I plan on taking my EVO 3D in to Sprint and want to find out if re-locking the bootloader (HBoot 1.5), and downgrading to hboot 1.4 will show up as "****LOCKED****" or still as "****RELOCKED****".
Also, in your experiences, does it even matter/do the Sprint employees even check the bootloader?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hboot 1.4 doesn't have the locked banner, so if you downgrade it won't say locked, unlocked or relocked.
Whether they care if its relocked probably depends on what you're bringing it in for. Blown speaker, they probably won't care. Depends on the rep really. If you downgrade it, make sure you tell em not to update it or you'll get it back with hboot 1.5.

I haven't flashed anything been running my own for a week Still haven't done that downgrade yet.. Will tho at some point.. I am hboot 1.5

I don't thinks it's too insane .. Just been doing alot in windows ATM .. I have Fedora set up and may take on the downgrade just haven't had time to do it lol.
It's not as hard as you think.
Bricking takes a little bit of careful timing. Also, you might want to give the HBOOT Downgrade Toolkit Live CD in my signature a try.

I got lazy and now I'm paying for it... Used the HTC One Click Root instead of doing it the old fashioned way. Now I seem to not have any image on the phone to boot from... I can not get into recovery only HBOOT.

Don't do anything at all to the phone until (hopefully) bftb0 responds here with detailed instructions. Absolutely do not try to run the RUU from a PC to try to re-flash the stock phone ROM, it could brick it in this instance.
bftb0 will want to know what HBoot version you are on. 1.49 S=OFF, 1.47 S=ON, or what.

Thanks, like I said hopefully btbf0 will chime in here. He is the expert at unbricking. Be comforted by the fact that more than likely it is not really bricked, just a little hiccup that's more than likely recoverable.
btbf0's first step will likely detail how you can go from 1.49 S=ON to 1.49 S=OFF. Having S-OFF enables you even more choices for unbricking.
Probably the easiest thing would just to put the flashback pb(blahblah)img.zip on the SD card and boot with the volume button down.
But I'd wait for bftb0 to chime in.

what exactly does the phone do when you attempt to boot it normal? does it go to a black screen? does it go to splash screen at all? are you able to get any logcat?

I would recommend achieving S=OFF as soon as you're comfortable in doing so. Just please be careful and ask questions first if you have any doubt.
I'm definitely not the expert, so someone else might have to answer some of your questions.
1. I believe that's true re: flashing from hboot.
2. Nandroid does NOT save the bootloader, ever.
Some people might want to get rid of the modified bootloader after running the revolutionary beta to get s-off. It is pretty easy.
Also if you run a RUU you will need to run this to get proper s-off.
1. Get s-off
1a. I recommend not useing clockwork mod and instead installing TeamWin Recovery Project2 .Download the eng bootloader and put it in the root of your sd-card
Link-> PG86IMG_eng-hboot.zip
Rename it to be PG86IMG.zip3. Disable quickboot in system power settings
Shutdown the phone, hold down the volume down button and hit the power/hold button4. Once in the bootloader hitting volume up will ask if you want to update, hit volume up again to accept and then reboot.5. Remove or rename the PG86IMG.zip in order to get into the bootloader again, as it will always try to apply the update.

Whats the difference? Mine says eMMC H.Boot
The eng bootloader has s-off stock, and has more fastboot options. It also removes anything that revolutionary did in the bootloader to get s-off.

When people make recommendations like this, I have to question why? Does CWM brick phones if you use this method? Is there a performance issue when trying this?
Not to be an ass or anything but you have 2 total post in 2 months. Please elaborate this recommendation before you have hundreds of thousands of people following your recommendation. Personal experiences as well as any confirmed bugs that others have experienced would be good.

I have used CWM for evolution, epic, e3d, and Asus TF. Never had anything go wrong. So if some says not to use it, I'd like to know if I need to seek an alternative for each device. No I'm not going to search/read any he said she said post on the internet to find an answer. If the answer has to do with people and not the actual programs themselves, then the recommendation is mute.

