Unlocking - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

With the cornerstone roms showing up and possibly nvflash on the way, it seems like it is a good time to be unlocked.
I have a bcokas from bb.com, except a little screen tearing my prime has been pretty...well... prime.
To the topic i'd like discuss... post unlock, anyone having hardware issues? If so, how early on in the ownership of your prime did this happen? I am attempting to gather information on hardware failures after a 'break-in' period so to speak.
I hope that makes sense....
Thanks to all

I have a bcokas too, which has been unlocked for over 3 months. I have had no hardware issues so far thankfully. Even though I bought Squaretrade I do realize that I have taken a bit of a risk. But screw it: I got my Prime for fun, not work and I've been enjoying messing with roms.
Btw I think Eos is the better cornerstone rom. It is far more stable

I wish I would have thought about Square Trade before my 3 month window was up...
I am really worried that a few days after I unlock my camera will die or I will do something dumb and get a nice unrecoverable brick. I would be kicking myself hard, but I guess all things considered... it's a risk. ASUS says it best: "It is strongly advised that you avoid activating this App unless you fully understand and accept the risks that may arise."
Anyone else have any input? Any reasons that swayed you one way or the other?
Thanks a ton all

[outdated]Spare Parts have arrived at service centers

Thought I might as well open a new thread 'cause everybody should have access to the good news easily:
Gary Key stated in his unofficial thread that spare parts are shipped to the service centers around the world:
The spare parts have arrived at service center in Switzerland. In my case it is a new mobo. The technician just called back and told me he would repair and test the tablet this afternoon.
Still missing mine since 120207
You might give me a thanks if this info makes you happy!
Update 120315:
To me it seems the mobo is the fix we all have been waiting for. It got replaced with my Prime which failed the final test at the repaircenter. My wifi-thing is wrecked, so they ordered a new one. This means: they got my device five weeks ago and they knew already from Asus there would be a new mobo released in the future so they assumed my trashy wifi (bad receiption, bluetoothlag and finaly unable to connect to my home router) was related to the faulty mobo design. Be sure it is, unfortunately my wifi is crap as well. I guess they found out after they'd assembled and reassenbled the tablet - lol -
The service center is contacting ASUS now after I complained mildly for being pushed aside during more than a month.
Well, that's why I hate frigging computers they all suck!!!!
Hopefully I can keep you updated otherwise I just got sick of it and my androidexperiment will have died.
Nokia N9 Meego ist the best, no frigging buttons just plain swipe. but this is another sad story ...
Zcech Rep. service centre? Or where?
What was the issue you RMAed it for?
I RMA'd mine to Czech, sent it friday morning:
Picked up Friday morning
Arrived in Manchester Friday evening
Arrived in Germany on the Sat Morning
Left Germany 3am this morning (Monday)
Arrived in Austria at 6am
Arrived in Czech at 8am
Return to shipper at 9:46am
Does this literally mean, they got mine, and have either:
1. just sent it straight back to me or
2. just sent me a brand new one and will deal with my old one later on
Any ideas?
@kevinm2k
Depends where you getting that tracking info, if its from couriers site it looks like it didn't get to service centre and for some reason being returned to sender
I went through the official return system with UPS, the tracking is from UPS here:
http://wwwapps.ups.com/WebTracking/...ns=yes&loc=en_GB&tracknum=1Z7634WR9390800355#
If I get the same one back unfixed then I won't be giving them another chance to RMA it and will demand a full refund - so hopefully that isn't the case!
So just wondering since I've sent Gary 3 different pm's weeks apart with no response what so ever... if our bootloaders are unlocked do we still get the fix? Or are we just screwed?

When you unlocked your bootloader, you agreed to invalidate your warranty and to no longer receive any support from ASUS. I don't quite understand why you are asking this question.

You agreed to Asus not working on your Prime. It was a permanent decision as stated in the agreement you made with them by unlocking the bootloader.

This is exactly why I haven't unlocked yet. If there's new components or motherboards to be swapped out, I'd rather get that done first. Then have my fun unlocking and flashing roms. But it gives me time to let the roms mature more and build confidence in decision of unlocking and the consequences involved. I'm in no rush really. Stock rom working great for me. Plus with root(which I can easily remove if I want) and overclocking @ 1.6Ghz, I'm enjoying the very fast n slick stock experience.

