[Q] Screen Discolouration - Could I claim on warranty? - Nokia Lumia 800

I've recently got some odd discolouration on my lumia 800 screen. I got it in December and I've treated it well. I'm just wondering, do you think this is covered by warranty? (I'm with Orange UK) Or is this an insurance job?

Simply put, it depends how bad the discolouration is.. But I was on Orange and they were very helpful to me in the past when I have had faulty phones.
However it is within the 12 months of purchase it should be covered under Manufacturers Warranty, so look up Nokia's terms as well.
My best advise would be to take it into an Orange shop and show them and see what they say. It used to be if it went faulty within 1 week Orange would do a swap and within the 1 year they will send it back to Nokia for repair.

thanks for the reply i'll go talk to them. here's a picture of my screen. The discolouration is in a radius under the camera button.

Defective screen ? (White spot)H

Hi,
Today I've noticed a little white spot only visible under white/light colors background.
This picture isn't very clear (it is much more visibile than it seems) but I think it gives an idea.
Any one with the same problem? My phone never fell, doesn't have a single scratch and I always carry it inside the leather case.
Since I bought it through expansys do I have to send it back to them or can I go directly to an official repair center here in Portugal ?
I have the same, in similar(or the same) place. It is just slightly brighter spot.
Also ordered it from Expansys, but I am not going to send it back for replacement now. Do not want to loose my Leo for few weeks, I just love this phone
I have a similar white spot on my screen too. It wasn't present when I bought it. I can't understand what generated it.
I Too
I had the same problem. I bring my phone to service. They replace touch display with new one (I have 2 year warranty ).
I have the same problem. Sent it back to seller and now waiting for almost 4 weeks for repairs.
fortunately i have no that white spot...
Same problem here, sent it direct to HTC and they replaced the screen.
it also happened to me.
i had that problem, the only difference is i know where i got it from. i was sitting on a seat and the phone was put under some pressure and the screen stuck to itself thats the only way i can describe it. then it poped back out and left that strange white mark where it had stuck to itself, so thats a lesson to me (and you) do not under any circumstances have your phone in your pocket when sitting down. i had it repaired under warrenty and every things ok now, i make sure i dont pressure the screen at all now!!
Have a look at this thread (in which there is another as well):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5668097
i had the same problem. just got it back after i brought it in and they replaced the screen. i didn't even begin to try anything myself. now it'd perfect again.
good luck!
cheers, ftrippie
I have a white spot to, right in the middle of the screen, and its the backlight that comes thru a lite more. Nothing that bothers me though since it's not really a defect - unless you don't want it to be, of course.
I sent my HD2 to the service because of the white spot....They told me it will take between 3-10days (I suppose it is the standard response).
Now let's wait....
I had a thread about this too. Very annoying so I emailed HTC and they told me to send it to a service centre for repair.
The problem is that I bought mine on Ebay and after they have the serial number they've told me it was bought in Czech republic so it has to be sent there.
I don't fancy doing that really - what bloody difference does it make which centre it goes to? ALL of these phones are still under warrantee so it shouldn't matter!!
Mine was assembled in Czech republic too but this is happening for all HD2 sold here. I will call Monday to check if they should replace the screen here or they have to send it there.
Today I've got back my HD2 from service after 12days.
They changed the screen and made me a rom update to 1.66.479.2.
Im having the same problem, the CPU is causing it. when you have "overheated" your phone, you can see it. I'm having a very cleary seeable rectangle in the screen. currently im E-mailing with HTC Support for Replacing the screen, or the whole phone!
This is exactly the issue I has, white blurry patches started appearing on my screen, with one in particular very prominent. I re-flashed the network firmware off the memory card, removing the HSPL and returned it to O2 for repair. I got it back 8 days later with a brand new screen.

