One of my main applications is to use my phone as a GPS in the car. Screen readability in bright conditions is therefore key. Popular wisdom is that AMOLED screens, whilst offering better contrast than LCD, are dimmer. This could be a deal breaker for me with the S3, especially as one of the comments in one of the launch video blogs mentioned a 'no so bright screen'.
How have others found AMOLED screens of the type used used in the S3 in bright conditions?
amoled does have lesser brightness ,have seen in on my sgs2 but its clearly readable and usable in direct sunlight
and also if you see the brighntess test values from gsmarena sgs3 has better brightness than sgs2 , so it should not be a problem

All I could find was this
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_iii-review-757p2.php
@100% brightness SII = 330 cd/m2, SII = 362 cd/m2, so it looks like the SIII is worse unless I misread something. Looks like HTC One X is king in this respect, but will have to wait for GSMarena sunlight legibility test

oops i meant g nexus and not s2, one x is lcd so it will have the brightness
LCD screens do have more brightness because they have a dedicated backlight which is always on and of course produces more brightness than the self-light-emitting subpixels of an AMOLED screen.
but the sunlight readability is not 1 to 1 derived from the maximum brightness
Galaxy Nexus had a very dim screen i hated it... i hope s3 will have a better screen because it has some changes in the pentile matrix + White, cd/m2 330(100% brightness) and gnex has: 247 White, cd/m2
i had galaxy nexus and galaxy s 3 neither of them bright galaxy s3 slightly betteri think ips screen much better

Hi,
I was wondering if someone who has the S2 and has had or spent some time with an iPhone 4 can comment on how clear the screen/text is when reading web pages etc.
I have a Nexus One and the resolution is horrible compared to the iPhone 4.
Does the RGB vs Pentile make a big difference?
I don't have the galaxy yet, but yes text will look much sharper. The nexus one had the pentile pixel layout, new galaxy does not.
Just play with the inspire or thunderbolt. They have same size large screen with same proper pixel layout as the new galaxy s, but it will also have amoled ad well. Best of both worlds.
much much better than sgs pentile but it suffers from heavy aliasing on web pages.i did notice this as soon as i got the phone even engadget points this out. the screen is great but the text on web pages are not as sharp as i'd like them to be(i did take into consideration that iphone's ips display has higher res).i wish some dev's could start on fixing this I'd more than happy to buy them a few beers.
the screen over all is great.heck its the best out there.
I wonder why it would have worse aliasing than the nexus one or first galaxy s, since they have pentile pixels. This has higher resolution, more pixels, yet has an aliasing issue. Very strange, and disappointing...

Probably just a bug in Samsung's browser, it'll be fixed eventually.
maybe try opera or dolphin HD and see.
I wonder if the screen on the galaxy s ii will look the same as the galaxy s with voodoo color.
Super Amoled Plus = Super Amoled w/ voodoo color?
I hope supercurio cooks come kernels for this phone!
It will look better cause the galaxy s2 has physically more pixels than the super amoled.
Got an SGS2 last week and need to say I was quite deluded by text clarity. Not only does not compare to Iphone of gf (miles away) but it is even worse than Xperia Arc. I notice the aliasing on most letters not only in browser (stock or otherwise, tried several) but also on Gmail and Kindle, basically anywhere that there is a strong contrast between font color and background (ie black on white or viceversa). I'm not sure if the phone is victim of its own features like super contrast that makes jaggies more visible or there is a problem with my handset. Would appreciate if other people having the SGS2 and another phone (not pentile matrix based ofc) could report their experience.

not 100% but i believe so. The RGB has a 50% increase in sub-pixels which basically gives the appearance of having a higher resolution/ppi. (at least that's what I've been led to believe)
I was just standing outiside and noticed that I couldn't read the screen of my new Galaxy S2 which I never noticed on my Nexus S. So I compared the two in direct sunlight.
Isn't the sAMOLED+ supposed to be brighter than the original sAMOLED screen?
Is my screen less bright than other sAMOLED+ screens?
My Galaxy S 2 is definatly brighter in sunlight than my Nexus S.
although i have turned off my auto brightness and whacked it right up on both..
At brightness zero the nexus s is brighter than the galaxy s 2.
I noticed that in bright sunlight, I can't see the screen at all on my SGSG2 with it set to zero, which causes a bit of a problem upping the brightness! On the Nexus, I could see well enough to change it.
I think at full brightness though, the SGS2 is brighter. My retinas haven't recovered from accidentally setting 100% whilst reading at night.
I've been wondering whether there is a way to boost the brightness, I was going to make a topic about it.
Some reviews I've seen say they had to turn the screen down to lowest brightness as the screen is so bright, etc. however my screen is nothing special in terms of brightness really and I have it on full, with auto adjust off colours are good though.

