Screen issue - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

This is my third note. And just like my previous one, a area on the screen (bottom right corner) has formed were the touch is less responsive and it has a different texture. I don't think that this is a residue but rather a burn or maybe something has rubbed off. Again, this is the second time this has happened and in the same exact place. Any help on what I should do would be appreciated.

What case are you using, where do you keep your phone, if this is the second phone to do this then something is going on on your end, I'm just curious as to what do we can eliminate causes
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA

I'm on my second Note and I've had the same problem on both. The middle-left part of the screen is covered in dead pixels & scratches. I'm honestly not sure how, I've got the iVisor AG screen protector (peice of crap, falls off after a day of distorting your screen) and the Flip Cover so scratching should NOT be happening. I love the phones performance, but damn if it doesn't have hardware issues.
Worst part is ATT has refused to replace it because it still works. If I run a "Premium Bike Shop" and I sell you some rusty POS unicycle that instead of a seat has a rhyno horn sticking straight up I'm going to replace it for what you paid for. I'm not going to say "Well that tires still spin, don't they?"

Magnet
Does your flip cover have a magnetic catch? If so, is the magnet located just about the bad area on the screen?

I baby my phone. Definitely not any fault on my end.

Small claims court is a beautiful thing.
Sue AT&T for the cost of a new phone, the ~$36 filing fee, any lost wages (for time spent both filing and the day you will spend in court) and a small amount extra for your time (the usual standard is to add the amount your income 'lost' for the time you spent in court & filing AGAIN to the total). You could also add a couple of extra hours of your normal working wage for the time you spent preparing the case as well.
In the long run, if you loose, all youve lost is ~$36 and one day worth of wages but if you win, AT&T will be forced to replace the cost of the phone and hopefully be penalized extra in the process.
Oh, and the 'cost of the phone' bit is if you were to buy it OFF contract because you wont be able to buy it ON contract since you already 'have' a contract.
Bring plenty of documentation proving your returns, the reason for the returns and evidence that this is happening to other people. Your AT&T contract probably isnt a bad idea to bring as well.

Ok I'm not going to sue anyone. I still have a one year warranty right? So that should take care of me for now. And if I am lucky maybe they will exchange one right then and there at the store. The thing that bothers me the most is that what if this happens again? Is it some sort of design flaw? Or did I really just get unlucky twice in a row.

Well I got 2 notes about 3 weeks ago and no issues yet... But I know Samsung have issues sometimes because I returned like 8 galaxy tabs 10.1 because of the oil slick issue on screen... Finally settled for the AT&T 8.9 galaxy version...

I have had this one about 6 weeks before I noticed the problem. Same with the other note. Hopefully att wont be a holes about it and actually help me out. I don't enjoy forking over 300+ dollars for a device that doesn't work correctly.

I downloaded touch test and saw a small less responsive area on the bottom right corner. Question why does the pen touch look 100x less laggy in that app than when actually using it for memos drawing etc...
I'm hoping for better for better s pen response in the future. Or should I stop hoping?

I'm talking about a physical issue with the screen. Not a software problem. It would be nice to know if att stores are acknowledging this screen problem. It seems like after a certain period of time something weres off in the lower right corner. BTW the area is about the size of a half dollar except its oval shaped.

Is this an area that you swipe frequently? I.e. Your finger has actually worn the screen.
This has happened to me on a few phones
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA

No I touch this area this least out of all
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA

I Just exchange my note due to the camera problems and then the new note I have is having same issue with the screen the same corner. not as big as a half dollar for me
But still notable compared to the other corners. Now I tested this on my old 4 day old note and my new one.
For now the issue isn't a problem for me since its the very corner. But if what the other person was saying about the screen degrading over time this could worry me.

Blackberry 3830 or try for another 3vo??

