just find a cfroot kernel that matches ur phone and flash the same thro' odin u will have root access after that u get a yellow triangle at boot if u want 2 get rid of it then reflash the stock kernel u still have root access so that u can install apps like Titanium bkp. root explorer etc which require root access
please follow the link below for cf-root kernels
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
ps before doing anything make a bkp of ur current rom and read the faq in the link above carefully before flashing anything from the same

you can flash a cf root kernel and keep your stock rom, see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399

just for root you can try this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 (up to LP7 it is confirmed working, no problem to try on LP8, read the thread for more information)
Root with CWM : CF-root link is on my signature (recommended)

Thanks for that, but where do i find these cfroot kernals?

No problems or insecure kernels. I've got the exact same firmware as you and it worked perfectly for me.

Please ask Chainfire in his CF-Root thread (you have got the link already) for such a version ...
or flash a newer ROM via Odin (like described in Intratech's thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) - for which there is a corresponding CF-Root kernel available.
There is a way to CWM, but you have to go for it

Glad we can help.Better than screwing your phone thats for sure.If your gonna keep on flashing firmwares or ROMs then i recommend you download Titanium Back-up from the market. It backs-up and restores all your apps + data and links them back to the market so you dont loose anything or keep having to re-download stuff again and again.Handy if you have paid apps or games and dont want to loose data
EDIT: I imagine when you flashed the new firmware you kernel changed so you could root,no?!

Instructions from the root post.
CWM Manager
Because of incompatibility with ROM Manager,
I wrote and included "CWM Manager". This is a new app (as of March 30, 2011). You can find it under Applications -> CWM. It is much faster to use than manually booting into CWM and selecting these options.

You can root without the need to insecure kernel. The method is available in the root guide in the official firmware thread in the dev forum.
If you want to use an insecure kernel then you can use anyone of them, doesn't need to match your current firmware... just chose the latest one.

Root Advice - Little help needed

First, I apologize for starting a new thread on this subject.:fingers-crossed:
I just bought my Galaxy S II and I wanna root it,but I'm a little unsure about the whole process.
I also got a VYL00M emmc chip, which is vulnerable,but I'm on 4.0.3 i9100BVLPB.
Here are my thoughts and my questions :
If I flash via ODIN the coresponding CF-root kernel.
But then do I need to flash Syiah kernel through the CWM that comes with CF kernel so I can safely wipe and avoid brickbug?
I hope someone can provide a little aditional information and guide me through the process:angel:
Cheers

ICS 4.0.3 firmware is not affected by the brick bug.
However, you still need to post your ROM and kernel details. Goto Settings - About phone, and post everything you see

Like i said earlier, you are safe from the brick bug because you are running 4.0.3 firmware.
The brick bug only affects 4.0.4 firmware.
2.
To ROOT your device only, you don't need to flash any kernel.

Hi
I have the same phone details as the OP. a UK T-mobile running ICS 4.0.3 i9100 BVLPD
I rooted my phone the other day by the simple method in link above... BUT isn't this method of rooting limited ?
I would like to root my phone fully using an insecure kernel & Odin but i dont know where to get the correct kernel for my phone, i need an insecure & original secure kernel to do this right ?
Sorry for my nuwbness questions.

What are you talking about "limited" and "fully".Its either rooted or it aint.
That method doesnt give you CWM,if thats what you mean. You can just flash a custom kernel that contains CWM if you want.
Isn't exynos abuse the faster way to get rooted?

But now you've confused me a lil more, the thread (also in ur sig) says it does have CWM
Rooting
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip

Cool, I made a back up in what i think is CWM and it put a 1.4GB folder on my sd-card.
Am i right in thinking i could mess up my phone, reset it or delete progs & mess with setting ...THEN as long as i can boot to recovery & CMW & load the back up it would return it back to how it is now ?
Peace
That is temporary cwm-not permanent. If you rebooted after flashing the 2 files......it launches stock recovery.
Anyway when your rooted/got permanent cwm you should be backing up your efs and doing a nand backup.
Then start pissing about with roms.

Thx theunderling
I see now... so i DO need to get permanent CWM ? I'd need to flash an insecure kernel for that right (i have one ready)
Dont yet know what efs is (ill read up on it) and nand back up ? i just been doing a lil reading on that and thought the back up i'd done is the same thing, they were calling it Nandroid back up, is that different ?
Peace
Just flash Siyah kernel in ODIN and then you will have root and CWM. Its that simple. No need for anything else at all.
I dont understand why we always have all this crap and unnecessary files/steps etc.
Connect phone to PC.
Reboot phone into download mode.
Load up ODIN.
Flash Siyah kernel.
Thats its, Once done you will have new kernel, cwm recovery, rooted system, SU, and also CWM app installed.
If you want new rom simply reboot into stock, wipe data and flash rom you want, You dont have to worry about cwm again as all custom kernels come with recovery.
Yeah I missed your other post saying you had done the nand backup as I was in the middle of writing my reply when you posted yours.

