Dropped my Thunderbolt at the bar last night and, unfortunately, the screen cracked =(.
Where would be the best place to buy some new glass? Does something like iFixit exist for non-Apple devices =P? Also, on a side note, from a previous accident I had with my phone almost a year ago, the backlight for back and search dedicated buttons died. While I have my phone apart, is there an easy way to replace those, or are they attached to something larger? In the mean time, I'll keep using "keyboard backlight" to keep them always disabled =/
You can buy a new screen from amazon. There are repair videos on YouTube that are pretty easy to follow too. The backlights for the capacitive buttons I'm not sure about.

Just a tip, I fix phones for a living and it is incredibly difficult to remove the LCD without breaking it, I would highly recommended buying the LCD and digitizer together. Use repairs universe or wholesalegadgetparts.com, I've had great experiences with both.
I can see where you are coming from but all of the replacements I saw were both in one piece.

Just a quick update for future reference:
I bought a digitizer ONLY from Repair Universe (RU) originally, but after reviewing the take apart guides/videos for the Thunderbolt, I figured it'd be smarter and easier to buy the LCD + Digitizer pre-assembled. So I returned my digitizer to RU.
RU didn't have the LCD+Digi combo, so I checked wholesalegadgetparts.com (WSGP) per brandogg's suggestion. They not only had the combo, but they had the digitizer MUCH cheaper than RU, keep that in mind if you're buying from the two.
The only problem was WSGP had the LCD+Digi on back-order until mid-May, and I didn't want to to wait. So I got onto eBay and bought the LCD+Digi from a high-ranked seller that a personal friend had purchased iPhone LCD's from before.
Received the eBay screen and an hour later, I have a fix Thunderbolt! It actually feels like a new phone since there are no tiny scratches or nicks on the screen! Not to mention cleaning out all the dust/dirt/grossness from the inside made my proximity sensor function correctly, huzzuh!

I realize the original poster has resolved his issue, but I'm posting this just as a reference for others.
My lovely wife has cracked her screen to the point it needed to be replaced twice in the last year. First time I paid $100 (including parts) to have a local place do it. The person did a poor job, claimed it was a difficult repair, and the sensitivity was wrong. When she cracked it a second time I fixed it myself using a screen from http://www.directfix.com/ and used this youtube video. I found it fairly easy and replaced it in about an hour taking my time. After my repair, it works fine although I did have to clean out some dust once (not as well sealed as factory obviously). I believe the screen, plastic pry tool, and small screw drivers was around $64 including tax & shipping. I have no connection to the company that I purchased the screen and tools from(just stumbled on them via google), but I am happy with their service.
I am an engineer and do have a little experience taking apart other electronics, but I am by no means particularly good at it. It's definitely doable by anyone with the patience, and I had no trouble replacing just the screen and not the LCD. It may have been a bit easier for me as it was the second time the phone was taken apart.
I've made Gorilla Glass a requirement for my wife's next phone...
It was definitely easier since the screen had already been replaced and the replacement LCD did not have the same adhesive that the original would have had...and the Thunderbolt does have Gorilla Glass.
Also, gorilla glass is made for scratch protection not impacts.

Basically why I said do it yourself and the thunderbolt already has gorilla glass but you might want to consider a otter box for this device

So I dropped my Eris (which has been rock solid and no issues since I got it --mostly thanks to Kaos and all the developers for their hard work) and shattered the screen. An insurance replacement is nearly $100 for a refurbished Eris, and I am not yet ready for an upgrade. Even if I was, I am not happy with most of the phones out there given all the great phones coming out soon.
Has anyone repaired their Eris or done a tear down? I found a site to get replacement parts, and I can get the needed parts for about $50.
Advice/Suggestions anyone?
Its not hard as long as you take your time. YouTube has tutorial videos.
Check out eBay spare parts. I bought a for parts/repair Eris last summer for $40.
Splitting the case open was the hardest part. Didn't have the right tool. But I think some replacement kits come with a pry bar.
After its open, watch for the tiny ribbon connectors.

Awesome! I knew someone on here had experience with this. I really do not want to spend that much on a unknown refurbed phone, or waste my wife's early upgrade when there are no exciting phones out there and no deals to be had. The phone is shot, I am willing to "risk" $40 dollars or so to try (I am reactivating my Envy now to buy time).
I did find a website, but will check ebay out as well. I appreciate it.
That's how I felt when mine broke. Verizon wanted $170 at the time for a refurbished Eris. I figured I could buy 3or4 parts/repair units off eBay for that.
If you like to tinker, its not a bad project. It's already broken; either you fix it or break it more!

