Flash before root? - HTC EVO 3D

Hello. I'm new to the whole flashing and rooting process. Last time I hacked a phone was waaayyyy back in 2004 or 2005 when I used to hack my Motorola v505. The question I have is do you have to root your phone before flashing it? If not, what exactly can I do after flashing my phone?

Yes, you should root before flash....if reversed, you might have to flash again.

I get what your saying kinda. But what I wonder is if I could flash my phone without having to root to get it to do certain things. Would there be a benefit for flashing instead of rooting? Such as would I be able to use custom themes or roms or anything along those lines JUST by flashing? Is there anything I can do by only flashing my Evo 3D?

flashing
is your devise cdma or is it a gsm ethere way you would have to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery and then you can flash a rom and if you want full nand unlock and s off then you would need to down grade your hboot number as well

My Evo 3D is cdma I believe. And being that I purchased it December 26 I believe that the hboot is the 1.50. So assuming I downgrade and unlock the bootloader all I have to do is flash to use a custom rom? No root?

I believe you will have to root your phone or the flash a rom because your hboot has to be s off for you to flash recovery which would let you flash a rom
I would recommend close ones downgrade iso . 1.5 can only be unlocked using htcs hboot unlock. and to be honest I don't like them knowing what I do with my phone .follow the steps on his guide and you should be able to downgrade to 1.4

its opposite LOL.......you unlock bootloader first , then flash recovery and then flash any Rom or a flashable superuser.zip which will root your phone.
@OP
You can unlock your bootloader using htcdev.com if you don't want to downgrade.
After unlocking, I suggest to flash 4ext recovery as it can flash boot partitions even though you are s-on....then you can flash any custom ROMs of your choice .You don't need root to flash ROMs or other stuffs , you need a unlocked bootloader to flash. Root is just having superuser app and binary in your phones system ... Once your bootloader is unlocked you can flash any ROMs . All custom ROMs here comes pre rooted

Ok so from my understanding of what you said, all i have to do is unlock the bootloader with htcdev.com, then use something called 4ext, then im good to go and can flash roms? Also, once i do this will i be able to intall some kind of screen rotation animation to my evo3d? I would like a nice animation and so would that be possible to do if i follow the above steps? and thank all of you for your help.

@bubbylee,
See the Hboot 1.50 guide in my signature if ur not planning on the Hboot downgrade to 1.40 yet. Lots of details/answers to common questions to help u along.

Yes you can do everything what hboot 1.4 users can, except flashing radios/firmware.....I still suggest to downgrade the hboot as it makes your phone fully unlocked . Hboot 1.5 needs PC for flashing some stuffs. You cannot flash PG86IMGs without relocking your bootloader if you are on hbooot 1.5 .
For transition effects and anims , there is an app in the play store which works on every phone and every Rom provided your phone Rom is rooted......
NOTE: Unlocking bootloader will void some parts of your warranty...

This stuff is confusing and complicated lol I folowed the guide and ive hit a spot where the guide says i need a linux pc to downgrade from 1.5 to 1.4 i believe. So no go lol i only have windows. but its poible for me to flash without downgrading right? ill take that route if possible.

Yeah its so easy , try closeone's disc. it a live cd meaning you don't need to install Linux, just insert the disc and Linux will boot up. I downgraded hboot too and I had never used Linux before .

So are you saying that if i flash then install a custom pre rooted rom from here that my phone will be rooted just from flashing a pre rooted rom? Also, I believe I'm going to go the HTC.dev route. Seems simple enough and make little more sense to me.

The HTC dev method gave me problems with the WiMAX so if you don't use or have WiMAX use the HTC dev method. But again Closeone's bootable linux live cd is just as easy as HTC dev and is getting easier. Plus , its better to have s-off since its easier to flash roms (Unless you have 4ext recovery) then you'll be in hboot 1.4 and you could update (using another method so that you don't lose s-off) back to hboot 1.5. . If you want I'll give you links to make you're life easier.