Little help please

Could do with a little advise. I have rooted in the past, most recently my HTC desire. I used to flash roms all the time.
Anyway I have decided to root my s2 and I am having problems. I root view odien and everything goes fine but when it reboots everything is the same and have no root access? any ideas?
If it helps I did the manual ics update a while back, don't know if that has anything to do with it?
Thanks

You're not really explaining the steps you took to root. Flashing a CF-Root kernel through Odin would usually do the job if you want to maintain stock ROM. Otherwise, flashing a custom ROM would also give you root access as most ROMs come with it built in.
I strongly suggest you explain further what steps you took to flash. Because root view odien doesn't say much and is quite confusing.

You should know by now to post the details about your phone.
I could say flash siyah-s2-v4.1.5 via odin(which gives root/perm cwm and safe kernel).
But I wont til you post the details.....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
It has always been my preference to root through a custom kernel... If you do decide to go this way, download siyah v4.1.5 and flash it through the PDA section of odin.
Also, as theunderling said, please post your phone details before flashing.
Flashing this kernel will grant you root + permanent CWM

Do as theunderling and poroto mentioned. Download the TAR version of siyah v4.1.5 from www.gokhanmoral.com and install it via Odin the same way as mentioned in the tutorial link you posted. (Instead of cf-root, use siyah) Do this and you will have root. Then you can flash a custom ROM.

If you want to upgrade to 4.0.4 I recommend to flash a stock 4.0.4 via odin then Cf-root (or other prerooted) kernel to have root, custom CWM recovery and be safe from brick bug. Then flash desired custom rom. Yes, custom roms come usually with root.

Do as theunderling and poroto mentioned. Download the TAR version of siyah v4.1.5 from www.gokhanmoral.com and install it via Odin the same way as mentioned in the tutorial link you posted. (Instead of cf-root, use siyah) Do this and you will have root. Then you can flash a custom ROM.
good luck.

I haven't mate. I downloaded root checker and it says I don't have it.
No you don't. Flash the TAR ( NOT zip.) version of siyah or dorimanx kernel via Odin. You don't need CWM for this. Once you install one of these custom kernels you will have root and CWM and can then install a ROM and whatever else you want via CWM.

Ok thanks mate.
It won't let me download the tar?
Sorted it going to flash the resurrection remix ROM. Says on galaxys2 root.com that its probably the best ROM you can run on this phone. Is this true?

Everything depends on what you expect from a rom. If you look at a picture in my sig you notice that I expect someting different.

Theunderling is not so much patient for new members
It happens everytime you flash custom software to your phone via PC odin.
Use Triangle Away app from Google Play store to remove it. However read carefully the app instructions before you use it.

OK thanks everyone for your help.

Thank you,I tried that method but when I started cw in recovery mode, it didn't let me choose any option because the screen was blinking... Very strange I know... I'm going to the method in your signature and I'll tell you...thank you!
I rooted using rachmat3 way very easy guide
Perhaps I didnt download the suitable version of Clockwork, in their web I can see "download recovery" and "download touch recovery" (I took this one), but what is the difference between both? With the "touch" type (5.8.1.5) is with the one i got that screen-blinking problem...
Thank you
Download the 1st and 3rd links and use them.
The 1st link is temp cwm which lets you flash the file in the 3rd link.
Once i had reached this, could I install any custom ROM?

What I dont understand is why I need files in sammobile when first method doesnt ask for these files anytime... you mean this? (please see attached pic)
Its the 1st and 3rd links in the ics rooting guide by Rachmat....not the 1st and 3rd links in my sig.
Ive had problems in the past using touch recovery, but it should still work.
There are other methods to root if you prefer them, one being flashing a rooted kernel via Odin.
Ok, Im gonna try!
YEAHHHHHHHH! Once it's done, I consider myself an idiot...! Thank you everybody!!! hehehehehe... and now... and almost ending my asks, where can I find info for flashing a ROM?
Thank you so much...
Hey,first use hktool to backup your efs then make a nand backup in cwm.
Then look into custom roms. Also make sure you install Odin in case you need to get out of trouble.