You clearly have a different issue if you think that.
I had my screen replaced due to this problem & now only 2 months after I have the same problem and getting progressivly worse. Not Happy.
I am lost without my phone, it was hard enough the first time, waiting ages as they didn't have any screens in stock!! nevermind the thought of having to send it off again for a second time!!!
Really bloody annoying but my new screen is starting to develop the same issue. As I said above I had my previous screen replaced because of this a few months back and now I can see some more appearing. I can only assume HTC use bad quality LCDs because I have a 2g iPhone which is nearly 3 years old and it has never suffered with this and hasn't been treated any different than my Leo.
I'm not amused but I will send it back again to be repaired, using sub-standard components will cost them more than me.
White Spot visible on light backgrounds
Same here - refer attached.
Have made background darker to highlight this white spot.
The white spot resembles a 'feathered effect' as opposed to a 'solid spot'.
Red circle shows actual white spot on screen (may not be visible when viewing from a monitor / notebook), hence my attached image with darkened area.
It is only visible on light backgrounds.
Just to mention, I sent in my HD2 to LEAF South Africa yesterday May 13 2010, who completed the repair the same day!!!
LEAF really are superb in South Africa and a credit to HTC.
Thank you Wayne Parkinson of LEAF SA who took care of the details (as always), and their dedicated Support/Repair Team who did the rest.
Beat that HTC Worldwide
My sympathies to those experiencing delays.
Just bring your device to South Africa.
(No wonder the FIFA World Cup was awarded to our neck of the woods!)
I have a similar issue only that its only visible when viewing a bright screen and at a wide angle I see some light spot, its impossible to see it when viewing the screen directly. Can you tell me if it a spot on the screen or below it, or some deffect on the lcd. If its on the surface of the screen how do I safely try to remove it.

Blur in left side of photos

I noticed on some of my pics a blur on the left side and most others do not. When the background is farther away it seems blury compared with the 900 photos which don't do that. I will post a sample of a pic of my motorcycle later, but I was wondering if anyone else noticed that.
Due to the smaller aperture size you get a reduced depth of field. Therefore if you focus on something farther away things that are nearer will turn out blurry at some point. Similarily if you focus on something near you the background will blur. That effect is well known in photography: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field
Most phone camera lenses have a very large depth of field due to their small size. I guess that is the reason for the effect you're having. In regular cameras or at least SLRs you can adjust the aperture to change this but with smartphones it's constant.

Sounds reasonable, but it does not explain the reason the left side is worse than the right... here are some samples of what I mean.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0kh2recr74d1o0a/WP_20121205_002.jpg From the front tire to the tree on the far left, and look at the distance on the right... fairly ok.
Again
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yikkpiymypxsm2t/WP_20121130_012.jpg Look at the focus on the right compared to the left at the same distance... you can also see by the left end of the bike it is out of focus. I have plenty of indoor shots that are perfect, some out door. However, it seems the outdoor shots are having the most trouble. Right side looks ok.. left side not so good.

Different story
That looks like either gunk on your lens, or an actual hardware problem (either with the image stabilization system or the AF lense)
That does not look like normal DOF focus.

Cleaned the heck out of the lens, no change. Bought the phone on Craigslist so calling Nokia... will see where that gets me.
Its the lens .. the N8 had a similar issue. All in all the only Carl Zeiss lens on a phone that deservers the name and it somewhat performs accordingly is the one on the 808.

My N8 had the out of focus problem on the right of every picture. My 920 doesn't have the problem so it's worth getting your checked by Nokia.
Bad lens or assembly problem.
WARNING!!!!!
Called Nokia support on this issue and eventually they had me do a hard reset. This had the gears on a spinfest! After an hour I reset the phone and all that would come up is the Nokia logo. Apparently others have called on the battery issue and had the same problem. If you aren't ready to up and send the phone back to Nokia... say it's the weekend and you called on a minor issue.... Never fear, I fixed mine on my own.... using the Nokia care suite. Treat it as you are refurbishing a non booting phone. It had me up and running. With the blurry lens unfortunately. http://www.mediafire.com/?xos6ckvsas5xkdi#!
I wanted to update this thread
No receipt, who knows where it came from, paid for at a used phone price, Went down to AT&T to get a SIM for a Radar I bought off Craigslist as a backup unit... They covered the phone with a lens issue, they did not have one to swap out in the store so they overnighted me a replacement. Much better photos all the way around! I was pleasantly surprised.
basically sometime is the lens blurry.. need to get nokia care to clean the lens and it should be ok

Eventhough I bought the phone on Craigslist used, AT&T took care of it right away. The photos all the way around seem to be coming out better. Maybe there was dirt back there or the lens was messed up, I don't know. All is perfect now, some of the photos are jaw dropping what a mobile phone can produce.

I guess I wasn't clear on that... you get in a rush sometimes.. I wanted to keep people updated on that becuase what happened with support and how I was able to bring the phone back to life.
I strongly urge anyone who buys a Nokia Phone to have the care suite... just in case.
Here is what happened at the At&t store: I called Nokia support.. went through the reset game and filled out the RMA form. I talked with At&t briefly about my situation. I bought a Radar to use temporarly, the plan was to unlock it and sell it when I get a new one. Unfortunately it uses and older SIM so I was told by AT&T phone support how they would deal with that. When I went to the store I told the front counter I needed a replacement SIM. The salesperson asked what was wrong with the phone and I told him about the focus issue. I told him I bought the phone elsewhere. I was then told as long as it is a branded AT&T and under warranty they will take care of it. He sent me back to the support area. They appoligized they did not have any replacement phones on hand, it can take a couple months. The support person overnighted me a replacement phone. The next day I had what looks like a brand new phone. For $380 I ended up with a new lumia 920... not bad
Nice makes sense as if its an AT&T branded 920 they all have a one year warranty and (i believe) it should be regardless of owner and based on hardware
I'm on the same boat. I bought my Lumia 920 locally since the only carrier that sells the phone here in Canada is Rogers. Now, I am having overheating issues and would like to get a replacement. Hopefully Nokia will let me get another one even though I have no receipt. I'll call them tomorrow to see if it's possible.