[Q] How to put viperboy on evo 3d

i need help on this i unlocked the bootloader through htc but when i go min to the bootloader it doesnt let me choose anything plz help.
did u root your evo 3d?
idk i thought thats what unlocked bootloader software was
unlocking the bootloader is different. u have to root your evo 3d first, then you can flash roms.
oh ok what did you use to root it
use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192245
He doesnt have to root to flash roms, after he unlocks all he has to do is flash a recovery and then he can flash whatever he wants. But keep in mind since you unlocked with HTC you will have to flash the kernel separately or use the method in this post.

but if he roots and then flashes a rom, that rom will most likely be rooted already. viperrom is pre rooted. So if he roots, installs recovery and then flashes a rom that rooting he did is just an extra step that doesnt need to get done since when he flashes viper it will get overwritten. If he was staying on the stock rom then he should root it, but pretty much all of the roms have root built in(except the RUU stock roms)

[Q] HTCdev bootloader or downgrade to 1.4?

I have a completely stock 3D with hboot 1.5, s-on, software 2.17. I want to gain root access in order to flash custom roms and such.
I saw a walk through on how to do this via HTCdev bootloader. I've also read about downgrading to hboot 1.4 and achieving s-off.
What are the advantages of downgrading to 1.4 and achieving s-off vs. sticking with 1.5 and s-on by using the HTCdev method?
Well fort you want be registered as having messed with your device to prevent a void in your warranty. The others are you can flash without any programs needed to install a kernel also you can flash splash screens. Flashing radios is also a benefit of soff. But soff will allow you to actually brick your device vs having just bootloader unlocked.

Keep this in mind... S-off is great but you can fully permabrick your device with s-off, hard to do but it can be done. S-on blows but I'm pretty sure you can fix anything but a hardware failure with the unbrick method.

Since my roommate is doing it for me (his computers and computer knowledge are way more capable than mine) I let him decide which way he was going to do it. We ended up going with the HTC bootloader unlock.
We got it successfully unlocked through the bootloader but it still doesn't have root access. Like, apps that require root won't work and he can't get anything to flash on it. Suggestions?

Next order of business... unlocking my friends' phone. She got hers in January (preloaded with hboot1.5 and 2.17). Can't get it to unlock via HTC bootloader unlock. I did read that there is a problem getting the newer ones that shipped with the updated software to unlock. I understand you need the 2.08 RUU. I found an active link and downloaded the file... Now what do I do with the thing?
Where did you find the working ruu I need one. I honestly think you just rename it to pg86img put it on the root of your sd card and hold down vol down and power. Once it loads into bootloafer it will scan the file and ask you if you want to flash it over.

CDMA HBOOT 1.50 Boost Mobile

I have an HTC EVO 3D That I purchased yesterday, and It's been flashed to Boost Mobile (A company owned and operated by Sprint) Boost is a CDMA service. I am interested in rooting my device, but when I tried this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218193 I was stopped because my HBOOT isn't supported. Baffled, I went searching the forums and found this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547695 unfortunately, I'm not sure if it's safe to proceed with this procedure, because I wasn't there when my phone was flashed, and I don't know if HTC Dev was used. Furthermore, I don;t know if I have S-On of S-OFF, because I didn't flash my phone. Also, it has come to my understanding that linux is required for that method of HBOOT downgrade. Is there any way I can avoid that? It's kind of a lot of trouble.
You can check if you're s-on or s-off by looking at the top of the hboot screen. Pull the batt, put it back in, hold vol down + power.
If you don't have s-off, the downgrade is easy, linux is easy. After the downgrade you have to use revolutionary.io to achieve s-off and it'll likely screw up your boost flash. I'll edit with a thread link for prepping to downgrade with a carrier flashed phone.

Hboot says I have S-ON. By following the steps in that link you'll give, will I be able to restore my flash without losing MMS and 3G, etc.?
I'm really not sure, I've never flashed a phone. If you don't mind me asking, why do you want s-off? It's nice to have because it makes flashing roms easier but its not required to flash roms, and if your not sure you can flash your phone back, its probably not worth the risk.

