Can't read SD cards from dock - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello everyone,
I noticed that after last update, my dock doesn't detect any SD card I place in and this is quite scaring me, since I don't really want to send the dock back to ASUS... do you think a full wipe could make this fix?
I tried with a Cl.10 16GB SD by Samsung and a Mediacom 4GB (don't know the class) but my tablet just says that available space is 0,0 GB and it can't unmount the card...
What do you think about it?
Tiwiz

I have sent my dock in twice for an RMA because both my USB and SD card are not detected by my Prime. Sent back twice and I still can't see anything plugged into these ports.
Just did a factory reset on my Prime and still no luck. I guess another RMA and see if I can send both dock and tablet in together to let them see that the ports are not being detected?

Coincidentally, yesterday I tried to read a micro SD card via an adapter card on the dock to copy some music onto the micro SD card in my tablet. It shows the card in ES File Explorer or the Asus File Manager, but when you browse, it displays an empty card?!? Hopefully its a driver issue, rather than a hardware fault...

After reading the posts I thought I'd try my keyboard dock ports and I plugged in a 160gb hard drive to the USB. It took a few seconds to read it and then I could open it from the status bar or the stock file manager. Was pretty easy.
I plugged in my Atrix phone and that doesn't do anything. Thought maybe it might charge or something. Didn't try the SD slot.
I think you're going to have to do the dreaded RMA and I wish you luck for a speedy turnaround.

same here. after reading this thread i decided to test out my dock sd card slot. it works perfectly. i can find the card in asus file manager and i can find it using 3rd. party file explorers also, like astro.

I actually just tried out the SD card slot on my dock last night for the first time. The first time it detected the card immediately. It showed two of the SD card icons (one in the tab, one in the dock.) After I took the card out of the dock, put some other files on it and plugged it back in, it didn't recognize it. I tried searching for it with ES explorer and it wasn't there. When I ejected it, ES prompted me that the card was empty...... weird. I then plugged the card into the tablet and it worked fine. Plugged that same card back into the dock, but was not prompted that it was being prepared, but all of my file explorers showed it there. Now, I no longer have the two icons in the tray. It only shows one when I have two cards plugged in. Veeeerrrryyyyy glitchy

and just like that, i once again am showing both sd card icons in the tray. i didnt even do anything. just appeared while i was reading other posts.
the prime is reading my mind.....

Aye, it's very temperamental. But it does work, for me.

jsjames - I have had this exact problem. I have also sent my dock in twice, and it still does not work. And I've tried the factory reset. Did you end up sending in your dock and tablet together? Did it work?

Yes, I sent both in and I got them back about 20 days later working again. Not sure what they did, but the card readers work again.
However, the glass on my tablet is popping up a little bit on the right side. Not sure if they did it or it's just the tablet. I just keep pushing it down and it sticks for a while. Must be double sided tape under it?