I just broke mine for the second time and got mine off eBay. It was $35 with free shipping and comes with a pry tool but you will need a small Philips and t5 or t6 driver. Some eBay digitizers come with the tools and prytool. Like was said before you can find the tutorial online to fix it. The hardest part is scraping the double sided tape off and getting on the new screen. Also I found if you don't glue it good and leave gaps, and dust can get between the screens. Also I would test the screen first, the first time I got it in I put it all together and glued it and it did not work. Good luck don't let my post put you down, it really is easy just take your time, if you have any experience taking electronics apart this is a sinch.

Thanks everyone...the million dollar question is if I broke only the digitizer or the LCD as well/ The digitizer s very fractured, but under the one section you can see through (less than 1/4 of the screen), the LCD looked fine. I think I will attempt to take it apart and see if the LCD is bad as well. I found a new digitizer and tools for under $40....

I quickly picked it up and noticed THERE WAS A HUGE CRACK in the screen!
I AM SO SAD RIGHT NOW cause i bought the atrix outright from AT&T
i dont think the LCD panel itself was damaged but the glass on the surface only. The display looks perfectly fine still so i was curious if anyone knows how to switch out the glass part? What tools do i need?

Nah, they are more than capable. I replace digitizers frequently and I rarely have to break out my "good set' of tools. Yeah these are simply cheap lumps of plastic. But they work. And these tools should be safer to use than almost anything that the average person, who doesn't do this sort of thing regularly, might have on hand. I just didn't want him to order a digitizer and attack it with a butterknife. I was trying to be subtle about it tho... We don't want anyone to scuff their bezel now do we?
I am always on the lookout for great deals on tools for this. And I look forward to your recommendation for a tool set.

Warranty covers a broken screen? Reason I ask is because I would rather have MOTO replace the screen (or the phone entirely) than me replacing the screen and voiding the warranty. I do not have insurance
I broke the glass on my phone 3 weeks after I bought it and didnt have insurance on it. I called motorola and they sent me an rma. I sent it in and they sent it back to me fixed in less than a week. If I remember right it cost $90 for them to fix it.
so it was only the digitizer after all?

A friend and I splurged on the $60 iFixit tool kit because we made some spare cash on the side repairing classmates' phones. It works well, although I still don't know if I would justify the price. It seems that the major complaint on reviews for replacement electronics parts are the parts that come with them, if at all, so maybe getting a better set is worth it if you replace digitizers frequently. Replacing the Atrix digitizer/screen is a fairly easy task compared to other phones until you get to putting the new screen on, at which point trying to get the cables back into the housing becomes a pain.'

Surprisingly there is no video to put it together...
Let me tell you from experience that it's damn near impossible to put it back together without tearing the digitizer ribbon straight off the screen while trying to slip it through that tiny hole that you pulled it out of. I've replaced two screens and I still don't think I can get it right.
My screen cracked twice while still under warranty, so I played the clueless n00b after I replaced the glass (cracked screens are not covered under warranty) and claimed the phone wasn't working and I couldn't figure out why.
Strange thing is, I also couldn't find a place online that would do replacement digitizers either. I didn't look for long, but if you don't have an option of a warranty return, I'd pay the $50 or so to let someone else do this for you and get it right...
YMMV...
I recommend taking it apart completely, you can attach the digitizer to the bezel/chassis and then you don't have to deal with trying to slide the cable through that tiny hole, you can just clean the digitizer, clean the lcd, put them together and then put the entire mounting plate back together and it just clips straight in...essentially you make this:

completely removes the chance of tearing the cable off the back of the digitizer...which is pretty common, sort of adds the step of getting the mounting plate off the fascia bezel...but its not to hard, be careful when popping up the volume/buttons camera cable area, that cable tears easily.

I saw a TBolt pop up on Craigslist and ended up trading my OG Droid (that I bought from a friend for $50) + $25 bucks for a Tbolt in very good condition but the Digitizer is cracked..
Its not Horrible, I still use the phone and love 4G.. but I want to replace the Digitizer.. I have done a few screens on IProducts and older phones but I have herd lots of horror stories about Digitizers not working after being replaced or dead spots and ghost touches on the TBolt..
So How many have done it and everything has gone 100% fine and where did you get your screen and adhesive? And then how many say i should save my pennies and trust someone else to do it?

