[Q] ICS 4.0.3 Root Kernel problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i upgraded my european GalaxyS II to Android 4.0.3 (ICS) and i want to root it.
The thing i was wondering was, what insecure kernel should i use? Or does the kernel even matter?
My current kernel is:3.0.15-I9100XWLP7
Thanks in advance!

Clockwork comes with cfroot.
Yes you can flash cm9 using cwm
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

By flashing an insecure kernel, you will get clockwork mod recovery boot menu.
You can flash cyanogen by finding the zip, full wipe (look up instructions, not sure if needed). Or just get a CM9 based rom like D4.

So no safe stable ICS Cyanogenmod yet?

Or
Or an aopk based rom like Hydrog3n

They dont want to release it as stable yet, but the nighlies i've tried are working really good. Check the q&a thread of cm9, theres not alot on the not working list.

Ive heard that if you use CF root you cant install rom manager, is this true?

I have no clue, but from what I understand it is not really necessary (you can already backup, restore, update within CWM) so why even bother with another app? Just my two cents.
Re cyanogen, I think pretty much everything is working except HDMI out. Nevertheless I highly recommend a rom based on CM9 or aokp as someone else said.

While this is true,i wouldn't try it to be honest.. Allot of phones were bricked using rom manager :/
Just sick to cwm recovery menu it has everything you may possibly need.

Is there a Galaxy s2 ICS rom which can be flashed using CWM?!

I have had problems with Odin for the last 2 days straight, where its not detecting my phone. I've been trying to flash ICS.
Is there an ICS rom available which can be flashed using CWM? this is the way i've been flashing rom's previously, is there an ICS rom which can be flashed this way?
I've only found ICS roms which need Odin so far
There are ICS custom roms flash via CWM and i would guess that Mobile Odin will flash stock ICS rom from the phone .

ClockworkMod. It is a custom recovery that lets you remove everything your phone came with, and let you install a different version of Android (called ROM). That can be a newer version than Samsung gives you, or a version without any of Samsung's apps and widgets.
It can also let you take a full backup of your phone.

I've been using CM9 for about a week now. The only thing not working is camera effects and making movies. Photos work.
I have had a bug where I can't turn on the phone from sleep mode 2 times, but it is solved bu pulling the battery. Not had that bug in the latest builds.
Download here:
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=galaxys2
I've found a changelog here: http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=galaxys2
I don't know if the chanelog is official, but looks like it works, so good enough for me

[SOLVED] Confusion with SiyahKernel

Ok I am really confused about this. So I just rooted my new Galaxy S II I got (the CF method using ODIN) and I was considering installing Cyanogenmod. However I changed my mind when I decided I could put a kernel on the stock instead. Now when I read thread for the kernel (as well as going to the website) it says it includes CWM touch Recovery with gesture support. Now does this mean when I flash the kernel with the recovery I got from rooting, it will also flash over the current recovery to the touch one? If I get OTA updates and apply them, will it remove the kernel and my root access? Also I am wondering has anyone had problems with this kernel?
Thanks for all the help.
Ainslie.
1) If you flash Siyah, it will overwrite/replace the current version of recovery you have, yes.
2) If you flash any stock firmware (including OTA updates), yes, of course you'll lose root. Any update will have a new stock kernel which will replace your existing kernel. If you do an update, you'll need to re-root your phone.
3) I've been using Siyah since about the 2nd week I got my phone (>8 mths) both Gingerbread & ICS and I've never had any major problems with it.
In saying that, obviously your experience with a given rom or kernel will not be exactly the same as someone else, because everyone has their phone setup differently/uses it differently.
So do a Nandroid backup in CWRecovery before you try Siyah, and if you don't like it, restore your backup. If you're going to use Siyah, I very much recommend you read the dev & discussion threads (certainly since Gokhan has been doing ICS builds at least). Any questions once you've installed it/started using it, ask them in the discussion thread (not the dev thread).
Ah cool thanks.
Also just one more questions.
When the new recovery is flashed with the ROM will the CF-ROOT custom CWM app work with it? Or will I have to download ClockworkMod from the Play Store?

