Screen Went Out - HTC Amaze 4G

This is so crappy. The other day I turned my screen on and it got bright . Then all of a sudden it got very dim . And has stayed that way since . I'm guessing its a hardware issue because it even stays dim on startup at the HTC screen . Flashed new Rom and everything... Flashing a Rom was the hardest part because you can't turn up screen brightness in recovery .... Good theng I have insurance . Any of you guys experienced this on previous phones ?

I had a customer with a sensation have the same problem. We factory reset the device and the screen was still dim. A soft reset by pulling out the battery and holding down the power button while the screen was off magically fixed it. Maybe that will work for you.

no go man :/ . But i talked to customer service and once i told the guy on the phone that my phone flickered then went out . He said oh that is a automatic replacement. Guess its a bad hardware problem.

well hopefully if you send this in under warranty, they dont say anything bout your s-off. I have been curious about the whole s-off thing vs. htc warranty, since you are using a slight hardware mod to achieve it?YEs I know it's not a true mod but HTC could claim since you touched the physical phone and altered the state of via physical means your warranty is void.
Maybe you should make sure the creen CANT come back on lol.
I was gonna sugest maybe now we have someone who can use the screen removal tutorial and see how well it goes!
Hopefully to mo doesnt say ..."oh hia...no im sorry we are out of the amaze(cough)...would you like a one s instead???"

With all the drama in this forum i wouldnt mind lol . But the new one should be here on tuesday. Ill just look to see ways to get S-On and flash the stock RUU. Can they actually tell you touched the physical piece with a bread bag wire. I doubt it lol.

How can I bootloop my phone?

I need to get this phone in a bootloop.
How can I do it?
I need to return the phone to the Sprint store because of light leakage but they said 'that's not sufficient reason for a return' so I need to bootloop it. Help me out guys, please?

^^^ That should do it.
Have fin finding one without it I would say over 90% have it
If you don't have an Evo3d well ...
just flash multiple roms without clearing caches and dalvik.... should bootloop for ya
That's bull. Tell them its a hardware defect and means the screen is improperly sealed.
That's a fine reason to take it back.

I also have this problem that when I go into teamwin recovery my search button has a dim light on it while all the other buttons are not lit on. I'm talking about the capacitive buttons at the bottom.
Do you think If I show a sprint employee that screen it will raise a flag or are they too stupid to know?
Also, I was thinking of just flashing a ROM and midway through the 1st boot I just battery pull. Does that sound like it would loop me?

If you don't have an Evo3d well ...
I have seen many threads asking how to get OUT of a bootloop, but NEVER have I seen one trying to get INTO a bootloop. lmao. So you're going to get yourself into a bootloop, and take it in rooted, with S-off and all? I wonder how well that will go over. They'll be like,"oh look, it has a software problem because it's bootlooping. Oh look at that, this thing has S-off and super user installed, guess no software warranty on this thing.". The reason I say you'd be taking it in with S-off and super user is because you'd need that to flash something to get you stuck in a bootloop....and if you unrooted it and turned it back to s on before you brought it in, that would mean you had to run an RUU, which would at the same time fix the bootloops! LOL Just demand they replace it for the light leakage, rather than intentionally trying to make it bootloop. That is the funniest **** I've seen all day!

That light over your search button is light leakage. The other buttons are supposed to be off while you're in recovery. Just deal with it. I have that problem and many other people do as well.
I don't know why you're so worried about light leakage. It really isn't a big deal. There is no point in taking your phone back for this. You're just screwing the rest of us in the long run.
It's not just light leakage. Ever since I took the OTA I get random reboots, even tho I'm using SupraROM. I'm within my 30 days, they have to give me a new one.i just tell them that doing the OTA the battery died.
Take a leak on your phone. Lightly.

