Imminent ICS: Is it worth to upgrade? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

Okay guys,
All of us know about the imminent ICS update that our phones are receiving/will receive. Users of Ray, Neo V and Arc S have already the chance to upgrade to 4.0 version of the little robot.
But, after reading reviews or watching videos, i can notice that there are many voices of displeasure about the update. Phones getting slower, battery drains, HD games lagging or just not working...
What do you think:
-In this month, Will Sony develop a reworked version of the update (fixing all bugs described), releasing it for first time for the next phones in the list -XM, XMP, LWW, Arc, Neo, Pro-, and also for the phones that have already received the first update?
-What will you do? Will you update and keep ICS? Will you just test? Or you will stay on GB?
More info will be appreciated (official news, ...)
sorry for my english

This should not be a problem.
If you dont like the official ics roms, you can always go back to stock gb.
Or just make a custom ics roms based on the official ics.

well.
Well man as i am a user o xperia NEO V and had this update,I think that it does not worth it...it is laggier/some apps not working and the overall speed of my phone had ruined..Not that much, but as i play HD games, I can feel the difference...Finally,it is useful that games based on orientation are not working on my ICS NEO V,but were working smoothly on GingerBread ICS neo v!
Conlcusively,as i have unlocked the bootloader of my second phone XperiaMiniPRO and tried ICS on beta stage...i think that this small screen is not for ics...Gingerbread is more smooth, better, better and better
I dont think that SONY will fix these bugs for now,i cant predict for summer but I really hope!

This is opinion, GENERAL discussion about our devices. This topic concerns to all of us. It's OBVIOUS that BETTER ICS custom roms will exist after the release of the update. Please give more mature opinions
About djnik7... I think, would ICS run faster on the mdpi devices? i think, as the screen resolution is smaller than the Neo V, Ray, etc., the processor has to deal with less graphics to run...

alright then my opinion is, the official ics will not run any better on our devices. although im still not sure because we havent even taste it yet.
but due to other xperia users who has has experienced ics, most of them complaining about it, like slow fps, high usage of battery and ram and that kind of stuff but yet im still not sure,
because who knows ics made for lww, xmp xm or active are probably different than ics that are already came to ray, neo v, arc s and it could probably be even better.
so our bet is just wait and try it for ourself
if one not satisfy of its performance, just wait for an updates 2.4.2, 2.4.4 and so on or just go back to stock gb 2.3 or maybe wait for someone make an ics roms that are based on the official ics.

Will certainly test ICS, after that we will see.
A small note to previous user: ICS is Android 4.0, not 2.4

cheers!!
I so didn't expect that! I picked this because I'd be able to change to a custom rom once Sony Ericsson left it behind.
I do want to try an overclock kernel soon though :S
Yes this is true. Se just tweeted this

I'll believe it when I see it in person!
A really great news!!! I want the update very much, SE please release it before 2012
That would be quite unlikely since they just released the 2.3.4 update.
Awesome. I gotta say that I wasn't really sure if the phones could support it, but I guess they can.
Love the way they've made the hardware pretty much the same across the Xperia line, so they can get updates out faster.
Do you think the hardware accelerated GUI in ICS will eliminate all stuttering on android phones -ours in particular?
I know it's not much on the Xperia line, especially the Mini, which I have, but if it can get rid of it all together, it'd be nice.
Good news I hope we'll have release dates soon.
wow! This what what we all waiting for. Hope it'll be released very soon!

which mini do you have? 2011 or the older one? i have the sk17i, and in my opinion, it is the smoothest experience i can get on a cheap phone like this. i wouldn't mind if sony is not porting the ics.

On a cheap phone like this? Its even smoother than any dual core phone ive ever tried, well, except for the S2. It never stutters or lags, even when im playing with my emulators
Mini has lag problem in the touchscreen.
I hope that they can solve it with 2.3.5. o ICS.

Calm down . You have an unlocked bootloader, just flash the beta. I've been using it since it came out, and everything's fine.
Must be really bad for those without unlocked bootloader. But I saw that the T.E.A.M. rom will bring some ICS features to gingerbread in the next update, like swipe to dismiss notification. Team rom doesn't require unlocked bootloader.

