First off. These forums have been amazing for this newb trying to get my device set up. I am good to go except for playing rippped DVD's.
I am running Calkulin+Clemsyn Froyo Combo.
I travel a lot so I am trying to rip my DVD collection into AVI's and then store on my 32gb micro sd card. I rip the dvd's into AVI's (currently DVD Ripper Platinum) on my PC and then copy over.
My issues:
1. I find that when I copy to sdcard2 (as opposed to sdcard) the files corrupt less often. Often times, I rip on pc, copy to sdcard2 and load with qqplayer and it hangs. I then copy the same file from the pc to sdcard and it plays. Strange.
2. Even when I get get the file to play, the quality is terrible. Audio ahead of video. Very herky/jerky during any type of action. Not sure if this is an issue when I am ripping or a Gtablet setting. Does avi vs mp4 make a difference?
Any help would be appreciated.
I've been watching ripped dvds as Xvid avi files on my gTab since day one without issues or problems. I use DVDFab and am running VEGAn 5.1.1 without any tweaks.

Thanks. What Gtab player are you using? Also, is xvid it's own format or is it a type of avi?
I also have no problem watching AVI or MP4. Try a different player. I use Summer Player from the market or the video player in ES file explorer. Calkulins and Clemsyn kernal.
Does your ROM have the video drivers that can utilize the nvidia video HW? When I was flipping between ROMs a while back, I recall that my video playback was poor on some ROMs because drivers were absent.
I have good video playback on all the tntlite releases and I am at 5.0.0 right now. I use the stock "normal profile" on handbrake to transcode dvd rips into mp4/m4v files. A typical movie is about 1G.
I have used the standard "gallery" to play movies, and currently use "mVideoPlayer" from the market.
For myself, I'm using VEGAN-Tab, 5.1.1 and the default player. I use AnyDVD with Handbrake and use the iPad preset. Works great with excellent video quality.

I think that may be the issue as I tried the suggestions posted and am still getting very choppy video. Can you let me know where to download. I did a search to no avail.
Thanks.
Issue fixed. Flashed Vegan-Tab 5.1.1 and everything plays great. Tried Ginger Edition before going to 5.1 and had same issues.

Right. I think only the releases up to froyo/2.2 have the proper drivers for decent video.
absolutely incredible...