On my fifth return now and still, dust under the screen, tilted screen and green camera. The guy at the Sprint store (third party BTW) said that they were out and had no idea when they were getting anymore in. I only have about 8 days left til my 30 is up. I Called retentions and they said they could send my a loaner phone (bb 8330), refund my money and reset my upgrade. Should I take the offer and go to a corporate store for a new 3d, or keep hassleing the third party until they get a batch of un-defected 3vos?

return it for your money (and upgrade)...and wait it out until another batch comes in or go somewhere else for one. the phone is worth it....and this dev community seals the deal....
I think its time for you to start showering and also washing your clothes. This "dust" you speak of, funny how you read VERY little about it. Quit being picky and use your phone, its not a fashion show.
Because I paid good money for my phone and if anything is wrong with it, I want to be the cause of it, not come out of the box defective or blemished. The dust or particles under the screen are an eyesore and visable at all times. Quite frankly, as a paying customer, I have the right to return it until I'm satisfied. If your phone came out of the box with a crack on the screen or a jacked up power button, would you "just use your phone"? And by the way. Do get good reception under that bride where you live? Damn trolls!
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
What are the odds of getting 5 phones that have dust under the screen? Are you saying they come out of the box that way or did the dust gather under the screen after you used the phone some?
I highly doubt all 5 of your phones come fresh out of the box with dust under the screen. Return your phone and get your upgrade back then go to a corporate store from now on.
Not all of them had dust. The first one had a very green camera, the second ones camera wouldn't focus and the third one had a purple tint in all pics taken in sunlight. We compared them to the managers phone, and his camera was perfect. So I traded up again, this one had dust , dead pixels and what looked to be a cat hair? under the lens. And this one is crooked and dusty.

you as a paying customer do have a right, let alone with sprints new focus on great customer service!!!

Just curious, what was wrong with your MoPho? I just returned mine today. Loved the phones build quality and the GG screen but the screen hurt my eyes and i just couldnt take blur anymore. My 3d should be here tomorrow
I could have gotten a faulty device but it was just very laggy and glitchy. Rebooted once and shut off another time within a hour.. Said forget it and swapped it for my evo 3d, glad i did.

Not trolling but sorry.... 5 different 3d's and you have had that bad of experience? Some where you enter into the equation.
BTW The whole Green Camera issue is a SOFTWARE issue not hardware. So returning it for that was pointless as HTC does know about it and does plan to have a software fix for it. I know this as I have had the same issue as well. Patients sometimes is what it takes. Especially when dealing with New items and especially ones that use software.
Ive seen several 3d's and not a one with dust under the screen ever.
Dude just leave it alone, sure it sounds suspect but weirder things have happened... And my pictures do not favor green at all, may be a software issue but it def. varies from device to device then. Also you really think this store would be taking back all these phones without seeing problems? Youre crazy then. As he stated he compared it to the store managers camera.

If you have had more than 2 defective phones in a row you should return it, stop buying it, and get something else. No matter how you look at it (****ty luck, ****ty phone, sign from God, whatever) this phone is not meant for you and you should stop trying.
A Blackberry? Good luck with that, I would stick with an android phone for sure.

Note RETURN HELP!!!!!!!!

Any HELP WOULD be greatly appreciate!!!!
4 days ago me and my wife bought notes. I recently discovered today that some spots on my phone do not work with the s pen. So i decided i need to take it back and exchange for a new one. But right before taking the phone back my phone was dropped and received hardly noticeable dents/scratches on the phones side on the metal. You have to be shown most likely before you even realize it has dents/scratches.
Will i still be able to return it or hope they just dont notice it?
Thanks for your feedback!!

Was the purchase made at a corporate or dealer store, or ordered online? It'll be inspected at a corporate store, probably not inspected at a dealer store, and if it was an online purchase, the warranty department will try to get you to put a hold on a credit card till yours is shipped back because they seem to try hard as hell to not do their job. At all. You might be able to appeal to the manager of that store to let you swap it. Can you post pics of the "damage"?
Thanx for the quick response and to answer ur question. Yes it was at corporate store. But i don't want to return it just want to exchange it.

Yeah, I got that much. It shouldn't be a problem if the damage isn't too noticeable, but it's iffy. There's a certain amount of discretion given to managers so you may luck out. Please post pics when you can...I'll try my best to give you an honest evaluation of your chances.