[Q] Issue with backlight

Hi all,
I am a proud owner of HTC Amaze, running BulletProof ROM with Faux Kernel v08.
The issue I am experiencing is most probably hardware issue, but I still hope it is not.
My backlight does not work at all. The phone works fine, and under heavy light you can see the actual screen, and can operate the phone as usual, but of course, otherwise, the phone is unusable, since you cannot see anything.
I've tried factory reset, restored to previous backup, charged it till full, left it without battery for few hours, nothing helped. Backlight is simply not there.
Soft buttons have the backlight, but not the screen.
There is a chance that it could be a battery issue (caused by phone), since it is my second battery, original one just died one day and refused to be charged. I got a new battery under warranty.
But even with a new battery it's been acting wierd. Random restarts after which the battery indicator would show red explanation mark. Had to take out the battery and reboot for it to work normal again.
It might be that my phone is defective and just kills batteries.
But in case of the backlight, the battery still charges normally (at least the indicators shows that it does).
Any idea what is going on with my phone? Had anyone experienced something similar? Could it be caused by software? Are there any hard reset options I can try?
And second question, if I will have to go to warranty, is there a way to relock the bootloader? And, I am sure I could find it, but if anyone has it handy, could you link me to a place where I can get the original WIND ROM and original Kernel?
What do you think are my chances of the warranty being granted?

Well i am sorry to say i cant tell you whats wrong, but i can answer one of your questions. Yes, you can relock the bootloader, but it says "relocked". But if it is a hardware problem, being unlocked or relocked shouldnt matter, they should still warranty it for you.. if it is in fact a hardware issue that is..

If you plan on sending in for warranty, there's no harm in using the ruu to go back to stock and seeing if in fact it is something with the software

I was just thinking the same thing. but he had mentioned he didnt kno where to get the original wind rom from. But ya, definately go back to stock and see what happens. If ur still having the problem, then i would bet its safe to say that is a problem with the phone not something you did.
As for the shipped Wind Mobile rom, you can find the RUU here:

There is also a link in that thread to show you how to "relock" you bootloader.

Well, finding WIND RUU wasn't a challenge at all . Thanks for the link anyways.
Never thought I would have to go back to that creature again.
I will give it a try. Also one of my work buddies has the same phone, so I'll swap batteries with him to eliminate another potential issue.
Even though we have the same phones and the same provider, he always jokes around by saying that I have a crappy phone (our old tradition, back from the time we had different phones). Well at last he might be correct

Well, it's not like it fries it instantaneously, it takes time and effort from my phone to do it
So if I'll insert it for few second to see if my backlight will come back, battery won't die, and I'll I know what's wrong with my phone, and that there is no point of me getting the third battery, since the same fate will be awaiting it.
In any case, if return to stock won't help, warranty is the only option, which is sad

bottom 2 mm of phone not working right??

the bottom 2 mm of my sprint evo 3d is not working right. by that, i mean that its sorta uncalibrated. my phone is rooted and it was normal until yesterday. now, if i put my finger on the bottom to mms of the screen then it claims it to be higher that it is.
for example, the dev options gives me a screen pointer overlay option and if i have my phone on the very bottom possible it says its at 888.5 on the Y. my finger trace is followed but higher.
thats a really bad explanation so ill try using a picture from paint

haha thanks
my photoshop trial ended a month ago so im making due on paint for this
but i think im just gunna take it in to sprint... i already flashed an ruu and unrooted and got s-on... on the bright-side hopefully ill get a new phone!
same thing happened to my phone. took it to a sprint repair store they told me to come bak in 2 hrs i did and they replaced my phone with a refurb. unfortunatly my refurb is also borked and will restart whenever i connect to wifi. anyways best of luck to u =)
uh oh. i hope i dont get one of those... i never turn wifi off! :O
i plan on re-rooting or rooting whatever phone i get, so hope its not messed up and is in good condition...
you think theyll give me a refurbed white one if i ask?
They originally told me that they didn't have any refurbs at the store and would have to order one but theymagically found one...
I called sprint and complained and they helped me out with a loop hole to get a new phone a year ahead of time and I got the s3. I wasn't dealing with any more crap phones from them even tho they say they r HTC certified

