Sorry for the probably dumb question, but I have a G2X now with CM9 ICS and it rocks. I need some money and have to decide whether to sell the Amaze or G2X.
I really love the device features of the Amaze, but am really bummed out with the HTC has approached to development of it.
I believe the devs need a kernal source to get the radios working and everything working correctly.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk 2
didnt they do it with out source code on the defy?
If we had a good kernel dev who was willing to put a week into making an aosp ics kernel, it'd be done.
Our only kernel dev is busy.
The Rom devs who are working on porting it are fine untill they hit the part when they need to start editing and hacking away at the kernel. Their basically just flying blind.

Honestly, just like we did for S-OFF, if we can get a pool together, for someone to work on a Kernel, we will attract many devs.
Hell it might just give Max Krivonos more incentive to finish his CM9
If devs won't come to the device willingly, we'll shove some money down their throat and force them to [email protected]!
well i just cant decide what i want to keep.
CM9/ICS on this G2X is just SICK, if it just had the 1gb of ram this decision would be so much easier.
The Amaze wins!

What? You have both G2X and Amaze and contemplating about which to keep? To me, I obviously keep the Amaze and customize it to be better than the CM9. I had a G2X for a week and exchanged it to the Amaze and never looked back. The G2X felt way too cheapy for my taste.
I still keep my old G2 (not the returned G2X) and upgrade it, whenever I feel like to, to the latest CM9 nightlies for a fun of it. But I just think the Amaze with ICS is much better in every aspect. Heck, customized GB on the Amaze was not bad at all, either. So I am not even sure whether I would flash CM9 when/if it is available for the Amaze.
Probably you should list what features you like about CM9 here and have people suggest how to get it on the Amaze.
true, but CM9 ICS on the GX2 is VERY SLICK

If the phone hardware and features isn't important to you I can sell you my old vibrant- it has a smooth cm9.. but I think you'd be overlooking what are the most important features to most people in phones. Sure, CM9 is great, but people don't typically buy phones for cm9. There are devs working on these things, but you must think it is a much simpler process than it actually is.. I'm making a nandroid of my setup right now so I can help mess with either getting cm9 fixed, or miui ported, or something to give us better than stock.. but you should know as well as I do, it is likely that just as you sell the amaze it will happen - or soon after.
It will happen, you just have to be patient.. or you can just keep the inferior phone and regret it later.
I do not think it is simple at all, or it would already be done.
I wasnt sure if it was a matter of time on the dev's part or if we were still hoping HTC would release stuff to even make it possible.
I have no problem waiting, but since I dont know much about developing, I wasnt sure if it would even happen since HTC are stingy bastards
I'm becoming a lot more experienced with kernels I am making some progress but slow goes the boat

In order for me to purchase another device it has to be rooted with s off already accomplished. I love the mt4g way to much right now.
Nah, even if it was rooted. Even though the specs are a little bit better than the Sensation I'd still rather get the Sensation because all of the good devs already jumped to the Sensation.
I'd be surprised if a lot of devs went to the Amaze. Probably going to be a similar situation with the SGS4G when all of the devs were already on the Vibrant, no point in getting the SGS4G.
Good phone though, just wish that's what HTC did with the Sensation. The 1GB of RAM and better camera is nice.
Nope. The specs are all that. I'd need more to make me jump to a new phone.
ill prolly pick it up, but not when it first comes out. i love my phone but id like to have something with a little bigger screen and soft keys

Steve still works with CM, it's just a separate project now, it may have less work from cyan himself. However you can't forget that CM has a large amount of devs, Cyan has help from others so I doubt they would actually allow CM brand to die off like this.
Well perhaps working at Sammy will give Steve a chance to make sure ICS reaches other their other phones quickly
Considering that CM just announced it would support 10 new Sony Ericsson devices, I take that as a sign that we won't see CM winding down anytime soon.

