Hi guys
I tried to root my cousins sgs2, i tried the odin method where you flash the cf-root kernel which is the same as the one which your phone is already running, but it keeps failing :S hes on ics through kies, his kernel version is [email protected] 151 #3. model number is GT-I9100 and the android version is 4.0.3.
like i said this did not work, its the official Tmobile UK ICS update i think, and it kept failing. i then tried the root method without kernel it flashed CWM but it kept resetting every time i tried to choose 'flash zip from internal sd card' :S
i would say im pretty experiened with android rooting, ive owned a t mobile pulse, SGS1, and ive also flashed my friends HTC DesireHD all successfully
Anyone have any suggestions? or could i downgrade his firmware back to gingerbread then root that way?
thanks
When you say resetting, what does that mean.
Because when you get that touch cwm, you have to flash the busy box installer, and after that you are rooted. But you don't have cwm left for further use.

Why dont you use superoneclick? I used it and it worked and its easier.

Hi thanks for the responses guys. To clarify a little bit o attempted the cf kernel method via odin bit it kept failing even.with both varieties of the correct kernel. I then attempted to do the recovery mode root whereby i flashed CWM which worked but when i scrolled down to flash a zip sd the power button would not select the.option. And every 3-5 seconds the CWM would return back to the start screen of CWM recovery in a loop every 3-5 seconds, so i was unable to flash superuser and busybox
The final option i believe is to try superoneclick but apparently it does not work for ics :/

its noted that on both LPB kernels there are problems .
In which case i would try LP7 .
Or flash a different Samsung stock rom to LPB .

i would say im pretty experiened with android rooting!
The way you're trying to root your cousins phone using CWM & SU.zip is just fine, "BUT" the reason your power button isn't selecting your zip files from your sd -card & keeps resettling CWM, is because that particular temporary CWM recovery is "TOUCH" & not BUTTON control! Try using your finger on the screen to select stuff rather than the volume & power bottons! & lastly, don't forget to put your CWM.zip & SU.zip files on an External SD-CARD & not your internal, otherwise CWM won't see them on your internal & it won't work

Strange that you cannot access recovery. It should work. However, as a last resort you can flash a stock build using ODIN and then wipe data off
just flash cf root and recovery again should reinstate it with Odin, then you won't lose anything hopefully

I should have said that everytime when I boot up my phone it goes into a black screen. Unless I go into download mode, which in my case still works. So I just flash a stock rom using odin?
Flashing a stock Rom will fix it too, but back everything up as you will lose it all, but if you were rooted then just flash the cf root in Odin, that will give you your recovery image back (remember on the s3 recovery image is separate to kernel)

I think all you need to do (if you haven't solved it yet) is to get into recovery mode by pushing volume up + home + power, is a common issue after flashing... once you get there, perform a wipe cache, and wipe/factory reset, and you should good to go

This is because you flashed a wrong kernel for your phone.
# Quick question:
Is your phone on Gingerbread, Android 2.3.x or ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich), Android 4.0.x?
# If your phone is on ICS, then download and flash this kernel via Odin: www.gokhanmoral.com/public/files/siyahkernel/v3.0/Siyah-v3.5.2.tar

Thanks for that.
I have the I9100BVLPH stock ROM from T-Mobile UK on my phone so I downloaded the correct Chain Fire kernel (CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPH-v5.2-CWM5.tar) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 and this caused the phone not to boot.
Thanks for the link to Siyah, I used the v4.1.5 kernel and it worked great.
Hello there.
I'm in a bit of a trouble so I need some help. I've bought an S2 for my wife from a guy (in Ireland).
The phone was locked on Vodafone so I tried to root it maybe I'll be lucky to unlock it with out paying nothing. So, the phone is on Gingerbread with a BUKJ3 kernel. I've downloaded last night a CF root but by mistake I took a KG3 instead of KJ3. After flashing with Odin 1.85 I got stuck on the boot screen with the yellow triangle.
This morning I've downloaded another kernel as in KJ3 flashed with Odin, the phone is starting but no network coverage, I tried with different Sim cards but nothing so I went in recovery mode and wipe/format data, system, dalvik and cache as factory reset as well. Since that moment the phone won't boot, it gets stuck on the boot screen and yellow triangle.
I can go in recovery mode and download mode with no problem but I can't make it start.
I reflashed the kernel, I don't know what to do and tomorrow is my wife's birthday and I was trying to surprise her with a nice phone but instead looks like she is gonna get a brick ( I hope not)
Thank you guys for any help.