Safest way to do this is.......exchange for different color.dont tell them about defect it had.then they will blame on u. because u droped it.
Let's wait for the pics before we make any call like that. I say that as a current AT&T RSC and former third-party sales rep.
best bet is do the return over the phone if possible. call them and they will send you a device, on reciept of the new phone you will mail the defective one back. i have had the same problem as you with dropping a phone right before exchanging it and it worked out ok. good luck!

Not exactly the best way. If the damage is too extensive, or a grumpy person inspects the phone when they receive it, his account will be charge for the full price of a phone, and there's not much you can do about it without a lot of hassle.
The best thing for him to do is post pics on here of the damage, because we have many AT&T employees on here who could probably make a fair assessment of the damage based on AT&T's stipulations, as I'm sure they've had to deal with returns like this before.
That being said, to the OP: you should be fine unless the case is deformed or there is a huge scratch through the paint. I once returned my old Captivate due to a faulty external speaker, and i had scraped the paint off of the front speaker grill so it was silver, and I had a gouge on one of the corners that was still noticeable but I had smoothed out with a little very fine grained sandpaper followed by steel wool. Sanding it out will probably not work for you on the chrome-ish border of the Note however.

Could you maybe get one without a light reflection directly on the damage? It's a little hard to tell how bad that is. Your best bet either way is probably to go into an AT&T store, and see what they think about getting it replaced. If you have a device service center in your area, they can do an exchange on the spot for some devices, depending if they have it in stock.
The Note's too new. DSCs won't have any in stock and the only reasonable alternative is to exchange it in store.
As was said, if you can get a few more pics that don't focus directly on the damage, it might give us a better idea of what we're looking at.
This same thing happened to my phone and I never even dropped it. Right in the same exact corner. I pull it out of my pocket one day and bam the silver paint is gone.

Screen defect

Ok so I've got a weird screen imperfection, it's an inch long thin lightening bolt shaped mark near the top center of the screen. It's only really visible with light blacks and greys, (and that's if your really looking for it). It's like after you shake an etch-a-sketch and you can still see a little of the line left over. Anybody else notice anything like this? I paid for this phone outright to keep my data and am unlocked and running cleanrom. I would hate to get a refurb and go through all the trouble of restoring this one and unlocking another. What would you do, live with it or get a refurb?

Welcome to AMOLED screens. Well known issue. Sometimes they are splotches too. Just Google it and you will find matches galore. If you switch it out you could get a worse one or a better one. Hard to say. I've got one tiny mark on mine towards the top middle. My GSIII had 3 huge splotches near the bottom.

However, for the number of these phones that are out in the world, the percentages are very low that you will see it again.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea that was an issue with this display tech. I love this phone so much I was willing to try to ignore it or say hey it makes the phone uniquely mine but I do hate that my phone is a little less perfect lol.
I guess I'm going to stop by Verizon and see what they say, if they offer me a refurb I think I'll just keep what I have. If somehow I can get a new one maybe I'll ask for the grey instead of white this time? Dam, if I do that then the iPhone owners I regularly crap on will be able to talk crap about my less than perfect android LOL.

Isnt that illegal? And wont they find out anyhow?
That is surprising to me. Mine has flown off my lap on onto the street when getting out of the car, fell out of my coat pocket onto the ground, dropped it from a ladder while painting, and dropped it numerous times at home on the floor. Never broke or cracked or nothing. I have a case but never use it. This phone is nice and slim, the case made it too damn bulky.
If you're going to toss it I'll take it. It would be a good experiment phone.

I'm just really surprised to see so many DNA breaks from dropping it. In fact I have never cracked a screen, knock on wood. My old Droid Razr was pretty durable too. Now my daughters ipod touch broke if you looked at too hard, haha JUNK
The DNA is supposed to have triple gorilla glass too. I wonder if some of these are refurbished with fake junk digitizers? The screens should not be shattering that easily.