Put to much 3 m tape on one and it smudged on ends and touch screen
Only worked half way but if you use hair dryer and get really hot and use a small amount of tape it isn't that bad but watched video on YouTube of repair from a repair universe and that's where I bought it

So Repair Universe has good stuff? I was hoping someone had sourced a better (read; cheaper) replacement.. $40 is steep compared to the $15 Digitizers that are still working on Itouches i replaced 2 years ago.. and I have never had to separate a LCD and Digitizer before when they were glued together.. that was the biggest thing I am unsure of..
I replaced a digitizer/LCD combo on the Thunderbolt, but I've also replaced the digitizer alone on the HTC Inspire and HD2 many times, and the Thunderbolt is very similar to these two (especially the Inspire). It's not very hard to separate the digitizer from the LCD, just heat the glass up very good first, and make sure you get some good 2mm adhesive for reassembling them. The digitizer does not adhere to the frame at all (though the shell does sort of wrap around and clip onto the glass), it is only adhered to the LCD so you have to be sure to get them nice and tight. The best way to do this is to just get an LCD/digitizer combo pre assembled, then it only takes about 5 minutes from start to finish, and you don't have to be nearly as careful. You can get the combo for like $50 on eBay, just make sure you buy from a reputable seller. Repairs Universe is trustworthy, but they sell the same stuff you get on eBay, and everything is made in China to begin with.
Awesome to hear. I won't be going to repare universe then. 40 for the digitizer alone is steep to me. I am not sure if I want to try and just do the digitizer or just swap both. I bought this TBolt for $60 used so I can probably afford to just buy the whole assembly.

My phone was dropped earlier however only the glass is cracked, not the actual screen. Everywhere I look, they only sell them as a pair, but I remember awhile back seeing just the glass for a reasonable price.

Because that 'replacement glass' is a scam not a digitizer. It will not fit properly and will not function as a digitizer. If you look at the video, the removed digitizer has some wires on it. That allows communication w/ the motherboard. That glass is just glass. Even if you could remove the broken touch panel (digitizer) and fit the glass to the phone you would have no ability to use it.
The digitizers for all amoled Galaxy S phones are not available without the attached display panel. The replacement screen costs $95 just for the part, then add the labor and that is why it is so expensive.
If you notice, even the people who made the video (while showing the removal) don't sell the digitizer alone. Pro shops replace the whole assembly. If you can get the job done for $100 including labor, take it. It's a great price.

I just need the glass.
I've seen some other videos and I got it down. All you do is take the glass and remove it from the amoled screen then replace. I don't need a digitizer.

Not a problem. Unless you have done any repair work on these things you would not know. Most non oled display phones have the ability to replace touch screen and lcd displays individually. Unfortunately, not ours.
This scam works because most people that buy the glass never really get around to installing it, or if they do and it does not work they think they did something wrong. I have repaired a bunch of these things even if you could remove the digitizer sucessfully as shown in the DirectFix video, you can't get a replacement part. Also, this operation needs to be done in a clean room. Any dust on the amoled panel will bruise it when paired with the touch panel so a successful repair is very unlikely outside of the factory. That is why the repair parts are sold together as a unit.

You can't 'just replace the glass'. The digitizer and front glass are one and the same. They are inseparable.

What you saw was the digitizer/glass being removed from the AMOLED panel. So, as stated before, no, you can't just replace the glass.

They are integral but can be separated.... just not rejoined and still work. Notice that the places that show the removal videos DO NOT sell a replacement part, just the entire screen. Most of the glass that is sold as a replacement is purchased from overseas. It costs more to return it than what was spent to purchase it. They are ALL worthless. If there are not wires coming from it it can't be a digitizer. If you remove your broken digitizer and are lucky enough not to destroy you amoled panel you still have nothing to replace it with. Most if not all people who buy these things never get around to attempting the replacement, or if they do, they destroy the panel in the process so they never get the chance see that the glass does not work. They think they screwed it up instead of being ripped off. That's why you don't see negative feedback about those things.... It's the perfect (almost) scam.
If you want to replace your glass buy the entire assembly ($95.00) on eBay and at the end of the process you will have a great phone again instead of a pile of junk.... not to mention feeling like you screwed up your phone.
Well what I'm going to do is wait for my brother to go to Verizon then take his vibrant and use his screen and mess with mine. Though I need to buff out the scratches. If by some miracle I do make it work I will post here. I hate when people find a way to fix something that some of us are trying to figure out and never report back how or just say "I fixed it was simple." WTF WAS IT! had to deal with that with my plasma which I finally did find one thread and fix it.