Since Steve works with Sammy now I'm thinking that he could be learning new or different tweaks, Sammy should have some sort of ICS access (Sammy should have it by now) depending on his job position; so maybe he can work on CM8 slightly earlier. Personally I'm not to thrilled about ICS, after seeing that NexusS w/ "ICS"....It looked nothing like I thought, I figured Google would step it up to fend off iOS5/WP7.5(Mango). But it doesn't seem like much of a UI overhaul, but I'm sure the usability/features have been significantly changed.
I've been sitting on an upgrade since last month so I'm going to use in on the Amaze, even though I was planning to use it on the Sensation.
Just wondering if were gonna be getting more devs to cook up some roms for this phone.. I use to have a sensation and that forum is full of devs. Anyone devs cooking roms?... I would like cyanogen, I love me some aosp.
The development is picking up and we already have three devs and someone making a theme. Not to mention faux is putting together a custom kernel. Be patient It's only been a month.

Sure is. Better safe than sorry.
I've been wanting to get into development for a while, but since I've had a Vibrant since before it was popular, and they have fallen out of style, it wasn't the device I wanted to really work with.
That said, I hope to be buying an Amaze today, and if I can figure out a good starting point(after I get comfortable with the differences in the flashing process), I'd be interested in learning.
The biggest appeal of the Amaze is that it is a BEAST. Hardware wise this thing will hold its own for a long time to come, should be fully capable of running whatever the future throws at it. I noticed a big part of development is the popularity of the device, this phone is new, and it is obviously popular.. it will get plenty of development I'm sure, just be patient!
Edit: One of the most important things I see about the amaze(development wise), developers won't have to work around a lack of features like they did the Vibrant. Color-fixes, enabling a notification light, getting gps to work-- there were tons of things they had to try to overcome rather than just make a solid, stable, feature filled rom. The amaze doesn't sound like it will have these issues.
Patience my friend. We just built the Dojo, and we're now filling it with some wicked devs. The only thing X isn't working on is a froyo ROM... which I am not above requesting just to see if anything can rattle the guy

I have been running one of the Evervolv pre-Alphas for about a week now - All 3 of the ICS builds in the CDMA dev section are usable, you just have to figure out which features you can and can't live without. I love preludedrew's Alpha4, the HW accel makes it so snappy. Honestly I don't miss CM too much (but I will definitely try them out whenever there is a release). Try out one of the other releases - having ICS is sooooo worth it!

I agree although this phone is tough for a few different reasons.
1. There are two completely seperate versions GSM vs. CDMA and thats fragmenting the devs.
2. 3D is tough and a first for many
3. GSM kernerl source was f'ed for a long time so that threw development time in the trash
4. The upcoming ICS release has somewhat slowed development because some are just waiting to see what happens with an update. I wouldnt want weeks or months of my hardwork go to waste overnight because of an update to a whole new build by HTC.
With that said i think once ICS does drop it could provide many answers about some of the "under the hood" workings of this device, and development will pick up. As someone said this phone is a real beast under the cover.
None of this is to say that the devs currently working arent doing a great job. some of the stuff i have seen is great and there is a lot being done to get AOSP roms going on this phone. I have seen Development pick up greatly over the last few months. So i look forward to whats in store.

Never getting cm7 because of ICS is just speculation on your part. Regardless, we never got it.
We aren't even officially supported by CM, nobody knows what exactly is going to happen. That's why people should get comfortable with other roms...I can only imagine what this place is gonna look like once cm9 nightlies drop and our phone isn't on the list.
I have no doubt that CM will eventually make it's way to the evo 3d (I do have doubts about the 3d part ever working tho) it's just gonna take a little time. It will be worth it once everything gets rolling.

I saw that the Amaze 4G Dev forum is looking like all the roms are Sense based. Is this an temporary thing or is the dev support just not there? (Or is the phone locked down enough to make it difficult?)
Anyway I would greatly appreciate some I put on this!

Hello, I am new to the forum but do have the HTC Amaze 4G. While HTC does provide the tools for unlocking the bootloader, they do not allow for S-OFF (Security OFF). And it is because of this (for the most part) that developing for the HTC Amaze is limited ATM.