Thank you for the reply. I don't mean any disrespect but for the last 3 hours I'm looking over kernels and forum and my brain is really wired now maybe.
I've had a look at sammobile but I can't find what you've recommended. A more specific link will be more than helpful.
Thank you very much anyway. If I'm getting advises it means I didn't bricked the phone so I might be able to fix it.
Once again thank you.
You just go to sammobile, then register, then firmware and files, then put the info in the 4 fields
eg
Smartphone
Android
Gt-i9100
Then uk/ire XEU (or vodafone or whatever..but unbranded better)
Then youll see a list about firmware version and their release date
Eg
Lpt 4.0.4 ics jul 2012
Lp7 4.0.3 ics apr 2012
So download lp7 4.0.3 and flash with odin.
Then use the rooting guide in my sig
Then do the other things I said.

People contact Odia when theres a problem with their efs folder/no backup.
But you should have a backup and a nand backup.
I had the same problem yesterday and I restored efs folder/restored nand backup.....which got it back.
So try that or theres a thread about "restore imei in 9 easy steps".

I know I was stupid enough not to read before flashing, but now it too late to think about that.
the thing is I've never used a galaxy phone until these days and I wasn't aware of all this things and I don't know how to restore this NAND backup IF I have one, as I didn't make any backup before flushing. I hope I'll get some help from somebody and as I've said, a nice donation will be on the way to the helper.
Try GSII repair app.But you have to be rooted.
First, I apologize for starting a new thread on this subject.:fingers-crossed:
I just bought my Galaxy S II and I wanna root it,but I'm a little unsure about the whole process.
I also got a VYL00M emmc chip, which is vulnerable,but I'm on 4.0.3 i9100BVLPB.
Here are my thoughts and my questions :
If I flash via ODIN the coresponding CF-root kernel.
But then do I need to flash Syiah kernel through the CWM that comes with CF kernel so I can safely wipe and avoid brickbug?
I hope someone can provide a little aditional information and guide me through the process:angel:

Like i said earlier, you are safe from the brick bug because you are running 4.0.3 firmware.
The brick bug only affects 4.0.4 firmware.
2.
To ROOT your device only, you don't need to flash any kernel.

I have the same phone details as the OP. a UK T-mobile running ICS 4.0.3 i9100 BVLPD
I rooted my phone the other day by the simple method in link above... BUT isn't this method of rooting limited ?
I would like to root my phone fully using an insecure kernel & Odin but i dont know where to get the correct kernel for my phone, i need an insecure & original secure kernel to do this right ?
Sorry for my nuwbness questions.
Peace
What are you talking about "limited" and "fully".Its either rooted or it aint.
That method doesnt give you CWM,if thats what you mean. You can just flash a custom kernel that contains CWM if you want.
Isn't exynos abuse the faster way to get rooted?

Ok, my bad, i am a nubie after all . i thought i'd read somewhere that this method was limited in some way.
But now you've confused me a lil more, the thread (also in ur sig) says it does have CWM
Rooting
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted

Am i again mistaken ?
Anyway i did it the other day & have SU, downloaded T-backup and am now reading\researching on how to make full back up b4 i try a rom.
Peace
owaiga from
Cool, I made a back up in what i think is CWM and it put a 1.4GB folder on my sd-card.
Am i right in thinking i could mess up my phone, reset it or delete progs & mess with setting ...THEN as long as i can boot to recovery & CMW & load the back up it would return it back to how it is now ?
Peace
That is temporary cwm-not permanent. If you rebooted after flashing the 2 files......it launches stock recovery.
Anyway when your rooted/got permanent cwm you should be backing up your efs and doing a nand backup.
Then start pissing about with roms.