I have a diff issue with watching videos. I feel as if the sound isn't loud enough no matter which setting I mess with. When I listen to music this is never an issue so I know sound is fine on my g tab. The video files play fine on my laptop and I have tried the volume buttons on top. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance I love this forum
I am having issues playing movies off of the microsd card. I have about 8 movies saved to a 32gb microsd. I have two movies that will play (they are about 800mb each) but all of the others don't play (they are all 1.2 -1.5 gb). Does anyone know if the gtab has issues with playing larger files off of the microsd. I am running TNT Lite 4.4 Any suggestions appreciated.
Disclaimer: only had a Droid phone for 3 days now so bare with me
Short version: No matter what player I use (stock, vplayer, QQplayer, Moboplayer) nor what video file I attempt to play (WMV, AVI, MP4, MPG, ASX) I get horrible fps....I mean like 1 frame a second....it stutters really bad.
Details:
I am running CM7's latest ROM (Android v2.3.4).
I have just about every option I can find set for performance (no animations, updating widgets, max CPU set to 710 MHz, all other programs closed).
SD card is a Class 4 rated 8 GB card.
Video files range from 5 MB to 100 MB and are not resized for mobile device play. They are native 800x400+ resolution.
Now, I am new to Android coming from a Windows Mobile device and I am used to TCPMP just playing whatever I threw at it without any issue or special conversion....and it was on a slower card and slower processor than what the Eris is.
Is there something I am missing to get this to work? Is it the ROM or do I need to down-convert all the video files for the native resolution of the phone?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
the only way i get my videos to play smoothly on my phone is to convert them to 480x320 with a vid bitrate ~700kb, 25f/s, with an mp4 container and x264 codec, and regualr 128 aac audio... played with Meridian Media Player. kind of a hassle but im pleased with the results...
Thanks for the clarification and settings to shoot for conversions.
Does anyone know if the 1+ GHz Android phones work without converting videos to a more native resolution and frame rate? Ironically, it seems I was a little spoiled with Windows Mobile playing them without issue with TCPMP.
I can't for the life of me get this to work i have this 1080p AAC/MP4 harry potter movie- works fine on my laptop and desktop- but wont play on this tablet.
Initially when I got the tablet i was excited and installed the gtabcomb rom (for 1.1) this was AWESOME, but obviously no hd video support (which is really what I am after...)
Ive tried CM7, Gtab TNT lite 4.40, Calkulins, and im about to try the vegan rom.
I have the 1.1 boot loader.
Ive tried like 5 different video players, none have worked except for the software decoding on rockplayer... HOWEVER this was 10 fps, and distorted.
What do I do here? I really want decent hd video.
Thanks!
EDIT: Vegan is clear and the audio is working properly all with the default player BUT the FPS is less than 15...
Now what ?
What player have you tried? For me, between qqplayer, mvideoplayer, and arcmedia, I can play just about everything under the sun.
:<
Going to try some other players now, i will make a list.
strangely - after having the video work (sort of ) in the vegan default player... I tried rock player again.
That fails- when i click hardware decode it just flashes and goes back to the video list... software decode does nothing... just black screen.
SO i uninstalled it.
And now the default vegan player doesn't work at all- just says " can't player this video" (or something like that).
So frustrating
EDIT:
Rock Player : Clear video but 15fps or lower, audio but jumpy.
QQ - Clear video imagery but 15fps or lower, no audio.
ARCMedia - Choppy video at 15ps or lower, choppy techoy - audio....
mVideo - "Cannot player this video" (exiting... then im back at the video list much like the default app)
Try moboplayer, but I dont think the gtablet can do 720p or 1080p unless properly encoded specifically for the gtablet - not powerful enough (ie stuttering).
Same
Mobo player with soft decoding works but still 15fps or lower.
What is the absolute best container, format for a 1080p file to be encoded?
Moboplayer plays almost everything I throw at it with very little stuttering while streaming from my home network using UPnPlay but the audio from the gtab is way to low. When I plug in headphones the volume is OK.
I have gone into sound settings on the gtab and the set device volume is always at 50% even after I increase it to 100%.
Suggestions?

Weird. My gtab's sound is the loudest out of the tablets I have available to me (ipad, iconia, and transformer).
Froyo
Are you running Froyo? Had the same problem until I upgraded to honeycomb. Now its nice and loud.
I thought there was absouletly no HD video support in HC :/ Is it possible to get smooth, quality 1080p playback with 1.1 BL + HC (I guess Gtabcomb?)
And how?! DO WANT!
:/
It would seem that even the stock rom does not play my video Guess it might just be the damn video lol.
Media info is saying MP4 container, h264 and acc audio.
:/
zzz
Someone please tell me what is going on, I can't imagine everyone is using these tablets without any video support...
I nvflashed to 1.2 BL - stock. bone stock, no new apps nothing.
and then i downloaded some trailers from here
http://www.h264info.com/clips.html
Now, the damn viewsonic site even says this the gtablet supports these:
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode, 1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode, Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
AND- the video (for instance the serenity hd dvd trailer on that page above) is:
Video Codec: H.264
Trailer Resolution: 720p (1280x720), High Profile (Xbox 360 Compatible)
Audio Codec: AAC LC
Resolution: Stereo, 48 kHz, VBR 128 Kbps
Why is that not playable?! I tried multiple other formats and nothing works...
I want to see this device in an out of the box way play hd video as it suggests... i can can't it?
Really frustrated, spent 4 hours tonight flashing pretty much every 1.1 rom and then nv flashing to 1.2 and flashing like 4 different 1.2 roms (including illuminate, which looked really promising but just gets stuck and the "Illuminate Android" screen...
Flash videos player (snotr.com) but youtube.com videos do not. (error occured).
EDIT: Just managed to get VitalPlayer installed (downloaded apk on computer and installed) - plays all of the above videos BUT still they are terribly slow frame rates... what am i doing wrong?
So encoding in MPEG-4 makes everything work... smaller file sizes, smooth frame rates... AAC audio seems good too.
Set bitrate at 4000 and I guess this is how ill have to do everything :/
I am currently running C&C 1.5 v6.
Streaming over UPnPlay.
Most .avi files play ok using the stock movie player - sound and picture
When I try the same file with Mobo the volume goes way down.
When I press the volume button up the on screen volume indicator gose from 50% to 100%, but there is very little change in the volume. The gtab volume indicator does not appear.
When I go back to gtab settings the volume has gone from 100% to 50%.
I have gone into the UPnPlay settings and switched between volume and volume DB with no change.
Look i know your trying to help but if you had read a single thing I have posted
* I HAVE NO ISSUES WITH VOLUME *
Just trying to get an hd video (preferably 1080p) to play at a decent frame rate (23.976+).
Thus far no h264 video works... they are all 15fps or lower.
I have found that a 720p h264 re encoded to mpeg4 @ 4000 kbps does play smooth.
However a 1080p h264 re encoded to mpeg4 @ 4000 kbps is (better than just h264) still sluggish, and the audio doesn't quite sync up.
I really just want to know what video container/codec will work best on a stock 1.2 BL T&T Rom.
I was replying to roberto188 regarding my ROM.
Didn't mean to hi-jack thread, I was just sharing my experiences and looking for help.
Well apologies accepted I am sorry for my mini-rage, just really frustrated trying to get some hd videos working on the thing.
Seems I am just going to have to deal without them...
No worries.
For what it is worth, I just switched to GtabComp 3.2 and the audio issues disappeared.