Are you saying that Sprint can somehow poll our devices and deduce what bootloader is installed? Or do you mean a Sprint rep with hands-on access? If the latter, I'm fairly certain they would suspect something was up when they saw S-OFF and the ENG bootloader. Either one would be a sure sign that the phone was something other than stock.

Well, most of us who got our E4G on release day and rooted immediately didn't like early versions of CWM because it wouldn't wipe properly or completely sometimes (giving rise to ridiculous multi-wipe scripts). That and all the associated wonkyness that would follow could be eliminated before it began by simply using Amon Ra and avoiding CWM like the plague...
...even though I've used CWM successfully on devices that have no Amon Ra given our collective early experiences with it (and absolute lack of problems with stable versions of Amon Ra) on the E4G we never used anything but Amon Ra and never had any problems....but we did with CWM at one point.
That's likely why he said it and is why you hear that a lot still. Lots of us E4G guys jumped to E3D immediately. Even though CWM fixed that problem I hear we wouldn't know, we used Amon Ra with nary a problem.

A handful of them shipped S-OFF and some of those were probably eng hboots...that and it doesn't say "REVOLUTIONARY" in bright pink at the top...that's a definite giveaway.
If you're going to repost something you could at least link back to where you took everything from...

I forgot about the Revo branding at the top. And I didn't know any shipped s-off. I thought those were Sensations. Regardless, I happy we finally got what we've been waiting for.
hey guys just looking for some info i am bummed i have to get a new phone and i am guessing that it will come with the new hboot. does the power and volume down take you into hboot if your not rooted? if not how can i check if i got it. i read a little bit of the unlock for the new hboot in the one thread but all the posts kinda confused me does it actually unlock it i love the way i can just flash stuff on my phone through recovery now the other way seems to be a pain in the ass lol.
and is that unlock method for after the htc unlock? and if the phone comes with the new hboot will it come with the htc method? sorry for the ton of questions lol. just not entirely sure about the new stuff. just wanna be prepared for when phone comes tomorrow or next.

I wouldn't be so sure. If you are getting a new one, it probably wont be updated yet. If you are getting a reconditioned unit they updated it before they send it out.

What I'm thinking is with HBOOT 1.50 revolutionary won't work and there will have to be a completely different way to root, just like what Revolutionary did.
I was thinking that it might be pointless to crack 1.50 hboot for now with ICS coming soon right? Maybe they are holding of because it would be alot of work for nothing when its going to be updated. Correct me if im wrong hehe

i already got it and they had phone behind counter but i might have to take this one back cause the bottom lights flash on and off so i might try your method if i have to get another one

i dunno but i do know i spoke to 3 big devs at rootwiki and they are willing to come over to the rezound if we get s-off. also probably because they just dropped the price of a rezound to a mere $50.
either way im stoked!
Patience is all we needed . We eventually got unlocked, then ICS leaks, now sense 4.0 with a rumored ics ots friday now maybe s off . Great . Aosp and cm9 hopefully a little after all that too.

Why? I mean, for devs s-off doesn't really do anything, unless there's a way to do it without the HTC Unlock, which might mitigate their concerns about the warranty. It doesn't sound like this s-off method mitigates the warranty issue, for those that have it.

that's why alot of them migrated to the gneuxs because the bootloader can be easily unlocked then relocked to a factory state. it's the same reason alot of moto devices don't get alot of dev supoort. as i said i "heard" if we had s-off alot of other devs might be coming over. nothing is set in stone.
i do wish these guys luck though in achieving s-off for us.

i think its more of an "ease of dealing with things" aspect. while its true,htcdev unlock lets you flash roms and kernels,its a PITA with android info documents,and either launching recovery from fastboot,or jumping thru hoops to get hboot to flash your kernel.
plus,on a personal level an s-off device is muc more fun to have.
i effin knew as soon as i traded my gnex for an s-off rezound that some sort of exploit would be found