Digitizer and glass are factory glued together under high temperatures impossible to separate.
Just buy the whole assembly for $90 ( i've seen them for $79 once) with free shipping and tools on ebay. I always send offers using ebay "ask a question" and sometimes they give me few $$ off. Then it is a piece of cake since you can brake off the glass and remove the whole assembly that way.
My personal Vibrant is made of all kinds of used Vibrants and screen assembly comes from Galaxy S 4G which is good replacement too if you also want to get front facing camera.

while i don't recommend anyone else try, I was able to separate the glass from the screen. the glass was cracked but the screen still worked so i bought just the glass thinking it would be an easy replacement. so when i came to find them glued together i used my hot-air gun to melt the glue and remove to broken pieces of glass one by one, very carefully. when putting it back together with the new glass i couldn't re-glue it but the back tray holds the screen in place well enough. there was only one side effect that i have noticed so far. the glass is a little loose since not held to the screen, and i did burn the screen a little bit with the heat gun and it now has minor discoloration. but it is possible with enough patience and a steady hand.

Any video/help for broken galaxy s1 i9000 glass?.
I meam the front thing as i understand its just a piece of glass and not a touchscreen. But for the phone you talk about its a touchscren and not just a glass
Reason i ask is, i recently swapped out my first GNote for a second to see if the replacement would get better benchmark numbers and on the second day of ownership i managed to scratch the screen. I remember that Megiures has a plastic polish to remove scratches from convertible top windows that are plastic. Versus taking this one back for a new one (BB black tie), I wanted to try and remove the scratches.
Any thoughts or experiences you may have is welcomed.

The screen is glass. I doubt a plastic polish would do much of anything. I don't remember where but there was a glass polish posted somewhere that apparently works well.

Gorilla glass is a alkali-aluminosilicate glass, which is just fancy talk for chemically treated glass, so any plastic methods may or may not work, depending on how they work. I came from the Samsung Vibrant which has GG and I remembered this thread on XDA. It’s far beyond just a small scratch and the fix isn’t perfect, but it shows what can be done. There are down sides to doing this obviously.
As for the swap, I’ve ran into the same situation before and encountered snags. I went to exchange BB for a palm phone for a BB. The palm I had wouldn’t connect to BT in my car, refused to sync regularly, and a host of other problems. Well it has a small knick in the corner so they said they couldn’t exchange it for a BB. So I told them fine, I want a new one because this one doesn’t work right. They upheld their end of the bargain and did the exchange. I walked outside, attempted to connect to BT which I knew it would fail as it was a known issue, and took it right back in and said “id like to exchange this unscratched like new phone for a BB”. They had no room to move because I was following the rules this time. So moral of the story, you may have to exchange for a new Note then trade for a BB based on the new unscratched note not performing. It’s a long PITA, and be ready to argue about those restocking charges that AT&T love to charge.

I think he meant BB as in Best Buy, not Blackberry, not that it really matters. And thanks for posting the link to that thread, I knew it was around one of the galaxy forums, just didn't remember which one.

Ahh, I see, just assumed the Black Tie was a recent BlackBerry release, I avoid best buy at all costs so I'm not up on their lingo.

I've done some research on this and there's really no way to remove visible glass scratches. HOWEVER, often times if the scratch isn't too deep your average screen protector will 'seal' the scratch (fill it with the thin film of adhesive coating that most of them come with). I imagine this would also be true of the glass type protectors.
It depends on how deep the scratch is, but when I put a hairline scratch on my iPhone 4 a good clear screen protector 'erased' it and I'd forgotten it was there until I pulled it off recently.

The reason it seems to fill it is actually quite the oppisite. A small scratch is actually difficult to see. It's when it collects dirt and grime that it really starts screaming at you. Buy cleaning the screen (always first step in applying SP), you are effectivly minimizing the gunk in it, then preventing any future gunk plus applying a surface for eyes to gravitate to rather then the scratch. This helped alot on my ipod touch which saw alot of abuse getting passed around to the wife and other people playing with it in the living room.

No offense to you, or anything, but that seems EXTREMELY unethical to switch out a $600 phone just because you scratched it... there's no reason to return it, you are the one that scratched it....

Cleaning prior to applying a SP is good advice, but I'm not talking about grime in a scratch. You can see some glass scratches regardless of dirt (whether it's on the surface in good light or deep enough to see with the display on).
After the screen is cleaned, the adhesive coating of the screen protector fills the small furrow so your eye doesn't see the light being diffracted by the edges that have been etched (scratched) into the glass. The general concept is used to 'fix' larger glass cracks and chips with epoxy/resin when replacing the whole thing is not possible or worthwhile.

I completely agree with you. But since im paying Best Buy per month for accidental coverage snd they offer it full well knowing things like this occur, ill gladly get my moneys worth.