Try using this to convert your videos for the gTablet. http://dvdvideosoft.com/download/FreeVideoToAndroidConverter.exe
It's free and it has a setting for the Viewsonic Viewpad 10 (1024x600, 1.5Mbps, 128kbps AAC, 48khz, standard quality) and they play perfectly on my Caulkulin+Clemsyn Combo v6 (Froyo).
Thanks will do! I found that mpeg seems to work best but i def got hw acceleration working with caulkulin+clemsyn combo not sure if h264 is working but at least the videos are clear and crisp - I will see about this software thanks!
edit:
FYI Just tried the program, it converts them to mpeg-4 anyway just does it really clean, and faster than handbrake.
Good find TY!!!
so does this mean that when ViewSonic says the Gtablet can play 1080p....are they really saying if you convert your existing movie file into another format with different bit rates and special settings then the Gtablet can play 1080P?
My daily driver will do 250 mph and use no gas.......if I push it out of an airplane....
Hi there, I was having some video lagness and playback problem since 2.1 stock rom. I though the incoming 2.3 will help in solving this problem but yet even the performance and speed is greatly improved in 2.3, this problem remains, so I try to seek for some helps regarding this problem here.
There is a weird problem during my video playback, I had put in several types of video ranging from 800*680 to 1920*1080, with different format (mp4, avi, wmv, rmvb) and had serious lagging on certain video. From here I am just going to list out 3 examples of video that have playback issue:
Player used to play these video: default mediascape (2.1), default media player (2.3), mobo player
Location of these video: SD Card (Class 4 16GB, write speed 5mb, read speed 11mb from SDTOOL)
Video A
Size: 1gb
Frame Rate: 23-25
Rate: 0??
Resolution: 1280*720
File Type: mkv
Problem: Heavily lagging and scene freezing as well as unsynchronised audio and video playback. The audio is always faster than the video. At 2.3 firmware, mobo player able to play the video but without audio. When choosing soft-decoding, the video start to lag and audio process faster than video
Video B
Size: 33mb
Frame Rate: 29-30
Rate: 3000
Resolution: 852*480
File Type: wmv
Problem: Lagging when playing video. Screen freezing and frame skipped as the video progress as the playing seems like to maintain video and audio synchronization, video back to normal at last 10 second
Video C
Size: 97mb
Frame Rate: 29-30
Rate (in mobo player): 2398
Resolution: 1280/720
File Type: f4v
Problem: Almost the same as above, video freezing and lagging behind the audio. In 2.1 mobo player able to play it directly but in 2.3 soft decoding is required before playing this video
Is this type of problem occurred due to hardware constraints or software problem? What is the actual constraint on video type/format that x10 can support? I heard from lot people saying their device able to play 720P HD video fine but it is not the case in my device? Please help me on this issue and do let me know if I miss out some informations
Sorry for bringing this post up, help is needed >.<
Or these video need to convert to suit in x10 spec to play smoothly?