yes, I did that. the pictures are taken with both screens on 100%
I guess my screen is just not as bright as others :/
Also, under Settings -> Display, make sure that "Auto Adjust Screen power" is disabled... this option tries to save some battery by lowering the brightness when the image displayed is brighter : It can be useful in movies but it's just useless and annoying when you're browsing or reading.
PS : And SuperAMOLED+ is not supposed to be brighter than sAMOLED, it's the same without the pentile matrix. When samsung announced an improvement in battery life and brightness they were still comparing it to LCD screens from a few years ago.
thanks bluescreenjunkie, that setting actually helped (a bit).
and yes, your probably right about samsungs claims as well, I probably subconsciously interpreted samsungs claims the best way possible ... (so I had a reason to go buy it).
thanks for your input.
well it is possible to increase the brightness but it takes some development, like supercurrio did for the 2.3.3 kernel for the nexus s and cm7 sgs1 kernel with the voodoo app.
Dont know if hes gonna do the same for the sgs2, i really like it on my sgs1 for sure.
he increased the brightness? well that explaines it then (as it's running a voodoo kernel) .
Hi,
Concerned that the SIII's max brightness is much dimmer than competing phones. Iphone 4, 4s, HTC One x, are all about 500 nits.
The SIII's is only around 330.
Is this an issue?
I do like bright screens, and I suspect that the dominant reason for the battery life being better on the SIII is simply that the screen isn't as bright.
Thanks

Yes, the colour contrast makes the phone brighter than original, due to the Amoled screen. You won't really notice a difference unless you compare them side by side in a dark room.
Man i can't look at the screen at full brightness it's too bright and only use when outside in sun. Normally keep it half or slightly more. However i found auto to be not too effective as it makes screen too dim.

With CM/AOKP you can change the auto values so its not too dim
Keep it Classy, Cali.

Really? I use cm. How can I change that?
I think so.
I looked at a report that the S3 actually has a lower screen brightness then the S1!
"The Galaxy S3 uses a 1280 X 720, PenTile AMOLED screen, which is higher resolution, but dimmer than the Galaxy S1 and Galaxy S2 screens, Soneira said. The culprit seems to be power management: in trying to get decent battery life with its huge 4.8-inch display, Samsung had to turn the brightness down.
Power consumption figures bear that out. Samsung cut maximum display power from 2.1 watts on the Galaxy S2 to 1.3 watts on the Galaxy S3, dropping maximum brightness from 289 candelas per square meter to 224. The lower power usage, however, lets the S3 get solid battery life even with the larger screen: running time with the display on increased from 4.4 hours on the Galaxy S2 to 5.6 hours on the S3."
Qoute from a website ^
is there anyway to actually make the screen more visable? Like brighter? Its really annoying have this great phone and My older, LG 2X P990 has a brighter screen!
Thanks guys! Jack -
While I can't help you make it brighter, it's probably worth considering that display lifetime is probably also an important trade-off made by Samsung.
Even at the existing brightness, there are already some people complaining about display "burn-in" etc.
I would predict that any further increase in brightness would greatly increase the problems of burn-in and wear-out.
(Reason being that perception of brightness isn't linear, i.e. doubling the display power wouldn't make it look anywhere near twice as bright, yet would cause a dramatic increase in pixel fatigue and reduction in life)

What is really annoying, it is the hypochondria of the users. They are buying phone, they are happy with it, but then, they have the REPORT.
It may state that S3 is slower than nokia 1100 (if dropped out from a jet plane because S3 is more flat and will glide).
It may state that S2 is fir with tiny screen compared to iSomething (to iPad, to be precise).
Not to mention that it may state that the battery is crappy compared to the Han Solo's communicator he used in Star Wars.
Jack, please take my advice:
first, sell your crappy S3.
secondly, please READ the reports, DIGG forums, and please: choose the phone which will make you happy.
last but not least: BUY only this device which you'll want, do NOT listen to your mum.
Well, outdoors, especially in bright sunlight, the GS3 screen is in deed too dim.
Maximum brightness is around 330 cd which is far less than the best LCDs offer these days. Those LCDs are bordering on 600 cd which is a massive advantage. Due to this, my next phone will one sporting a top-notch LCD. AMOLED has fallen behind the curve IMO.