Thx theunderling
I see now... so i DO need to get permanent CWM ? I'd need to flash an insecure kernel for that right (i have one ready)
Dont yet know what efs is (ill read up on it) and nand back up ? i just been doing a lil reading on that and thought the back up i'd done is the same thing, they were calling it Nandroid back up, is that different ?
Peace
Just flash Siyah kernel in ODIN and then you will have root and CWM. Its that simple. No need for anything else at all.
I dont understand why we always have all this crap and unnecessary files/steps etc.
Connect phone to PC.
Reboot phone into download mode.
Load up ODIN.
Flash Siyah kernel.
Thats its, Once done you will have new kernel, cwm recovery, rooted system, SU, and also CWM app installed.
If you want new rom simply reboot into stock, wipe data and flash rom you want, You dont have to worry about cwm again as all custom kernels come with recovery.
Yeah I missed your other post saying you had done the nand backup as I was in the middle of writing my reply when you posted yours.
Could do with a little advise. I have rooted in the past, most recently my HTC desire. I used to flash roms all the time.
Anyway I have decided to root my s2 and I am having problems. I root view odien and everything goes fine but when it reboots everything is the same and have no root access? any ideas?
If it helps I did the manual ics update a while back, don't know if that has anything to do with it?
Thanks

You're not really explaining the steps you took to root. Flashing a CF-Root kernel through Odin would usually do the job if you want to maintain stock ROM. Otherwise, flashing a custom ROM would also give you root access as most ROMs come with it built in.
I strongly suggest you explain further what steps you took to flash. Because root view odien doesn't say much and is quite confusing.

Hello I am also new to rooting,
I did my first SGS2 rooting following Chainfire's instruction in his thread and it goes OK.
Have been rooting 2 more devices since then...
Please describe your current firmware and the steps you had taken..
I have done the above tutorial and I still have the same problem? Its very strange!

What did you do? You flashed CF-root and you still don't get root access? Really? Please discribe all steps you followed, then it will be easier for us to help you. Most important information you didn't provide is on what rom are you. Regards

You should know by now to post the details about your phone.
I could say flash siyah-s2-v4.1.5 via odin(which gives root/perm cwm and safe kernel).
But I wont til you post the details.....

It has always been my preference to root through a custom kernel... If you do decide to go this way, download siyah v4.1.5 and flash it through the PDA section of odin.
Also, as theunderling said, please post your phone details before flashing.
Flashing this kernel will grant you root + permanent CWM
My phone is on 4.0.3. Kernel XXLPQ. so can I just flash a custom ROM and it will root my phone. Its not like it used to be with my htc desire.
This is the tutorial I followed btw http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-i9100-icsandroid-4-0/

Do as theunderling and poroto mentioned. Download the TAR version of siyah v4.1.5 from www.gokhanmoral.com and install it via Odin the same way as mentioned in the tutorial link you posted. (Instead of cf-root, use siyah) Do this and you will have root. Then you can flash a custom ROM.
good luck.

If you followed this tutorial you are already rooted on 4.0.3. If you want to upgrade to 4.0.4 I recommend to flash a stock 4.0.4 via odin then Cf-root (or other prerooted) kernel to have root, custom CWM recovery and be safe from brick bug. Then flash desired custom rom. Yes, custom roms come usually with root.

I haven't mate. I downloaded root checker and it says I don't have it.
No you don't. Flash the TAR ( NOT zip.) version of siyah or dorimanx kernel via Odin. You don't need CWM for this. Once you install one of these custom kernels you will have root and CWM and can then install a ROM and whatever else you want via CWM.

Ok thanks mate.
It won't let me download the tar?
Sorted it going to flash the resurrection remix ROM. Says on galaxys2 root.com that its probably the best ROM you can run on this phone. Is this true?

Everything depends on what you expect from a rom. If you look at a picture in my sig you notice that I expect someting different.

Theunderling is not so much patient for new members
It happens everytime you flash custom software to your phone via PC odin.
Use Triangle Away app from Google Play store to remove it. However read carefully the app instructions before you use it.

OK thanks everyone for your help.