Well the whole idea is that i need to downgrade HBOOT in order to root, and I was under the impression that to downgrade Hboot i needed to have S-OFF.
No, you just need to unlock at htcdev. Then you can root, give me a sec and ill give you another link. Once you think you can flash your phone to boost, I suggest getting s-off. Just less issues with s-off flashing.
Edit... A lot of guides out there, check the roll up sticky thread. This one will probably work. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821

From what I remember, if you boot a recovery from fastboot (fastboot boot recovery.img), you wouldn't need to extract any boot image. When you boot a recovery from fastboot, you'll be able to write to the boot partition, so all you need to do is flash the rom and it should work. With that said, I've read a lot of times that flashing ics roms with s-on will cause bootloops. I've never seen that personally, I was s-off before ics came along.

You probably know this but ill say it just incase. You only flash gapps on aosp roms. I think all the ics gapps say ics in the name, and most of the time gapps for any rom are linked in the same thread as the rom.
Look at your pm in a little bit. I'm gonna send you some stuff that'll help you figure out how to correctly flash a phone so that you can s-off without worry. I can't really post it here.

Please Help

Search has failed me, I have a rezound that i rooted after unlocking the bootloader and using hansons toolkit..
What is the best way to get to stock so I can accept the ICS update and re root?
I am familiar with how to relock my bootloader..
Thank you all
PS I called verizon today because my rezound is a bit fishy with the charger wanting to replace it to under warranty , they no longer have them available and are shipping the Razr Maxx as a substitute...UGGGH.
Don't accept that Motorola garbage.... Less processor speed and terrible screen also less dev support. Oh and you don't need to get back to stock to get ics just flash the ics ota in bootloader

I've created a guide for rooted users to install the official ICS over-the-air: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tmlh4OnplVfBNSjSyXfTYIVGfyb9lgI6ABpfg7gHY44/edit
I'm also working on a guide to restore root after installing ICS. It's not too bad at all, it's just finding a simple guide that's the trick... For restoring root after ICS, you can see my response here, where I reference discussions where I asked the same questions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1829484

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you wouldn't do that for the over the air update.
You would need to flash stock recovery (assuming you've flashed a custom recovery), and then they can install the update through Android, like normal.
The guide i posted takes you through this process, as i did it.

Oh, and if you flashed Clockwork Mod, this is likely causing your charging problems. This is why i used AR Recovery 3.15 instead.
You can either take the OTA update or install an RUU.
Both ways, you have to relocked your bootloader or S-OFF.
For the OTA, you should be stock everything.
Stock recovery and rom.
For an RUU, just make sure you are on a rom that matches your firmware.
Gingerbread ROM on Gingerbread firmware.

For the OTA, you need to be stock everything or it won't install. This is why I included instructions on how to revert back to stock recovery before trying the OTA.
You do not need to re-lock your hboot if you have S-OFF. What happens is that the OTA update re-locks the bootloader and you have to unlock it again if you want to play with your device (like, re-install AR Recovery). Or, if you have S-Off, you can install a different hboot that's already unlocked, and then you can flash custom recoveries, etc. But since messing with the hboot is very risky, I chose to re-unlock my hboot the HTC way after installing the OTA.
*important edit*
The OTA may have worked for me with an unlocked hboot because I was S-Off prior to updating. If you're not S-Off, you may indeed need to re-lock before updating.
However, it may be just as easy to get S-Off. It's actually very easy. I will make a very easy guide for this as well. Let me know, and I can help you through it. I'm not an expert, but it doesn't take an expert. The hardest part for me was just finding a good, uncomplicated guide - doesn't seem to be one at the moment, though there is a ton of info out there.
Anyway, let me know if you want help getting S-Off.

you need to be unlocked if you want to flash recoveries. You should have flashed the stock recovery and then relocked. (if I'm understanding what you did)

Here is my new guide for S-OFF: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_kRxD5LtazP7vEnr9cDb3iHwWB1ZfJD_yn6xXo7d1bo/edit
It's really very easy - at least it was for me. Using the metronome audio file that I linked to, I was able to successfully complete the wire trick on my first try. It was cake when actually doing it.
Let me know if this helps.