True there are difficulties BUT
What im saying is Sony is a big corp with 100+ employess *Maybe
Assuming each Phone may have atleast 5devs working together everyday from 9am-4/5pm
They can easily put together a ROM
Yes the signing takes LOTS of time but with the resources they have at hand they cann pull of things at amazingly fast rates
NOW
Compare it to our devs here
Especially CM9
They take the basic SDK and port it to like so many devices !
Yes the signing part of GPS and blah is not done as it isnt required but if them devs with limited resources can pull it off
SONY sould have no problem
Our devs took ICS beta and turned it into a masterpiece !
Sony should've released the final within lets say 2-2.5 weeks after release
Im disappointed >_<
I mean no offence to anyone, its just my thought

I really don't think they will abandon 2011 range Xperia's with ICS after all advertising they did(come on even boxes came with ICS upgradable sticker ),they will give it but will advice customers not to upgrade like they did in their latest blog post, maybe just maybe a 2.3.7 update too will come in the corner for people who decided not to upgrade.Hope they will go to 4.0.4 instead 4.0.3 these can be few last updates we get for 2011 range :/

SE ICS: A Bad Deal?

I've just been re-reading the official Sony comparison of their Gingerbread and ICS offering. This time I've had the chance to read more properly all the things they said. For the first time I actually have sympathy for Sony. The manufacturers bring out phones (e.g. SE) with the Xperias 2011 all running Gingerbread from the very start, then the next Google upgrade wipes out the phones. I owned the 2010 X10 Mini and our phone got wiped out the same way. It seems to me that we consumers do not benefit. Anyone who comes to this forum is already a bit of tech. nut, we are a very small population of the whole market, of course we want to try what's new and hot. But in this blog, Sony is explicitly saying that ICS is much, much more demanding on system resources and that we will definitely see a fall in performance, they clearly reference longer boot up time, apps force closing and stalling as well as poor video performance for different reasons that they explain in the blog.
http://developer.sonymobile.com/wp/...nical-differences-between-gingerbread-and-ics
Now I want to wait before I upgrade and check out the news. A few new icons and wallpapers is NOT good enough reason for me to upgrade. Better battery is a good reason to wait, which in that blog, Sony says you will get with Gingerbread over ICS. Do we really benefit here? Do we have to buy a new phone every year now, because Google is bumping up the demands of Android, like Microsoft did with Windows Vista? Windows 7 has less requirements than Vista, only slightly, and 8 has the same requirements as 7 so at least we could use the same laptop/pc for a few years. With Google, the way they are doing this is screwing us over I think.
For you, stay with Gingerbread, move to ICS, not sure or want to wait?
Ray users say they havent experienced any major bugs... Battery is definitely poor for now.....
Sent from my WT19i using XDA
I think on the minis and active devices we have the advance of having a smaller resolution area while having almost the same hardware as the other xperia 2011
Sent from my SK17i using XDA
They are really both very good points: we can look to the current Sony beta roms for more clues and it is true, our smaller screen being powered by the same CPU is an advantage. Perhaps we Mini users will have the least trouble amongst the 2011 Xperias?
Gingerbread would still be the most dominant OS, due to its stability on most phones,
having a new OS or phone is not always the best option.
I really thank the devs here in XDA, they are keeping old phones alive,
giving us a chance to have a taste of the new flavor and further improving stock OS on current phones.
I just recently read about the Xperia S Rom ported to Xperia X10 here, how cool is that...?
I'll choose the custom ICS rom.. sony and other manufacturer has done nothing but giving us all those bloatware while calling it "feature" rather than craps. + I see upgrade as change in UI, but sony's ICS UI has not change much compared to GB
Sent from my Xperia Mini Pro using xda premium
you can always remove the bloatwares , though of course with custom roms we can do a lot of things which are still restricted even with a rooted stock rom

