Clockwork Mod Recovery Replacement - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,,
I have an SGS2 and have problems with getting the SWM to mount the SD card to the PC, it is corrupted i think,
Where can I get a new CWM and how do I install it ?
Thanks
Ian

You can get into recovery itself though right? Just flash Siyah or something (make sure the kernel matches your framework i.e. GB or ICS). There quite a few if you look in the development forums.
Incidentally what kernel are you using? I can't mount my storage via recovery with CF-Root LP7 kernel, but i've tried it with other kernels again such as Siyah and it works fine.
I'm assuming you're rooted etc and on a custom rom or something?

The CWM file in my Infuse 4g is corrupt. When holding down volume up + volume down and pressing power button; CWM restore comes up but is garbled. I can not use it. Is there anyway to solve this? The phone is bricked.

Wrong forum. Try here (Report your OP & ask mods to move your thread to Infuse Q&A).

[Q] HELP!!! flashed CWM to my 2.3.5 Fascinate, now i cant get out of recovery

used oden to flash CWM. now i cant boot into android, it just keeps kicking me into CWM recovery.
anyone see this? any suggestions? would a wipe fix it?
did you flash a rom if so which one?
no ROMs, simply just tried flashing CWM via Odin
may i ask why 2.3.5?
what were you trying to do?
i am still able to get into Download mode to flash files via Odin, so i dont think all is lost. but, still just stuck in recovery. when i try to reboot it just takes me right back into recovery. i may have flashed an incorrect version of CWM which could be the cause of this problem. if that was the case, any ideas as to how i can get back into a proper boot?

I was trying to flash CWM so i could flash a custom ROM. Had this phone forever and was just looking to try out some ROMs out there.
As long as you odin cwm none of your os is really touched.
try the cwm 4 fixed for cm7. http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...2&d=1311907538
Now when you reboot your device the stock kernel will over right the cwm.
also make sure you put the odin file in the PDA section.
So basically flash the new cwm and try booting into normal that should get you back where you started from. 100% stock.
that link didnt work. tried searching for the thread without any luck
for some reason it truncated the link with a '...' and it thinks that is part of the hyperlink
dl.dropbox.com/u/14764513/cwm4_fixed_for_cm7-ODIN.tar <- cwm 4 fixed for cm7
thanks.. so i flashed this via odin. same problem. i start the phone. the samsung logo comes up. it disappears for a second. then it comes back up and kicks me into recovery.
weird right? any suggestions
ok then what is your endgame?
Now before you said you flashed just the CWM, may i ask why...if you did not intend to flash a rom? were you going to flash a Kernel or obtain root?
Perhaps you should try this
Download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278838
It is a custom kernel.
Now Flash CWM with odin
Put battery back in [dont touch power button yet]
Hold down BOTH volume and Power all at once * Dont let go until you see Samsung Logo.
[should still be plugged into pc via usb]
You will boot into CWM
using the volume up and down-Scroll down to Mounts and storage [select it by hitting the power button]
Then scroll to Mout USB storage
~now you should be able to see your SDCard as storage on your PC, put the Kernel some where on your SD Card~
[back on your phone Then Select Unmount
Scroll to ****Go bacK***** [select]
Scroll to install zip from sd card [select]
Select choose zip from sdcard
Navigate to where you have the zip
Select it
Scroll down to Yes-Flash........
Let the phone do its thing!
Good luck!
Your bootlooped...if you can get into cwm wipe all three and flash a rom thats compatible with the version of cwm you have installed. Or odin back to stock and start over...

thanks a bunch guys! happy holidays ill let you know if i succeed
This may sound dumb but
make sure you are NOT hitting "reboot recovery" and you ARE hitting "reboot system now"

[Q] Stuck on Boot Screen after attempted Kernel Install

Hello all. I have had Shostock3 for a while now and read that if you use the Siyah Kernel with it then it is an awesome combo. Well I downloaded the kernel and went to install it through CWM and now I have a big problem. I chose to reboot and install the kernel and when I did I am now STUCK at the screen that says "Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i9100" with the yellow triangle. I have let it just sit and see what it does but it goes no where. WHAT DO I DO?!?!?! HELP! Thanks all!
Samsung Galaxy S II i777
Running Shostock3
WAS running with default kernel that comes with Shostock3
EDIT: It doesn't seem that I can get into the recovery mode either. I am trying the volume button + power button combination and having no luck....

Hold power button plus volume up and volume down, keep it held in until you boot into recovery. Recovery won't just disappear, normally people just aren't holding them in long enough or are using the wrong button combo. Let us know if you get back up and running. Also make sure when installing the siyah kernel you're following the OP directions to the letter.