Flashing a different recovery doesn't modify the rom.

Flashing a recovery won't affect root. The OTA will break root, but it's simple to restore. That's the easy part.
What I think you should do first is achieve S-OFF (you do not need to re-lock if you achieve S-OFF. It's easy, and it makes switching ROMs easier).
Then flash stock recovery.
Then accept OTA update(s).
Then unlock again (rather than mess with your bootloader).
Then flash superSU to restore root.
All per my instructions. I think they will make it easy as possible for you. The hardest thing, I think, is trying to find a step-by-step guide on all of this.
Just my opinion. There's a lot of info out there, but it's hard to sort through which steps you should choose to do, and when you should do them.

[Q] GB -> ICS Unlocked S-On

Hey guys, I have a HTC Amaze running Gingerbread....
I have CWM installed, with ***Unlocked*** PVT SHIP S-ON RL, and the H-Boot is 1.90.0004...
I'm wondering how I can install ICS/JB (step by step would be great, as I got confused reading the other threads)
^ Do I need to flash Stock? Is it possible to flash ICS/JB Without S-Off?

The bible linked in my signature has all information you need- this is a link that goes directly how to flash ICS firmware. https://docs.google.com/document/d/...a-E_iDtKBuAC9jc/edit#bookmark=id.d02ccdce695a
Also, use 4ext recovery, it is much better, and if you enable smartflash you can flash kernels without s-off. CWM has not been supported for a while and may have issues like not charging while the phone is off. There is a thread about 4ext in one of the forums if you do a search.
Lastly, I am pretty sure you have to relock your bootloader to flash the RUU as the instructions in the above link should show.

No, you have to upgrade to ics via a stock ruu, read that thread properly and not just skim through it.

K. Think I got this..
The steps::
From GB -> ICS
1. Flash Stock ICS RUU
2. Unlock Bootloader again through htcdev
3. Install CWM/4EXT
4. Flash Rom
right?
Do I need to relock the bootloader if I want to flash stock RUU?

You don't need to go back to htcdev to unlock the bootloader after update, the old unlock file works fine.
Is it okay to relock bootloader while on a custom rom?
I don't have the old file from HTCDev, so I need to go through the process again...
Thanks!
Btw, can I Flash kernel using hasoon2000 tool to flash kernel with S-ON?

Yes and yes, just make sure you have the stock ruu on your sd card renamed PH85IMG.

I have the same issue. I bought my wife's phone on eBay. It has GB 2.3.4 with a custom energy rom. I'm trying to find the easiest way to upgrade to ICS via OTA. My thought is to go back to stock ruu and use T-Mobile's OTA upgrade. T-Mobile's Amaze 4G
Hboot says:
***UNLOCKED***
RUBY PVT SHIP S-ON RL
eMMC-boot
I've spent days and hours reading threads after threads. After learning all the terms, I'm ready to try something but I'm scared of bricking the phone.
Can you give me step-by-step instructions on exactly what you did? I think I should go with hasoon2000 toolkit. The phone does not have a stock recovery. The recovery is by Team version 2.0.0. I'm guessing this is what I need to do:
Using hasoon2000 toolkit:
1. go back to stock recovery. Is this necessary?
2. relock bootloader. Can I do this with the toolkit?
3. flash stock GB ruu (or is it the same to flash stock ICS ruu here?)
Since this is my wife's phone, she doesn't really care about custom roms. Do I need to:
3. Unlock Bootloader again through htcdev
4. Install 4EXT
5. Superwipe/Wipe
6. Flash Rom
Is the toolkit the best method or can I simply have the ruu on my SD card and run it through Hboot?
Any advise or tips will be greatly appreciated.