Sending it for repair

Hi,
I searched this topic and got a couple of hits but I have a couple of specific questions about this.
My phone is rooted and S-OFF (and everthing else it says in my sig) I been having problems for quite some time now and I'm so fed up with this phone (and losing faith in HTC just because of it) that I even considered melting it with my oxiacetilene torch.
So before having another one of those episodes I think I'd like to try to send it to HTC to see if they can repair it.
I bought it from Negri Electronics and I'm using it in central america so I don't think I have any waranty cover.
My question is do I need to revert it to stock before I send it or they would look at it if I send it as is now?
Is there any type of warranty for me?
What should I do? (Just in case, my phone suffers of a severe black screen issue that it does not go away even with stock RUU)
Sometimes I need to press the power button like 20 times to get the screen on ( this is the thread on my problem) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2067514&highlight=black+screen
I'm pretty sure it has to be HW related because it used to work ok but one day started acting out (got corrupted after a complete battery drain) and since that day it never worked well again. I tried different roms and none of them make it go away not even in stock ruu.
Thanks for any info
Jose (the developer of some of the aokp and cm roms) has added a flash able for allowing the camera button to wake the screen.. Try that first.. Read up..
Also tmobile ics wakes on camera press
Sig:
What do you mean I can't say that??!!.. It's the fkin Internet!
Thanks, the NRG rom does that too but I get the same result just capacitive lights coming on (and only half of them the other half have gone bad)
I think I'll revert to stock and give them a call to see what they say and if they can give me a quote for the repair.
Finally today my screen died completely.
The phone works but the screen is dead, I sent an email to HTC we'll see if they can quote me for the repair and if it's worth the trouble.
The only problem is that my phone is S-Off and unlocked so I don't know if they will repair it.:fingers-crossed:
After talking with CS they told me that changing the screen would cost $145 but if they need to change the whole MB it would go up to $340 so I just decided not to do it and risk buying one in fleabay, we'll see how this one works out.

but anyway to answer your question I put that in my signature sometime ago (even before they started calling it HTC ONE when it was just a rumor of a phone), at that time I thought my problem was software related and not the screen agonizing, and anyway it seems like HTC seems to be the lesser of two evils.
I've had HTC phones for the last 6 years or so and I don't know where to go, I keep reading about Samsungs and the new experias but I always come back to what I know.
That's the reason I got this second cheap Amaze to hopefully last me another year and by then have a more clear view of how things moved with HTC and the market in general before I puke another $800+ in a phone.
I was waiting for the S4 anouncement but I'm not impressed with the specs, lots of nice gadgets but they are not good for what I'm looking in a phone.
Sony Experia... I know nothing of Sony phones, I'm reading as much as I can to learn about them, development availability and other factors
WOOHOO!!!!! I'm back online!!!!!
After the death of my Amaze I bought another one on the bay (cheaper than sending mine to HTC to get it repaired) and I just got it.
After going through the whole unlocking/rooting s-off, and other tweaks Ifinally got a phone again.
I was getting sick of the Moto razr V3 I was using.

[Q] Broken screen already

So I'm sending in my phone already to get the screen fixed, which broke by some weird accident. But I have unlocked, rooted and all that jazz. I know HTC is going to wipe my phone when they get it, but do you think I'd have any issue because I have modified the recovery? I restored back to the stock rom with nothing installed except SuperSU. I could understand if I had a problem with the hardware in the phone itself, but they should have no reason not to fix my broken screen which has nothing to do with firmware or unlocking. I've already reset the phone myself which has no personal information. I haven't even set up my google account on it.
I think reports have been mixed on whether HTC honors the screen replacement warranty on modded phones (bootloader unlocked, etc). Return the device to as close to stock as possible, and hope for the best is probably all you can do.
One person on here has mentioned that while the "regular" device warranty mentions that modding the phone may void the warranty; the "add-on" screen replacement warranty does not make any mention of this. So that may be an point of argument in your favor.
I will HOPE as hard as I can. Might have to shell out $200 at the local repair shop. It would bother me though if it was rejected and all I want fixed is the screen, they have no buisness messing with my phone other than testing to make sure the screen works.
HTC will fix the screen either way, the warranty question just determines whether they charge you or not. I think the charge is $250 if the warranty is not honored. So not much more than your local shop is going to charge. Plus, I think taking the phone apart is tricky, so I'd probably trust HTC to do it more than a local vendor. I've seen some real hack jobs on the One X (which is polycarbonate not metal, but similarly difficult to disassemble) by random repair shops. Although of course the quality of workmanship by repair shops will vary, and I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out there.
HTC is refusing to replace my screen even though I flashed the stock ATT RUU back on the device. They claim that they can't test the Screen panel after it's been replaced because "security is off" on the device. I called them out on it and they have been going back and forth with the engineering department and repairs and still claim that because the security is off they can't replace the screen because they can't test it. But if I pay $290 they'll replace the main board as well. I even had to agree to try a partial repair and still no.
isn't the diagnostic tool a dialer pad code they enter?
I been on hold for 45minutes now waiting to talk to someone...