[Q] usb thumbdrive not mounting

My first post, but I've been reading in this forum for two months, a couple hours each day. It's habit forming.
Gtab, tnt lite v.4.1.0
I have a USB adapter made by Sigg that has a 16gig microSD inserted. Formatted (several times) FAT32. When inserted in the gtab USB host slot the disk is not mounted without a lot of plugging and unplugging and praying to the gods. There have been a few messages telling me that the 'card is damaged' when it is not. The microSD card works fine when inserted in the gtab's microSD slot. But it can take hours of fiddling to get the card to mount in the USB slot.
After lots of searching it seems that everyone else takes USB flash drives on the gtab for granted. They all seem to work. Mine doesn't, but works fine in my XPpro 32bit laptop.
If anyone can give me some ideas for troubleshooting this I'd appreciate it.
By the way, this forum is something of a phenomenon. After looking at the gtab threads I went out and bought mine at Sears. What better way to get acquainted with Android? My thanks go out to everyone here who has contributed. Someday I might be able to contribute as well.
I think about ways to better manage the gtablet xda forum, a lot. It has become a monster - but it's not a bad monster, more like a cute and cuddly Sesame Street monster.
How to organize all this fabulous information so that it can be easily searched and utilized? Good question.
All I can say is - keep up the good work. This forum is a fantastic resource.
Thanks all
Two thoughts:
First: I'd change the title. This isn't a thumbdrive issue, really, so much as a USB SD Reader problem.
Second: I've run into similar issues myself. But I've noticed that I have a couple odd ball readers tht don't work on Mac but does work on Windows. This may be a driver issue. My suggestion would be to try another SD card reader and see if that makes a difference.
I also have a USB adapter with a micro SD inside of it. I find that it does not mount on bootup, but it mounts fine if I remove it and re-insert it.
I was wondering if there is an app for sending a software command to mount the USB. I have looked, but have not found.
smalis, my question exactly!
Taking aaltieri's reply into consideration I experimented with a plain-jane thumbdrive, an adapter with a standard SD, and my adapter with the microSd. Others have demonstrated that adapters with more than one slot will not work. Both my adapters have one slot only.
So here's the intriguing results: The plain-jane thumbdrive is just as unreadable as both adapters UNLESS you boot the machine with the adapter/thumbdrive in the slot, then remove it and put it back in. Then they all read after a short detection period. BUT once the drives are removed after detection they cannot be read again until the machine is shut down and rebooted with the drive in, then remove it and put it back in for detection.
What we need is a method for mounting and unmounting USB drives. I've searched and cannot find a way to unmount the drive under tnt lite. It does not show up in settings/storage like the sd cards do.
By the way, the little Sigg adapter is very tiny, sticking out only 1/4" from the side of the gtab. I got it at Fry's Electronics for $6. I leave it in the slot full-time and it helps keep the power button from being activated when the gtab's inside it's sleeve. I use a Belkin 'non-slip' netbook sleeve (also at Fry's) and the gtab fits only slightly loose. I use a couple of ultrathin mouse pads/screen protectors, one on each side, to increase padding. The Belkin sleeve is difficult to drop due to the grippy sides. The ultrathin mouse pads are marketed for netbook use, to put under the lcd when closing the lid to protect the screen (also Fry's Electronics - what can I say, I'm hooked on the place).
The idea I had was to have 16gig in the SD slot and 16gig in the USB slot. The 32gig microSDHC's are cost prohibitive for me right now. And I still have 11gig remaining on the internal memory. I'd better get to work filling it . . .
Yeah, I have one of those tiny USB micro-SD adapters also (elago Mobile Nano II USB 2.0 microSDHC Flash Memory Card Reader from Amazon), and am very happy with its small footprint.
I had same idea as you - I have a Wintec 16 GB Class 10 MicroSD (~$30 on Newegg) in the SD slot and another one in the USB slot.
However, I have no problem reading the USB slot after unplugging and plugging it in once, or multiple times.
The only time I cannot read it is when I boot with it in. Then, I have to unplug it and plug it in once.
Yours seems more flaky.
Just wanted to note that I had similar issues reading the contents of a FAT32 formatted thumbdrive when using the default iFileManager on Vegan. I downloaded the File Manager app by Adao Team on the market and I can read the thumbdrive contents just fine when using that app.
A follow up for anyone interested.
I migrated to vegantab 5.1 to get mouse and keyboard functionality. I also loaded the small update to 5.1 that has sniffer included.
I don't think sniffer is much to write home about, but it does mount all the usb 2.0 drives and even all the multi-adapters that I've thrown at it. Some posts have pointed out that the multi-adapters don't work. But they do, at least in my experience. I used a Sony adapter that has sd, micro-sd, sony's memory stick, compact flash, and some other port. My 16gig compact flash cards from my camera are read without a problem AFTER opening sniffer. The iFile manager that comes with vegantab does not see the usb 2.0 or the adapter until sniffer is opened. Then the system sees the drives with no problem.
It works every time.
I decided to use an HP wireless mini keyboard. It's a perfect match for the gtab. I thought about dropping $80 for the new Verbatim folding bluetooth keyboard but the HP allows for much better touch typing and I need to do that. Best Buy has a cd/dcd carrying case made by Init that is essentially a hard case that fits the HP keyboard perfectly one the cd sleeves are removed. There's room under the keyboard for headphones, flash memory, and other odds and ends. With vegatab and the mouse fix, the keyboard is easily detected and the mouse pointer works great.
Anyway, it looks as if the mounting issue is one that can easily be taken care of with an app. Another more recent poster on this issue has noted that changing file managers allowed him to mount usb drives that iFileManager would not see. But sniffer works and it's there for seperate download if anyone wants it. I think it looks like crap and doesn't do much. I'll use it in the meantime, though.

I didn't even think of Sniffer. I have a cheapo USB reader that was intermittently working (1 out of 60?). After your suggesting, if I open sniffer then plug it in, it sees it every time.
Folks,
I don't know that there is an answer I have seen to all your questions/observations.
I will say:
1. microSD post and USB on the tablet are not plug and play like Windows.
2. When I change my USB key or microSD, I always shut down and likewise I
always shut down before removing them.
3. Yes, I know that's a pain if you change a lot, but for me it makes sure
Android's flicted OS searches for, finds them, and in turn properly shuts them
down before I remove them.
For me, in and out as need just doesn't work.