Thank you, I don't understand why people who read the terms, and still decided to go ahead and unlock the device anyway, then want start a thread/post complaining that it's not fair. This is one of the reasons why Asus didnt want to unlock the bootloader to begin with, because no matter how you explain it to people, they still don't seem to be able to comprehend. Gary probably wont respond, because it was clearly stated that you VOID ALL updates/help
First off no one cried it wasn't fair. I understand the difference between not providing additional support and not fixing a pre existing well known initial design flaw. Do you guys?
Edit: just thought I would add, the first two messages sent to Gary were BEFORE I unlocked.

I agree you wasn't crying about it. I'd still give it a shot to see if they fix device. Hopefully they would show discretion and make it on a case by case decision on whether to fix or not. Just like places like best buy n Gamestop said they wouldn't take returns past due date, alot have been doing so. MAYBE ASUS will let some people slide also.
But we do have a mini epidemic of people, not you, blindly unlocking device(thinking its part of rooting..lol) and not realizing consequences involved. Like no more OTA updates and warranty voided.

I don't get it.
Everywhere dealing with the unlocker including itself says what it does and what it's for. Amazes me people just jump in like that.
Once we start seeing results I may send mine in. Every day that goes by it gets harder not to go on and install my own antenna lol

I am pretty sure that "returned to shipper" shows up in this case because the UPS label was created by Asus, so UPS "thinks" it was returned to the shipper.
It shows that it was signed for, so they do have it.

Yeah I hear ya. Seems like you can't say anything in these forums without getting flammed one way or another. I do completely understand that by unlocking my bootloader that I have no more support from Asus. That's why I've done research on how to flash and also why I have an account here so if I really screw something up I can ask someone much smarter than myself how to fix it =)
That is also why I bought a square trade accidental warranty so if I burn my cpu by flashing some of the awesome custom overclocked kernels, ill be covered.
I do however have the expectation that my wifi works to at least a similar level of my cell phone. I am not naive and I don't expect it to go toe to toe with my laptop but definitely similar range and throughput of my other mobile devices.
If Asus is making actual hardware changes because of a manufacture defect, I expect to get those very same changes.

how long after purchase can you get squaretrade for prime? but yeah its only fair if it was a manufacturing defect. I would think Asus should let unlocked people slide on that. maybe Gary can clear that up. not sure he will though because it would have to be worded correctly so not to be improperly used against Asus since alot of legal stuff around that. its a fair question to ask though. if you haven't already, you should ask in his new thread. you could could send another pm but I know his pm box is swamped with pm's.
at least with squaretrade you could always find a reason to send it in and get a replacement unit. which will either come with new components or be eligible for warranty since its not unlocked.
we have to remember this though. Gary did state that the new component pieces was only going to be implemented on a device by device basis. so basically only if their testing shows it to be faulty, will that device qualify for new component piece. its not like every device sent in will get it. as not all devices will qualify if they already meet Asus factory spec from new testing.
plus we not sure of what this "Great Prime News" coming up is.
I believe 90 days after purchase if bought retail. Don't quote me though as this is my first one. Bought mine with the amazon deal, I figured I've dropped it twice before and got away with just minor scratches but one of these times it will be broken gorilla glass lol.

Hey, my apologies if I came off rude benefit14snake, your question was indeed a valid one. It's just that I've seen so many post from people complaining about not being able to update after unlocking their tablets. Asus should fix ALL devices that have weak wifi, or they will end up losing customers in the long run.

If it's 90 even I could still get SquareTrade

If Not Asus Eee Pad, Then what?

I did some research before I bought the TF201 and i believed the prime is the best andriod tablet on the market. Just to buy it and find out it has all these issues.
The most resent one for me is the Camera having the green scrambled screen. This company has really let me down so my question is...is there any better tablet out there? Is there any better company excluding apple lol i hate them.
I know the TF700 is coming out but i thought i was reading something today that said it has problems too, i only hope that was my imagination. Anyways what do you guys think? The TF201 has great specs but im really disappointed with the quality and build. Is there something better out there?
I have no idea what you are talking about. My Prime has been nothing but fantastic...Maybe you are thinking of an Acer tablet perhaps?

No im not thinking of acer. I am talking ASUS Transformer Prime TF201. I have new one and it has some issues. The worse being the green camera...for me at least. Im glad you have a good tablet i guess i wish i was as lucky as you. But check this q&a section you will see people are complaining about their camera.
I have no problems with my Prime as well. It hardly ever leaves my side. There's a link on my signature of the Positive Transformer Prime thread.. I suggest reading that thread as well. Negative threads unfortunately over populate our forum which is normal.. People mostly come here not only to gain more knowledge and better there experience with there devices but to solve there own issues... not to praise it. But majority of owners are quite happy with there purchases.
Edit: The next update should hopefully fix the issue you are having with the camera. Honestly I've had several kinds of tablets and they all have there issues... Along with the issues you are having with the green screen on your camera. I had that on my galaxy tab 10.1 and experienced it also with my Acer A500.. Firmware updates fixed them right up.