If you want a different UI, just use a different home.apk? Just saying...
But yea i'm with the OP on these thoughts, have had the same thoughts for quite some time now. The thing is, we can make ICS faster on our devices just as we did with GB, but... How stable will the non-stock ICS roms be? Honestly I would rather see MIUI roms derived from GB as a base than ICS. A lot more stable with less bugs. Even the MIUI roms aren't AOSP based (as are official MIUI releases), they are FXP based roms. So, all in all we are between Stock and FXP releases.
I am not bashing on people working on developing MIUI and various ICS based roms, but like the OP, i'd rather have stability over "new features", such as full HW acceleration, which can be triggered using a variable in GB too (mind you that uses more juice).
I am going to seriously think about moving Spartan Rom from stock GB rom as a source, to stock ICS as a source.
Even if the battery consumption, which in my list of priorities for a fully functional rom is the highest in the list, is sub-par, I wont be switching over to ICS personally.
@drumraden if you see about other devices there are lots of stable roms are available (mostly aosp based, even I am using a stable custom rom for my Xoom)
We just need to give time to the devs to come up with stable ice roms.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA
You don't get my point.
The only reason to build an MIUI from ICS sources, is for the **** of saying its ICS therefore updated.
Yeah as for battery drain, I'm afraid Sony says on that site above that battery will be less durable with official ICS. What a shame. The discussion here though is really making me thing about all of this.
Yeah I am seriously thinking of going back to gb as soon as there is a good miui rom I am right now on ics because there is only one really stable miui release for the lww and it is ics but i really prefer better battery life.
On the other hand I prefer ics over hb a thousand times on my tab but it has like 7 times the battery of my phone so I have no issue with that.
I'll prefer ICS when main apps start to requires ICS.
While the requirements surround the GB I'll stick with it.
But it's nice to know that if it occurs my phone will be ready.
That's why I bought my mini-pro.
Personally, I will first give it a try. Then we will see, if it deserves to stay on my LWW or not...
yup ... sure will giv official a try ... but the best rom on gb wud be miui .... is that project still going on or has been dumped ?
i think lasan is still currently working on the GB MIUI port...

All the roms here are so much faster than stock, because here people care about the roms. it feels like the big companies just put something together but never care to optimize it. android's biggest advantage is the custom stuff.

Official: 2011 Sony Xperia handsets will NOT get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, has been taking questions from customers on Facebook and, perhaps inadvertently, revealed that both the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro will not receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.
We have been waiting for Sony to make an official statement on their Jelly Bean upgrade plans and this is the first concrete news we have on the matter. The Xperia arc S was the highest specced 2011 Sony Xperia handset, so if this handset isn’t getting it we can conclude that none of the other Xperia handsets from the 2011 range will get the update either. However, the 2012 Xperia range do look likely to get the update, although timing remains an unknown right now.
Its funny that many of the 2012 Xperia handsets have lower specs than the 2011 models. It sux! anw, we can hope for a developer to port JB for 2011 Xperia lineup. & Cynomod10 is coming with JB
Credit goes to www.xperiablog.net
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/07/26/official-2011-sony-xperia-handsets-will-not-get-android-4-1-jelly-bean/
They have made a mistake
Xperia 2011 handets should have had that minor upgrade to Jelly Bean, especially given the performance issues. Also, it means those handsets are stuck permanently on 2.6 Linux kernel, unless one goes the custom ROMs way. Thankfully, Cyanogenmod devs are supporting Xperia Mini Pro, so I am starting on a quest to root my SK17i.
Jelly Bean would be slow on our phones if official update was done. Sony will push own Timescape UI inside instead of Butter UI, so we don't get any performance improvements in UI.
It's a shame, but it was expected...
Yeah, i also expect 2012 xperias will probably get Jelly Bean update around this time next year (+/- couple months), just before Key Lime Pie comes out

I wonder....
does anyone remember Xperia x10i? the funniest was they came from Donut 1.6 to GingerBread 2.3. they've got 3 official FW update.. and me guess we still have a chance.. Our device is not low range since we have 512 ram inside. and some of Xperia 2012 family also have the same type.
I was expecting this. They won't update 2011 xperia phones to JB. But they will update 2012 xperias. If I buy another phone, it won't be a Sony. Maybe a Nexus 7 but not a Sony. I was very disappointed with the ICS update. Can't imagine a JB for our phones, maybe to slow...
Long live to Gingerbread! xD

The thing is that to be able to create stable custom roms you need support from the manufacturer. Without proper source code or hardware drivers/libraries that suit the new OS developers have to tack everything together which greatly increases the chances of bugs.
IMHO the least thing Sony could do is provide a proper hardware layer to developers to give them a solid base to work from. Nobody really needs the Sony customisations anyway so they could actually save a lot of development time there.
Personally I'd wish all android phones came with AOSP, like what Apple and Microsoft do. It saves the manufacturers a lot of development and opens the way for more frequent/longer OS updates.
All hope of custom rom
**** Sony, where's Ericsson when we need him?