any update on what happened bro?
i heard that if you tell them the screen was cracked due to physical damage and clearly no software installed on the phone had any impact on the screen cracking they would fix it... im currently on a fuzz not sure what to do, i cracked my screen earlier today =(
Just a word of advice and I know everyone is different but I always wait until my devices are out of warranty before I do any modding. That's just me because I don't have the time to deal with the stuff you're going through. Anyway this is the first devise that I’ve not wanted to start modding right after I got it. Yes, it’s that good IMO.
Good luck I hope you get it resolved without too much expense.

still refused to fix it, they refused to give me a credible answer just that because security was disabled from the device they couldn't do it.
I would say make sure you enable S-Off and are back to an offical Rom, that might improve your chances of getting it partially repaired.
I flat out told them, I didn't like their lack of transparency and would be putting the phone on craigslist and buying any other device that wasn't HTC.
a bit petty but made me feel better.
Just to chime in here and share my experience. My display became messed up either through being damaged internally, or having the data cable come loose, etc. No cracks or any visible external damage at all. Anyway, phone was unlocked, rooted, running a custom ROM, and S-Off. Since the phone was less than six months old I shipped it back to HTC for replacement under warranty. Before I shipped the original I returned it to stock via RUU and re-locked the bootloader, but left it S-Off. HTC has just shipped me back a replacement without any hassle at all. Total cost to me was $19 for expedited shipping. I should point out that other than the ugly display my phone was functional - touch screen and all. But it does seem from my experience that HTC will still honor the warranty on modified devices if the failure is clearly hardware related, as mine was. BTW, I unlocked through HTC, so they could have checked if they wanted to.
I might try resetting security and sending it back again. I did a rather half added job last time. I was worried about the replacement option because that might have generated a charge to my credit card. Did you have to put a credit card on hold?

So, I received my phone back yesterday, and couldn't help but notice a huge crack going from top to bottom of the phone. This crack wasn't there before , Originally the screen had been badly scratched. I tried to open a ticket again to replace, and they say that due to "negligent use" (Bootloader unlocked/Security OFF) my phone is now fully out of warranty. I told them this is ridiculous, I'm not asking for a new phone; I just want my screen repaired under HTC Advantage, and need this escalated. Hoping to get a call from a manager today. I'm very unhappy with HTC.
This seems like a magnuson moss act violation. Thoughts?

I did not have to put a credit card on hold because I shipped them my device first and have just done without for a week or so. I think you only have to make a credit card deposit if they ship you a device first.

More discussion about the screen warranty here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2767547&page=14
Of particular interest is Post #139, which says the HTC rep claims S-off prevents access to the video calibration tool (sounds kinda made-up to me). Then later in Post #146, HTC appears to backpedal a bit, and offer the free replacement if the customer agrees to take "full responsibility" if there are issues with the motherboard later.
Thought I was going to have to use HTC Advantage today when I dropped my phone on my hardwood floor. It landed perfect on the screen and made an awful smacking sound. I just sat there in disbelief scared to pick it up. When I did everything was A-OK.
Hope you get this straighten out. Good luck.