EDIT: P. S. -- You all seemed like sharp guys. Should I have asked if you
are looking for the files under /USBdisk?
In my experience, thumb drive mounting is hit and miss. Maybe it's just the drives that I'm using, but it's unreliable. Also, with Gingerbread and Pershoot's kernels, he references having to revert something in order to get USB mount to work (thinking about it, that might refer to mounting the tab to a computer). I would suggest getting used to unmounting your external micro card in Android and growing out a fingernail or two so you can pop that sucker out. I think this is a low priority to the devs, and maybe it should be.

[Q] SD card not being recognized

Hey all,
So i go to check for a file on my sd card today and i noticed that the phone can't find it. I double check that it is snuggly plugged in, but nothing shows up. I placed the sd card in my old captivate and that reads it fine.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Matt
EDIT** it seems that no sd card is being recognized by the phone, almost like its turned off?
An issue with the phones SD card connectors has been reported here in a couple of the SD card threads. The fix is to turn off the phone, remove the SD card, and using a pin or tiny screw driver carefully bend the two connectors that normally press up against the contacts on the SD card. Just don't bend them too much. Put the SD cardback, in power up the phone and you should be good.
Thanks for the reply, i got the phone off and the sd card out and i'm trying to look at the connectors but with the metal strip that holds the sd card on, its hard to see the connectors / get to them. Any tips on that?
EDIT** well i thought i broke it haha, but it's actually working now
Thanks =)

Dock USB problems

i just received my dock today and plugged in my USB flash drive and found out that it did not work. There was no power going to the flash drive at all. As soon as/ plugged in the keyboard, I downloaded two firmware updates and there was still no USB power. Anyone have this problem? i also rebooted after the update.

same here, my sandisk cruzer doesn't work with the dock either. as soon as i plug it in, i get a short "preparing usb device" notification, but it immediately disappears and then nothing happens.
the drive must be powered though as it lights up. usb hard disks with their own power supply get recognized without a problem..
i found out that it work if i reboot my tablet with the usb plugged in. it works but that is very inconvenient.

Same problem with my sandisk cruzer. Tried to plug it in an usb hub and it worked instantly. Maybe sandisk related problem. Reboot also worked for me.

I had the same problem with my kindle and solved it by rebooting it with the kindle connected to it...
Hope they fix it... It's a big annoyance to have to reboot the tablet to get the USB working....

same issue here
however better workaround than rebooting , go into settings storage and under
usbdisk1 there should be an option to mount external storage..
That worked for me , still annoying we have to do this but better than rebooting..
well it sorta works , after i mounted and checked i could access files i came down and made this post , after that i went back to the tablet and screen had turned off , on resume it had unmounted it so had to mount it again..
I had no problem with Patriot 32gb Rage XT.
I have a 16gb sandisk cruzer "blade", and it works fine... I plug it in, it "prepares" the external storage, and then mounts it ready for use.
So, it seems it depends on the flash drive... I have a few various thumb drives kicking around, I'll give them each a whirl and report back.
I had the same problem when i got mine in!
when i saw the "mount external storage" i facepalmed, literally.(OF COURSE IT ISNT WORKING ITS NOT MOUNTED -__-)
its not the usb not working people, its the external storage not auto mounting.
any app that can do this ?
just got my sandisk cruzer working, sandisk isnt the problem, auto mounting is

When connecting my Note 2, to the PC I cannot transfer files. Please help.

About 3 months, I had some issues connecting my i605, rooted, running Jelly Beans Build 13 ROM to my PC (windows 8). It started with not being able to detect the phone at all, it then evolved into spotty charging, and the phone randomly going into "car mode" because from what I could tell, it thought it was docked. So I figured this was due to a faulty charging port, so I took it to a renowned shop and got the port replaced. Prior to getting it replaced charging got better and car mode (which was incredibly annoying because it caused many stutters and force closes from constantly turning on and off in quick succession) pretty much disappeared completely except for once. Since getting it repaired, charging has improved, and car mode has yet to appear, however it will not transfer files still. The PC is 50/50 with recognizing the device at all. Sometimes it will show up under "My computer" sometimes not. When it DOES I can explore the SD card (sandisk 64gb class 10) fine, and the phone onboard memory, but when I try transferring TO the phone I get an error that says, "The device is not responsive, or has been disconnected". Now when transferring from the card to my pc I get another error, but that error is also 50/50. I just tried it and can transfer from the card to my desktop fine, but not vice versa EVER. Anyone have similar issues or even better, a solution?
EDIT: I tried changing the ROM's extension to just .file and it moved over fine. This leads me to believe it for what ever reason just will not transfer .zips(seeing as that's all I've tried transferring, and .file worked fine).