Here is example!
1.Bravia Engine wont work without proper supported lib files
2.Same will happen with xLoud
But we can force SONY to give us JB update
If majority of all the customers keep on telling them about the update for 2011 Family, after all customers are the only strength of any COMPANY
What say guys?
Yeah yeah yeah! As what I have expected from SONY!

Personally I buy an SE phone for the hardware (who else makes a tiny phone with a useable hardware keyboard?) while knowing you can optimise the thing to personal taste by modding the firmware and using apps.

Sony guys are just pulling a cheap stunt..how could the hardware go out of date in one year...they guarantee a good user experience in just a year? What sort of a trickery is this...Anyway...Root and enjoy...that's better than what Sony would offer anyway

Don't you get it.Sony's main target is to make money. This is a business after all.Besides 2011 models are outdated now,be happy that they gave us a stable ICS fw(unlike lg,samsung even htc who abandoned most of their 2011 mid end lineups in ICS update).Their main target must be improving and selling more 2012 series and upcoming 2013 xperia models and that's what Sony should target on if they ever want to be a giant in smart phone business-not updating every 2011 model !
Man I was really Hopping for JB
Well, When JB comes to any Xperia hopefully our Friendly Developers in Xda will port it in our device ^_^
i'am not surprised at all ! cost saving is essential for a business
anyway i use the official ROM cuz i get the clearbass and some Sony apps
once a JB ROM has those features ported i'll jump straight to it XD
maybe we'll have to wait until Xperia J get some beans

That's why i said that Sony need some brain in the software development departament
It's nothing new...Sony must focus on 2012 and the upcoming 2013 Xperia series. However,i'm happy with stock rom (debloated),few mods and apps from Xperia T and 587 fw. It's very smooth and i always have 150-160 mb of free RAM. I've tried CM10 and PACMAN roms, they're very good, but i hate the fact that phone is rebooting when view videos and also i miss the Bravia Engine, because, let's be honest, without Bravia Engine, the Xperias display sucks when viewing videos (at least for me).But the explanation from Sony why the 2011 series is not getting JB,is hilarious (i mean let's compare the Arc S with Xperia J :laugh. However,i think that next year i'll change my Neo with an Xperia V.
Bad News... Anyways Why you post a new thread when we have THIS Android 4.1 Jelly Bean [DISCUSS THREAD]

I didn't removed everything,i've removed just few useless apps (i've kept fb inside xperia). Beside this,i'm not using the phone for gaming,so,for me is more than enough. And you have 200 mb all the time,or just when you turn on the phone? i have 150-160 all the time. However, before debloating i was having just about 90-100 mb lol
As for me I will move to Apple. Not because their updates to all phones, but because the app devs in android will left many of us. Jelly Bean ask for 60 fps, most of the biggest devs, are working to reach this level. Then, after a few months I will be not suprise with I see an app exclusively for JB. One thing in my defense to move to Apple, Chrome. Chrome is a google app, in IOS even a 3GS can get it. But Here at least ICS. Another example? Snapssed. Snapseed bought by Google, wonderfull app, it works in 3GS, 4, 4S and 5, but for us, it needs at least tegra 2. So, I am leaving, it was good and wonderfull time here with everybody, but I got stressed about it. Every year, this same story and I did not learn. Always buying android phones, and now I found me exactly in the same disgusting situation. I will not try to use custom roms, though I know how to put it in my phone, because even the great effort , they are still buggy. I am not arguing, but it is the truth. Many will say that ICS is enough for me, yes, until now is more than enough. But knowing how android is, soon will be not enough.
So friends I will stay here until sell my Xperia Neo and buy an Iphone 4. After that Goodbye.

with all due respect but I do not think we should rejoice because both have almost the entire line 2011 with ics, I see the hand of everyone being equal in hardware. but for me it's the least we would have to be done to win customers since bought by the promise of neo v ics, however icebug got a way with ginger. because it gave us the applications "nxt"? if not for the developers .... Samsung has updated the s2 was minimal upgrade at least the arc / s

U should try the new pacman ROM...its uber fast...has every concivable thing working and leaves oodles of RAM and free memory...and anyway, as soon as they release the official JB, i guess all the ROMs out there will be able to extract the required libraries and port them over to make the custom ROMs stable...that's what happened with ICS too
jelly bean
y beg sony , lets go with cm 10