I read the positive forum before i bought my tab. It really helped me make my decision. Like i said the tab has great spec, the tegra and all that..but has very bad build and quality like common i spent over 500 for this device and in less than a month the camera stops working now i have to do RMA for another month. Its just all so disappointing.
I would wait to RMA it until after this up coming update. It may very well fix your issue. It should be any day now.
Edit: I feel for you but just because you spent 500 bucks doesn't mean its going to be perfect. Maybe in a perfect world yes. All the different tablets I've ever owned have had some form of issue. Sorry to say paying a premium isn't going to exempt you from SW/HW issues.

all I have to say is, how did you read that the TF-700 aka infinity pad has some problems also. lmfao. its not even released yet. not even tech sites have gotten their hands on it to review. only possible problems would be the 4g version. it will use the S4 chip, which is in very short supply right now due to manufacturing issues. so it will likely be delayed.
p.s. My Prime works great also. if yours have a cam issue then RMA it or exchange it.

I understand what you mean about things not having to be perfect. I just felt like maybe since it's that expensive, it should have certain things that have no flaws e.g. the screen...i would think that there shouldn't be any dead pixels?...like some things should have some standards? But i totally understand it can't be perfect.
In spite of some of the replies here the Prime is plagued with problems. It's true that you will hear from more people with issues on forums about a product than those who are satisfied. But the shear number of complaints in regards to the Prime on several forums indicate to me that it is indeed a device with design flaws and quality control issues. Even in interviews ASUS representatives have said that the metal back cover cause signal issues. I believe many of those who claim no wifi issues never use their Prime far enough from a router to realize how weak the range is. I am presently at a hotel with wifi. My smartphone and my wife's smartphone get great wifi connection. I gave up watching videos on my Prime because its constantly buffering. This is my 3rd Prime. All have had basically the same signal issues. Others have been through more than 3 Primes. Some have found one OK enough to stick with after trying several. For someone to say you must be talking about an Acer and not an ASUS is ridiculous considering even ASUS has admitted there is a design flaw. They all have the same metal back. If it wasn't an issue why would ASUS change the design on the back cover of the TF700 to include a plastic cover over the antenna? Why not continue with the pretty all metal cover if it did not cause any issues? And besides the signal issues there are other issues that ASUS is trying to resolve with upcoming firmware updates. You are right to be concerned with ASUS not Acer as one has suggested you must own.

I completely agree with you and i respect the opinions of the people who have commented here. My main concern though is that: is there something better?
Personaly there issnt better unless you go for appel. And I dont know if its really any better.
I have over 300 yards range on my TP wifi.(open space). 0 gps signal but then the dongle works so im ok with that.. I'm just finished watching a 1080p mkv file over wifi with no buffering or any hickups. And I'm a good 20yard from the ap,
And no matter what you pick, it doesnt have a battery powered clip on keyboard with full size usb, SDcard reader and many more
The prime IS the best android tablet on the market atm.. sadly some have issues..
I think 80% of the faulty TP owners are on this forum. I have spoke to many TP owners and noone have issues, and thought I was the only one with a faulty gps.

[Q] Where have all the ROM Devs and Asus updates gone?

Kinda wondering whether I should sell this tablet and replace it with something newer. Asus hasn't put out any new updates and the only good ROM dev is jumping ship.
Anyone know if we are going to continue to see updates or custom roms for this thing or is it time to move on already?
In Custom ROM land, IMHO often varies based on the developers. For example dev on my phone's ROM has slowed because the most active dev bought a new One X.
ASUS wise, expect to be first or third in line for updates for a while more.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah... I mean, I haven't compared this dev section to other tablets, but it seriously seems lacking. Everything is ASOP kang builds which all seem to have problems. I like the Wook ROM, but that dev is going to a different tablet. And ASUS hasn't released anything since .28. Pretty weak.
that's one of the primary reasons i'm so frustrated about my tf201. i mean seriously? GPS problems to the extent it's virtually non exiustent, Wifi isn't that good...and in europe/ germany in my case, you don't even got the option to bring it back to where you bought it to exchange it like the bestbuy trick alot of the folks here are using.
My Serial Number for getting the GPS-Dongle wasn't working until yesterday so officially the time to get a free dongle is over.seriously wtf asus...
I'm not sure about other devs but currently my computer is down (has been for a while) so the my prime is the only thing I have. Once I get a new computer I will continue working on things for the prime.