Temp - hopefully.
Dev support - we only have one developer that actually has the phone. To top it off he's only 16 and still in high school.
We have the source but not the entire kernel source (thanks to HTC and their technicalities)
Still don't have s-off so we can't flash kernels via recovery thus makes flashing roms that much more difficult.
So if you want a good phone to use as a daily driver and don't care about tweaking and boosting... this is the phone for you!
If you immediately want fully working ICS, Sense 3.5, CM9, AOSP, etc then go with another device.
Do we see this happening in the future? If more developers were to pickup the device then maybe. But not anytime soon.
Bottom line if you want a device that has a HUGE selection of roms that you can do pretty much anything with... this isn't the phone for you. Not yet anyway.
Anyone know if there's any word on whether S-Off is coming? I thought I heard HTC announcing the days of S-On being forced are over.
I'd rather get the better phone. Hope that dev support comes.

I doubt this forum will ever pick up. Most people who wanted a phone like this bought the sensation, and this phone is not a big enough of an upgrade from that. So most will just wait till the next gen.
Thanks for the responses. I think I am going to go with the Amaze after all, and deal with Sense. Apparently it'll get ICS at some point regardless, which will be nice. I am pretty good with Linux so I might work on my own development if I get some free time (going back to college to finish up my bachelors degree so I'm not so sure about that part).

I definitely agree. Everyone that I know that bought this phone after having the Sensation ended up having buyers remorse. The phones seem very similiar to eachother and we all expected them to be pretty much the same. However we later found out that they are nothing alike on the inside. Different partitions, different software, different securities, etc. This phone is actually kind of a PITA for developers despite how HTC claims to be "developer friendly" and all that other nonsense.

This is the first phone where I had to use the htc unlocking method and am SHOCKED that is not as open as they made it out to be. Keeping s on? What the hell was the point then? I can see where it would benefit developers, but as far as supporting xda type communities, its an epic fail while giving us false hope in all those press releases how they "heard" the enthusiast community and wanted to be more open.

First I want to thank all the crew working on the Super JELLY ROM. Your attention to detail is making this the best ROM I've ever used and I've used quite a few.
I have a question to throw out to whoever has the answer. One of the things I miss most with my update to Jelly Bean is the Quick settings tab in the notification dropdown window.
Are Quick Settings just gone forever with JB, or will there be a Mod for it someday?
I know Super JELLY has something like it as an option is settings, but I just liked the old school one.
From what I've read, the code that allowed enabling that has been removed by Google/Android.
Edit: wait, maybe HTC removed it. I don't use sense, but on AOSP, I have the same toggles that have existed since froyo (or maybe it was GB, I forgot). Just abandon sense, android is much better on the AOSP side.

Look man, the evo is a great phone. However, if you plan on having a broad source for development forget about it. This phone is and has been coming up short with custom offerings. Sorry. Because I once loved this phone, but there is nothing here happening for it.
HTC removed them. Started with our last OTA actually as we saw the ATT OneX have quick settings in their OTA, and then when it came to the EVO getting theirs it was removed... Personally thought that this was a sprint thing since other One series had it but now with the JB OTA rolling to all devices now it shows it was an HTC decision as its now gone from all of them...
Maybe they have something in the works for that area, or there are other plans in place for something else completely new?...

CM10.1, MIUI w/4g, SlimRom Official, JB kernels w/ active governors, updates from DEVS consistently, mostly regarding AOSP roms.. but thats just a few..Sorry if what I wrote as opinion bothered you or anyone else. Every HTC phone I've owned had an aluminum chassis that gave it a bit more heft. They have a very solid and reliable feeling to them. My phones have survived being dropped from all sorts of heights and all types of conditions. My father once dropped his HTC Touch Pro in discarded motor oil and the phone still to this day powers on and works. He has yet to upgrade it because it's only his work phone and he claims it's the most reliable phone he has ever owned.
I've owned the gs3 before I bought this EVO and I have to say. Yes there is more development there, but overall its all the same ****, we have devs working hard for us just like they have devs working hard for them over at the gs3 forums. we have great roms over here for us EVO users. My only real issue is with custom roms (cm based) is my Google nav not working at all but personally its not a big deal, I'm fine with sense, I can get telenav to work there.
I do wish we had miui (which I believe someone is working on, could be mistaken).

You mean like this?
So the quick settings are available in Viper4g 3.0.0 I believe they are the only JB Rom that has them thus far.