Hi,
When u install siyah kernel, it includes the cwm app with the kernel. And the app is the same app you get in the cf- root kernel.
Siyah kernel is by far superior to cf-root. If you set it up right, you can get much better battery life. And it is so smooth. I would recommend that u use siyah..
Cheers

If you have siyah kernel installed, you can download an application from the play store called "extweaks"
If you open that you will find the option to under volt the cpu

Ps
And also, if you want really good battery life, go in to cwm recovery, go to "kernel specific options" and click on "battery optimised" that will set everything to get you the best battery life.

I also learned how to flash my first windows phone here at xda years ago by asking questions like this one. I'm sorry if your eyes sore when you see noob like me. And i'm asking for specific parameters like android ver 2.3.5 with speedrom . I can't find any posts that match like that one.

Just flash CM9 in CWM. It will also install CM9 ICS kernel so you're good to go. Maybe you'll need to flash another modem in case your GB modem doesnt work with ICS.
After that, I would recommend to flash Siyah kernel, but its up to you.
P.S. DO NOT EVER USE ROM MANAGER (it comes with CM9)

To install cm10 you need root access, go check cfroot by chain fire. Gapps is basically your Google now etc. With a custom recovery, just flash the cm10 and Gapps and you'll be good to go.
Stock kernel is subjective with very little difference. All kernels work for me so it's not so much of an issue deciding which is better.
The best rom is the one you try for yourself. Rom comparisons are not allowed on xda
Latest stock will be depending on whether you want android version 4. 1.1 or 4.0.4
Wrong section btw, should be posted in the q&a

Hey no problem! Yup, are you using jellybean? Have this issue too as Cwm is not optimised fully.
Just have to boot into recovery and everything would be working from there with no issues!!

You can safely ignore that error.
CWM in the apps drawer is the UI interface of the CWM recovery (accessed by pressing the Vol Up+Home+Power when booting up). CWM recovery works without a hitch.

All options are there when you boot into recovery, it is just the app that is incompatible, meaning a couple of the options won't work directly from the app....you need to boot into recovery to do those things.....don't worry, it's all there.
I personally prefer the older recovery as it doesn't use the blob method of backing up. And I'm used to the old way!

rom advice (wifes phone)

this is my wifes phone (I have a Note) I want to know what rom I can go to that is very stable , prefer ics :
Samsung SGH-I777
2.3.6
I777UCKK6
2.3.35.14
GINGERBREAD.UCKK6
sorry but I dont generally mess with her phone , she does have root and cwm touch 5.5.0.4 . There seems to be a wifi problem it turns on and then off , never sticking , I suppose wiping all might help , I hate seeming naive but when I mess with my own phone its all a chance , I dont want to just do that with hers!
There are a lot of stable roms. Do you want touchwiz based or AOSP based? I don't have an opinion on AOSP roms because I've barely used any of them.
For Samsung based roms, Shoman94's roms are very stable and popular. That's what I use as my daily driver. For ICS, use SHOstock2, but for the latest JB use SHOstock3.

When you flash a new ROM you will have to wipe. Also that's caused by using a foreign kernel aka one from galaxys2root.com

If I remember correctly, I think that version of the Siyah kernel was put out by zedomax on GalaxyS2Root website. That kernel combined with UCKK6 was always a problem. In fact, that package was always a problem.
Anyway, the kernel has ClockworkMod Recovery. You should decide on a good rom, as discussed above, download the zip file and use usb to transfer it to the sdcard on the phone, then boot into recovery, perform a wipe data/factory reset, and flash the rom. It doesn't matter that you are on Gingerbread right now. You can flash either an ICS or JellyBean rom because the package will contain the complete system and kernel and modem, everything.
---------- Post added at 07:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:08 PM ----------
Enter recovery by holding down all three of vol + vol - and power buttons continuously until it boots into recovery. If it won't boot into recovery, then it might be a bad flash.
Thank you, I got the siyah kernel from a thread here, when I first got the phone (off ebay )it did in fact have the wrong kernel,I used entropy flash back to get back,I guess I did something else, but I will use one of the roms you mentioned ,glad we have you here ,I've been messing with wp7 the last few years and finally getting back to android (cept been playing with boot loaders in a500)

It is exactly that, a counter, and the only purpose of it as far as we know is warranty protection, so I would say no, it's not important. On the other hand, most folks don't like the splash screen with the yellow triangle, but you can remove that easily enough if you still get it on boot.
