly wipe but ill wait for the next release then.
I've had CM7 a3.5 on for a few days and set up my android install pretty much exactly how I want it however I'm looking to try the Xron flavor of the rom. I know the install instructions say you need a full wipe, but I've seen a lot of reports saying that flashing over it works as well.
Anyone have any experience with it?
I installed it with just a wipe cache/dalvik cache. I did the wipes twice. It's been great so far.
Read the posts though , some have had troubles. Make sure you have a backup!
Sure you "can" just install over but the true question is "should" you. If you just install over a3.5 you wouldn't see the same benefits as coming from a full wipe.
Hello, thx for developing!
I have a problem, my phone does force close a lot, I don't know what's going on...
I've been coming from MIUI and I've wiped and formatted and then installed CM 9.1 FXP 140.
When on 140 it's been fc-ing on me, so I did an upgrade, after wiping and formatting again, to 141 but the problem is still there...
Can anyone help me please?
1. flash Advanced stock kernel
2. wipe everything(also the SDCARD)
3. wipe dalvik cache
4. install CM 9.1
5. RESTART
6. LEAVE IT TO BOOT like for 2-3 minutes .
Thanks for your answer!
Trying now...
Feedback in a while!
before you are trying a reflash and complete wipe you can try in CWM to fix permissions and wipe dalvik + cache.
If thats not helping i would also just reflash and do a full wipe.
Still the same problem...
Any other ideas for me to try?
Trying once more, now following this guide here
Hope this will work, I don't think it's different from the way I tried before, but who knows...
One more time...
I now decided to flash the latest stock (LT26i_6.1.A.2.50_1257-5499_WORLD) and then (cause stock isn't as nice as CM or MIUI) the same routine as yesterday, hoping this time it will work as hoped for.
Will let you know!
Not much progress, still having force closes...
I don't know what to do anymore.
Asked in the development thread... hoping someone overthere knows the answer...
THX for reading and thinking!
Hello,
I'd like to know when to do a full reset over the recovery when installing new ROMS or downgrading / upgrading a specific rom. I'm a Samsung Galaxy S5 user and I'm not sure when to do these steps. Some ppl say I have to wipe before I install the Firmware and others say I have to do a wipe after I've flashed the firmware.
So, what do you think and why?

hello,
The way this works are actually multiple things, and you should be very carefull not to be switching them around. There are multiple wipe possibilities.
Dalvik cache / Data, Where certain app data is stored. This is almost always wiped when doing a major version or rom update, like from cyanogenmod 11 to 12.
System, This is where the actual rom is stored, when switching roms this is usually done automatically by the installer. BE CAREFULL when wiping this, as it could brick your device if you don't know what you are doing.
some other things can also be wiped, but are not nessesairy most of the time.
Most guides for installing roms etc. explain pretty good what needs to be wiped in order for the rom to work. can I ask what you need to wipe something for?
I hope this helps a little, you can always message me and I will gladly help you.

I use the Galaxy S5 Knox 0x0 ROM for example. I won't use any other custom Roms like CM or such. I'm just confused about wiping because every thread says different methods or ways to wipe. In one thread it is recommend to wipe the phone before the installation of the rom and in another thread ppl say you have to wipe after the installation of the rom.
Installation: Downgrading from Lollipop to Kitkat 4.4.2 for TowelRoot.

So you are now installing Knox 0x0 kitkat over lollipop?
In that case follow normal instructions for installing kitkat.
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Install Kitkat
3. wipe data and dalvik (YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR APPS)
4. Restart
If this doesnt work, or results in a bootloop, try again, but this time before flashing kitkat wipe system.
hopefully this helps