I had to get a replacement for my DNA, which came with the OTA, due to battery issues. I was looking forward to getting a phone with the old software and when the replacement came it had the old OS; but that had to go back due to the power button being concaved, so it was flush with the top, blown speaker and a dead pixel; and this was how it came out of the box! (100+ point inspection my a$$). The next replacement came and it too had the old software but wouldn't connect to WiFi. I received the third replacement yesterday and it was perfect, but the OTA was pre-installed. Hope you get not only the old software version but also a workable phone.

You can keep it, but don't sell it. When you report your phone lost, the carrier gives it a bad ESN.

well i suppose so yes it could be outside of the boundaries of the insurance agreement but i pay a subsidy and an insurance fee for a reason. I could claim the phone was stolen swap the motherboards and sell the broken unit to cover the insurance premium but i wont be doing that. I see no harm no foul. They will be recieving a perfectly functional peice of hardware in the exact condition I reported during the claim... to each his own though
If you swap the motherboard you will be converting the new Dna to the old esn that you just reported lost... So you are just giving yourself a bad esn. Lol
Also its fraud but whatever you want to do

Didn't I post a link with a video? It seems really easy to fix, that's why I wanted it. I even put an ad on craigslist. If you report it lost or stolen you could always "find it again" and they can reverse the bad ESN. My cousin bought a bad ESN phone from ebay. Verizon ended up calling the original owner and he went ahead and released it, they made the ESN good again. I don't know all the details but that's what he told me, sometime last year.
Hmm options, how much will it cost? Since the phone has to be sent away and cracked open anyway, buy the digitizer and send it to be jtagged, 2 birds with one stone. It might cost you a little more but you will be golden in the end. Fixed phone and S-off.

Best Customer Support call ever!

So, I have my Galaxy Note 2 rooted, my own mods and themes, with CLEANROM ACE 4.7 (updating to 4.8 now)
I JUST got this replacement phone a couple days ago, and I HATE getting a phone that isn not up to par with my standards which are:no blemishes or defects
I got off work and now I keep have signal issues. It is not from the root, or ROM because I factory rest wipe cache, dalvik, and wiped the ROM. So I called Customer Support.
The call ended up being almost an hour (the replacement took 5 minutes to send out)
Turns out the man I was talking to was a big techie.
I told him how I was tired of getting phones with physical defects and he said it's not Verizon's fault they're not in the phone making business, which is true. He told me "you know you've had 34 replacements and you didn't have to pay a thing. We're here to provide excellent customer service. No phone is perfect and if they were, I wouldn't have a job. So you have pretty much tried everything. There is another way you can go and if you want, ROOT your device that way you can be like "screw your software I want my own"
After he said that The call just went on and on. Turned out to be pretty good.
So for those of you that blame Verizon for all of your issues, blame the manufacturer.
Bucket List
101: Have a Verizon representative tell you to root your device : CHECK
102: Have a Verizon representative say Apple monopolizes their phones and will not pay them : CHECK
Awesome

Cool story and nice to hear support for rooting phones from a Verizon source. ...but 34 replacements? What's that all about?

Verizon likes to send me phones that have physical defects. One time they sent me one with a dented bezel and I wrote on a piece of paper "Learn how to inspect yours phones. I'm disappointed" stuck it under a screen protector and sent it back. Ever since then, samsung is making the bezels out of a different plastic and finish that does NOT crack.

It's going to get scratches and dings unless you wrap it in bubble wrap and never touch it. It's just a phone. There are better things to be obsessed over.
Also, I'm hoping that you don't believe your piece of paper made such an impact that they changed the bezel material.
You have a serious problem if you've needed 34 replacements in your life.
Issues, bro. Issues.

Wait, wow.... 34 replacements of the SAME phone? Now thats wild... I work at Verizon and I've never seen that before. What makes the phone so bad? Ive had/done plenty of certified like new replacements and never had a defect except 1 phone that had a bad AMOLED screen.

I was at a pub with my girl and pointed to an angry looking dude all by himself looking at everybody. Envious. I told her that's the kinda guy that trolls forums and talks down to everyone who posts. She asked what I meant. I showed her this thread.