I can't get into recovery. I simply cant. I hold the buttons, correctly might I add, and then the logo appears, then goes away and I am left with nothing but a blank, black screen. The bottom buttons aren't even lit.
Possible hardware failure on your power button or one of your volume buttons I supposed. Have you tried flashing a siyah.tar file in odin to get a.different usable recovery?

If you could link me a Siyah kernel that is in a .tar format I would be appreciative.
Dude do as Phalanx says. Vol up+Vol down+ Power and even after the logo goes away dont release the buttons. Recovery will show up.

Either that or if you get adb up an running on your computer, hook up your phone via usb and type (this is for mac, may be slightly different for other os's):
adb root
adb reboot recovery
and voila! your phone boots up in recovery!
can't get past boot screen on siyah 5.0.1
I spent all the time I could thinking I had this but apparently I don't!
Have AT&T Samsung i777 running the latest stock 4.1.2 that I got from Kies.
Wanted to try my hand at custom roms.
Was able to root phone using flamaroot which gave me SU ability
Bought Mobile Odin pro, downloaded Siyah .tar file and put it on SD.
Flashed it with mobile Odin.
Because I'm an idiot, I was hoping to make a rom backup after flashing.
Now, it boots "Samsung" then the Siyah screen, then goes blank.
I can get into CWM recovery but without a backup rom to restore to I'm not sure what to do.
Also, can get into Download mode which reads:
ODIN MODE
Product Name: SGH-I777
Custom Binary Download: NO
Current Binary: Samsung Official
However, it reads downloading, but I do not believe there's anything to download and it's been like this for 20 minutes
ANY ideas on what I could or should do would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Where did you get the Siyah 5.0.1 in tar format? It sounds like you tried to flash a kernel that is not compiled for your phone. You need a kernel that is compiled specifically for the SGH-I777.
If that is the case, then you should be able to recover by flashing a good kernel using Odin, if you can find a tar version, or just flash the 4.1.2 stock firmware with Odin, which you can get from the Download Repository or from sammobile.com/firmware or Samsung-updates.com.
But first, since you can get into recovery, try performing a wipe data/factory reset to see what happens.

Thank you so much for helping me! First of all, I used your post, "Odin3 One-click Downloaders for Stock and Stock + Root" and was able to follow those steps to get me back to 2.3 and then I connected back to Kies to get back to stock 4.1.2. SO, I am completely back where I started a week ago, but I have a phone that works thanks to you!!
To answer your question: because I was using Mobile Odin, it only recognized .tar files and I found one on Siyah's blog (gokhanmoral) which was categorized under "sgs2 kernel".
So I'm back to the start (actually did the unrooted one so I don't even have it rooted currently). However, with all the reading I've been doing on this forum, I can't shake the desire to use a custom rom. I know I'm very much a noob and probably should make myself happy with my phone, but I wanna give it another try. I understand with my following questions if I'm posting in the wrong area and cannot have my questions answered.
Here's where I'm stuck. I know I need to make a custom recovery (cwm or twrp I'm not totally sure) before flashing a custom kernel and then rom. But I just can't figure out how to do it. When I go into recovery (holding volume buttons and power), there is not option for "backup and restore". How can I get a backup of my current rom so I can start with the other stuff?
The order as I understand it:
1. root phone
2. install cwm or twrp in order to create a backup of current rom
3. flash a custom kernel
4. flash a custom rom (that is compatible with kernel)
Thanks so much again for all your help!!

OK, glad your're back to working. The Siyah kernel you flashed is for the GT-I9100, the international version of the Galaxy s2. As I said, you will need a kernel that is compiled specifically for the SGH-I777, so get your kernel from the I777 Android Development Forum.
Next, you can also use a straight zImage file with Mobile Odin. You don't have to have a tar. You can even download a ClockworkMod flashable zip file and use an archiving tool such a Win Zip or 7Zip to open it and extract the zImage from it. Then use that to flash through Mobile Odin.
You currently have the stock 3e Recovery, which does not have a backup facility, nor the ability to flash custom firmware (unless it is signed by Samsung.) So you need to install a custom kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery (or TWRP Recovery will also work.) By the way, those are just different developers versions of almost exactly the same recovery functions, so it doesn't really matter which you use.
For a kernel, go to this post in the development section and download the third of four which is titled "AJK v2.0.5 NO-SWAP Samsung." As I said above, extract the zImage from the zip and use that to flash in Mobile Odin.
Also on this phone, recovery and the kernel are not separate, they are one unit, so you install the kernel to get the custom recovery. Your steps 2 and 3 are incorrect. Remove step 2 entirely. Step 3 will install both the kernel and the custom recovery. In step 4, you can flash any custom firmware you want. They all come with an included kernel, so it doesn't matter what kernel you start with because after you flash you will have a different kernel anyway.
And finally, don't worry about backing up the stock firmware. If you mess up the flash, or soft brick the phone, you can just reinstall stock as you did before. After you have a custom firmware installed, and have your phone configured exactly the way you want it, then is the time to make a backup, because you can flash to a different custom firmware to try it out, and if you don't like it, you can restore your backup and be back to exactly where you were.