On maximum brightness the screen is more than enough really..
Just turn auto off and enjoy lovely colors, actual blacks and good brightness.

OLED doesn't need 600 nits of brightness. In fact, I don't even think that OLED should be measured that way because LCD's use a backlight which means it will win any brightness test easily. Just look at this picture for example.
http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=...q55UP-BG4GsiALEw4CgBA&ved=0CDMQ9QEwBg&dur=208
It shows that AMOLED can produce the same brightness as an LCD measuring about 100 less candela.
brand new S3 t999l here, perfect indoors, unusable in sunlight or overcast. For indoors use only, if no mod or fix to make the display brighter.
Hey guys I was thinking of upgrading the the galaxy s5, but specification wise, is it the same max brightness as the S3 ??
I mean, I really have a problem in the s3 being too dim even at maximum brightness when outdoors in the sun, so is the S5 specification wise, have the same max brightness as the s3 and face this problem?
Are u sure that opx is true black amoled??
What if I say you ... that ..It has a backlight ..
Wanna verify?
Important: make sure u have brightness slider to near low levels. This backlight is not seen at high brightness levels.
Download a gallery like quickpic that lets u open a picture in Fullscreen mode so that picture fills entire screen.
Make a bmp image in ms paint in windows and fill it with perfect black. Or download from some website with hex value coding -enter zero for all numbers
Now load this picture in quickpic or any other Fullscreen gallery.
Switch off every light in ur room .make d room jet dark
Wait a few seconds for your eyes to adapt to darkness
U will see the backlight instead of black.
For more easy recognition see in peripheral field of vision, where low light vision is good. (Focus point of eye doesn't have low light vision ,am a doc.) (see somewhere else, bring in the phone into vision filed)
If u think the gallery is d problem.
Do this same thing in any other amoled phone. You will know the meaning of black.
(I did in Moto x ghost )
It's not a backlight. No AMOLED screen uses a backlight. That would defeat the whole purpose of AMOLED.
What happens is, even if the pixels are black (switched off), they are fed a tiny amount of voltage from the motherboard to allow quick switching of colors so they are never completely turned off. As a result, even when displaying black they emit a very faint glow.
I'm not sure if this only happens on pentile displays (like the one in the OPX and most Samsung phones) and I can't verify since the only AMOLED devices I own are pentile, but my Galaxy S3 Neo also has this "problem". Personally I wouldn't worry too much about it, since even with the glow the blacks are WAY deeper than any LCD display with a backlight can produce.

Thank God man.
I thought my phone is fake display.
Ur reply is proof that knowledge helps..
Btw just curious.. what are you?? How do you know this information not available in internet... So nice to see you man.
And regarding ur doubt, whether this happens in non pentile array amoled ...
NO.
I own a RGB amoled -Moto x ghost phone. It doesn't happen there.
I will check in moto x droid turbo . My cousin has it. So I will do and post results here.
And I wish to add this :
A 312 ppi RGB amoled (I have moto x ghost, 720p, 4.7 inch) is way better much much better than 440 ppi pentile amoled ( I have opx, full HD 5inch)
If I compare the images, they are much cleaner and sharper than opx . It's like the image has a depth, there is some stillness kind of feel. ...( I use colour control kcal, and so I test the displays in many settings not just default.
For example to make the images look similar as moto x ghost so that we can compare, I use rgb values as 32, 30, 27 value at 123, contrast at 121 and then slide the brightness slider to 3/4 or more.
Now both images look same in terms of how much dark areas are visible , the white wash noted in opx is now gone.
Now the images are ready for comparision.
Now the difference is the sharpness or clarity in rgb amoled. The feel difference i get is that there is depth in RGB. Its has a grip.