You say Car Mode still hasn't started up since having it replaced? Could it be an issue with the replacement? I have replaced ports on plenty on phones, doing it myself not taking it to shops, and have never had this issue but it could be they didn't do a good job, didnt use enough solder to fill the PCB holes, and it isnt making contact the entire time.
It may also be a driver issue but to me it sounds like maybe the replacement isnt a quality replacement, maybe he didn't use enough or used to much solder, or there is another underlying problem with your phones MoBo that is causing this.

No, not having car mode is a GOOD thing. Car mode was giving me hell. It'd randomly at anytime just start turning on and off rapidly. The only remaining issue is the transferring of .zip files.

Have you tried troubleshooting this issue using just the micro sd card in a card reader?
It could be that windows 8 hasn't the proper drivers to interface with the phone.
Also, a cheap workaround could be to transfer the zip files to a flash drive and
use an otg cable to connect flash drive to the phone for transfer there. If the zips transfer that way I would suspect
the windows 8 pc samsung drivers to be the culprit. After considering all the facts, though, you might want to return your phone for a port repair again. My curiosity got the better of me. Does it charge with the factory wall charger with no interrupts?

You mean put the micro SD into an adapter to make it a regular SD card and then try that? If that's what you're talking about I've tried that too, for what ever reason that card (64gb sandisk class 10) is read only. I can't write to that card. Maybe its the formatting or something but if I recall right I researched why I couldn't write to it months ago, and though it's very fuzzy I feel like my research amounted to: "you're **** out of luck". Trying with an OTG might work, but I'd have to get an OTG cable first. Thing is it USED to transfer .zips. That's how I rooted and placed ROMs on my phone. It's only recently after all this charging port problems that transferring became an issue. I thought it was simply because the port became loose and the "connectors" (excuse my lack of hardware-speak) were touching and then jiggling during charging or unplugging the phone or whatever caused the port to lose connection with the rest of the phone. So I blamed a defective port for all my issues and decided to replace it. Now since it's been replaced all past issues are gone, except this transfer issue. And to answer your final question, it did not prior to the repair, it does now from what I've seen.

Magicsee N6 Plus, Boot loop... (update)

I hope this is the right place I joined the forum a long time ago for help with an old Android phone hopefully I can find some help with this here too.
I bought this about a year ago:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085H9H57Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I used an SD card with Emuelec on it had a bit of fun with some retro games and android games, and installed some software to watch videos with it. I used it for about 3 or 4 months then set it aside to focus on other things. Cut to around the beginning of the year I get a new Samsung 4kTV and wanted to hook all my stuff up to it. When I connected this and plugged it in I got stuck in a boot loop. It worked just fine up until the last time I used it and now the boot screen starts discolored for a couple of seconds then changes to its normal color, tries to load for about a minute and then resets. Even with my Emuelec SD card in, it tries to boot, runs through some of the file installation for what looks like the first boot and then resets.
I download the tools to make the stock firmware SD card to reinstall and it seemed to go through the whole process just fine without rebooting, but when I eject the card and restart the device the same thing happens. I have the one program that's supposed to let you connect to the deice through USB to installed the firmware again but it doesn't appear to be recognized by the software (it's likely the cable I'm using isn't a USB2 rated cable or maybe I didn't install the drivers properly) I've tried a couple of different adaptors because some people say maybe the adaptor is junk but I don't have many options with barrel connectors that even fit. I've seen people talk about shorting connections to break a loop, but I'm not an electrician and don't know the first thing about that, That being said I did try to open it an I can see the bottom of the board but I'm not sure how to even get it out of the rest of it's plastic case without breaking something (I think I need a small wrench to disconnect the port for the pointless external antenna.)
Anyone think there's any saving this or should I just call it a loss and move on?
(Update!)
I continued to search for solutions in the meantime after posting this and eventually bought a new adaptor. Without clear information I assumed the adaptor wasn't the issue, but I eventually just on a whim I tried another adaptor I ran across in my pile of electronics that caused the device to suddenly power on and escape the boot loop. Despite fitting the plug perfectly the adaptor I was using doesn't have very legible writing so the actual output can't be read, but this new adaptor seems to be a 12v which seems out of the ordinary to me but what ever it's original use it appears I'll be using it for this case. I'm glad I didn't seem to do any damage to it while searching for a fix (other than the reformat that cleared out my apps). My thanks to anyone that took the time to read this even if you had no advice.