Wow, excellent information and I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to help me out. My last question hopefully, and I don't mean to try your patience but what is the best way, would you recommend, to root my phone? I did it with flamaroot previously but it was temporary? Thanks!
Kurt
I have no experience with 4.1.2 and framaroot since I'm running Shostock3. No one who has used that method has said anything about it not being a permanent root. Why do you think it's not permanent?
I think it will be fine. Anyway after you root you're going to install a custom kernel followed immediately by a custom firmware which will be rooted. So even if it wasn't permanent it wouldn't matter.

First off, this forum is not for your phone, it is for the SGH-I777 AT&T Galaxy SII, so we don't know the specifics of your phone.
Following the above procedure will put your phone into download mode, where you can flash the firmware you linked.
Since you say you don't know how to use it, I am going to post a complete set of instructions for using Odin that I wrote some time ago. Bear in mind that this is for the I777, and you will have to adjust some things to make it work for your phone. Refer to the flashing instructions in the thread you linked.
How to use stand-alone Odin3 to flash firmware:
Follow and recheck each of the following steps. Do them in order listed, as some steps are dependent on previous steps. Instructions are for Odin3 v1.85. It should work with any version of Odin, but some details, like color of items, may be different.
1.) Open Odin on the Windows Desktop.
2.) 3.) 4.) Put your phone into download mode.
5.) In Odin, you should get the yellow box under where it says ID:COM with the text 0:[COMx], and in the Message area, <ID:0/00x> Added!! where x is some number, usually 1-8.
6.) In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked and all other items are not checked.
7.) Click on the PDA button. Browse to the tar file you want to install and select it so its path appears in the text edit box next to the button.
8.) Make sure the check box next to the PDA button is checked.
9.) Click the Start button.
10.) You should see the green progress bar advancing.
11.) When complete, you will get a PASS (or FAIL if unsuccessful).
If after the successful flash your phone does not boot into the firmware, then perform a hard reset. I don't know your phone, but normally you would boot into recovery and perform a wipe data/factory reset.

Need help with CM10.1

Hi,
I tried to flash the latest CM10.1 nightly on my rooted Galaxy S3 using ROM Manager (took the backup using ROM Manager first on my External SD Card), but now the phone is stuck on Cyanogenmod startup logo. I tried turning it off but it just loops back on again and goes to the logo. After pulling the battery, I tried to go to CWM by holding home + vol up + power but it turns on into CM instead. Odin recovery mode is still working after pulling the battery though ( vol down + home + power ). I'm doing this the first time so please answer the following questions:
1. Is the phone bricked for good?
2. If not, how can I go back to the backup I created before flashing if the phone wont even turn on or go to CWM?
Please answer in as much detail as possible as this is my first time flashing any room.
Thanks in advance!

Try going into CWM again by pressing Volume Up + Power + Home at the same time when booting. If you're successful, flash the Nandroid backup you made. If not, maybe you could flash the original stock Samsung Touchwiz ROM via Odin and then rooting and flashing CWM over again.

Thank you for the quick reply, it's not going into the CWM by pressing vol up + power + home. The phone just boots up into CM. How do I flash the original stock Touchwiz ROM via Odin? Can you provide a link?
Also, can anyone tell me where did I go wrong so I can avoid mistakes in the future?
Fixed it! Had to flash CWM again through Odin and then restored. Now, before I go ahead and make the same mistake again. Can anyone tell me where did I go wrong?

[Q] Cannot access Phiz recovery

Hello!
I have an i9100 that was rooted but collapsed with a custom rom.
I wanted to reflash the stock rom via Odin (XXLSJ). It worked but I was stuck with a boot loop.
I flashed a matching Philz recovery cwm6-xxlsj-oxx.4.31 via Odin but I cannot access it by pressing volume up + home + power button.
As a matter of fact I tried to flash other cwm versions and non of them would start by using the buttons...
I spent a lot of time looking for answer but haven't found any. I also tried to flash other custom roms via Odin but none of these work.
I would appreciate help a lot! I rooted some phones already but a detailed instruction would be preferable.
Thanks once again!
Find Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' guide stickied in the General section. Download the 3 part stock firmware linked in the thread, flash with Odin (this will wipe your phone). If you have problems with the flash, do the stuff suggested in the thread until you get a successful one. This will give you a 'clean slate'.
From there, you can re-root your thread & flash a custom rom/whatever. How ? Search. 'How to root' has been asked/answered thousands of times here over the past two years; one hint I'm giving you: Thread stickied near top of Q&A has simple root method (others in guides/tutorials stickied near top of General section). So far as flashing a given rom is concerned, flashing instructions are always on the first page of the thread devoted to the rom, and are clear/concise 99.9% of the time.
Best bit of advice I can give you - don't do anything to your phone until you understand what you're doing. Not doing so leads to busted phones. Take your time.