Just in case you are still unaware, I am sure the warranty is the same in Canada... it does not matter.. the form for RMA asks for your IMEI number. Name and address, nothing else. No proof of purchase. First though, I would take to Rogers. You never know, I got a way better deal at AT&T over Nokia.

Have you read about Nokia locking down access sometime in Mid January to its ROMs and firmwares that are available on their site. We may need to figure out a different way to get past this problem.

Sent in my s4 to be looked at by Samsung repair... now I need some advice please!

So, I sent in my s4 for repair to the repair center in Texas and it seems to have been reviewed. I was told before to send it to them from the Verizon store because I noticed a bubble probably the size of a sesame seed (or smaller) at the top left of the screen. The representative at verizon said that it was most likely a defect in the pixels and to send it in to be looked at. So I did that and sent it in about a week ago and they have put on the repair status Screen / Display / LCD / Touch Panel / LED / LCD Discoloration HPZ31 and they have attached a price of $200 to repair it! I most definitely won't pay this price, if this issue won't cause any long term damage in the future, because it is such a small dot that you can barely see and would not be worth the cost.
I was told that this issue should be covered by the warranty, however because it shouldn't have been caused by physical damage. I have not damaged my phone at all (only accidentally dropped the phone once when it fell out of my pocket on my driveway and the screen wasn't damaged at all or the phone itself.) My phone has always been protected by a case and screen protector btw. So, would there be any way to get this issue repaired without being charged? I haven't called Samsung yet, but plan on calling them tomorrow. Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated and thank you for your time and patience!
If it's that small an issue I don't think I would worry about it imho. Of course now that you know it's there it probably bugs you a bit, lol. Is it worth 200 bucks to stop it from bugging you. Does it interfere with the color display at all, like when the phone is being used is it more visible or is that the only time it is visible. ??

Speaker failure, anyone else? Not new warranty replacement.

After exactly 30 days the top speaker on my Note 8 has failed. It sounds like any other blown speaker with very scratchy distorted sound. Proven by switching back and forth to speaker phone during a call. I'm disappointed that a $1k phone has such a problem, but it happens. Anyone else?
I'm more disappointed with how the problem is being handled. I went to the T-Mobile store I purchased it from. They confirmed it was broken. They inspected inside the phone after removing the SD/SIM holder and looked closely at the USB port. Not sure what for. Water indicator? Is this not a water resistant phone?
Their answer was to order a replacement even though they have the phone in stock. I need to pay $20+tax shipping and the phone would be in sometime next week. When I asked about tax on shipping, not normal in my state, I was told it wasn't really shipping but a warranty replacement fee! Really?! A fee for a warranty failure out of my control?
When I asked about why not just replace it with one in stock I was told that the warranty replacements are not new phones. What?!!!
When I got home I called T-mo CS and got a huge run around, passed off to Samsung, then back to T-Mo, with nothing getting resolved other than to say, in English I could barely understand, they would look into it.
So.... where I stand I see that I paid almost $1000 for the flagship Samsung phone 30 days ago. T-Mobile agrees it has failed. Their answer is to charge me some nickel and dime fee to get a used phone, in who knows what condition, sometime next week. The Samsung answer is to send the phone to them (at my expense) and they will repair it. I could expect it back in about 3 weeks. I am able to make calls using the speaker phone but what if my phone had failed completely. BTW, I also found out that you are only allowed 3 warranty replacements so I better hope I don't get two more failures, even though it's not my fault.
Adding insult to injury is that I am eating my $50 Whitestone Dome.
Samsung, first I lived thru your Note 7 fiasco now this with the Note 8. My customer loyalty is about gone.

