[Q] Version coding - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a simple question I haven´t been able to get a clear answer for. Can someone clarify the difference between the version? For example out of the following 3 which is newer?
XXLPS
XWLP4
XWLP7
I was under the impression that the last digit went from 1-9 and then a-z but I´d like to be sure if it´s like this or letters first and then numbers.
Thanks in advance.

Samsung decided to make their version coding more confusing for ICS, but I'll see if I can help you out.
This list is in release date order from oldest to newest, build date and release date don't always follow the same order.
ROM - Build Date
XXLPQ - March 9, 2012
DXLP7 - March 10, 2012
XWLP2 - March 16, 2012
XWLP3 - March 23, 2012
XXLPS - March 25, 2012
XWLP4 - March 26, 2012
BULPC - April 2, 2012
XWLP8 - April 6, 2012
XWLP7 - April 3, 2012

Thanks for that. Is there anywhere I can get an explanition of the coding? Right now I´m using XXLPS and looking for an update so I´m going to give XWLP7 a try but I´d like to understand a bit better how it goes for future updates.

What it USED to be, the first two letters were country/carrier codes, and the last three letters/numbers indicate year, month, and build.
So for example, XXKI3 (an old version), XX indicates a region of Europe, and K = 2011 (K is the 11th letter), I = September (9th letter), and 7 is the build number.
See here - it's in the Galaxy Note section, but Samsung uses the same codes for most of their mobile device products.
However, as you can see, the current ICS codes don't follow this convention. So who knows how they are coding them now.

All new official Samsung releases are posted to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487 generally less than an hour after they are available, best thing to do right now is just follow that thread for updates.

How to read Android release code

Not sure If I am even calling it correctly. I can follow the order of say 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 as it being Gingerbread releases. What is the rest of the code called and how do you read it. Example uckh7 and uckk6, each letter and number must mean somthing can anyone enlighten me? I understand that kk6 came after kk4 but if i knew the codes it would be helpful.

I covered this in a more detailed manner somewhere else, but this is how Samsung labels their builds for a device:
First two letters - carrier/region code. UC = AT&T, XX and XW are unbranded European regions
Next letter - year. K = 2011, L = 2012
Next letter - month of year. A = January, etc.
Last number - build number of the month for that device.
e.g. UCKK6 is Samsung's 6th build of November 2011 for AT&T on the AT&T GS2. XWKL1 is the first build of December 2011 for one of the unbranded European regions for the I9100.
Some devices use alternate build identification schemes. I9000 was XXJV[a,b,c,d,e,etc] - ICS leaks for the I9100 replace the year with "P".
Thanks you so much. Now I can better compare ROMs and make sure I'm not moving backwards.

Sometimes moving forwards in time is moving backwards in performance or functionality - UCKK6 was pretty much a universal step backwards compared to UCKH7 for example, especially when it comes to anything wifi-related.
Coming from a cappy I have been very happy with the battery life etc on my S2, It's been rooted but is 2.3.4 UCKH7 kernel 2.6.35.7. So no major reason to upgrade other than personal preferance?

[Q] Where do I find the changelist for official firmware?

Hey guys,
Title says it all - I see changelist id's with newly released official firmware, but never a changelog of what's changed!
Eg.
Base Firmware: I9100XWLPF (4.0.3)
Country Italy
Carrier: Unbranded
Build Date: 18th May 2012
Modem: XXLPX
CSC: OXILP6
Change List: 592261
If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be fantastic.
Cheers
It is well known that Samsung doesn't release official changelogs, mainly because Samsung doesn't give a **** about you or me.
Ah ok, thought that was the case. No matter what I searched for, couldn't find anything lols..
Thanks!

3 (UK) Network - got my first OTA update

This happened this morning 1st August around 8am (I didn't know what was happening at first lol) but yup, it went through a full update. My settings are now:
Android version 4.0.4
Baseband version I9300NELF1
Kernel Version 3.0.15-705505-user [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jun 11 22:24:05 KST
Build number IMM76D.I9300XXALF6
Problem is I have no idea what any of these numbers were before lol... anybody got any ideas what's changed if anything? I can't see anything obvious. Thanks!
You now have firmware version LF6 .
You could join XDA and flash newer firmware .
jje
well to be honest with my old Galaxy S (1) I was a compulsive flasher... trying out new ROMS all the time to try to get that perfect user experience (ended up on Kang), but with this S3? I'm actually enjoying it stock... it's so fast it doesn't feel like much needs changing at all. I think I'd quite like to *not* flash anything over it for a while lol. Leave it as it came. Just curious what, if anything changed with this update
what he means that newer official firmwares are available. The latest being LG8. Not asking you to flash a custom/pseudo custom rom
I've just had this update too this morning. Good to see three are applying yesterday's technology today!
I had some issue with the stock Samsung firmware which disappeared when I reinstalled the three firmware.
I think I need to do some cache clear before I re-attempt stock firmware again.
ahhhh ok I'm with you! Thanks

Thank you for your post.
I am on 3 UK and flashed a custom ROM which stopped people being able to hear me during phone calls. I have spent hours trying to sort this problem out flashing random things and going back to and stock, restoring Nandroids... everything. However, because of your post I tried installing the new Baseband (modem) you said was in the OTA update and it has fixed the problem!!
There are quite a few people with this problem around XDA and we have found the solution so thank you.