Thank you for the answer. However, I tried those.
I don't have any problem with the flashing of that ROM, it just wouldn't start. It is boot-looping.
I can flash the Siyah kernel via Odin, but I cannot enter CWM after that so I cannot perform that procedure.
Try this
Take out battery, hold vol up + home + power and put the battery back without releasing the buttons.

So now I am back on XXKH3. It would not start but I managed to root it like this:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-root-xxkh3-firmware-on-galaxy-s2-i9100-guide/
Now there is CWM but it says it cannot mount cache or sd card or nothing.
What can I do?
what are you trying to do?
You can try to format the internal sd card with a pc while booted to cwm.Backup all files important to you before formatting!
connect to a pc,in cwm mount usb storage and format.

So, now I have Dorimanx recovery. I can access it occasionnally.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2058683&highlight=pit
I checked the memory but it is okay.
I tried to format the internal memory but I could not do that nor via pc, neither via CWM.
That should be the solution I guess because anytime I want to install a new custom rom via CWM, there is an error message.
Any suggestion for this?
I would want to install any custom rom and use my phone. That is the goal.
So, I get these messages:
can't copy meta-inf/com/google/android/update-binary
I wanted to run CWM-SuperSU-v0.99 but I get the same that 'Read-only file system'.
What now?
copy the rom you want to flash to the external sd card and try to flash.
Also if that fails, try booting without external sd,maybe it's causing problems.

I figured I should try to reflash a stock rom, then DorimanX 8.43, then CWM-SuperSU and then flash a new rom.
I hope this will work because my inetrnal memory cannot be accessed from the mount USB storage mode in CWM
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app

You don't need to flash cwm supersu because dorimanx kernel is already pre-rooted.

Is my phone bricked or can someone help?

I followed this video to install Cyanogenmod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQdSOTdV06Q
during the install I got a red error stating there was some problem with the gapps zip. Now my phone gives a quick samsung flash and nothing else happens. If I hold power, home and volume up I can still get into the cyanogenmod screen with the option to install.
I downloaded the files again and tried installing. It got as far as flashing file 1 of 2 and the working bar keeps spinning and doesn't make anymore progress. The screen eventually went black and now I cant even get into the recovery screen. The screen flashed the samsung logo with small blue writing in the top left and then goes black again.
Please help...
Update - If I hold power, volume down and home I am able to get into the downloading screen.
Try to reflash cyanogen mod again but before that format you device completely by going to recovery mod!
Or try to download the cyanogen mod and gapps from xda thread or from somewhere else!
Before flashing any ROM, it is strongly recommended to completely format your device!
Hope it will help you

Since you can get into download mode and not into the recovery I would try to flash back to stock following the info in the sticky.
Thanks to the both of you for the help.

I found this but it is very vague
IF YOUR PHONE MATCHES OPTION 1 LOOK HERE!!
A soft brick is easily fixed in most cases, here is what you can do to fix your phone!
-Boot into Recovery (Vol Up + Home Button + Power Button) and wipe your data/cache/delvik cache and factory reset and start all over.
-If Recovery fails, try booting into Download Mode (Vol Down + Home Button + Power Button) and use Odin to get into stock firmware and start again.
(if youre using a Mac, Linux or Ubuntu Heimdall can be used to flash stock firmware)
-Also make sure the downloaded ROM/GApps are not corrupt when youre flashing. You can do this by checking the MD5.
-If youre getting a "STATUS 7" error, please update your recovery, or update your bootloader.
I also found this one that I will try an follow.

To confuse things a little, this phone is a telus phone that I had unlocked to use on Bell. I assume I reflash the telus firmware, am I correct?
Bro just download your phone's custum recovery .
Now go to Odin mod in your phone volume down, home, power.then select volume up.now connect your phone in to PC.
Now open Odin select PDA then browse custum recovery. And start button click.
I was able to get my original firmware back with odin.
Can someone link me to the current files for my phone so I don't screw this up again? Its a Telus i747m, which I believe falls under AT&T.
Thanks

Bro go to this site:http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Then create free account select your phone model and download latest firmware.
Then flash via Odin.
Best of luck.
I want to say thanks for all the replies.
I was able to sort out my problem and here is the solution.
I was trying to install the zip files from the micro sd and it was failing every time. I then tried the same sd card in a usb-otg cable and it worked perfectly.
It must have something to do with the built in sd reader.