Try T-Mobile's Twitter feed. They seem more responsive than any other method.
I will say that I found their experience exasperating when I was trying to work through the Note 7 fiasco. Four or five CS techs would give me a different story each time, with two outright lying about shipping information on the loaner phone. I dropped a tweet on John Legere's account to express my displeasure and within 20 minutes a senior customer service rep called to help work things out. I had to tweet them several more times to work out the billing issues left over from the Note 7 but from that point forward, I have nothing but praise for T-Mobile's customer service.
Thanks for the advice.
To top it off I've discovered the store popped up the edge of my before perfect installed Whitestone dome so now there is air under it. Never again am I letting some store buffoon take off my case.
I left AT&T because of how they handled me during the Note 7 mess. They also gave me conflicting directions and kept charging me monthly for a phone I paid cash for.
I'm not sure what part of the world CS is in but I can't understand them and told them dozens of times to speak slowly no exaggeration. I had to go over my name 8 times! It's real hard two 4 letter words.

It just keeps getting better. Sorry for the rant.

Devestated V30 screen

I am totally devastated, dropped my precious V30, usually with the case and the great care I usually take the fall is never particularly bad and even now the phone does not have a single scratch on it. It fell from almost waist height flat on the screen. I picked it up, screen was intact and it had a few discoloured pixels almost like dead pixels in the top right corner. Too my dismay however a few hours later this had turned into a small rectangle box completely black no pixels which over the next few days turned into larger black patch with rounded edges. At this stage it was manageable I could bring myself to accept it but after a few more days the screen started flickering white when the phone was switched on and off and now it flickers on occasion constantly sometimes not. What do you guys think are my chances of getting this repaired on warranty, it is rooted, but I can return to stock. I have a p20 pr but the audio is just so far away from the quality the LG provides.
If not what is it likely to cost via LG. I don't really want to send it to a back street repair shop after the experience I had with a replacement screen on a G1(2008), they often don't repair it neatly. Yes that's the only other time when I have ever cracked a phone screen.
LG charged me $146 to replace the cracked display on my wife's LG V30. It was considered an out of warranty repair.
I shipped it to them in Texas and the $146 even included them shipping it back via FedEx.
I told about it here, about halfway down the first page...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/help/ive-sent-phone-repair-warranty-theyre-t3838980
I had to pay to ship it to them, but they shipped it back for free. I called them on the phone, they quoted me the price, I paid them on the phone. They emailed me the address.

My wife cracked display on her LG v30 US998, something which is not covered under warranty. So I sent it to LG for an out-of-warranty repair, which cost $146 US dollars + my own UPS shipping to LG in Texas. So $164 total. They replaced the display, and my payment to them even included FedEx shipping back to me! It took a week, I got it back a few days ago, it's as good as new.
While it was gone, I switched her over to one of the Sprint LS998 V30+ that I bought cheap off eBay, which I converted to US988 V30+, which DOES have bootloader unlocked. Her V30 was not bootloader unlocked, and is still under the 2 year warranty, but dropped/cracked displays aren't covered under warranty.

Since I knew the severely cracked display wasn't covered under warranty, first I went to one of those cell phone display repair franchises. And that I had to ship it to them. I said OK.

The actual repair receipt is vague. Lists serial, IMEI, etc and says
SYMPTOM: EXTERNAL PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE PHONE.
REPAIR: physical damage.
Warranty type: out of warranty
Lists date received, date returned.
I would post a screenshot but I would need to block off all the serial and IMEI and stuff.

Copied and pasted details above. Maybe I lucked out, by calling LG customer service (instead of online chat, etc.) I told them the phone was under warranty but was a cracked display. They said that wasn't covered under warranty (which I already knew), but I told them I still needed it repaired, please. So, they asked if I would authorize and pay for an out-of-warranty repair? I said, yes, how much? They consulted and said $146. At that point, they hadn't even seen the phone.
So, I said OK, got put on hold for like 10 minutes -- thought I had been disconnected, but luckily I didn't hang up. A customer service rep with Korean accent then came on and took my credit card number. They said they would send me email confirming this, but they didn't, initially.
(I did have a PayPal email receipt, so I had proof.)
I called them back two days later, and fortunately I had kept the incident number (I had written it down on a fast food coupons page). I referenced that, and then they sent me the email with the shipping address. I had already paid, I just needed the address to send the phone, which turned out to be in Texas.
Thanks so much for this post. I dropped my 2-wk old V30 resulting in a severely cracked display. Sent it for a repair by requesting the service online (lgmobilerepair.com) and got the phone back as a brand new phone. Took some time due to the holidays but the phone arrived within 3 days after the repair was completed. Luckily, my credit card company covered the bill under the purchase protection.
I got my screen replaced from my old V30. Although they are supposed to glue it shut with same materials my repaired device didn't retain IP68. A quick splash of water to wipe the screen, a few days later I see some fog in my front camera. Just don't test the limits of repaired device IP rating.