.28 just came out on June 13th and you find it "Pretty weak" that there have been no updates since then? I'm curios what devices you have that get updated more often than the TFP? I'ts my experience that this device gets updated more frequently than pretty much anything out there. Anyway I doubt anyone wants to bother much with another 4.0.x update now with 4.1 just around the corner.
Why would you post this. We want more developers and people to buy the tablet but when they see all these posts about it having bad support and just people degrading it they won't buy it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
They were never here.
I don't think it's a matter of where have the dev's all gone, they were really given an opportunity to jump on the boat.
With all the hardware issues and locked bootloader I doubt many would get on board now.
I'm also sad to see that AndroWook has been discontinued.
I am hopeful that JB breath new life into the tablet though, fingers crossed.
edit: The fact that the community had to devise a method for using nvflash speaks volumes about how useless ASUS is.

The prime is dead

Just one year after, the Prime development is dead. Two roms have been updated a month ago and much appreciated work on them. But that's about it. What was once the tablet of the future, Asus made it a flop, A $500 flop at that. How poor, I'll never buy another Asus tablet or PC again. I had mine since day one and have no problems with. I wish everyone could say that.
Thank you for your contribution. We definitely needed another one of these threads.
Long live the Prime!

This is not true. lilstevie and tux_mind are VERY close to perfecting an Ubuntu dual boot. Think about it, Volume Up to boot Android; Volume Down to boot Ubuntu. That would be the coolest thing in the history of things. This is what I have been waiting for since 2008. Sooo... STFU.
Prime is dead
Mine truly is----at ASUS RMA facility for the third time since purchase
first 2 times wif-bluetooth issue in shop for 1.5 months
this time green camera
Truly a 500$ 650 if you count the dock peice of c***
There are very few primes around in my country so i don't care if its dead, i have a special device and its working perfectly.
But i think my next tablet (i hope the prime works for a long time) will be one with a digitizer for pens. Like the galaxy note 10.1. In my situation i prefer that over a keyboard.
Long live the prime.
I've had mine since day one. Never had reason to complain about it at all. Two friends have bought them after seeing mine. Still use it every day. I wish I had two.

I think that the Development is very slow mostly because around a 50% of users have their Bootloader locked, so lots of people couldn't use other roms, kernels or mods (and of course if a user wants to start a develop and has it's Prime locked, simply he can't).
I bought the tf201 a month ago because I didn't know anything about Bootloader, I thought that I could flash a kernel for OC or something similar. I try to unlock and I couldn't, and now I'm happy with it, because my tf201 died a week ago. When it returns from the RMA, I'll try to sell it. That's all, and this is the last ASUS tablet I'll buy.

Let me help you out a little, jordache. I'm quite happy with my Prime. I've not had problems with it. I have several Wireless APs at my home, so it's saturated with signal. As a result, I've not had problems with the wifi. I've chosen not to Root or Unlock my Prime, so I've not had the headaches there that others have had. As the features go (HDMI, Micro-SD, SD, USB, additional battery in keyboard dock), the Prime is top notch. I'd still take it over an iPad any day of the week.
Having said all of that, Asus's post-sale hardware support is terrible. So terrible that I probably won't buy another Asus product. I managed to lose a couple of rubber feet on the dock. When I inquired about getting some replacement feet, Asus wanted me to do an RMA on the dock. I'm not impressed.

Sure, they have every right to like bananas, but it isn't helpful, it's attention-seeking and is essentially pointless.
Go eat bananas if you like them. No one cares.

I find it interesting as to how much people are influenced by the opinions and experiences of others. In one breath you say you'll never buy another Asus tablet again and in the next you say you've had your Prime for over a year and have had no problems with it.

That is correct because my bluetooth sucks, my wireless sucks and should be much better than it is. No other issues besides that. I was just stating a fact that there is not much development for the tablet anymore. That's all I was saying, take it the way you wish but we are all allowed opinions here. thank you
The truth of the matter IMO is that people have come to expect too much. It's the "where's my update" syndrome where people want something new ever other week. Things evolve so fast that yes, a one year old device is practically ancient history. And Asus supported this device for much longer and through many more updates than most other manufacturers do. Take my Motorola Droid 3....please! Seriously my Droid 3 was abandoned by Motorola almost as soon as it was released. My original Droid Came with Android 2.0 then it got 2.1 and 2.2 from Motorola and then 2.3.7 via Cyanogen Mod 7.2 but once on 2.x, always on 2.x. On the other hand on the Prime we went from 3.x to 4.0 to 4.1 and will probably see 4.2 which is really not bad at all. It should also be capable of running future versions of custom ROMs....if the developers keep working on it. But really we have to expect that they will eventually move on too. But these days a year is almost an eternity for a mobile device.

