Hey Guys,
Over in the development section, there is a number of different region firmwares (6.0.A.3.73). I've read a few posts where the poster claims the Norway version is best. I'm wondering whether anybody knows which one is the best? Or is there no difference?
There's some minor differences in preinstalled apps, but almost nothing in the framework, etc.
I was going to ask the same question. I'm on the sg one and I am a very heavy user but I still need to charge my phone everyday

There are no differences in battery drain between different customizations.
My experience is that .73 did improved slightly on battery life.
The issue of most up to date smart phone is battery consuming, thus we're not required much for 2 or 3 days.
IMO if it can stands for 1 working day with heavy use is enough, then we can charge it at night is fair.
And with. 73 the battery is just get much better, also you can adjust something with Titanium Backup will help you gain more time + Juice defender or Go Power

I am currently using the SG version while I use to have the HK version. What I have noticed so far is that the virtual keyboard layout is somewhat different between the two. Besides that, I didn't noticed a difference in terms of performance. I thought I'd just put this post out there just in case there is in deed a particular region's firmware performs better.
Well, lets say.. the "best" might be the CE1 because its an European generic, no other junk apps.
Let's not forget that it is only .67.
The .73 Central European would be perfect.

Scroll down, also root available

I'm using rooted Central Europe .73
It's very clean and fast. No preinstalled apps like "Astro Explorer", "appXtra...."
in some 73 firmware (i.e. Lebanon) it doesn't have SEA-enabled input methods (i.e. Chinese/Japanese IME)

Hello xda comunity,
I would like to begin by saying that I've been using Nokia phones so far no matter what their OS was just because of the hardware. Long story short, I am getting dissapointed by my new Lumia 800 and I want to switch to Android as soon as the next Nexus with JB is released. I can see that between Windows Phone and Android is a huge difference regarding hacking and tweaking because Android is an open source.
My question is: Without any knowledge about the Android OS, will switching be easy ( keeping stock OS and ROMs and Kernels ), or I will spend weeks to try and find better ROMs and get into hacking my device??
Switching is easy , no need to be anxious nexus devices especially are easy

Is there any difference between using a phone bought from the store ( stock ) and using it with custom ROMs, Kernels, stuff??
Yeah, it can be. Some roms are really similar to stock, but with some tweaks to improve performance and battery. But other roms are completely different, just take a look at miui. Both miui and cm supports themes, so you can change how it looks to your liking
For many phones custom roms also gives the user access to newer android versions than what's avaible officially, though that is probably not the case with a nexus device
Kernels can be tweaked to improve performance and battery and also usually supports overclocking, so you can let it work on higher speeds to improve performance, but this reduces battery life.

Yeah.. one of my biggest concerns about moving to Android is losing the things that Nokia is known for: Battery life and Strong Signal. Will my future Nexus last a full day without any "battery saving app"?? Are there any problems with the signal?? I know my questions sound dumb, but I'm used to hate Android and I don't trust myself right now
Well you're battery life can be extended to 2/3 days with moderate/light use, but frankly, dont expect to get nokia levels of battery life. However I'm sure with the right radio/modem you can get great signal. Plus there are loads of tweaks to improve connection speeds/signal etc so you'll be fine there.
As mentioned earlier, a custom rom, especially the really modified ones, can improve your battery life, speed, ease of use, amount of features and the look and feel of your phone immensely!
As for ease of coming to android, it's pretty easy. I got my phone, watched a few tutorial vids/read some threads and had my phone rooted and running a custom rom in a matter of hours. Nexus/Samsung devices i find are especially easy to use/customize
I'm just generally asking peoples opinions, not which rom is best, or which provides the most battery life. But just generally we all know there has been slight decrease in battery since ICS and Jellybean, and I do remember having at least a bit more battery life than I do now when I was on GB. So people's opinions, does anyone think it's worth going back to GB?
No. It's like asking 'Would you rather go back to Windoze 3.1 ?' (A: Only if I can go back to 1993). Making an absolute statement like 'Battery life running GB stock is better than running ICS or JB stock' is nonsense. For some people & some phone setups, sure, they might well get better battery life running GB stock. And for a whole bunch of other people, that won't be the case.
So it's not a particularly meaningful question to begin with due to the variables involved.
Bungle is right.GB is very old.A lot of apps are made to support Android 4.0/4.1 +.With GB you will lose this
Battery life was better on gb but jb is so much faster, smoother and better looking! so its worth the extra battery usage
Haha well I do like the extra performance and looks but I'd also like the extra battery life, trying to find a balance in ROMs and kernels just to find my phone to last a whole day without being used and losing 50% battery is really hard for me D:

for me GB is an escape pod for people who needs a lot of ram and would like the old vs the new, since the JB uses up a lot of ram even from just stock apps but lacks style and interface, it's ugly when you look at it from a person who has a JB. S
Rooted stock GB for me,with speedmod kernel.
I wouldnt use anything else.
Why are you using GB theunderling? What are the exact benefits?
I'm also thinking about going back to GB

I use it because it works as it should and has the best battery life;for me.
Ive tried loads of custom roms and Ive found theres always one problem or other,or the battery life is poor.
This isnt criticism of developers work, but I just use what I said earlier with the Samsung bloatware removed.
And these type of threads arent advised,as theres 1000s of different setups available which work differently for each user;thus can result in arguments.

The poll in the sticky is very outdated (no option for KitKat) and requests to have it reset seem to have gone unheard for months now, so I thought I'd just make a new poll.
Feel free to add your thoughts on the pros/cons of the different Android versions and how they run on the Xperia Ray.
Personally, I'm curious to know how many others are running KitKat and how they think it stacks up against the previous versions in terms of responsiveness, battery life and features. This could provide a good starting point for others in their search for a ROM that fits their needs.
Hi, interesting poll and request.
I'm still on ICS (stock based superleggera v7) and I tried a couple of KK ROMs, but I had to revert to ICS because of very bad battery life. Even using tasker and greenify to limit battery drain my ray did not survive for an entire day (1 phone call, some SMS and IM, an hour of browsing/rss/pocket).
Also some application were not so responsive, but I think it was because of too aggressive tasker/greenify settings.
Too bad because I wanted to try how google now (and uber!) would fit in my daily usage... But maybe it's time to buy a more recent phone!
Anyone Notice any performances differences between any Generic or Branded FTF ?
The Vodafone UK one seems a bit laggy with the home button and other small things while Vodafone IE is fine.
Anyone Run a specific Carrier Branded firmware on there D6503?
Wouldnt if anything the carrier branded be more stable and generic as they would have a larger base?
Thanks
There are 0 performance changed across all the FTFs ive ever used
Branded or not theyve all shown the same benchmarks and statistics after flashing (not identicle but 42k every time within a few hundred)

Wasnt really asking for benchmarks They dont mean much to me its how the firmware feels, Like I said the Vodaphone UK firmware I have performance issues with it.

Some brands which clutter more apps do seem to feel slower
Unbranded ones should be the fastest due to less bloatware, RU fws feel the fastest due to least bloatware
Hi,
New user here, I have a my Z5 Compact as a spare phone and to run my UK sim while I'm living in NZ. So it's not my day to day phone.
I sometimes use it while away hiking/running long distances as a spare with it being more waterproof than my normal NZ phone.
So I don't have lots of apps installed, use it in a very simple way and want good battery life, reliability and minimum amount of bloat and bundled un-required apps etc.
The phone currently runs 6.0.1 build 23.5.A.1.291 and is not offering any OTA updates, it says it's up to date which is strange. Is this a carrier issue due to the fact I have a UK sim card in but currently connected via a NZ network?
I've seen reports of bad battery usage etc on the newer versions, with this in mind should I stick with 6.0.1 or seek to try and upgrade in some other way?
Thanks
I highly recommend staying with 6. Nougat is giving me pretty low battery life. The excessive cpu usage and sluggish ui problem can be resolved by disabling movie maker {that is how I am limping along on Nougat }