Right, but if you're unlocked then even s-off won't bring you back to factory state, unless they figure out a way to use the s-off to get you back to "s-on locked." Otherwise your phone will still show relocked, even if you return from s-off to s-on. And even then, HTC still knows you ran the HTC Unlock tool because you have to get the keys from them.
Edit--basically, s-off is cool, but s-off that requires HTC Unlock seems of dubious utility. It's totally cool, and I welcome the development, but I'm at a loss to figure out what S-off gives me other than flashing radios, which doesn't seem necessary.

id just like to be able to flash radios separate and change the fugly splash screen.
for some reason unknown to me s-on just drives certain devs away.

I think one of the key things about the HTC unlock tool is that you may have requested it, but they have no way of proving that you used it on your phone without having it physically in front of them. I think people worry too much about that tool.

Yeah, I think so too. I don't really give a crap that I may have voided my warranty, it's a non-issue for me.
lets just be happy we may be getting both this and aosp soon. as i said, the more options the better.

it gives you the option to change radios,spash screend,run a patched hboot(for eng commands) and run older RUUs.
if youre willing to htcdev unlock,then the warrany isnt an issue. with s-off you can get back to locked instead of relocked (ive done it on other devices)
you could always claim you never unlocked,and your rezound came with s-off
not to mention s-off means write to boot from recovery,so no more android info files,flastboot flashing,etc
Ive got a bad digitizer and the frame is coming lose from the screen. Ive literally wore the thing out. I am s off with 1.4 and my local sprint store will even trade because of parts back order. The digitizer isnt so bad really...only when really cold. Im certain the phone they give me will be 1.5 and i know it can get s off as of late. Is it that difficult and worth the hassle?

1.5 is fine, you can downgrade, or do the wire trick, or just use HTC unlock.

Just take it back to stock and get another one. With the wiretrick and Jouponutbear it isn't hard anymore or require any linux virtual or box. I did it and never looked back. My digitzer was going crazy and didn't work for crap and I eventually got fed up with it.
You know how it is with forums. It takes long enough to read about the stuff that matters to you much less a different model. I have rooted a couple phones and flashed prolly 500 roms and 100 kernels and such. Prl, boot or splash screen and theme here and there but man have i heard people fuss! Got mine on day 1 so i was lucky and got 1.4. So if i can get a 3D refurb but in great shape i should take the deal? Im not paying i dont think. The way she talked it would be even swap. Pretty cool girl....she is manager of couple stores. I was straight with her about it all. She said sprint rules on rooting are more tolerant than they use to be. She said anybody with much knowledge can simply unroot it so why bother. She fussed at the retard tech who i first talked with and told him he was wrong about all he was saying. There are a few good sprint store people but from my experience almost all of em including the techs are clueless! Not just sprint any carrier.

do the downgrade to 1.4 with the tool kit, it is beyond easy with just a little time. I fretted over the whole thing and regret not doing it sooner. I will say it can be tough to find a good refurb, but then you get practice doing the downgrade.
I downgraded from 1.5 to 1.4 and I might be the only person on the forums that magically got it right the first time. Watch the video and try to get the timing right. Don't stick with 1.5 - it's a joke.
The downgrade isn't very hard at all. You just need to know what you're doing.

1.5 is a better hboot with more features than 1.4, why downgrade when you dont have to...the wire trick takes 5 mins, and the hboot shows locked when done...no brainer.

Hboot 1.50 does nothing "better" than 1.40, if you can find something that it does any differently aside from display the "LOCKED" status and allow for HTC's crappy unlock method... please feel free to prove me wrong.
Besides, you're replacing hboot with a hacked version anyways during the S-OFF process, the feature set of the HBOOT then has nothing to do with what the version numbers here.
ENG Hboot has more features than any hboot...
