[Q] CWM Freezing on Backup - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hey guys. Recently I've started having a problem during CWM backups. Up until recently a backup to internal SD would take 4-5 min. However, now the backups keep freezing about 2 minutes in on some cryptic file "-118283183281."
This happens every time and I'm no longer able to make backups. It happens regardless of whether I'm backing up to the internal or external SD. Any ideas?

Are you on ShoStock 2.2? Nandroid backups don't work yet.

Try changing to a different kernel. I had the problem with SHOstock2 with the cherrypicker kernel switched to DAFUQ and no more nandroid problems.

Yeah, I am running Shostock 2.2. Didn't know about the nandroid problem. Thanks!

bad file?
I was thinking maybe it was a bad file.

I don't know if you got today's update (2.2.2) but I just tried to Nandroid backup and it apparently works now. That's with the Cherry Picker kernel. FWIW.

If we are all here comfortable voiding our warranties and modifying our phones, let's try being just as bold when fixing issues like this. Remember the simplest answer is sometimes and usually the best. Be pioneers.

SD Card and Roms! [HELP!]

Can anyone tell me why Cynogenmod, MIUI, and Vanilla Gingerbread all have problems reading my SD card? I REALLY want Vanilla Gingerbread but it won't read my card like the others. It flashes but keeps saying "SD damaged." It won't let me use it. I reboot, do a battery pull, and do a hard reset but nothing works! It works fine on my PC. It works fine on Evil Fascination and Community Rom! I hate stock! Any help is appreciated! I've only been an Android user for 2 months now and still learning!
No offense dude but do a search.

It's a known issue that has been popping up with the latest vanilla gb and CM7 roms. It is not an issue with the v2 rom of VGB or earlier.
nobody really knows for sure. I would just stay away from those roms until it gets figured out...atleast I am.
Has anyone tried v 2 of jt's kernel? He claims that it helps with the SD card issue

Mine just started doing it within 7 hours of flashing vanilla. Miui had no problems.

Well, I bypassed the SD card errors. Now it was getting gapps to flash. I just gave up and went back to stock. Also, for some reason, my Nandroid backups won't work. It says it has an error restoring system. I'm sick of using titanium bu just to get my apps back. Ill continue to try different things if Nandroid would just work. Anyone know why it doesn't work?

A nandroid backup is done thru cwm (the only place I know of) when you boot into recovery (like if your flashing a rom) you'll see a section that saids "backup" that is where you conduct your nandroid backup up...once you create the back up you can restore using that backup from cwm as well. The backup pretty much copies everything on your phone, from system files to music...this is in my oppinion very important to do especially if your planning on going flash crazy like most of us. So to answer your question about switching, to the best of my knowledge if you created a backup while on GB and created a backup while on ICS than stands to reason you could toggle...but I will tell you that the restore process does take a while, after a few of them you'll be sick of it and I'm not quite sure why you'd want to toggle. I created a backup of GB when the ICS leak first came out just in case there were a lot of issues, I've experienced very few problems while running IcS so I have zero reason to ever go back to GB.

Not really... Get almost the same use with ics. Not enough difference to go back to GB.

Plunge Taken

After a couple months lurking, I finally took the plunge an rooted and installed a custom ROM.
I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223
with a little help from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483113
for basic knowledge/reference.
with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664980
for my ROM.
Just wanted to give gordec & appdroid my thanks for collecting all the nesessary info in one (or two) places for us noobs, and Flapjaxxx for providing such an awesome ROM!
Congradulations for taking your time and doing it right. Now you can never go back!

+1 Welcome to the custom world...you'll never look at your device the same way again. Wait till you see a stock device in the wild, lol.
Flashing is kinda like a getting a Tattoo once you start you always want another one LOL
Yeah, now that you've started, every time you see a friend's stock phone you'll get irritated and want to do stuff.

Fyi don't do work on friends phones. If they want to flash a rom you can teach em but make it their responsibility, not yours.

Totally agree, I was just saying how I always want to mess with other phones.

Flashing a ROM is like having sex.
The first time it's scary and you're apprehensive, there are so many positions (tools) and objectives (methods), and so much you want to get right...and then you realize, hey, it's all about what feels natural (once you get through the process, everything makes sense)...or unnatural...in a good way.
Then, your 2nd and third time are nearly as fun as the first, and after a while, it become second nature.
It's also like sex in another way...because if you don't use protection (a nandroid & titanium backup) your bound to have an "accident" (lose your data, or worse, brick your phone) and end up with a mini-you, or some tropical disease.
Epic analogy.
+10 analogy!

So, question
I never really found a good resource for explaining this, so to test some assumptions:
I made a nandroid backup of my rooted gingerbread. If I restore from backup (not that I intend to) all will magically go back to that state, right? But nandroid just backs up the system, apps would need to be put back. Settings for apps fixed, etc.
But titanium backup does all your apps and setting, so they best work in concert. ie: restore your nandroid, restore your Ti backup, everything is the the same.
And a minor question: Can you rename backup files without screwing stuff up? Or at least their containing folder? Can I name it "Rooted Stock 6_14"?

nandroid backups DO include your apps, settings, and data at the time of the backup, so there is no need to restore anything separately or fix the settings -- unless the app or settings were added or changed AFTER you made the backup, of course
And yes, you can rename CWM backups.

Assuming your .zip flashed files didn't contain a boot loader, the Nandroid is just about as good as it gets.
I've renamed folders, but not the file itself. I normally do this after each backup because my mind goes full retard after looking at the auto generated Nandroid naming schemes.
Changing nandroid name will result in md5 checksum error.

I hope the OP did some Nandroid backup, because often time depend on the roms, my phone would do this. Always remember to do Nandroid backup once in a while. Personally I backup every Sunday, but then again I am just paranoid

[Q]Backing up/Restoring

Hey all!
I've been messing around with a few ROMs, and hear several people talk about backing up and restoring. From the sounds of it, they do a much better/faster job than I can. So I was wondering if there was a listing of what apps and practices that people use for backing up and restoring. If there isn't, would anyone be averse if I started something along those lines?
Currently I am using Helium, and I have used Titanium Backup before.

I think a "Noob guide on backing up/restoring" would be a good thread to have, so I say go for it. Especially for Titanium as I'm pretty sure I'm not using it to it's fullest potential. The more knowledge out there for those starting off, the better.
For what it's worth, the only backing up I do is a Nandroid with TWRP and then Titanium.
Awesome! I'll give it a few more days (mainly because I'm at dragon con), and we'll see then!
So, when you restore from a clean wipe, do you restore from nandroid, or do you use another app to extract from the nandroid?

The nandroid can be restored (it wiped before restoring anyways) or if you just want your apps, skip the nandrpid and use something like Titanium Backup or whatever app of your choice.
Tapatalked from my HTC DNA - Carbon
Also, I forgot to mention that I occasionally use Nandroid Manager, which is very cool. Instead of restoring the full nandroid, you can choose individual parts of your nandroids to restore.