Yes and another no brain response. I was just stating a fact.. don't like tough sh*t. I love my Prime, if I didn't I would have sold it long ago for something better. I was just stating that development has slowed down to a halt.. nothing to do with bananas !. Gezzzz

I don't see it so much as slowing down, more like we have got to the limits of what we can achieve with what we have.
When 4.2 arrives I'm sure you will see some more dev work going on and also there is cyanogenmod which updates nightly if you really want to update regularly.
There is only so much you can do based on the stock rom.

So lets get this straight, you "love" your Prime but you will not be buying another Asus product again. Can you please explain?

WOW - This place is D-E-A-D

Title says it all. Guess it's time to look for a new device (Tegra 4???) then unlock and root my Prime. I still love my Prime, always have, always will.
It's not as loud as it used to be for sure.
Check out the TF300, TF700 forums too because a lot of stuff that applies to that also works on TF201.

Just a series of posts by folks that needlessly brick their TPs.
Post something new and interesting? We've had like ten primedeath threads... Still a capable device. Wait till we have nvflash again!

Like I said, I love my Prime. I'm just a little worried that the Dev's have abandoned it. I've rooted many devices in the past but it seems the Prime is very susceptible to bricking and I really don't want to do that. I’ve never bricked and of my devices and I don’t want to start with my $500 tablet. This is why I haven't tried to root yet. I hope we get 4.2 and an exploit can be found se we can root without unlocking. I guess I'll eventually unlock but I'd like to root first and I'm too am waiting on nvflash.:good:

Ya, with two kids and a full time job I really have time to sit down and learn code. Some may have that kind of time, not me. My slate is full.
Thanks for your "help".

Guess that kinda stuff can't be helped, Asus did leave a bad taste in the mouths of tf201 owners... *sigh*
Well, at the moment I use my Prime only for Netflix. After getting Nexus 4 I have not used Prime for couch surfing because it is so laggy for web browsing. Just checking for news about 4.2 update from time to time.
If I ever again buy a mobile device from Asus, it will be 10" Transformer Nexus.

I love my Prime! What's to be bitter about? It's the thinnest 10 inch tablet ever made. I don't have my wifi modem 7 miles away from my device and I don't mount a tablet as a GPS device in my car (why would anyone), so every thing is nice!

First things first, I dont believe you care if devs abandon the prime or not since you have already stated that you are unwilling to unlock your prime because you are afraid that you dont have the skill not to break it. What you want is for somebody to post an apk to root your prime with no effort to learn on your part. This is all fine, to each his own.
One place you wont find the primes devs is here complaining in the general section of this forum because nothing productive happens here. Over in the development section of this forum you will find devs hard at work porting 4.2, getting Ubuntu running, and porting paranoid android etc. I am glad this section of the forum is dying because it means most of the complainers and trolls have left for browner pastures.
Do yourself a favor, unlock your prime and go check out the cool new stuff for the prime over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1414
Dead? Au contraire, I visit the forums on a daily basis, I just don't feel the need to write pointless posts or start hopeless threads.
People like OP are why devs will abandon a device

Except it's virtually unusable without an unlock and custom kernel/ROM flash. And no, voiding our warranty by unlocking is not a viable workaround for crappy internals and poor Asus coding.
Otherwise, battery life is poor, wifi is awful beyond about a room away (and I have a top of the line $170 Asus RT-N66U router) to the point that I can't even use it to stream video to my TV in the bedroom (my galaxy S3 picks up wifi at 90% speed in the same place, vs the Asus at 10%), and GPS is non-functional (dongle doesn't count). Don't get me wrong, it is a workable device, but it's far from a good one. Thinness does not make up for it's very real shortcomings.

No. Devs abandon a device when people stop using it and the manufacturer stops supporting it. I doubt anyone actually gets butthurt because random internet posters are complaining. And the TF201 had a small user base to begin with.

And, just check out the developer area. There are at least two brand new ROM's there (Androwook 2.0 and the latest Energy) released even while this "dead" discussion was going on. These new ROMs bring the prime up the the very latest Android Version. Does not seem dead at all to me.

Perhaps you got a better device than some of us. In any case, I'm happy you've had good luck with yours, but many of us have significant issues with ours, especially the early adopters. Unfortunately, there is no fix for any of the issues I've described with mine.
Does anyone else around here feel that if they had the devices people are talking negatively about, you'd be just fine? Am I alone?
